Running Linux on the Sega Dreamcast
Introduction One of the more challenging aspects of learning about embedded Linux is the scarcity of cheap, compatible hardware. Sure, Linux runs fine on a personal computer, but does being able to run Linux on your workstation mean you can call yourself an embedded Linux guru? Hardly. You may not believe me now, but you will shortly. What's needed to really explore Linux as an embedded operating system is a well-documented, inexpensive and readily available hardware platform that isn't based on an Intel x86-compatible microprocessor. By excluding PCs, the list of candidates becomes: PDAs, internet appliances, and gaming consoles...

The VMU was originally a memory card for the Dreamcast that put an LCD screen right in your controller. When you weren’t at home you could take it with you and play mini-games or swap data with your friends. While it was a largely underused feature of the console it did actually improve gameplay for some games like Biohazard: Code Veronica by displaying your life meter on the screen. As you can see there were a fair few variations that made it out into the world.

Music CD featuring a rather creepy looking Managing Director Yukawa
Back at the end of the 90s Sega really went all out with the launch of the Dreamcast. We had a console with a modem and four controller ports built in as standard, memory cards which had screens and were portable gaming devices in their own right, and a huge marketing campaign in which Sega featured their real-life managing director Hidekazu Yukawa owning up to some of the companies past failings in a series of commercials. Due to the relative popularity of these episodes Yukawa became somewhat of a celebrity in Japan, attending publicity events and also featuring prominently on the packaging of the Dreamcast system at launch. Yet, his pr...

The Dreameye - hello, love, friendly? How happy is that packaging!
Originally, launching back on September 9, 2000 in Japan the 'Internet Digital Video Camera' or the Sega Dreameye was quite a revolutionary piece of equipment for its time. It launched at a reasonable 14,800 yen and was primarily designed for use with Sega's online network as a webcam and digital camera, although there were plans for Dreamcast games to involve the Dreameye and some titles like Jet Set Radio eventually did (more on that later). Inside the box, you get the Dreameye, a microphone headset, a stand, batteries, software, a cable to connect it to the Dreamcast, a Dreameye microphone plug card, and 2 AA batteries. Yup...

Segas GD-R technology could hold almost twice as much data as regular CD-Rs
"If only Sega had've included a DVD drive!", it is one of the most common complaints laid down at Sega's door for the failure of the Dreamcast. Sega themselves, promised such an add-on from pretty much the day the system went on sale and kept going with it right until they terminated the its production. But did they ever seriously intend to build such an accessory and how would it have helped in fending the Sony wolves from the door? Back in 1997 when Sega announced details of it's latest console, most people expected it to use the CD format. CD was still the standard media format despite competition from Toshiba's state o...

Pokemon was a licence to print money in the 90s
Probably regarded as the most successful series in video games, Nintendo’s Pokemon series brought to the market a sudden demand mobile gaming and a slew of companies rushing to the handheld market to capitalize on the trend. Not wanting to miss out, the big console makers of the time, Sega, Sony and Nintendo were also looking at ways to percolate some of this success to their home systems. Meanwhile, faced with financial difficulty and the burden of covering the huge losses incurred by the failure of the Saturn, Sega of Japan were looking for possible merging partners. Various names were mentioned but ultimately, in 1997 Sega struck a bil...

Selling the Dream
While the adverts shown in Europe for the Dreamcast were criticized for their vagueness and poor imitation of the PlayStation’s 90s avant-garde logo focused promotion, the commercials in the USA and Japan were entertaining, intriguing, and had a unique style all of their own. It was a theme of most of the consoles in the late nineties to develop a 'brand' rather than showing any actual gaming footage or other segments that would suggest the product was toy. Instead, a common theme would be to display a logo accompanied by a track of whichever band happened to be popular at the time. Interestingly, the launch commercials for the Dr...

Change of logo, which is better?
The Sega Dreamcast is the last of former hardware giant Sega’s home consoles, and for a lot of gaming fans including myself, the greatest game system of all time. The console suffered a premature demise, and is considered by many as a product which was largely ahead of its time, offering online gaming and downloadable content for console games years before Live was a twinkle in Microsoft’s eye. However, I’m not here to talk how the system was a commercial failure but instead look at why the Dreamcast is still so adored and well-respected to this day. The swirl chosen to represent the identity of the Dreamcast was changed from a dark shade...

Dreamcast Famitsu review scores

In recent years, the Famitsu review team examine have become known for their lenient grading system;
Famitsu, the major Japanese gaming publication that is dodgier than a nun squatting in a cucumber field is well known for accepting "sponsorship" from companies to enhance a review score ( Nintendogs 40/40 or Final Fantasy XIII 39/40 anybody?). In fact, you don't need to understand Japanese to see the brevity of the reviews often being only 3 or 4 sentences long and about as informative as a telephone call with a mute. I used to translate the reviews and it really brings to light the fact that they are incredibly short and vague, and not really useful, as a critique of a game at all. Yet, its scores create a lot of hype in bot...

Tokyos infamous Akihabara district
Akihabara, known affectionately as Akiba, is one of the most well-known Electronics districts in Japan. Yet, its popularity has led to a lot of redevelopment in recent years pushing out a lot of the smaller more specialist shops which attracted people in the first place, and replaced it with mammoth all-purpose electronic stores. This has unfortunately meant one thing, less retro video game shops. Still, while iconic names like Messeh Sanoh (as featured in SGGG) may be no more (it is now Trader), the area still has a few great stores to satisfy the retro hunger of any retro/Dreamcast enthusiast. So, you've arrived in Tokyo and wan...

Reading the interview in Edge with a former Bizzare Creations member on the production of MSR it reminded me of a chat I had recently with Jeff Lewis, also a previous employee of the former Liverpool gaming studios about one of my favourite Dreamcast game of all time, Fur Fighters. Enjoy! What are your memories of Fur Fighters? Furfighters was the first game I worked on in the video games industry. I was straight out of art school and had a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and it was just a fantastic experience learning how to make games and at the same time getting to create an entire world and a huge cast of characters. there were about 12...

TO BE THIS GOOD TAKES AGES - page 1
Media coverage of the Dreamcast tends to be a rather one-sided affair. While Sega of Japan always tended to keep a tone of deferential calm, Bernie Stolar (Saturn is not our future) the Chairman of Sega of America could often be found over-inflating his ego in numerous articles. So, imagine my surprise when going through one of my old magazines, a relatively short lived UK publication, Total Control, only to find a feature on the Dreamcast with a short interview with then chairman of Sega Japan, Shoichiro Irimajiri. Irimajiri-san, discusses his vision and hopes for the system and seems surprisingly realistic about the system’s chance of s...
