DEC recently announced the availability of Scheme->C, a Scheme to C translator.
I downloaded a copy of the code and would like to try and get it running on the
ST. There's a snag, however (isn't there always?) --- there is a .s file which
deals with saving and restoring registers, counters, etc. (to facilitate
call-with-current-continuation) and some integer arithmetic overflow handling.
The code is in VAX assembler and needs translating to 68000 assembler. It
*looks* like a fairly straightforward translation, but I could use some help in
ensuring that I get it right --- any offers?

I bought my 520 STE in december-89 and I'm very satisfied with it, except
for one thing. If I try to access a disk and it isn't inserted I get
the (CANCEL) (RETRY) dialog box. If I put in the disk and click on
(RETRY) the machine BOMBS!!!!! (with bombs on half the screen). The same
thing occurs if I try to write to a write protected disk, remove the
write protection, and then click on RETRY.
Has anybody else experienced this??

Well the Timer C interrupt seems to be quite an important issue when trying to
achieve stable colour screen interrupts. Degas Elite subverts Timer C
completely during screen interrupts and Neochrome lowers the IPL level.
My own technique follows the Neochrome example and I believe is less traumatic
to the system but would welcome Atari's own thoughts on it.
None of our handlers change the timers characteristics though so I guess I'm
voting with Allan on this.

My new Syquest drive should show up today so I'll be able to answer all
your questions. I paid $899 for the unit, considering that it comes with
a case, the great ICD Host Adaptor, and all the necessary cables, etc.
for the addition $200 over the cost of the mech alone, I think its well
worth it (the Host Adaptor alone runs $125) Reports from the field indicate
that the Syquest works fine with Mac and MS-DOS partitions, and thats why
I bought the unit, one platter for each OS. The three companies currently
marketing the removable for the ST is Toad of Maryland, Carter of Ohio, and
ABCO in Florida - Atari's units is due soon, but again, too late and for
to much money...

Mac emulation - Spectre GCR is the *only* way to go. No messing with
funny disk formats, Mac disks work out of the box and
run at speeds faster than a real Mac Plus. Aladin is
pale by comparison.
Hard Drive - If you want a great price and future expandability I
suggest an ICD FaST 50meg drive with the Seagate 157N
28ms drive inside - this baby can be had for around $650
and comes complete - and upgrading is as easy as tossing
in a new mech and buying a double crimped cable - the
software is also outstanding.

With the old hard disk driver, you can't. With the new one, you can: I
believe you use a secno of -1 as a signal, and add an extra argument at
the end: the LONG sector number you want. I could be wrong. By "new"
and "old" I mean 3.x is "new" and 2.x, 1.x or no version number at all
is "old." Get the developer's documentation for the AHDI 3.00 Release
Notes: it has the straight scoop on this and much more.
I hope you are not assuming that a logical sector is 512 bytes; that's
no longer always the case, and people will not be able to use your tool
if you make that assumption. Physical sectors, though, *are* always
512 bytes (as far as I know), which adds a level of complication when
you do physical-sector reads and writes. In other words, get the docs
on this or you will probably get it wrong.
