Hiya everyone,
I'm new to the list, just joined today so I'm looking forward to
receiving lots of mailings about the Charlies.
I'm living in Manchester. I moved here in March, and its a fuckin'
excellent place to be. I'm from a town in South Wales which boasted 2
nightclubs, so I've been like a little kiddie locked in a sweet shop
since I've been here!
Anyway about the Charlatans...I think that their last album was
brilliant, one of the best albums of last year. Favourite tracks are
Feelin Holy, Just Lookin and Crashin In. Haven't seen them live yet,
but hopefully will when they tour next. Saddened to hear about the
recent tragedy.
Hope that this is a (some) friendly list. Other bands that I listen
to are:- Manic Street Preachers, Stone Roses, Oasis, Suede, Blur,
The Smiths, The Wannadies, The Cardigans, U2, Pulp, Bernard Butler,
just to name a few...
Anyone off the list from Manchester or Wales?

recorded without rob collins - produced by Steve Hillage. Incidently if

I think that the Dylans are still together. They released a second album a
couple of years ago. The video for one song (I'll be Back to Haunt You) was
pretty cool, with the band dressed up to look like aging rockers.

I know exactly what you mean! It was a fantastic era...the early 90's
really sucked after Madchester disintigrated. It really wasn't until 1994
that music started to get exciting again.

I just got a copy of Isolation the other day...it is brilliant. The version of
"Happen to Die" that they do on here is unlike any other I have ever heard.
They also do a version of "10th and 11th" that is probably pretty hard to come
by. If anyone would like a copy, please let me know. The sound quality on it
is excellent.

and the Charlatans new single and album wont be released until a couple of
months after the UK and European releases.
Also I want a really good grumble at the people in charge of the Charlatans

The Charlatans were fantastic.
What could have been a really difficult performance for them went so well.
Still there was definately something missing during Weirdo. Other than that
it was 'daylight metal' (to quote Tim). New single sounded great, another
new song not sure of the title was fine. The played all the favourites and
more, about 11 songs I think. Suprisingly lots of songs in just the 50 mins
they played. Tim was in good voice and Primal Screams keyboardist did Rob
proud.
We all missed Rob though and although the band never mentioned him we were
all thinking of him. Cheers to OASIS for dedicating Cast No Shadow to him,
it fitted well.

the replacement keyboard player is meant to be the guy from Primal Scream.
I'm going to the Virgin Festival on the 18th and wondered whether it was

Suzanne,
I'd have emailed you privately about the Wales bit but my message was returned.
I grew up in Swansea (well Morriston actually). I can sympathise with you
having grown up in a town with only 2 nightclubs since I spent my Christmas
holiday back in Wales and we were staying in Cymer and spent all the time at
my relatives in Nelson and Quaker's Yard. Thank god for Newport and TJ's
being only an 1/2 hour away. Plus Swansea did have one half decent indie club.
Did you know Rob Collins lived down in Swansea for a while (right after the
whole been in jail bit)?
Anyway, I really have no idea why I actually emailed you but you did ask if
anyone was from wales.

Just curious, where abouts in Australia are you?
Also, I am so so so sick of the constant rumours that the Charlatans are
going to tour Australia - I've heard for years that they're coming out here
(at one time it was rumoured they were coming out with Ride which would have
been cool) but still no confirmation. And I had an argument with someone
last week who said they were supposed to be supporting Oasis but that since
Rob died they're not. Well I hadn't heard that one, I'd only heard that
Pulp or the Bluetones were to be supporting, but I'm kinda glad that they're
not coming with Oasis as I didn't bother to get tickets to see them and
would have been so devastated if they played with Oasis and I missed them
but a whole lot of Wonderwall fans got to see them. But really, I'd be
surprised if they ever make it out here as I'm sure their sales aren't too
huge - I don't know many kids who've bought anything of theirs since Some
Friendly. Then again, their albums do get local releases so I guess they
must sell a bit. Well now I'm just babbling.
About getting a copy of the new single and album without waiting for local
release... Why not try the Central Station web page? I'm pretty sure
they've got mail order and they'd pretty definitely get import copies real
soon. Plus you wouldn't have to wait as long for them to come from
overseas. Or another good Aust. record store with a web site you can order
from is Polyester. My friend does their British orders and I know for
certain he'd have ordered a heap of Charlatans stuff so you could definitely
get it from there...

That's interesting I always thought that the Stone Roses and more so
the Charlatans owe a lot to Jethro Tull circa Thick as a Brick but I was
too embarassed to confess my admiration for one of the dinosaurs of rock

After being hooked on Ride immediately upon first listen of the shark ep
"today forever", I've been a devout passenger on the trip... Despite what
some critics say, the new one "Tarantula" is every bit as good as their
earlier stuff. In fact, I was listening to it when I read your message.

First, cheers to Kate for her exquisite musical taste. I hope you are able
to see some of those bands live. I have similar problems seeing Brit bands
live here in Mpls.
As for the Trainees, at least one of them needs to be put back to basic

lyrics sound like Stone Roses??

Thanks for the sites Kate. Im from Perth, and while we have had Ride out
here (on their own!!), there seems little chance the Charltans will arrive
top billing. Aparently it is true about the Charlies touring with Oasis, I
read it at the NME site. Id rather see them on their own though.
Perth aint bad for CD's but you'll have to really pay to get anything
earlier than usual.
Your right about the sales of Some Friendly though. Since then no one Ive
talked to seems to have heard of their new stuff, and all of it is top class.

NO WAY! I am absolutely about to die. If they tour with Oasis and don't
play any shows on their own I will just die! This is the worst thing I've
heard in ages, like since hearing that the Roses split. I feel queezy.
Have you heard any more about it since the NME thing? If true, it is the
biggest injustice of my life. Do you have tickets for Oasis? I didn't
bother because figured since they're playing at the huge tennis centre
there'll be too many annoying people there. And now both shows have sold
out. I could just puke. Kate.

Now come on. Are you telling me that the Stone Roses' lyrics are any
better than Jethro Tull's? They are at least as banal. Listen to the bass
and keyboards and you'll hear a similarity between the Charlatans and
Jethro Tull. It cannot be ignored. As for lyrics, one or two lines per
song do not good lyrics make. I'm not slagging them off, I don't listen
to the Stone Roses for the lyrical content, its for the groove.

Its OK, dont puke! They cancelled touring. They are only doing some shows
in Britian in the short term with a replacement keyboardist. The closest
they'll be coming to Australia, is Japan. I cant afford that! Their tour

all the time. There are some people who don't have a thoughts in their heads
that weren't put there by NME or some other dopey magazine they paid too much
for. Please stop wasting your time and money on Select, and take a Music
Appreciation course or something. Journalists often know a lot less than the
general public. Some of you would become extremely distraught if, for
instance, Paul McCartney suddenly declared that he'd been misquoted about
liking anything by the Beach Boys. (And let's just keep in mind some of the
no-brainer stuff Paul put out after his Beatles years). Please learn to form
