Booting PS2 Backups For Dummies!
The Step-By-Step Guide
Written by Sgt. Dan
------------------------------------------------------------------
The VERY first thing (Read this!)
This tutorial is for PS2s that have no modchip installed.
Please read all of the text (don’t skip any of it) or you will have great difficulty understanding!

Part 1: The Basics

Q: What do I need to boot my games?
A: You need the following things:

  1. A PS2 (Obviously)
  2. A Game Shark 2 (US) or an Action Replay 2 (PAL)
  3. A correctly burned backup. If you want a tutorial for burning them you need PS2 Burning For Dummies, "http://ps2.sgt-dan.com/".

ATTENTION:
To continue using this tutorial you must know what version of PS2 you have.
Look at the back of your PS2.
What are the first two characters on the serial number?

  • u1…? (10 screws on the bottom) You have a version 1.
  • u0…? (10 screws on the bottom) You have a version 2.
  • u2…? (10 screws on the bottom) You have a version 3.
  • u2…? (8 screws on the bottom) You have a version 4.

I have looked and I have a PS2…

  • Version 1, 2 or 3.
  • Version 4.

Version 1, 2 or 3 PS2.

Firstly, you have to unclip the front door of the disc drive.
Here are the directions for doing so (Power should be off):

  • Step 1: Get 2 small flathead screwdrivers (like the one you get in those micro screwdriver kits)
  • Step 2: The front of the drawer tray is simply clipped on at each end... So, taking great care,

Figure 1: cog 2.
Figure 1: cog 2.

unclip it with the screwdriver, as shown in the picture

Figure 2: tray open
Pin it
Figure 2: tray open

Take caution! Otherwise you might snap off one of the clips!
Now that you have done that turn on power and we begin…

  1. With GS2/AR2 disc 1 and dongle in turn on the power.
  2. Select Start Game.
  3. Select Without Codes.
  4. Now you will be asked to insert the disc.

So, as you might have worked out, you want to put in your backup.
DO NOT press the eject button!
Instead perform a swap method…

Cog Method
Step 1: There is a small hole at the bottom of where the tray was. It's about 2/3 along; if you look in there you will see a white cog.

Figure 3
Pin it
Figure 3

You might have to move the PS2 under a light to see it, because it is only a small hole.

Step 2: Then using a screwdriver

Figure 4
Pin it
Figure 4

turn the cog a bit at a time towards the front of the PS2. It is a bit stiff but it will turn OK.
If you are turning it the right way you will see a white plate above where the disk is start to move, keep turning... Out pops the tray.

Step 3: Place the backup that you wish to play into the disc drive.

Now all that’s left to do is… Press ‘X’
The game should boot. Enjoy.

Knife Method
Step 1: If possible get a small flash light. Shine a light underneath where the disk tray is. With the PS2 in the horizontal position, about a third from right, you will see a white pin.

Step 2: Using a plastic knife slide the pin to the far right. The tray will pop out.

Step 3: Now, put the backup that you wish to play into the disc drive. Push the tray firmly back in and using the knife, make sure the white pin has moved as far left as it can go.

Now all that’s left to do is… Press ‘X’
The game should boot. Enjoy.

If you want to play PSX backups on the PS2 use the following method:

PSX Backups
Turn on your PS2 and insert disc 2 of the discs that come with the AR2/GS2. Flick through the boot screens and select any cheats you may want etc. When you get to the screen that prompts you to open your PS2 and insert your games disk. DO NOT press the eject button, instead, use the cog/knife method to open the drive.

Once you have got the disk out, swap disks for a PS1/PSX backup. Firmly push the tray all the way in and close the tray, making sure you turn the cog or move the white pin, until the disk is locked in. At no point up to now should you have touched the eject or power button.
Now you may change the AR2/GS2 for your PS1/PSX memory card, if you wish.

Now all that’s left to do is… Press ‘X’
The game should boot. Enjoy.

If the backup will not boot it is probably and EA game or is protected in some way…
This is what to do:
EA Method
(Games must be patched)
Insert AR2/GS2 Disc 1.
Power down the PS2 (red light should now be on)
Power up the PS2 and keep the power button pressed.
Wait for the AR2 menu to appear.
Select Start Game.
Select Without Codes.
Let go of the POWER button... The CD tray will open.
Swap the AR2/GS2 disc for your backup disc (you have 4 seconds)
The CD tray will auto-close.
Press X.
That should be most of your troubles out of the way…

Version 4 PS2

Version 4 is more confusing than the others…
NOTE: You must have a GS2/AR2 version 1.4!
If you don’t mind about voiding warranty and don’t mind opening up your PS2 here is what to do:
With the following method patching is not needed!
Load up the GS2 v1.4 and either hold RESET if you have a Modchip.com or NEO 2 mod-chip... OR leave your PS2 cover off and be prepared to do the LH swap at this screen.

LH Swap:
1) Place PS2 as shown in the picture and remove the marked screws.

2) Next remove the top cover but be careful! There are two cables connected, so remove the cover slowly.

3) Look at this picture.

Remove the black disc (there is just a bit of adhesive on it).

Now just remove the Eject/Reset button from the dock- there are no screws holding it so just pull it out gently. Next, remove the 4 screws (screws numbered 1-4 in the picture you just looked at).
4) Now remove the CD-reader cover,

and take out the white disc. The white (magnetic) disc is needed

to lock down the PS2 game you will be playing.

5) Now you can see the CD-ROM reader as pictured here.

Remove the drive tray

by unscrewing these 2 screws and sliding the right side out slowly.

6) Your PS2 should now look similar to this!

2) Once there, swap your EA Game CD back-up with the GS2 v1.4 using either method above... but DON'T PRESS 'X'! The CD will be spinning when doing this- it's supposed to be so that your PS2 doesn't "know" that you're swapping CD's.
3) OK. Now, once your EA Game CD back-up is inside the PS2 this screen should still be ON (see Figure 5. boot screen.).

Now, just press O + R1 on your game pad at the SAME TIME and your EA Game CD back-up will load up!

On the other hand… If you do not want to open up your PS2 perform the cog/knife method. Games must be patched!
Firstly, you have to unclip the front door of the disc drive.
Here are the directions for doing so (Power should be off):
Step 1: Get 2 small flathead screwdrivers (like the one you get in those micro screwdriver kits)

Step 2: The front of the drawer tray is simply clipped on at each end... So, taking great care, (with the see Figure 2: tray open) unclip it with the screwdriver, as shown in the picture Figure 1: cog 2. Take caution! Otherwise you might snap off one of the clips!
Now that you have done that turn on power and we begin…
1) With GS2/AR2 disc 1 and dongle in turn on the power.
2) Select Start Game.
3) Select Without Codes.
4) Now you will be asked to insert the disc.
So, as you might have worked out, you want to put in your backup.
DO NOT press the eject button!
Instead perform a swap method…

Cog Method
Step 1: There is a small hole at the bottom of where the tray was. It's about 2/3 along; if you look in there you will see Figure 3 white cog.
You might have to move the PS2 under a light to see it, because it is only a small hole.

Step 2: Then using a screwdriver (see Figure 4) turn the cog a bit at a time towards the front of the PS2. It is a bit stiff but it will turn OK.
If you are turning it the right way you will see a white plate above where the disk is start to move, keep turning... Out pops the tray.

Step 3: Place the backup that you wish to play into the disc drive.

Now all that’s left to do is… Press ‘X’
