Ú Addictorial ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
³ Yahoo issue #2 -- Aug 14th, 1994 ³
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Addict/Topaz Ù

After a few painful months, we're back.
Issue #2 was surprisingly released in
time... Yes, in time. We did announce
that this issue will be released after
Assembly'94 - mainly to have something
from the party presented here, and of
course Doom didn't cross a finger for
the mag since he had to code his intro.

So what has changed? Merely nothing. The
interface is still the same - though
this time we have Razorback's graphics.
The font is still sloppy, there might be
a beeeeeep on some computers when they
keys are touched. Anyway, please, don't
complain about the bugs, since, in the
next issue there will be a NEW INTERFACE
without a lot less bugs. The graphics
mode will still be one with a rather low
resolution. That is because we want to
use non-SVGA modes, AND include graphics
inside articles. Yes, that is the idea
of graphical articles we promised last
time. It'll be implemented in issue #3.

Sorry for using Gusplay, but tell me, if
there is another newer player which
supports 8 chn mods, GUS and SB, linking
to pure assembler and doesn't bug your
whole code. I'd be happy to use it.

No Gusmax review, since it wasn't
received.

In all this issue is not even close to
what it was promised to be, but I hope
you still can enjoy it for a short
period.

- Ed

Ps. If the tune from the intro is still
playing, please press F1 to load the
main mag tune, it's much more relaxed..

Some of the news are in the original
form they were received, some of them
are edited.

ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Group news ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

Bonzai ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

As stated in issue #1, most of S!P DK
(except one person) left for Bonzai as
it didn't want to be a sub-groub of S!P
anymore. Imagine: The all-time famous
Bonzai as a subgroub? Good thing you got
independent :)

As Bonzai went independent, Ulrik
Henriksen, Cyron, Xerox and Exorcist
left S!P and joined Bonzai.

After that, CyberTron and Mindmover left
Distorsion to join Bonzai.

So the members of BZ are now:

Trap (original member and
founder)
Walt (original member)
Metal (original member)
Kwon (original member)
Zyborg (joined when Bonzai PC
was founded - Came
from Dunex (C64))
Seap (joined when Bonzai PC
was founded - The new
T.H.A.!)
CyberTron (from Distortion)
Mindmover (from Distortion)
The Partycrasher (Kilroy BBS Sysop)
Ulrik Henriksen (ex-S!P)
Xerox (ex-S!P)
Cyron (ex-S!P)
Exorcist (ex-S!P)

The reason why almost everybody left S!P
was that Reebok/S!P wanted to kick Ulrik
Henriksen because he heard some rumours
about him (and Trap) having talked about
kicking Firefly. Without even checking
it out Reebok kicked Ulrik - As a result
of this, and many other small
'happenings' with Reebok's big-time lier
tendency they, Bonzai, chose to leave
S!P because they couldn't stay in a
group with such bad communication lines
(both ways!!!). BZ took all the members
of interest and left!

Right now they are working on a demo for
release this autumn, named SEXUAL
DISASTER! - No data available!

(Trap mailed all this before the release
of issue #1 but since Disperin's
routings made all the netmail to me in
GSN go to Lemming, I didn't receive the
message)

Cascada Demo Section ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

Doom left CDS and is now looking for a
new _cool_ group to join. His Assembly
'94 demo was released under his old
label - Doomsday! Productions.

Also O'Hara left CDS.

Criminal Gang ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

The Hungarian diskmag Terror News -
published by the Criminal Gang - have
released the 50th issue on the end of
April. The magazine came first out on
Commodore +4, and later on PC. The 51st
issue should have been out on July. Get
it! Are 50 issues a new interscenial
record?

Diffusion ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

J-P left Diffusion as he wanted to try
his luck in Silents PC, it's not sure if
he's accepted or not but at least he
didn't mention Silents as his group.

Grif ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

Grif, Absolute and Chromance might
organize another party soon in Hungary.

Alma joined Grif as a coder. The rumor
tells he's one of the best coders in
Hungary.

Rian left ex-ABSOLUTE!-PC and joined
Grif as a musician.

After Grif releases their Assembly'94
stuff (demo, intro, 4kb intro, mjoozik,
graphics) they will be 'a bit' inactive
on the PC scene as they will start
making multimedia software for big
companies, and games for OCEAN.

exception and take a board in Finland.

J!P might not release anything big for a

'95 :-) (not confirmed, they have just
chatted a bit about this with Phantom..)

Jeskola! might release Hektor issue #2
in the next six months.. The outfit is
already working :)

Biiiig amount of boards has joined the

their new boardlist from GSN.ANNOUNCE.
Hint, hint! GSN is now public!

Citybomber/Supreme was kicked out of
Supreme because their leader heard that
Citybomber got an offer to join TRSI,
and before he could even join TRSI
Citybomber got kicked out of Supreme.
Anyway, Citybomber didn't join TRSI
because he wanted to be in a legal only
group. If your group needs a good
mailswapper on PC (I can tell you that
Citybomber is one of the best
megaswappers on C64) contact him.
(If you don't know his address you can
get it from Lemming/Jeskola!)

Firefly changed his handle to Thomas. He
is currently doing Internet PR for Imp
Cda. Any votes/articles can be sent to
his email address (check the addys
section).

Surprise! Productions has got a new
division: polish. It was made of some
ex-Substance members: Unreal (coder,
mainorg.), Jasper (coder), Marqs (code),
Saracen (gfx). After some time Marqs
>>changed handle<< to Camel, and finally
Scorpik joined from Amiga group Picco
(ex-Pic Saint Loup) as musician (2nd
best musician on Amiga in Poland). BTW,
Scorpik won last Primavera'94 compo and
some papermag compos. All members:
Camel, Jasper, Saracen, Scorpik, Unreal.

Ú Reactions ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Miscellaneous people Ù

This time we have the bugs of the first
issue to react =)

ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Yep, quite good mag, but the fonts are
fucky! Change them because it's quite
hard to read the texts. Ah, the
scrolling in menu is TOO slow, add Page
Down and Up options and that will be ok.
Find more cool gfx! I had some problems
with running diskmag with option
"Silence" - the intro hang. Also title
screen sucks with colours. The voting
system is one of the best ever, or
possibly THE BEST. Congratulations on
having invention! I like also that all
the comments are on, so mag seems to be
more user-friendly and opened for
people. Stay cool!
And...Ehm... Ugh, Well, Yyy.. nice
music! Gfx - try some more diffrent
colors (convince gfx-artist to make full
256 piccy), or change mode to
€640*480*16. The bar upscreen - the shit
on the upper bar disappears when running
mag with less number of Hz, e.g. 8000,
 16000.

- Unreal/Surprise! Productions

Believe me - all the bugs you have
mentioned are known ;) .. Some of the
things you noted are totally different
on other machines - depending on the
speed of CPU and/or the display card.
Some slowdown and ill synchronization
was caused by DemoVT, since we didn't
use it in the poll mode. This time we
have to use GusPlay, which is not good
for the non-GUS-owing people - like me.
But at least the player won't bug. Yes,
we know wall the possible ways to make
the reading more comfortable (we were
going to add pgup/pgdn/home/end etc.
support in the first issue, but as you
can see, they aren't even in this issue)
and still the interface is painful to
use.
About the graphics.. Well, Razorback's
in-mag-picture was unusable. He fixed it
and now it is used in this issue. The
gfx artist who drew the beginning
pictures did them just as some freelance
part-time work, I don't know how soon we
weill see his gfx in the mag again. The
beginning picture was in fact in the
640x480x16 screen mode, but it was
scaled from the original 320x256x16
(since he is an Amiga artist..). Yes, I
agree, the font is sloppy, and this time
it is not much better. I just haven't
received a better font so I have to use
my own - with results that are visible
here.

- Ed
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Graphics in first issue of Yahoo!
Diskmagazine sucked badly! Uhm.. Please
make better looking interface+fonts in
the next time. Also try to make some
effects to the intro part also.

- Disperin/Admire

Well, as it has been said, I had to rely
on my emergency graphics since we
couldn't get anything better. The font
is still sloppy, and the interface is
the same. Well, I hope the new interface
will be finished for the next issue.
About those effects, well as you know,
there hasn't been any time (for Doom) to
create a cool intro - mostly because of
Assembly. So now we have time. How about
some phong shading in the next issue?

- Ed
ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
Because of the limited space (and your
limited patience), I'll keep the most
important points only.
I'm a Formula 1 fan, and I was happy
to read the article about this year's
San Marino Grand Prix. But I also found
a little bug. The latest tragic race
accident - before Imola, of course -
happened in 1982, but more than one
month later than Villeneuve's one. At
the start of the Canadian Grand Prix on
June 13th, Riccardo Paletti, on his
first Grand Prix, hit Pironi's stalled
Ferrari, and died. I think you already
remember, anyway. (I read about the
accident in Geoffrey Williams's book,
'McLaren - A Racing History'. I bought
the book in England last year.)
Your voting system is really
absolutely COOOL! The first normal and
reasonable voting system introduced on
PC!
I just want to remark that the mag's
outfit is very difficult from today's
standard, and I liked it. But I'm afraid
I found a bug in the code. In the menu
you can scroll down beyond the 'Final
worms' articles, and you'll see some
empty lines, and finally some trash.
It would be a bit more user-friendly
(what a nice expression!) to have some
page numbers or a scrollbar to show the
size of the article, and how much I've
read. Of course the mouse support is
badly needed, but I think it will
already be implemented by the time you
read this sheet. But keep the keyboard
as well! In addition a printer function
would be useful, I think.
I would be happy to see more non-scene
articles in the mag, for example about
sports (the World Cup is at its finish,
so there's a lot to be written about
it!), CD and book reviews, perhaps some
short stories, poems and other pieces of
art. You could make a gallery as well, I
liked it in Top Secret, for instance.
Then, back to the scene, some hardware
/software oriented things (about a new
card or utility, or about general
hardware things), and articles
concerning coding and stuff could be
included. It would be interesting to
compare coding on C64 and on PC, for
example!
The scene encyclopedia can be expanded
by your coders' remarks about some
effects. (How it is done (outlines only,
of course), why it is easy/difficult to
code, what are the limitations.) You
could also write about a famous group
in details in each issue to let
everybody know how it started and
developed. OK, that's enough, I stop
here!

- Zed/Remal

How about it, PC'ers? _THIS_ is a
reaction! Thanks, Zed! I haven't seen
reactions as cool as this one in ages.
The last time was when I was reading a
C64 mag three years ago. But now to the
point..
Thank you for the corrective informa-
tion about the F1 thing. I hope the
writer, Tint/Digital, sees it.
About the outfit. Well, it's something
I would call 'a breeze from the past'.
The bug you reported, in the main menu,
is the first bug we didn't note before
the release of issue #1. I mean, the bug
was there before, and it was fixed, but
somehow it lurked back into the program.
This present interface, on the other
hand, has freaked us out, and we'll redo
it completely. Nothing else will be done
for the present code of the present
interface. We'll concentrate on making a
new one from scratch. And it'll be done
co-operatively by me and Doom - so the
mag won't be that much Doom-dependant.
About all the article ideas... Well,
they are very welcome. There's just this
one problem. I, of course, will write as
much as I can, and as often as I get
inspiration, but I still need to edit
and compile every issue. D'Arc & Scape
/Topaz are actually famous of their
stories in our C64 mag, Fresh'n'Sticky.
I'll try to get them to write something.
But for the rest, I need to get some
more co-editors.. (Trap! Have you
written anything? Did The Partycrasher
tell you I nominated you into the hated

ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Miscellaneous people Ù

Hey, if you have spared your time in
voting, you can advertise in Yahoo!

In the next issue we will have a new and
different interface, and the new limit
for the size of one advertisement is now
40x20 characters.

If you want to make some cool ascii
logos etc. please notice the font size
and screen mode that is used! Logos
drawn in the 80x25 mode will "flatten",
so better use 80x50 (or 40x25) for
drawing them.

Ú How to vote ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Addict/Topaz Ù

Since every other magazine wants you to
give a topten for them, we decided to
let you give the points the way _YOU_
want. In each category you are able to
give a number of points for as many
entries you want. The scale is 0-10
points. You can give the same value for
as many entries as you want. This way
you can give your honest opinion about
every single group in the scene.
Especially if you don't know which entry
is the best, you can give all of your
favorite entries the same points. The
system is easy - you'll get the hang of
it pretty quickly.

The categories are:

Best demo groups
þ Vote for any active demo group. (or a
group in the demo scene) The group
must have at least _one_ release on
PC. If a group has joined another
group, the old group's releases shall
be counted for the new group.
Best coders
þ Vote for any active coder.
Best graphicians
þ Vote for any active graphician.
Best musicians
þ Vote for any active musician.
Best demos / half a year
þ Vote for any demo released during the
last six months before the release of
the next issue of Yahoo (15.4.1994-
15.10.1994). All non-party dentros
and dentros competed in a demo
competition at a party belong to this
category.
Best intros / half a year
þ Vote for any intro released during the
last six months before the release of
the next issue of Yahoo (15.4.1994-
15.10.1994). Dentros competed in an
intro competition at a party belong to
this category.
Best demos ever
þ Vote for any demo ever released. All
non-party dentros and dentros competed
in a demo competition at a party
belong to this category.
Best intros ever
þ Vote for any intro ever released.
Dentros competed in an intro
competition at a party belong to this
category.
Best disk mags
þ Vote for any disk mag with an issue
released during the last six months
before the release of the next issue
(15.4.1994-15.10.1994).

"Any" group, etc. doesn't include you or
your group(s). So you are allowed to
vote anyone, even us, except you, your
group(s) or any member of your group(s).
Of course, all entries must be active on
PC.

The charts will be 'Top xx', where xx is
an amount of entries, large enough to
match the number of votes, but small
enough not to let one-point-only entries
be always in the charts.

NOTE! If you vote for a single person,
state his group in the entry, too. The
same goes for demos, intros, etc. please
give us the group.

If the rules will prove somehow
defective, the publishers of Yahoo will
reserve the right to modify the rules
without an announcement.

Top 10s suck - Top 50s rule! =)

Sonic PC and Impact Studios entered the
TOP10 (by doing nothing?), Admire and
Xography fall down.

Zwilight Tone - Twilight Zone or not?
Tell me more about it =)

As Cascada Virtual Reality Section
released a demo - totally separate from
CDS - it shall be taken as a separate
group. Don't vote for CDA, or Imp Cda
anymore, vote for CDS or CDA VR! In this
issue all ImpCda votes have been put for
CDS, as before Assembly the product to
vote for - Hex Appeal - has been a
product of CDS. But - does CDS exist
anymore?

Eh.. We (Topaz) are still on the chart,
though we haven't even released a real
demo on the PC ;) .. Don't_take_it_
seriously.

Sorry for the mistake in the last issue.
Votes for Hoax weren't accepted - though
wasn't there a Hoax issue released after
Assembly '93? But anyway, votes for Hoax
aren't accepted in this issue.. And that
goes for Imphobia, too - as good a mag
it has been and even if one issue is
skipped - a new issue wasn't released
till Aug 14th, so it was disqualified.
Darkness! I hope to see a new _hot_
issue of Imphobia really soon!

Trap! I decided to put your "private"
message here, as a little extra reaction
and write a reply for it.

CUT THIS SECTION! - It's lame! Why
should people vote for magazines! It has
something to do with you guyz wanting to
be on the charts, eh? hehe! I used to
make a mag on the C64 (Lethal News) and
we made the same stupid mistake - You'll
feel fucking bad the day Yahoo! reaches
#1! Believe me!

- Trap/Bonzai

If it was for wanting to see us (me) on
the chart, yeah, but that is not the
case! The reason why the magazine chart
even exists, is to see, how many, and
what magazines people think there
actually are. They always say: "There
are too many magazines in the scene".
Yeah, so how many of them are released
often? Look at the chart! The limit is
six months - a time in which every self-
respecting editor should manage to build
a new issue. Five f#####' magazines, of
which two have been released more than
once - at the moment! When there are
enough regularly released magazines, not
just those "he-hey let's release a mag"
and "o-oh didn't get enough articles and
votes so let's quit" magazines, the
chart will be happily removed. But at
the moment, you, and everyone else. Do
not look at the positions, or number of
votes. See how many entries there are.
Yahoo #1 was released a few months ago
and I didn't feel bad! And I don't feel
bad even now.

ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Top 8 Ù

Everyone who has read Mamba on C64, will
remember its great Billboard charts.
They were a collection of different
phrases said by various persons during
the time between the new and previous
issues. We wanted to put the same type
of chart in here, too.

The two months have been exciting,
believe me. Here are a few interesting
captures. Disperin still rules the
chart! =)

1. "I don't play with little soldiers,
it's my little brother if you didn't
know." - Disperin

2. "Hey, don't you remember how much fun
we and Jate had when we were playing
with little soldiers last weekend?"
- Lemming

3. "I was excepting a more intelligent
reply from you too. That's what we
are doing all the time." - Disperin

4. "Assembly pc 64kb intro & demo compos
were stright from the deepest
'deepest analride'" - Apathy

5. "Huh, I didn't notice any techno
concert." - Betacarotine

6. "Oh, don't call me a bozo, b-coz i
wAnNA b a fRiENd 0f sUcH a /<-rAd
ELiTE-dude!" - Jate

7. Lemming said: "And you are repeating
yourself once again?", and was
answered "Actually so are you." by
- Disperin

8. "Well, I'm not a puppet what every
asshole can kick when ever he wants"
- Disperin

Note! Don't vote for these charts, we
collect them by ourselves.

Ú Assembly '94 party report ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Addict/Topaz Ù

I decided to write you a traditional
party report. Not a clean report of what
happened at the party, but a description
of one person's trip to Assembly.

Day 1 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

We (me, Gremlin/Beyond Force and a dude
called Mika Jalkanen) had decided to
leave for the Party at 7:00. As we live
in Savonlinna, Finland, it takes some
time to drive to Helsinki (4 - 5 hours,
actually). At about 7:14 Gremlinn drove
to our place with Mika, and we packed my
stuff (My Peezee etc.) into the car.
Then we drove off to Doom's joint to
fetch his GUS which he had promised to
lend me for the party. Doom was already
awake, and we found out that he hadn't
slept a bit as he had been coding his
64KB intro (Passion) for the whole
night. So we watched his intro, removed
the GUS and at last (it was 8:00
already) headed to Helsinki.
The car trip went quite fast. We
stopped at Heinola, at a puny Shell cafe
to have some coffee with ripoff prices.
Some time before arriving at Helsinki
I opened my bag and unfolded my ancient
Helsinki map, which I had found in one
of my parents' souvenir boxes. Well, Hki
can't have changed that much in 15 years
- or can it? =) Anyway, when we arrived
inside the city limits my demanding job
as a map reader began. The ride to the
Ice Hall was a rather horrifying
experience, though we lived thorugh it.
We drove to the parking lot next to
the Ice Hall (SVUL parking permit
required - who cares), parked, and got
out. All our stuff was left in the car,
except our wallets with a few hundred
FIMs ready for the organizers to be
ripped off.
"Oh boy. This looks like some sports
happening", I thought - until we came to
the other side of the hall. And there it
was. The demonic queue for the tickets
was miles long. No can do, we just went
for it. When we where about at halfway
to the ticket joint, we spotted Hazor/
Beyond Force (the other C64 compo
organizer, the one at the keys of the
C64 during the compos). He told us that
there was one totally free ticket desk
inside, next to the VIP desk. He
confirmed it, and we went past the whole
queue, inside, and bought our tickets.
Then it was a bit boring for a while,
wandering around. Then, after wandering
alone after a while, I spotted Razorback
outside the building, and bounced to
have a chat. Then we went inside, to
look for anyone familiar. Eventually we
found no one. At that time it was
publicly announced, that everyone has to
move their cars from the parking lot, so
we started bouncing back and forth to
the parking lot, in search for Gremlin.
After some time passed, we accidentally
came across with a bunch of familiar-
looking people, consisting of some
members of Extend and Topaz. After a
chat with them we went for the parking
lot to write down some info to the
questionnaire forms.
The search for Gremlin continued.
Before finding him we (at this time it
was me and Razorback again) found a cool
place to have our stuff in. It was a
sort of a table, blocking an entrance to
the audience stand on the second floor.
What was best, it was right in front of
the middle videoscreen, and at the
moment no one was there. At that time we
really wanted to find Gremlin, as I
wanted to have my stuff/computer out of
the car. Then we saw the Tribal doods
and showed them our place, at which they
decided to stay.
After that Razorback and I decided to
buy some paper, some tape and a few
markers - and after buing them we
decorated the place with Topaz signs.
Eventually I found Gmn and we were
able to get my stuff out of the car.
Doom, Artifex & Hotshot/Complex and
Tint/digital finally arrived - they had
been delayed because of some fuckings
with getting the keys for Artifex's new
apartment.
The GSN meeting at 19:00 was rather
funny .. =) Lemming and iVY decided to
continue driniking, along with Elwood.
The all three had green hair at that
time. Hmm.. Some meeting =) I can't
remember any of us talking anything GSN
related ;)
The C64 compos were cool, though there
were too few entries, and people didn't
know how to vote. Trinomic's Best of
Trinomic was third in the demo compo, at
the position which would have been
earned by Antic with their Lunacy 6.
Also AMJ didn't get any position, though
his tune was excellent!
The 4chn music competition was rather
less surprising, though a song called
"Vote 4 me" surprised with its
originality. The gfx compo, then.. Well,
can you remember a great picture called
"Chaos in Tokyo"? In case you didn't
know, it was _COMPLETELY_ drawn without
any model pictures. No repainting. Of
course the repaintings won the compo. I
just would have liked to see how well
the winners could have drawn without a
model. The multichannel compo was really
boring! The tunes where almost alike.
You could really guess who were at the
jury.

Day 2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

The four hours of sleep was really
refreshing... Well, anyway, the morning
went on slowly. Me, Razorback and the
Tribal doods decided to get some
breakfast at Carrols. I can't remember
what happened on Saturday. Was it too
boring? =) Anyway, we watched the Doom
compo finals. Soon it was time for the
demointrocompos.
The 4kb intro compo really raised your
hopes for the forthcoming compos - since
it was cool.
The Amiga 40kb intro compo was rather
unexciting. Pygmy stroke again - and won
with a cool intro with one routine. That
one routine was fast, and it was well
used.
The PC 64kb intro compo began with
Doom's Passion. The public was really
quiet - it was us who clapped the most.
Nothing bad, I mean, but the audience
clapped for the slowish lightsourced
texture cube in Fyvush, but not for
Doom's gouraud-lightsourced texture or
gouraud glenz!
Then there was the Amiga demo compo
(not much of interest).
And at last, the PC demo compo. The
compo began with Epical's demonstration,
which really didn't let down your hopes
for the compo. But then it began.. A few
hours of complete shit! At last a few
good demos began to be showed, but no,
they had to be interrupted because the
sun would be rising. Why did you abort
Capacala's demo? I was really tired at
the moment, and now I can't remember
much about the compo products. CDAVR's
3D models were really cool. EMF really
kicked. Though not that much, if there
wouldn't have been that simple Gates
"morpher". Thank god the compo ended
(why in the hell there had to be an
endless amount of demos in the compo,
but only 10 tunes in the music compos,
etc.?).

Day 3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

The morning after the compos proceeded
with voting, then some sleeping on the
chairs and waiting for the results. Then
the whole thing was over. Me, Gremlin
and M. Jalkanen left the place, went for
Gremlin's godmother to have a shower and
some breakfast.
On the way back we stopped to eat
something - as we were really hungry. We
were tired, and had to stop several
times to get some air. In the evening I
was so tired, that I fell asleep in the
middle of a sentence I was speaking.

Ú Assembly '94 facts ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Addict/Topaz Ù

No voting disks were available at the
moment the tickets began to be sold. The
first people in the line had to get
their disks from the info desk.

All flames for the bad demo compo
organization should be directed to Sonic
PC, since they were the PC compo
organizers ;)

In the PC 4KB intro compo, a wrong
version of Mental Design's Fractal
Dreams was shown. This version was the
final version, showing the group name
and full credits - to be spread. Another
version - meant for the compo - without
any credits was provided for the
organizers.

The GFX compo PC pictures were chosen
more likely with a random algorhithm.

The final multichannel compo tunes were
chosen by Lizardking/Triton, $volkraq/
Gollum and a third person. Lizardking's
tune was of course in the ten finalists.
As well as nearly nine other equally
boring tunes.

The organizers spread a rumor that the
cops took Lemming/Jeskola! to jail
during Assembly. Also there was a rumor
that he would have been take to a
hospital. Neither one is true.

The "live" technoconcert by some unknown
(?), unorganied and unimaginative techno
pop group didn't quite work out because
of some problems with their playback. Or
did the main dood run out of "Come on's"
or "Go's"? :)

Future Crew was disqualified from the
64KB intro compo.

There was no Triton demo at the party.
They were busy coding FastTracker 2 and
playing music during the compos.

The Complex people chatted on Assembly
with Lord Cyrix about the lost Party'93
prizes; it seems that Venior is the one
to be blamed because the winners didn't
get their prizes.

HiRMU was 2nd on the Assy'94 football
match. Exotic Men were the winners.
Bribing?

Ú Assembly '94 feedback ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Questioned by Addict/Topaz Ù

I decided to ask the people in GSN about
a few basic things related to Assembly
and their trip back from the party.

The questions:

1. What did you do on the day Assembly
'94 ended?

2. What did you do/How did you feel on
the next morning?

3. What really r000led at the party?

4. What really _really_ _REALLY_ sucked
on the party?

Drow/Tribal ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

1. I went home and and go to shower
After that I watch some Asm'94
products what I got. And before
getting sleep I watch TV.
And when I went to bed clock was
0:27. ;)

2. I felt megac00l.

3. Meeting new scene guys.

4. PC Demo compo, PC Demo compo, PC Demo
compo, PC Dem........

Lunatic ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

4. Techno concert! Buuuuuuuuu!

Vulture/Wild Light ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

1. Packed my things and traveled to home
Very uncomfortable trip... Our driver
was so tired that we had to stop 2
times just to sleep..:) When I got
home I ate like an animal and ..no, I
went straight to shower and AFTER it
I ate..:) And then I just stayed
awake until 21:00 when I went to
sleep...

2. Heh... I slept the whole morning and
woke up at 3:00 pm.. Well.. I was
tired, but didn't want to sleep the
whole day, so I just had to wake up..

3. I met nice people, and all compos
except PC's demo compo were really
cool.. But PC's winning demo was good
too.. The morpher ruled..:)

4. I expected something more from PC's
democompo.. It was kinda
disappointment..:( But best demos was
cool.. (fortunately)

Lemming/Jeskola! Productions ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ

1. Well, we ran to the ratikka but we
didn't run fast enough, then we had
to wait for another one. Then we ran
to the train, but also the train was
too fast for us (yes, it was a very
elite train ;), so we sat a few hours
on the trainstation and then took the
train to Tampere. On Tampere we (iVY,
Suhu, Razorback and a person who
doesn't have an alias so it doesn't
matter so much :) went to McDonalds
and ate some garbagefood .. well, not
iVY, he went to a local pub which was
near (in?) the trainstation and took
a few drinks. After our meal (and
iVY's drink) we found JMagic and
Phantom on the trainstation, so now
there were six of us waiting for the
train to Jyv„skyl„. Ok, the train
came, and it was fullll of people, so
we had to sit in the restaurant
department all the time and order a
glass of water every now because the
stupid waitress was always bugging us
:) ... oh by the way my voice was
totally fucked up at that moment
because I had shouted too much :)
Ok, then we came to Jyv„skyl„, and I
found out when I called my mother
that my father was in the cinema
watching Flintstones with my
sister's son. So I waited until the
movie ended and my father drove me
home. Then my father went somewhere,
and brought me a perhepizza from the
most excellent Pizza place Kotipizza
(yummy!). After the delicious pizza I
took a looooooooooong sauna and a
shower. After that I checked out my
C64 sends which came to me on Friday,
put the Assyfiles online, watched TV
a bit and finally fell asleep.

2. Well, at least not hangover, I
survived of it on Saturday already :)
I felt very tired next morning,
because I woke up when a telephone
rang on my room for ages so I had to
pick it up, after that my sister's
son came to visit us (aargh!) which
kept me awake.

3. Beer and sauna :) Ups! Well, I really
loved watching Rage's funny demo on
the big screen but no, that wasn't
the "climax" of Assembly :) .. well,
when we were drinking our beers at
the big rock next to the icehall,
there we met some funny people who
were also 'a bit' drunk and we had
some fun with them.

4. Every now and then it was too boring!
And I really didn't like it when I
was trying to sleep during Friday-
Saturday night and the organizers
start playing tenkos and GUS
commercials, argh .. so I had to wake
up, but there was nothing to do!
(except listen to tenkos and watch
GUS commercials :).

The quality of the demos in Abduction'94
was higher than I actually expected and
in my personal top 3 were Jeskola's and
Complex's demos and this one. In code,
there are no real surprises. Only old
effects are used, but they are quite
fast. First there's a writer on blue
background with a decent but not very
nice font. Then, there's a wobbly-type
plasma and a cool zoom&rotate, which is
full-screen and VERY fast (How large
pixels? -Ed). Then, another writer
appears after a wobbling JAMM logo and
behind the writer are some bouncing
balls. After some text, a not-a-real-
jelly-vector appears, which is also
lightsourced. At the end, the whale from
the rotater appears. In all, a cool
intro, and under 40kb.

Code ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 70%

Nothing new and special, but the
routines are generally quite fast. I
especially liked the zoom&rotate.

Graphics ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 65%

The Jamm-logo was decent and the whale
was cute, but in all, the graphics were
bleak and dry. They were above average
comparing to the other products in
Abduction party.

Music ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 25%

Oh dear, SOOOOOOOOoooo boring. I didn't
like the tune at all and it didn't fit
at all into this demo. It still kept
some pace with it and from there, the
25%.

Design ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 87%

It seems like a lot of effort was
actually put into designing this demo.
It has some great ideas, it goes on
quickly and works great as a whole.

Overall ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 70%

Even after some bugs and dull music, the
demo is good. Above average certainly.
It lasts a long time, if you play some
good tunes from your stereo system while
watching.

Overall ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ 80%

Move is a cool intro. The effects are
designed to change smoothly, with the
in-the-beginning-calculated-fractal as
the center of all action. Move was shown
on the screen in the compo, but it was
not in the top three - although I voted
for it :)

A 1x1 pixel fullscreen zoomer zooms in
and out the texts "Just", "Do it!" and
"Now!". The text is smooth all the way
in - it is either filled vectors or a
bitmap zoomer with images drawn with a
fillroutine in the beginning. Anyway,
after the first sequence of texts it
restarts and at the same time a
fullscreen glenz tunnel appears on the
screen. After that, everything on the
screen is glenz.

The introduction is a screen with some
uglyish calculated stuff and text. Then
there are a few Parallax-bars, followed
by an old C64ish starfield. Next there
is an object which resembles fractal
trees, z-rotating, and bending. The last
screen features a gouraud cube which
floats "through" a pic (some calculated
bars) on the screen.

The introduction begins with a Jamm logo
appearing on the screen with the mosaic
picture technique. Then it wobbles in 'n
out and goes away. A plasmic effect,
with some resemblence to water color
mixed in water, follows next. A cube
comes, with a filled upper part and a
lined lower part. Goes away, and then
there is a 2x2 filled "burning" cube,
on the top of the screen the parts of
the cube are flamed using the fire
effect. Then some other weird plasmic
stuff, a lightsourced texturecube and
something which looks like a plasmacloud
fractal picture zoomrotated and color
cycled.
The intro supports only GUS. It is
said to work without one - but if you
don't own a GUS (and don't probably have
the ULTRASND variable set), the intro
uses GUS in port 220h - which usually
holds the sound card in your machine. If
you have no GUS, you have to set the
ULTRASND variable to point somewhere,
without any card. SET ULTRASND=240,1,3,
5,7 will do, if your soundcard is at
Ü220,7,1.

Welcome to the second release of The
Scene Encyclopedia - the ultimate data-
base for every freak! TSE is _the_ first
true collection of all scene related
stuff - history, information about
different effects, etc. You can
contribute in the making of TSE by
sending any information you think might
interest us.

Each time the release number is
increased, the whole encyclopedia is
released. If the possible character
after the release number is increased,
only the changed parts are released.

The information, at least at the moment,
isn't very accurate. Nearly all the FX
are first-on-C64, or C64 based - but
then again, it's on C64 where all the
great inventions have been made.

The format for an effect entry is as

Ú Vectors optimizing: fast sorting ÄÄÄÄ¿
ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Unreal/S!P Ù

Here is little thing which can help
boosting up the speed of your vector
procedures. I know all the best coders
use this or routine like this, but I
myself didn't find faster method to do
sorting. In some vector sources I have
found bubble-sort, quick-sort, beres-
method, but they are not so fast as the
one I will show You. It is faster and
easier, I've discovered it myself, but
it's so easy, that lot of other guys
have probably discovered it also. So,
off to work we go!

Bubble-sorting is easy to perform,
you just exchange elements,but bubble
sorting takes lot of time.Idea of this
one came to my mind on boring lesson
in my school when I was making another
stupid proggy. Look at this:

1. You prepare space for sorted table
number of elements is equal to highest
possible value. (Just test which will
be the biggest ever and do such block
in memory)(2: if you think that is
memory-eating, think about many-times
-used tables)
2. Clear(!) the prepared table.
3. Take n-th element. Then, use it
as index to the table, and write there
the value of an element.
4. Loop to 3 - number of times is
equal to number of elements.
5. Write to first table all values
from prepaired table,which are diffre
nt to zero.

You have probably realised that
this method is good, but... only when
every table element is diffrent. You
may use it anyway when You are sure
that all elements are different, not
in vectors only!
So, how to make it work with ALL
types of tables? Analyse this:

1. & 2. are the same.
3. Take n-element, increase number
at the adress indxed by number.
4. Loop to 3 as long as table long is
5. X=0 x=variable
6. X=X+1,if[x]<>,write to destination
tbale so many times as number stated
at that adress says.
7. Loop to 6.

Easy? Yes! It's bit slower coz MOVing
to mem's faster than INCreasing value
at the adress, but it is still very
fast.
Ok, it is fast, but what about coding
it? I am sure You can now do it, but
I have 1 thing to say: there are some
ways to speed up. Look at the following
example.
A. The Source will be tested for value
equal to 0 and then 1 (just diffrent)
The procedure isn't part of sort-code
but it is just for showing. It search
for non 0 elements and writes them.
; ds:si - pointer to first table,
; es:di - there will be no-0-elements
; cx=n2mber of table's elements
....
; number of cycles when.... 0 1
;
Sort: inc si ; 2 2
mov al,ds:[si] ; 4 4
jz WZero ; 7 3
mov es:[di],al ; - 2
inc di ; - 2
WZero: dec cx ; 2 2
jnz Sort ; 7 7
;
: TOTAL: 20 22

B. Second programm. : 0 1
:
Sort: inc si ; 2 2
mov al,ds:[si] ; 4 4
jnz NotZ ; 3 7
dec cx ; 2 -
jnz Sort ; 7 -
NotZ: mov es:[di],al ; - 2
inc di ; - 2
dec cx ; - 2
jnz Sort ; - 7
;
;18 26
; Timings for 386 processor

Yep, the two progs do the same, but
I used fact that when not jumping at
condition, Jcc takes less time! What
is the point? Here we go:
1. Use program 'A' when number of the
elements differ to 0 and 0-ones is
equal or similiar,
2. Use B if You have big tables and
little number of elements ( e.g. when
datas changes from very big to very
high ), coz 0 takes 18 and not 0 takes
24 cycles (something about). It is
little advantage, but why not to use
it?
There are yet some ways to do that,
but there is no sense to write about
it, I hope You caught what I mean.

Of course the examples needs little
re-building for using is second method
of sorting, but it is extremaly easy!

Ok pals, that is all for today ( or I
rater should say for tonight? )
