The Taking Of Beverly Hills Complete Dox

Based on the movie, "The Taking Of Beverly Hills", starring Ken Wahl as
football hero Boomer Hayes, this action adventure computer game thrusts
you in the midst of a riveting plot to thwart the raid on Rodeo Drive.
You must stop the thief of a priceless Botticelli Fresco; free Laura
from the ruthless billionaire, Robert Masterson; and stay alive!

Digitized pictures and sounds from the movie, stunning graphics and
animation, and over 120 different scenes provide an authentic Beverly
Hills backdrop for this challenging computer adventure. You take on the
role of Boomer, football's hottest quarterback, in for the night of your
life. Beverly Hills is up for grabs, and it's up to you to stop the
fiery frenzy. As you rush through the streets and famous shops, you
soon discover that nothing is as it really seems.

Terrorists have donned police uniforms and new dangers lurk at every
turn. With the help of beautiful Laura Sage, Boomer's new found love,
you can uncover the looter's command center. But will you have the
moves and plays to save the Fresco and free the real cops? Can you go
the distance to take out Masterson?

Keys
~~~~
Numeric keypad or arrows - Directional Movement
INS - Switches to sideview from overhead
SPC - Switches to pointer mode
M - Turns music on/off
ENTER - Clicks on things to use items or pick them up
Hint: Visit the police station first - It is located on the second
The actual police station is the fourth building from the left.
Another hint - You can play either Boomer or Laura. Click on the
picture of Boomer or Laura and you will change to that character.
You have three main goals that you must accomplish to win the game:
1) Free the real cops from the fire station.
2) Rescue the Botticelli fresco.
3) Save Laura from Masterson after she is captured.
- Don't let Boomer stand still in the street for too long.
- If you drop an object, and don't hide it, it may not be there
when you get back.
- Once you establish communication with Laura, check with
her regularly for updates on the bad guys locations.
- Stay off of the sideways unless you are entering a side view.
GETTING STARTED
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INPUT DEVICES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Taking of Beverly Hills program can use either the keyboard, a
mouse or a joystick for user input. The default selection is the
keyboard.
KEYBOARD:
~~~~~~~~~
It is recommended that you use the arrow keys on your numeric keypad.

USE THE FOLLOWING KEYS TO CONTROL THE GAME:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arrow keys -- move Boomer and Laura around the screen
PGUP, PGDN, HOME & END -- move diagonally
INSert -- switch to side view from overhead
SPACE -- switch to the pointer mode
JOYSTICK:
~~~~~~~~~
To use the joystick, you must select the proper joystick (1 or 2). The
joystick is used to move Boomer, Laura or the pointer around the
screen. The FIRE button acts like the insert key.

SPECIAL KEYS
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press S to turn the sound effects on/off
Press M to turn background music on/off
PLAYING THE GAME
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the game begins, you find Boomer on the deserted streets of
Beverly Hills. The only people on the street are bad cops. Your first
priority should be to establish communication between Boomer and Laura.
Once Laura has found Masterson's control room in the Hotel, she will be
able to provide Boomer with information regarding the location of the
bad cops.

See the Hint section later in this manual for more help in playing the
game.

SCREEN LAYOUT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The screen consists of two major areas: the action window, and the
information area. All of the action occurs in the large action window
on the top of the screen. The information area shows you your
inventory, location on overhead view of Beverly Hills, and the other
character you can access.
USER INTERFACE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The game operates in two different modes: action mode and pointer mode.
In action mode, you control the selected character as he moves around
the screen. In pointer mode you move a pointer around the screen to
select objects, select current characters, etc.

ACTION MODE
~~~~~~~~~~~
The program begins with an overhead view of the current location. The
character can move quickly when in overhead view. When the character
approaches a point of interest (doorway, storefront,etc.) you can
switch to the side view by pressing the INSert key. The character must
be directly in front of an area to switch to a side view. When Boomer
is walking in the side view in front of a store, he can walk off of
either end of the screen and the next store will appear. When the
character walks away from an area, the program will switch back to the
overhead view.
POINTER MODE
~~~~~~~~~~~~
To access the pointer mode, press the space bar. A pointer will appear
on the screen. You can move the pointer using a joystick, mouse, or
cursor keys. In pointer mode you can access your inventory or switch
characters.

If Boomer is the current character, a picture of Laura is shown on the
middle of the screen. If Laura is the current character, Boomer is
shown on the bottom of the screen. To switch to the other character,
place the pointer on the character and click or press ENTER.

See the Objects section of this manual for details on using and
manipulating objects.

OBJECTS
~~~~~~~
The key to foiling the crooks in The Taking of Beverly Hills is the use
of objects. There are various objects scattered throughout the game.
They can be found in the hotel, on the sidewalk, in front of stores,
and inside of stores. Each character can carry a maximum of 6 objects
at any one time. The objects currently in inventory are shown in the
inventory window on the bottom of the screen.
PICKING UP OBJECTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: you cannot pick up objects unless you are in the side view.

To pick up an object, switch to pointer mode by pressing the space bar
and move the pointer over the object. As the pointer passes over the
object, the name of the object will appear in the info bar. To pick up
the object, either click the mouse or joystick button, or press ENTER.
To place the object in inventory, move the object over the inventory
window and click, or press ENTER. The object will be placed in
inventory if there is room.

To take an object out of inventory, click on the object in the
inventory window and place it somewhere at the current location.

To hide an object, click on the object in the inventory window and then
click on the HIDE button. Now, when you place the object at the current
location, it will disappear. You can still pick up the object if you
remember where it is.

USING OBJECTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any of the objects that you find in the game can be used. Some objects
do nothing at all. You will also find several objects that won't do
anything unless you have certain other objects in your inventory or at
the current location at the time.
To use an object, select the desired object from the inventory window.
Move the object over the USE button and click or press ENTER. The
object is now ready to use. Objects can be used in two ways. If it is
an object that the character would use on their body (i.e. sunglasses),
simply place the object back over the inventory window and click or
press ENTER.
If you are using an object that must be used on another object or a
location, move the object over the area at the current location that
you would like to use that object at and click or press ENTER. For
example to use a key on a door, select the key from the inventory,
click on the USE button and then move the key over the door and click.
