Dreamcast: Large Capacity CD-R FAQ & Online E-Sellers

So you might be asking yourself where in the hell can I find these 90/99/100 minute CDR's that we use for some of our work as well as others in the Dreamcast scene as this disc can have as much as 200mb more then a normal CDR allowing for higher quality rips of games and most of the time allowing us to totally bypass any need to downsample or rip anything from the game. As you all know the Dreamcast itself can hold 1.1gb of game data in the denser portion of the disc, not always used to it's fullest potential but that is good for most rips we can do for 80min standard disc to make a game, but when quality counts we sometime choose to larger capacity disc to make our games to give you the closest rip out there next to buying the game. Normally I would say support your DEV's but in this case the days have long come and passed for that and some of the trash that was passed on to us from so called "elite" scene groups.

It was always a race back in those days so see who got the file there first. There were many problems with this, first and foremost there were in "quality control" rules for any of the games. Secondly lines were not nearly as fast as they are now, and lastly everyone was in a race to compete not to make the best rips out there. Heck some were made for 74min disc leaving tons of room to make video's look better (take DCRes' repack of Echelon's work on Dino Crisis & Silver, he just added a dummy file instead of taking advantage of that extra 6min of space) and usually we can use stereo audio now instead of mono, even then there are tricks to make mon preform like stereo recoding both tracks as one file and tricking the 1st_read.bin to play say you onnly have the right side and make it play the right channel for both left and right sides. And since both channels were recoded it saves space and still kepps a "mock" stereo effect. And then there were some games were downsampled/ripped not because it needed to be done to fit but to make the file size smaller so they could be first on the topsite. Like replacing preview video's with "dummy" video instead of simply recoding to make their file smaller then the guy that did it right.

And when it comes to the scene first place or nothing so the other superior rip gets nuked most of the time leaving us with trash. So we aim to fix that be re-ripping games, taking our time and looking at it form many angles and confering with other DC hackers like MILF, MiDiDub, and win to bring you the best possible rip ever, even if that means a disc larger then 80mins. There is others out there dedicated to 80min disc only, I am for quality over size myself. This gives you options something the Dreamcast scene never had before. LHeck there are even different methods to our Mil-CD exploits, DCCM is AUDIO/DATA 11702 LBA while ReviveDC is DATA/DATA 45000 LBA to leave most files "clean" and untouched as this LBA defeats a lot of protections and keeps the same as the original GD-ROM. In the ned it is pretty much preference and that is what we are trying to give you in many different fields, unreleased games, emulated titles, translations, quality by otpical media choices. This makes the dying scene strogner every day, besides some have better with one format over another. My launch day Dreamcast form Japan will not boot AUDIO/DATA rips but all my DATA/DATA rips work fine so it is nice to have choices instead of take it or leave it the scene bestowed upon us. There were some greats we still look at today for help like Kalisto and Echelon but even they made mistakes. But over all besides Genius, and the occasional Eurasia & Paradox release the games were utter trash due to the lax ness of the rules back then as most sysops had no idea how games were cracked back then so as long as it was compressed properly and extracted and burnt fine it was the winner despite quality so some like to like in their NFO files with lame excuses like "The game had lag so I had to reduce file size" when it was just utter laziness is all.

This lead to the crap we have today and why there are groups like ReviveDC and DCCM projects around re-ripping with VBR instead of CBR in both audio and video, finding newer methods of recording video without noticeable loss using KVCD quant matrix. So now we have quality rips but like I said even with all that we need more room to make a game 'complete' so RevieDC uses larger disc form time to time to bring you the best possible rip of the game. While DCCM doesn't use large capacity disc they do however make the best possible 80min rips till you get your hands on these large media disc as you will not be disappointed. So let me show you where you can get these disc world wide for our work and others older rips like Hykan's D2 and Skies of Arcadia rips with no stutter and both in glorious VGA unlike Echelon's stuttering NON-VGA rip of Skies of Arcadia.

Thank you! I've corrected the date in the article. However, some websites list January 1980 as the date of death.
