1. .introduction (aquafresh).
Its good to start on a high, so I`ll give you the good news now.
Within a week of releasing Xtravaganza 01, there was a surprising number
of emails pouring into my mailbox with comments, filled in
questionnaires
and some articles for this issue. The email scene list is starting to
take shape, people are recognising that there is a UK scene. Great!
I personally think that this is a good achievement of what can be done
if only a little bit of thinking and organising was put into it. A big
pat on the back goes for those that put the effort in!
On a slightly negitive note, there wasn`t a lot of responces from
people submitting notes and articles to me. I dont think I`m expected
to write a fair chunk of the articles that get published on xtravaganza,
and it would be nice if some people spared a few moment to write
something interesting.
Finally, I`m sorry that I didn`t get this issue out on the 1st of June.
There's a few personal reasons for it. The main reason was because last
month, I was in the process of having a number of interviews for IT
jobs, although at the end I decided to stay with my current company.

* Barog updated the faq, its on the ukscene website.

* These three went to the Takeover party in Holland, but sadly
Spansh's hard drive died.
Tesko (Amiga/PC)
* NRG (PC - Coder/Graphic Artist) joined.
* Jim Bowen (Musician) left as he no longer has an Amiga.
* Storm (Musician) renamed back to Aquafresh.
Vertigo
* Tim is organising a small close community party in Leeds, read
his article for more infomation.

3. .the uk scene www (aquafresh).
We now offically have a UK scene WWW site thanks to Statix, so
please point your browser to: http://ban.joh.cam.ac.uk/~ukscene
The WWW site was nicely designed by Dranath with some fancy designs.
Please have a look around the site and if you can come up with any ideas
to implement then please email either myself or Dranath.
You can also FTP files to the www site, the user code is: ukscene. and
the password is: AquaFresh (notice the capitals).
Dranath also has a info page that he`d like you to fill in so again,
please point your browser to: http://www.deliverance.force9.co.uk/info
and spare a few minutes of your time to fill in the questionnaire.
Spansh uploaded some pictures (holland.zip) which can be found on the
www site.

4. .dejavu invite (pre version) (tim/vertigo).

* What?
Dejavu is a UK demo party, designed to be a stepping stone
to a larger party held late in '98 or early '99. It's also
to guage interest and support for UK based parties within
the UK Scene and give us an organization test run.
* Date
It's being held in the last weekend of August (28th).
As far as we know this doesn't clash or come very close to
any uni or school starting dates. If it does, let us know
and we can get it moved to the to the 14th, or any time
around (but not clashing) with V98.
* Web Site

* Network
There is an initial party network with 16 connections and
a 128k ISDN inet connection. It can be extended, or additional
networks can be set up if equipment is brought.
* Monitors
We can supply up to 5 monitors if you're thinking of bringing
your PC, but don't want to lug the whole system onto the train
(just the processor). Email us regarding this.
* Desk space
There is desk space for between 22 and 33 computers on the first
floor depending how space is shared. The second floor can also
be used which would provide another 15-25 places.
* Food
No food will be provided at the party, mass ordering from local
take aways is fine. There are three very local pubs, two of which
serve food over lunch time. There are lots of close-by eateries
most of which deliver. More importantly there are over 250 local
curry houses.
* Drink
Alchohol is effectively banned from the party place. This rule may
be revised closer to the party, as we can set aside the whole of
the third floor for this purpose. Suggestions regarding this are
welcome.
* Parking Space
There are approximately 5 on-site parking spaces, three of which
are behind a locked gate. On the street you can park anywhere,
as many people normally do and there is no yellowing lining.
* Security
Everyone attending the party is assumed to be responsible and self
regulating. There will be a secure (locked) room to store valuables
over the duration of the party.
* Entrance
The entrance fee is 10 UKP.
* Prizes
Competition prizes will be calculated on a percentage of entrance
takings.
* Productions
All the productions will be shown on a 300 watt PA system and a
lovelly TV projector.
* Deadlines
All entries should all be given to the respective competition
organizer in good time for the deadline. Competition deadlines
will be announced at the party when you arrive.
Competition Sections

* PC
All productions are shown on a P233 with 64 meg of ram and a
4mb matrox millenium graphics card. The machine will have a
2mb SB AWE32, a 2mb GUS PnP, as well as a Orchid 3dfx card
and a Power VR card.
All hardware on the compo machine can be used.
The demo's can run in:
PC - Win98
PC - Win98 Dos Box
PC - Dos (allowed driver fiddling)
PC - Linux (standard RedHat install)
PC - NT 4.0
You can enter under:
4k, 64k and 5mb.
These are total unzipped sizes, except for the 5mb demo compo
where 5mb is the total zipped size. TBL's library will be available
for 4k and 64k, if you want to use your own then contact us.
Protected mode extenders (DOS4G, DOS32 and PMODE only) will be
excluded from all demo sizes if they are external. If you want to
use another extender contact us before hand.
* PSX
All productions are uploaded to a standard PSX (debug style).
The production has to run soley fit on the PSX.
* Amiga

* Music
You can enter under:
4 channel module
unlimited channel module
Unlimited channel module is a maximum of 2mb zipped. Modules
will be played on whatever you want.
* Gfx
- to be filled -
* Wild
Whatever you want, bring hardware if needed. Entries can be
submitted on VHS.
* Suprise
There will be various suprise compos and many down right
weird compos.
* Releasing
All productions will be released by the organizers within a
week of the party. All productions should therefore be
entered in their zipped release format (not .gz or .rar or .arj).
* Voting
If you come, you get to vote.
* BBQ
If we say we're planning one, it'll rain, so we won't say we're
planning one.
Travel
------
Detailed travel information will be posted. This will include
- lifts
- train times
- meeting points
- maps
- and directions
Most of this info will be available through the web for easy
access.

5. .who's majic mushroom/tesko? (mjm/tesko).
[I guess this has become a regular, anyone else want to give us their
history? - Aquafresh]
I started off in the scene in January 1990 when I got an Amiga 500 for
Christmas 89. Within a couple of weeks 3 of us had formed a small
group called Liquid Gold. As we were all learning the ropes, we mainly
mail traded, but we also did 2 music disks, a demo coded by a friend
and the famous "Crap Jokes" series.
At the Magnetic Fields Revenge Party in October I met up with a lot of
sceners and made a lot of new friends. At the party I met the guys from
Pussy UK and Crack UK. Two days later I had left Liquid Gold and joined
Pussy UK, and was then asked straight away to join Crack. As Pussy
wasnt as good as I thought it would have been, I took Alchemist's offer
and joined up with the lads from Crack. This is the group that made me
famous, and I got a lot of new contacts from it.
A few months later, I left with Paradroid to set up the UK division of
Flash Production, one of the most famous and respected demo groups in
the world. Eventually, this group died, and we spent a few days in
Razor 1911, before deciding to reform Flash Production. Again it
failed, and myself and Paradroid went out seperate ways. I joined
a newish group called Plague, which consisted majorly of the Crack
members. Another group to suffer from bad management and lack of
skilled members, it died.
I got an offer to join Quartz UK. I took the offer and spent just short
of a year with the lads. This is probably the happiest I had ever been
in a group. I was promoted to co-manager, had the most popular demo
pack series in the country and had developed my coding skills enough
to be fortunate to release a few intros and my first ever demo (under
my real name - more on this later!).
However, after a trip to Denmark to The Party II, I came back knowing
that in a few weeks I would be in one of the worlds best groups, Lemon.
was about to start up. My old friend Paradroid called me up one day to
confirm that they wanted me in, and that they wanted me to be the UK
manager. I agreed, left Quartz and Lemon. announced themselves to the
world!
10 Months later, Lemon. had died. Having being told this on the phone
by Splatt!/Fairlight, he asked me what I was going to do next. I didnt
really know, or care as it was New Years Eve and all I wanted to do was
go out and get slaughtered :) So, there and then he asked me to join
Fairlight to which I agreed. I stayed with them for a couple of months
until he quit the scene and I moved to Delirium. However, I missed
being part of a demo group and asked an old friend, Murk/Sonic if I
could join. The letter came back, they wanted me! Sonic changed to
Sonik and things looked even better! Then as Xmas, I quit the scene for
a few months due to work commitments and left Sonik.
Several months later, I got a PC and I joined Tesko.... I've been
running it ever since! :)
While all this above was going on, I must admit that I was a member of
Tesko (and when they were Doom and Voodoo Design) under another name
as they didnt have many coders or organisational skills. I could code,
not amazingly well, certainly not technically, but it didnt matter, the
Tesko style was all about fun and funny intros/demos which it still is
today. So, I eventually joined under my real name, and the format
is how it is today...

Wired 98 will be held near Mons, Belgium between the 17th and
the 19th July.

2. How Will we get there
a) Ferry, Car / Coach / Train
We could get a ferry from either Dover or Hull over to
Zebrugge (which is probably an overnight crossing), or
even to Calais, although this would require more
travelling I think.
From those ports we can (if there are enough offers of
cars) pack everyone into cars and head for the party
place.
If there aren't enough cars, or there are a lot of
people we could organise a coach and driver, but in
order for this to be economical we would need at least
30 people to go.
Finally we could se public transport (trains) to get to
Mons and then a taxi to get to the partyplace.
b) Train, Train, Taxi
We could use Eurostar to get over to Brussels in Belgium
and then use trains to get to Mons and then a taxi from
there (This is how we did it last time). Eurostar
leaves from Waterloo International Station in London.
3. How much will it cost
a) Ferry, Car / Coach / Train

This will cost (before any discount) £80 for the
Eurostar return, £10 for the train to Mons, and
possibly a maximum of £5 per person in taxi fare. This
will be the maximum cost of travelling. This price
will get reduced with any Group Discount, Student
Discount or any other discount we can get, and I have
heard of some methods of (legally :) reducing the
second train costs.
