NEWS AND ANNOUCEMENTS:

A-TEAM PHILLY FEST '97: Well, some responses have finally come in, so I'm
going to propose a party date of Satruday APRIL 5. The drill, for those of
you who have come in the past, will be the same - festivities to start
around noonish, plenty of food, drinks, and fun. Plenty of A-Team videos
and games (including the Mr.T board game, or help me with the giant A-Team
coloring book I just recently found!) Location is Center City,
Philadelphia - easily accessible by car or train from areas outside of
Philly, just ask me for more details.

Please RSVP as soon as possible, so I can have a reasonable head-count on
who to expect. Friends, significant others, and anyone else invited as
well.

DIRK BENEDICT SPOTTING: The following comes courtesy of Rhonda...

Subject: NEW DIRK SPOTTING

This morning (Friday) the local morning show here, GOOD MORNING TEXAS,
had Dirk Benedict on to talk a little bit about KAMAKAZEE COWBOY and to
make a recipe "Buckwheat Noodle Pancakes."

They said some nice things about Dirk, about The A-TEAM in general, and
basically lost control to Dirk, it was great. What was even better was
Dirk's appearance, considering he flew in just for this show. For those
who've been concerned about how thin he's been looking, he looked
FANTASTIC on this show. He's gained a little more weight he doesn't have
the chicken neck or the hollow cheeks anymore.

I've mentioned to Nicole, that given some time, I should be able to get a
transcript done of the segment for the newsletter (Hopefully including
the recipe for the pancakes) and they were all making noises about
bringing him back to actually talk more about the diet, because Dirk said
he couldn't talk and cook at the same time.

PROPOSED ZINE ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM RITA RACTLIFFE: I received the following
flyer from Rita just the other day and wanted to pass along the
information...

DEJA VU - An A-Team Novella. Book Two of the "Nightmare" Trilogy.

He looked at her squarely. "I'm going back, Maggie. I've got to. It
isn't just Raskin...there are more POW's back there and I can do something
about it." He stood silently, waiting for her reaction.
As the full realization of what he said hit her, she lashed back,
stunned. "You can't. Hannibal, you can't. You're too well known in that
area now. It would be suicide if you were captured." He looked at her
soberly and nodded. "What if you do get caught again? Who'll pick up the
pieces? Hannibal, dammit, this is insanity. You can't really mean this!"
Hannibal took her into his arms. "Yes, Maggie, I do...and when you
think about it, rationally, you'll see I'm right."
"What if you're hurt - what are we supposed to do then?! Wasn't once
enough, goddammit?!?"
Her pushed away slightly, looking at her intently. "If I get hurt, or
worse...well, we'll just have to live with it."
"You mean I'll have to live with it!" She flung the words furiously
at him. Angry, and deeply hurt that he would even consider doing this to
her again, she twisted out of his arms and escaped to the sanctuary of the
kitchen, damned if she would let him see her frustrated tears...
...Later when his rationale had penetrated and calmed her some, she
came back to him. "You wouldn't be the man I love if you did any less.
But I'm just so damned scared. You're a wanted man...over there..." Her
eyes blinked rapidly, trying to keep the tears from spilling over.
"I'm a wanted man here, Maggie. Not that much differece." He reached
down and pulled her up from her crouched position, wrapping his arm around
her tenderly, saying nothing, figuring it was best for the moment...

* * *

Gathering together his rag-tag ensemble, Hannibal Smith plunges once again
into the jungles of Southeast Asia, this time bent on the rescue of
throwaway POW's, knowledge of whose existence was brought out by one of
their own who managed to escape the US military death squads out for his
head. The Team's mission takes them into Thailand, where Doctor Hue
rejoins his maverick American friends to aid them in their travels about
Cambodia, while laying ghosts of his own to rest. Dodging bandits, drug
warlords, Vietnamese and Khmer soldiers, the intrepid band must mount
increasing obstacles to even get near their objective, never mind carry it
out. And armed with the knowledge that the U.S. GOvernment may be their
biggest predator only serves to toughen their resolve to succeed at this
mission and finally bring the truth home. However, a devastating bit of
knowledge from Vietnam at the end of their trek will change their lives
irrevocably.
DEJA VU contemplated for late fall 1997 publishing date. Adult
situations and language, age statement over eighteen mandatory. For
information or to be pu on our mailing list, please send an SASE to:

Also, a few people seem interested finally in getting this other 'zine
started, so I'm reposting part of Rita's flyer for TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS:

'What were the reactions to the "trial" of the A-Team from all the people
they assisted over the years? Did any of them try to help in any way? At
least, try to find out what was happening? Make any grass roots efforts to
help, etc? It's an interesting premise and could show after-the-facts of
what happened to a lot of these people... ow the A-Team's assistance
changed their lives.

Well, this weird person is looking for such stories...more like vignettes,
reminiscences and the like. if enough interest is exhibited, could even do
an adult section; however, no "/" material is sought.

Stories should be 1-10 pages in length, typed (and if you have Word Perfect
or Microsoft Word, disks as well).'

If you're interested in this 'zine idea, contact Rita at the above given
address.

PLANS SCAMS AND VANS #4: ...is now officially full. We've already got 120+
pages of material, and I have to declare it closed if we're going to make
it for a mid-May publication date. However, that doesn't mean stop sending
your stories, it only means they will be used for PLANS SCAMS AND VANS #5
or one of our other proposed 'zines (see the listing on the Sockii Press
homepage at http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~pellegri/sockii.html. Most of these
themed-zines will be left open for sure until the end of this summer - if
not enough response to a given title is received by that time, what A-Team
stories have been submitted and accepted will be used instead for PLANS
SCAMS AND VANS.)

So, what that also means is it's time to ask for proofreaders. Let me know
if you'd like to help with proofing PSV#4 or some other stories for other
'zines. You will receive a discount towards the purchase of a 'zine by
proofreading.

I'd also like to thank those of you who have sent in your postcards and
shareware fees for PLANS SCAMS AND VANS #3. While we had some troubles
getting the electronic format set up at first, it seems to have been well
received as an inexpensive alternative to the printed format. And, since
people actually *have* been sending in fees (I knew A-Team fans in general
were honest types! :-), look for announcements soon about electronic
versions of some of our back issues becoming available as well.

ARTICLES AND TRANSCRIPTS:

Thanks to Gill Dunn who sent me some Star Trek related news clippings this
past week! Here's just one of them, related to Diwght's appearance in the
last Star Trek movie.

"Just a little cameo..." (Source of article unknown).

Lou Anders talks to actor Dwight Schultz about his appearance in "Star
Trek: First Contact."

Lieutenant Reginald Barclay, among the most popular of Star Trek's large
litany of recurring characters, makes a delightful cameo appearance in Star
Trek: First Contact. That cameo, however, owes its existance not to the
script, but to Director Jonathan Frakes. The script of ST:FC called for
Zefran Cochrane to be accosted by an over-zealous leiutenant who would
inappropriately shower the historical figure with embarassing compliments.
"It was Jonathan Frekes' idea to bring me into it," explains Schultz,
"because I was a lieutenant that everyone who had seen Star Trek: Tne Next
Generation was familiar with. Jonathan called me and said, "It's just a
little cameo. Would you do it? I said, 'Of course, I'd love to be in the
show. I'd give anything to be in it.' I love Jonathan. He's so much fun
to be with. I'm very appreciative that he brought me in."
Once Schultz's availability was confirmed, writers Braga and Moore
set about on a quick retouching to make the anonymous lieutenant more in
keeping with the angst-ridden Reginald Barclay. "They made it
Barclay-esque, more recognizable, as opposed to just a generic, 'Hello.
How are you? It's nice to meet you,' which was what the character was
originally." The results make the interaction between Cochrane and Barclay
a special moment for Star Trek fans. "It's like a groupie following a
famous actor around. He ambushes Jamie Cromwell and just goes on and on.
Those who are familiar with ST:TNG and Barclay will get a kick out of his
enthusiasm. It was only one day of shooting, but it was a blast.
"I almost didn't find the location!" laughs Schultz about his
single day of shooting. "I was sure I had missed the turn off somewhere.
We were shooting in the Angeles national Forest, up around 6,000 feet, and
I was confident that I was going to be able to get there, and I was
practically late. I almost missed it. I could have. I was going to go
down this other road, and I would probably have missed my call by about two
hours if I'd done it. I had to go back and find a phone and call my
manager to make sure that I was on the right track. Finally, I saw
somebody else who was lost and followed them to the set."
Schultz particularly enjoyed being able to share a scene with James
Cromwell. "His stock had just started to soar because of Babe, and I got
to meet him, and we had some lovely conversations. He's a really decent
and dear fellow."
In the ST:TNG episode "The Nth Degree", Barclay temporarily merged
with the USS Enterprise's computer. A similar fate may befall the actor as
well. "I just got a brand new whiz bang computer, and I'm net surfing for
the first time. This is unbelievably exciting to me. I am stunned by
what's in there. It's overwhelming. It almost makes you tremble. It's
encyclopedic information about the most minute topics. It's everything and
anything that you can imagine. I've been wanting to do this for a long
time, but I didn't have the money and the time. So I've been doing this
almost non-stop. I"ll be found in cyberspace somewhere. I may get lost in
there. I may never come out. I may enter somebody's computer someday, and
that's the only way I'll be seen again!"
These days, Schultz says he is recognized more for Barclay than
anything else. "Even more than The A-Team. Of course, I did 100 episodes
of that, but I was less recongizable. Barcaly is much closer to me. It
always amazed me that the character was popular at all. I'm floored by it
sometimes."
