Subject: New Servo?

I thought long and hard about what you said, and here's
my reply....
New Servo?
Thanks for the SOLN #4. Definitely a great way to start the day!

I don't remember which show it was recently -- I DO remember a reference to
"Navy Seals", so it must be a reasonably new episode -- but it seemed that Tom
Servo's voice had changed. It did sound similar to the "old" Servo, but I
thought it might have been someone else. Any confirmation/denial?

Also, I noticed the summary of the previous seasons in a previous newsletter.
Anyone have a summary of the latest season? This would include such gems as
"Pod People", and my personal favorite at this point, "Time of the Apes". BTW,
"TOTA" had so many one-liner bustups in it that I could hardly breath at one
point! Such as "Sandy Frank, Sandy Frank, likes to crap in his hands," and
"Look -- he's got a monkey on his back!", and "Hey, monkey dude -- where'd ya
get the Bimmer?" There was even a subtle "Twin Peaks" reference: "It's a
planet full of owls." "And they are NOT what they seem."

"I can't kill the one I love." (Rita)
"So kill the one you're with!" (Robot)
-- From that movie with the Judy Garland impersonators all named "Ken".

Subject: Old shows vs. new

It couldn't figure it out at first, but I think I understand why my wife
doesn't like MST3K any more. It's not that I watch it too much or that
I watch it on Saturday mornings when she is trying to sleep, but the
fact that the show has changed.

Last night I was cataloging some of the older shows and I noticed that
Joel and the bots used to do a LOT less talking. I watched parts of
"The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy", "Commando Cody (various chapters)", and
others. When they got into the second season and third they made many
many more comments. That's when it started bugging my wife.

I realize that they watch the movies 10 or more times to gather the
maximum amount of comments and satire, but are they starting to over do
it?

We want another serial! "Commando Cody" and "The Phantom Creeps" were
something to look forward to.

Subject: MST3K Responses to previous SOL issues

Hello, all....

I'm new to the mailing list, but since RSK was kind enough to supply me with
back issues of SOL news, I thought I'd respond to some of the things I saw.

RE: Commercial from Gamera vs. Baragon (Ed Hughes)

What an amazing piece of work... Servo talks FAST in that one. It cracks me up
everytime I hear it.

RE: Joel's appearance on SNL (Larry Hastings)

I saw that one too... I've wondered ever since then if Joel's obvious hatred of
Gallagher which bubbles up from time to time stems from the fact that they were
both doing gadget-based stand-up at about the same time, and Gallagher was
getting more popular. My favorite bit was where he did the Batrope with the
microphone cord...

RE: MST3K Self References (Majestic Llama)

Two of the most often culled movies for self-references are _Cave_Dwellers_ and
_Robot_Holocaust_... In one movie, the woman with the speech impediment from
_Robot_Holocaust_ actually makes a cameo in the Hexfield Viewer! (I've
forgotten which episode) I'm also pretty sure that the deep-voiced, drawn out
"Noooo!" that you occasionally hear is an imitation of Miles O'Keefe in
_Cave_Dwellers_.

Of course, _Hellcats_ actually had host segments from other episodes...

RE: Lyrics to theme song (Larry Hastings)

I'm with RSK on the "monitor is mine/monitor his mind" question... Maybe if
they watched the shows on a monitor, I'd buy it, but it's supposed to be a
projection movie screen.

As for super-minutiae, it's "begin or end" not "begin and end". Even I don't
care about that one, though... By the way, I had all of the background voices
in the Robot Roll Call except Cambot's. Thanks, Steve Robert...

RE: Spoilers and Episode Guide

I don't think there's such a thing as an MST3K spoiler... If it's funny enough
to laugh at on paper, it's funny enough to laugh at more than once.

As for an Episode Guide, what I'd like to see in one is:
Title of Movie
Season (I usually tell them apart by A: the presence of Larry Airheart (1st)
B: the typestyle of the end credits
(2nd/3rd/4th?)

Invention Names
Short Films/Serials before the movie
Short Description of Host Segments

I'd be willing to help with a comprehensive guide, as I have as of now 23
episodes on tape.

I'll put my new questions in a separate message...

"Oh yeah, well you're full of skit."

Subject: MST3K Minutiae

Here's some interesting questions I haven't been able to figure out...

Who the heck is the voice that says "Commercial Sign In...." etcetera?
I'd always assumed it was Cambot, but in the credits Cambot is listed as "as
himself", and that's NOT a man's voice.

Does anybody know the REAL reason for the switch in mad scientists between the
first and second seasons? (I like Frank better, but I was curious)

How the heck does "Shadowrama" really work?

What is the reference "[somebody] as Sammy and Chief Zabu" from?
^an approximation^

If everybody's into making lists, why not a list of the most-often used lines
across movies? You know, like "By this time, my lungs were aching for air" and
"Water, the source of all [fill in the blank]"

And, finally, a comment on just what makes MST so great, in my opinion...
I think it's the characters. This show is done SO WELL that my disbelief goes
right out the window. I don't think of Crow or Servo as puppets, (more
accurately, I think of them as puppets but without puppeteers). Once the show
starts, I get into the SOL and it seems, while not REAL, at least very
self-consistent. Anybody could do what Joel and Co. do, but only they could do
it with this much style.

By the way, I found the third appearance of "Oh, I hate to shoot a butt like
that" last night, in _Hell Cats_. Anybody know of others, besides _Rocket
Attack USA_ and _Commando Cody_?

LOOKING for someone that has VHS recordings of the 1st two seasons of
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 (currently being shown on the COMEDY CENTRAL
cable TV channel). The seasons I refer to were before the channel merged with
HA! and changed its name. I don't get this channel in my area and would like
to view these episodes - I have seen the current season.

If you can help, please contact me at "uunet!aminet.uucp!barrett" so we
can make arrangements so I can view them. I'm willing to cover costs,
postage, etc. Tapes will be returned if desired.

Thanks!

Sure, however my request may be different. Some people have been telling me
that the 1st & 2nd season shows HAVE been appearing on Comedy Central at a
specific day & time, but no one has been able to tell me WHEN these appear in
EST (I don't get the channel myself, but a friend of mine does and is willing
to tape shows for me if she knew exactly WHEN these appear).
If this is true, then all I really need is for someone to tell me
WHEN MST3k appears on CC, and which timeslots are current
and previous seasons. I'd also like to know when the new season starts.

If my information is wrong, then I will need to find a tape source for
the previous source.

Does anyone have an GIFs of MST3k? I'd love to get any of Joel and
the 'bots, but what I *really* want is a silhouette of them watching a
movie.
...
Finally, the last Gamera movie was shown today. Unfortunately my
cable went out about 10 minutes from the end. Best quote, IMHO, was
"Let's go get some tuna-safe dolphin" by Joel.

Subject: As promised... [transcript of opening of Fugitive Alien]

As promised, here's the transcript of the opening of Fugitive Alien with Jack
Perkins, who most would know from the Arts and Entertainment network.

Frank: Say, what's the ladder for?
Dr. Forrester: Well, Frank, we've got a special guest today to tell Joel
and the Bots about today's experiment. It's someone we all
know and love, I think you're going to be excited. Ladies and
Gentlemen, Mr. Jack Perkins!
Frank: Jack Perkins, WOW!
-------
Jack Perkins:
Hello.
Today's experiment is called "Fugitive Alien," a wonderful film
from Japan, not to be confused with The Fugitive, the classic television
series which can be seen weekdays, right here on A&E.
This is actually a strung-together series of Japanese shows which, when
put together in this way, make for what I think is some of the best TV
has to offer.
-------
Dr. Forrester: Thanks, Jack.. now..
-------
Jack Perkins:
And then, Joyce Carol Oates will be out to read from her
wondrous new work of fiction, her first novel in well over a month.
Then, Peter Paul and Mary will be out to give us a wondrous rendition
from one of their songs off of their scintillating new album.
And then, Hugh Cronin and Jessica Tandy will be out to tell us
some poignant stories of the joys and sorrows of being really, really
horribly old.
And then, Topol..
-------
Joel: Oooh, we've got movie sign! Who's Jack Perkins???
[Movie]

[Into first break]
Tom Servo: Or.. or you can pull down that curl in front and it would look
just like Frank's hair helmet!
Joel: (in Frank voice) Oh, I think those things are so wonderful.
(laughter)
Tom Servo: Aha! Push the button Frank! Ahaha
-------
Frank: Uh Doctor F, I think you'd better come have a look at this. Joel and
the Bots are making fun of my hair, MY HAIR!
Dr. Forrester: Now Frank, let them have their little fun. The experiment's
not quite over and they'll soon learn to regret it.
-------
Crow: Wait.. hey guys, look at this one! This looks like Dr. Forrester if his
head got sucked into the vacuum of space through a keyhole!
-------
Dr. Forrester: Now you cut that out! Remember what I said about hat parties!
You get your little hinders back into the theater and you watch
the film! I'm NOT amused by your antics in the least..
[Jack Perkins comes out from behind]
Jack Perkins: I thought it was a sheer delight! I think that's about as grand
as a hat party can get..AAaaagh!
[Dr. F applies cattle prod to shoulder of Jack Perkins]
Jack Perkins: That was about as painful as a cattle prod to the shoulder
can get.. AAAaagh!
[Dr. F applies cattle prod again]
Dr. Forrester: Send 'em commercial Frank.
Frank: I'll send them commercial sign.
Jack Perkins: But, later on the program, Linda Ellerbee will be out.. AAaaagh!

Subject: MST3K: What's with Gypsy?

Hi,

Does anyone know what the deal is between Gypsy and Richard
Basehart of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea fame?

Last night, during a break in Gamera vs. Zigra, Joel and the
Bots displayed diorama's they had made to celebrate this being
the last Gamera movie they must endure. I thought it was very
funny that Gypsy said her diorama (which was just three lumps of
Play-Dough straight out of the can) was supposed to be 'Richard
Basehart, the Flying Sub, David Hedison and the guy who played
the Chief'. Did anyone else find this amusing? What's this thing
that Gypsy has for Richard Basehart? She has said something about
him in several episodes. I've only been watching for about six
months. Is there anything in any of the early episodes that explains
this?

"He doesn't speak your language, dickweed!"

"It's called EVIL, kid."

"Trumpy! You really ARE magical!" (silly music ensues...)
