Sicilian edizioni Trinacria tapes for Commodore 64
In the 80s and early 90s, sicialian pirate cassette collections spread in some parts of Italy which consisted of a compilation of games for the Commodore 64 which featured the original title names of the games, in contrast to the standard pirate trend which consisted of bypass the italian law of that time by publishing the games by changing the title name and without paying for the copyrights.
After the so-called Neapolitan pirate cassettes, the most popular ones were the Sicilian cassettes, produced in Palermo and Catania and diffused in Sicily but sporadically sold also in other regions.
However, unlike the Neapolitans, the Sicilians are poorly documented or studied, and much information about them has been lost over time.
The Trinacria editions
The cassettes of the Trinacria editions were compilations of pirate games which, contrary to what the other newsstands did, carried the original name of the games. Their production began in Messina around 1984/1985 and are considered to be the first Sicilian pirate cassettes. Essentially, large collections of pirated games arrived from England, teenagers arranged to make compilations, whose master cassette was sold to a publisher who duplicated and distributed the tapes in the newsstands.
But if the Trinacria Editions were made in Messina, why did the cassettes called Edizioni Trinacria Palermo exist ? Well, simply because in Palermo people pirated the pirate cassettes of Messina. Someone in Palermo took the Trinacria cassettes made in Messina, copied and distributed them, renaming them into Edizioni Trinacria Palermo !
Cassettes had a custom cover with a normal, transparent and black plastic case. The "manual" consisted of a sheet of paper printed with a needle printer. It had no drawings but contained the list of games on the cassette, with white space to write the datatape counts of the cassette. There was no internal numbering on the tapes, there was a white area on the box that everyone could fill with a number with a marker.
The most important series were Gli intramontabili, Giochi al C64, Super giochi, Super raccolta, Videogames, Videogames nuova serie, Videosoft and then there were some special supplements like Star Wars, World Games and Super Sexy.
Compared to the Neapolitan cassettes in some numbers they appeared more accurate due to the aesthetic design of the cover of the cassette and to having introduced software goodies as loading screens and a special feature present on some collections, which essentially was an initial software with a custom software system which helped find the desired game on the cassette.

In 1988 Trinacria Editions produced many pirate cassettes for Commodore 16 / Plus4, often with custom games credits
The Edizioni Trinacria also produced pirated compilations for Commodore 16 / plus4, like the three Supergiochi releases at the C16 / Plus4 of about 1988, also with the indexed search.
