A few months ago, a memory expansion board that was designed
for the 520ST was announced in this news group. I think
it was designed by someone who works at Moncam in the UK.

I am writing to ask if you or someone you know has had any
experience installing this little thing in a 1040ST.

A friend of mine has this and has not yet been able to get
things to work yet. Any tips would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Thomas-Martin,
The traditional manner to tell if GDOS is loaded or not, for versions
1.0 and higher, is to implement the following assembly language routine.
That's probably what your compiler has hidden behind that call of yours ;-).

move.w #-2, d0 ;set d0 to -2
trap #2 ;call system (GDOS, or not GDOS?)
cmp.w #-2, d0 ;GDOS will modify...
beq gdos_not_installed

Anyway, that's the way _I_ do it... Wrap it up in compilerese (with
links and unlinks, and such) and voila, you've got a nifty little
GDOS tester!

this?

I requested a catalog (via FAX) over a month ago, and so far

Folks,
I'm using a 520STfm after exchanging my dead 520STm last
spring. I still have a tech specialties upgrade for the 520 if
anybody is interested. Otherwise I'll recase my ST so it'll fit
(a pain to do). I'm interested in more memory so if someone with
a board which works in the fm or a 1040 (rev E?) wants to dumpt it
...

The 520STfm has ( as I discovered the second my warranty ran out)
a 1040st motherboard with blitter space and half populated memory.
1) Could anyone give gory details to the net on how
to populate the second half of memory with either
256Kx1 or 1M x1's
2) Is there a blitter upgrade for this board? is it worth it?

Thanks,
Clark

I just got 32 1MBitx1 DRAMS, that I would like to expand my 1040ST's
memory with. I took a quick look through Start Magazine for memory
kits, and I saw 4 of them. They were:

1) Tech Specialties
2) New World Upgrade
3) Arco Board
4) Z-RAM 3D/4Meg

Has anybody any experience with any of these upgrade kits, they
could fill-in the Net about. Like, how easy was it to install? Was
there any soldering/trace cutting involved? How reliable has the memory
upgrade been? Did it interfere with any other upgrade boards installed?

Thanks for any info

Don't know, but I think it only works with TOS 1.4, but it is supposed to
be harmless if you run it with any other version. It is said that
it check the version number. If it is not 1.4, it quits.

> What ... is the 40 folder bug,

The 40 folder bug works something like this: If during one session,
you "visit" more than 40 or so folders, the system gets confused
and can not find directories and files. When that happened to me
I turned the system off and did a cold boot, and the system then
was able to find things again. The program FOLDR100 changes the
problem into a 100 folder bug. If you have more than 100 folders,
you simply up the number. Currently I have my program named
FOLDR300.PRG.

> how do I find out if I've got it,

I found out when I got a window saying "unable to find file or
application". I felt sure that the file was there. I tried to
erase a file. The system could not find it!

or are you using a Model 29 keypunch? More recent devices include an

Yes. Applications are guaranteed to be launched at IPL 0. Amen.

| On a related point, there has been some movement to correct a long-standing

I agree. This is, unfortunately, something Atari can't officially
support, because it's possible that some drain bramaged software out
there acutally uses GEMDOS i/o for the serial port (even though it's
slow) instead of BIOS. Please drum up lots of support from lots of
developers on this issue, and test all of the supported software out
there that uses the serial port to make sure that it doesn't break,
and then Atari will support standard error standard handle 2.

It isn't much help for world-wide cities, but a road atlas, such as that made
by Rand McNally is a decent source of latitude and longitude information for
U.S. cities (and Canada and Mexico). You should be able to get reasonably
accurate latitude and longitude readings from the various maps in the atlas.
I suppose that there is an equivelant source for cities in the rest of the
world.

>Anyone know the coordinates for Sacramento, CA?

From my road atlas I get: 121deg30min W 38deg30min N +- 15min

If I spent a couple of seconds to actually use a ruler I could give you
more accurate numbers.
