  • Step 3 – Configuring the Playstation 2

Introduction

This tutorial will teach you how to network a Playstation 2 to a computer. This tutorial will not teach you how to exploit your Playstation 2. There are other tutorials specifically for this purpose. These Playstation 2 .ELF files have networking capabilities:

  • ExecFTPs 0.69
FTP server for PS2, allows you to directly upload new files to your memory cards or non-HDL hard drive partitions.

  • Faplink Server 0.87.1
This ELF is the PS2-side server application for using the Faplink PC Client. Faplink allows the upload of ISO images from PC to PS2 over network connection. Generally less stable than HDL_Dumb.

  • HDL_Dump Server 0.8.2
This is the PS2-side server for using the HDL_Dumb & HDL_Dump clients for PC. This tool allows the upload of ISO images from PC to PS2 over network connection. Very stable, although very slow.

  • PS2 Link Server 1.24
This is the PS2-side server for the "PS2Link" PC client. This software allows you to load ELF files and additional code directly to the PS2 hardware via network connection. Useful for coders and devs.

  • Reality Media Player 1.50b
This is the most full-featured media player for PS2 that was not commercially developed. Although lacking HDD and USB support, it plays files at a higher bitrate than the AR Max media player. Also support network streaming of movie and music files.

  • Pukklink Server 1.0
Similar in use and features to PS2Link, this is the PS2-side server.

  • Unofficial LaunchELF 3.41
Unofficial branch of the LaunchELF project featuring enhanced abilities such as built-in FTP support and reworked HDD access routines.

*Note- If you do not intend to use these .ELF files, then you do not need this tutorial!

Step 1 – Supplies

  • Exploited Playstation 2 Console (Not Slimline)
  • PS2 Official Network Adapter
  • A Windows XP Computer (sorry for people using other operating systems)
  • PS2 Memory Card with at least one of the .ELF files listed above
  • Original PSX Game(s) to trigger your Exploited Playstation 2 (Nearly Any)
  • *Networking Cables (Crossover) or Router/Hub/Switch with ethernet cables (Patch)
  • An FTP Client which can be downloaded below. FlashFXP is highly recommended. (Only if you wish to use ExecFTPs)

*Note – A Crossover cable does not require the use of a router/hub/switch. It allows the direct connection of your Computer to your PS2. To determine if your ethernet cable is a crossover, check the wiring to see if the colors are different on each end.

Step 2 – Configuring your PC

  • Start up your computer that you will configure.
  • Follow the pictures below for the proper path to the Control Panel.

  • Here is where you will configure your PC's IP Adress and Subnet Mask.
  • Fill in the numbers as shown but leave Default gateway, Preferred DNS server, and Alternate DNS Server blank!

*Note- These numbers are shown only as an example. It should work for most people as most PS2 .ELF files have a default IP of 192.168.0.10 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

You may type in any other numbers as you wish but must follow these guidelines:

An IP is composed of four octets. Octets are separated as follows:

  • 192 (1st Octet)
  • . 168 (2nd Octet)
  • . 0 (3rd Octet)
  • . 10 (4th Octet)

In order for your computer to communicate with the Playstation 2, the first three octets must be the same as well as the entire subnet mask . The 4th Octet cannot be the same value as the Playstation 2 .ELF file.

Step 3 – Configuring the Playstation 2

  • Connect the network cable(s) from your PC to your Playstation 2. A router/switch/hub will require the use of two patch ethernet cables. A direct connection will require the use of one crossover cable.
  • Transfer any network configuration files over to your Playstation 2 so the .ELF file(s) you chose will recognize your PC. (Be sure to read the note above about doing this) If you have trouble creating the network configuration , be sure to read the appropriate .ELF file documentation. (Ex. Readme.txt) If you have trouble transfering files to your Playstation 2 , you may find other tutorials on Exploitstation designed for that purpose.
  • Power on the PS2 and launch the .ELF file you wish to use with your newly created network. If you have trouble using your .ELF file(s) with your network , be sure to read the apppropriate .ELF file documentation.
