Playstation: older GPU (SCPH-1002) vs newer GPU (SCPH-5502)

onimush, a member of the tombraiderforum published recently an interesting comparison between the grapic produced by the older Playstation GPU chip (SCPH-1002) vs the newer GPU (SCPH-5502).

I have two PS1's: One very early model(1995) and one from ~1997 and they are not the same.

Early PS1 has not so advanced GPU, so there is some color banding ( like on PC in 256 color software mode). Even Sega Saturn hasn't such issues.

It is safe to say that most people who played TR on the release in 96, saw the game as it is on the left and not the way we know it now. It is not surprising that people so admired the 3dfx version in 96)
