:: i s s u e { x 0 A }::

welcome to issue x00A of NULL magazine!!! as you allready noticed, again,
things have changed! actually, the whole world has changed, so NULL had
to adapt.

as the world is in turbulence with the whole covid19 stuff, the economy,
in a free fall and possible war zones, like the Aegean, the Middle East,
the China/Japan conflict, the China/USA conflict, the Syria conflict,
the Libya conflict etc. are warming up... so do i, i had to adjust.

bad economy, means more work-hours, less money, less free time, more
stress. so bbsing and null mag, right now are a luxury for me and i
think, not only me (i mean bbsing in general).

does this mean that null will stop... hmmm... not sure. it all depends,
on how things will develop. if i have the time and appetite to continue
writing, then it will be ok. for sure, there will be less releases in a
year and probably less material to publish in it.

as i saw the last months, the whole bbs scene is a bit "silent". the
traffic in echonets has dropped in a very obvious way and also releases
from ansi groups are more rare. even mistigris had to postpone a bit,
their monthly release. if you check 16colo.rs, you will see that in 2019,
there were 33+ releases of packages and until now in 2020, we have only
16. i don't think that in the next 4 months we can catch this number. for
sure it's not a matter of quantity, as now days the quality is much
better, but still these numbers, show very clear, that something has
changed this year.

so... anyway... fuck all this... i hope you are all good and lets cut to
the chase... NULL!!!!

NULL is going to be even simpler. no more menus and lightbar stuff, not
many ansi, if even any, not much of tracks. the lack of time, to build
an issue, is obviously affecting the mag, so i have to keep things,
simple. so, i chose the "one-continues-text-file" style, which other
mags, in the past, had also. personally... i don't like it too much,
but it's better, than not having nothing at all.

i bet, that until next issue, i will have changed my mind, again... :P

you can use keys 0..9 and a..z to browse to its article/tutor, press
alt-e to extract the text, press alt-f to find text and more. press the
? key to see the complete list for key shortcuts. i hope it's easy to
use. i also decided to make a .pdf version. with the new "all in one"
style, a pdf is easy to make and i think that many of you, you will
prefer it, even if it's not so "original" or retro, like the dos
version.

all tutorials and many of the articles from all NULL issues up to this
one, are also online in the Another Droid website and gopher site. the
address is:

http://andr01d.zapto.org:8080
gopher://andr10d.zapto.org:7070

happy reading... :)

bbs // xqtr

in youtube you can find all sorts of videos, even for bbsing. not
much, but they do exist. so in this article lets see some bbs
dedicated youtubers, that you probably know, but there is a slight
chance you don't.

the list contains youtubers i know... perhaps i have missed some or
they don't upload very often bbs video content. so you will not see
youtubers that posted once a bbs video and never again. if you know
more of them, send me an email and i will include them in a future
update of this article.

lets begin...

Mystic Guy
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPOUHszVXaGNSlK3AdI7kLQ

mystic guy is more of a mystic bbs dedicated youtube channel. the
content is 100% mystic bbs related and it has very useful stuff
about setting up and customizing a mystic bbs. unfortunately it's
been a long time since the last video uploaded, so some of the
information is getting a bit outdated. certainly it deserves to
watch it and subscribe, if you are a bbs enthusiast.

----- oOo -----

ArakNet TV
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2zXScxdbsRRhfgjchxP75g

this is the official youtube channel of ArakNet/Phenom net/group.
it's a bbs/ansi/ascii scene related channel with various content
that is worth subscribing. it started very strong, but as you will
see the last months there is not much content uploaded. hope to see
more stuff from this channel.

----- oOo -----

Synchronet BBS Software
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsQ8iXU5yvrybyoEgo__97A

this is a dedicated synchronet bbs channel and you will find all
sorts of information about the synchronet bbs software. it's rather
a new channel and there is not much content (up to now 06/2020) but
the videos are new (not older than a year) and it deserves to be
visited, specially from synchronet bbs owners.

----- oOo -----

Bryan Lunduke
https://www.youtube.com/user/BryanLunduke

not an only bbs channel, but he often releases videos that are
about bbses, door games, bbs/terminal software and more. so you
will have to search through his videos to find the ones related to
bbs only.

----- oOo -----

epimundo
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkNNHaK4kKsj3TsqqYlNuAw

epimundo is a spanish channel more about the ascii/ansi scene than
the bbs scene, but still worth watching. because it's in spanish
you have to use captions to understand the language :(

----- oOo -----

SOME KIND OF B.B.S. REVIEW TYPE THING
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVzhw8__cyDQHcQ7dHAFRnQ

now this is a very awkward bbs related youtube channel :) but don't
let this make you not to visit it, you should definitely watch all
of his videos. even if the guy is a prick, some times he has a
point on what he says. i hope this channel wasn't just a lockdown
thing, that more videos will come.
so these are some of my selections... do you have more? note me
about them. over and out...

cyberpunk // xqtr

cyberdecks is something that came to reality totaly from scifi
books. if you have read one of william gibsons scifi novels you
should be familiar with the term.

so people who like this kind of stuff, thought that cyberdecks,
have also a place in our desks/lap, except from a place in our
hearts and imagination. if you search the internet and more
specific the hackaday site, you will find many builds. people also
created dedicated forum/sites for showing off their cyberdeck
builds.

before looking into some of them, lets say some things that a true
cyberdeck must have. first of all is the "looks". a cyberdeck, is
not another form of a laptop or tablet. it's different, but also
the same in a weird way. cyberdecks can be portable, but not always
as portable as a laptop/tablet. you may need or have a place to put
it temporarily to use it. it has a small but fully functional
keyboard, a screen and connectivity to the "air-waves". this can be
the internet, bluetooth devices or even use rtl-sdr devices to
listen the various frequencies.

the more cyberpunk look, your deck has, the better/cooler it is. a
cyberdeck is all about "coolness" and "awesomeness", re-living the
stories of gibsons heroes and becoming a "hacker", without even
hacking ;)

there are many ways to make a cyberdeck but the most usual is to
use a mini-computer like RPis, Beaglebone, NUC etc. and as many
antennas you can add to it :)

enough with the talking... lets see some very nice builds. who
knows, you may decide to build one for yourself. i can't imagine a
better way to login to bbses, than with a cyberdeck!!!

something that perhaps many of us (bbs enthusiasts) are forgetting
is the cd.textfiles.com website. you may have hear it but didn't
visit it or didn't understand the "wealth" of old software is
containing.

this site is a collection of old cdroms, that either were included
in well known computer magazines or distributed/sold as separate
media, that someone could find or buy. these cds are containing old
shareware games, utilities, apps, mods, even music (tracks), that
today (2020) you can't find easy.

you could visit a bunch of bbses, search through hundreds of
categories and lists on them and still couldn't find what you were
looking for. these cds because are "themed", each one is containing
specific type of software, that is easy to search and find. for
example there is a whole cd that contains PPEs, how cool and easy
is that? you can get the cd and have hundreds PPEs to use on your
bbs in just a click of your mouse.

other cds have old utilities and apps, that are needed if you want
for example to build an new/old pc, with windows 95/98 or even
3.1[1]. no need to search the whole internet. with just one of
these cds you can have the software you need.

the other cool thing, is that you can rip them off and upload the
files to your bbs. this way you can make your bbs to be "reach" in
content, like utils, apps, tracks and at the same time, is like
preserving/archiving these cds and utils/apps ;)

so if you are looking for some bbs software or even drivers for
your win95 pc, don't forget to take a look at the cd.textfiles.com
site.

so... many of us, today, are using android/iphone devices to
connect to a bbs. it's just the way it is, now days and is
understandable. i also like joining bbses with my android phone,
using connectbot.

the thing is, that there is not a single one application (for
smartphones), that is made to be used to browse/connect to a bbs
the "right" way. connectbot is the closest one to give a full bbs
experience, but still it lacks some main features like zmodem or
that the screen is too small and there is no way to use it in
landscape mode for better viewing, while using the soft-keyboard of
the phone.

i would really love to see a custom made application, that would be
android-native and give all features like a "normal" telnet/bbs
app, like syncterm or netrunner.

sure, you could use termux and install a linux cli app, like qodem,
but this is like cheating :) and you still don't have the best
results.

as you understand, we are stucked with connectbot :) and this is
another thing i want to mention. because we are forced to use such
applications, that are not 100% bbs intended, we have to adjust our
bbses, scripts, mods etc. to be more smartphone friendly. this can
be "translated" as to have a more clear theme, with not too many
colors and details, menus with less entries and not just a menu
screen with 30+ entries, give the user the ability to use "simple"
keystrokes, like letters and not cursor keys, pgdn, pgup or even
escape. a bbs that uses only lightbars as a way to select menu
entries is not smartphone friendly and should be avoided.

also it would be great if all bbses offer http or ftp as a way to
download files from it, as zmodem is not supported in connectbot or
similar apps. this is a way to overcome this problem.

what else do you think it should be supported or avoided, for a bbs
to be more smartphone friendly? do you think bbses should be
smartphone friendly? leave a comment below... :p

if you like NULL, you should definitely check other, older, disk
mags. after all there are part of the scene and the history of
computing, like BBSes are.

below are some picks of mine. mostly on textmode as i didn't like
disk mags based on vga graphics or windows... bleahhh... :( why did
they make those?

anyway, the mags below are not the greatest ones, for sure. i
thought you all ready know the "best" ones, so i chose some lesser
known. enjoy...

--- Defacto ---

Publisher: IPggi, Captain Power, NetRunner, Entropy and many others.

Interface: Defacto is not a typical ansi magazine although it operates in
the text mode. Very special is the small C64 emulator with which each
issue begins.

Contents: Interviews, hardware, news, tests and reports on games, Internet
tips, reports on warez and similar things.

https://files.scene.org/browse/mags/defacto/

--- DOODLE ---

Publisher: Grind King and Erratic.

Interface: The magazine operates completely in the text mode. Gentle
scrolling makes a pleasant reading but there is unfortunately no music.

Contents: Ansi Reviews and charts, humor and satire, but also serious
programming.

https://files.scene.org/browse/mags/doodle/

--- HUGI ---

Publisher: Adok

Interface: Many different interfaces from simple QBasic to the current
fast and graphically very responding text viewer with pictures and links
to the Internet. Some issues are also available as a HTML edition.

Contents: The Hugi grows up from the style of a school newspaper to one
of the most successful scene magazines. He treats parties, demos,
diskmags, programming, magazine fragments, reports, politics and

literature.

http://www.scene.org/dir.php?dir=/mags/hugi/

--- Reality Check ---

Publisher: Hitex, Rebel Chicken and others.

Interface: There are some graphics and intros and the magazine operates
in the text mode, which is really worth seeing owing to scrolling, music
and nice effects.

Contents: RCN is a "warez e-mag". So there are interviews, reviews and
stories about warez, BBS and FTP.
http://www.scene.org/dir.php?dir=/mags/reality_check_network/

--- Wave ---

Publisher: RaVe, chung Lee, BlackMagic and others.

Interface: Except for a title graphic the magazine operates in the text
mode. It is livened up by ansi diagrams and good music. The last two
issues are presented in a HTML like Windows program.
Contents: General articles, literature, interviews and some ansi
graphics.

https://files.scene.org/browse/mags/wave/

--- woezine ---

Publisher: Pogue, D3m0n, Dreadnought, Elmer Fudd and many others.

Interface: The well arranged and nicely animated interface operates as
a typical ansi magazine does in the text mode.

Contents: Ansi, music, mailboxes and the remaining scene.

https://files.scene.org/browse/mags/woezine/

opinion // xqtr

the last years, as i watch the bbs scene, i noticed something like
a "fashion", which has two sides. the one side is, making irc
clients, that run from a bbs, or a bbs client/server thing for
chatting, like MRC. the other side of things, has to do with
bridging irc channels, that are related to bbs stuff, with other
platforms like discord.

making a bbs client to join irc, ok i have to admit, that it has
its "magic", because of the text-mode and stuff and because you add
another feature to your bbs, but... i don't think that joining irc
via a bbs, has anything to do with bbsing. joining an irc server,
is only possible today, because we can't use dialup connections and
our bbses are 24/7 online. if it wasn't for that, it couldn't be
possible to join an irc server. so, i think that this "feature"
doesn't belong to the bbs scene. and i don't mean that we have to
forget it and never use it, but mostly, that it's not something
important and we must not give to much importance to that.

all bbs software has the feature for users to chat "locally" in the
bbs and that's enough. also it's "irc", before irc. back then, we
used bbses to chat and the feeling is the same, specially today, as
if you want to chat, instead of joining an irc channel, you can
just join a bbs and chat there. what's important is not how you
will join, but who you will find online to chat with and i think
that's the main reason, why all this happens.

because the scene is fragmented and everyone has a bbs, there is no
"common ground" for users (?) to join and fill the bbses with
people to chat with each other. so instead of many people joining
one bbs to chat, we ended to do the opposite and from many bbses
join a "common ground", like irc, where we will find people, with
the same interests to chat with.

the same principal went one step further, with the social media
fashion like discord and facebook. because everyone is using
different medias, (i talk always for the bbs scene) and people get
scattered, we chose to bridge all these platforms between them. so
you join a discord server and what you type in a specific channel,
is also typed in an irc channel and vice versa. this is cool in a
way and for sure, brings more people together from the scene, but
it has its drawbacks... and i speak for my self. perhaps some of
you, you will find all this, just weird.

when i join an irc channel, i think and have the idea, that
everything i type, it stays there and only those who have joined
the channel, can read it. but with all the "bridges" out there,
honestly, you don't know where and who's reading it. and the wors
part, is that if you join that bridged server ex. discord, because
the text you typed in irc, has been copied via a bot, in that
channel, you don't have the permissions to erase it, which would be
possible, if you had joined the discord server, from the beginning
and typed the text in there.

also platforms like discord, never erase messages. when i join an
irc channel, i type some shit, spend my time saying anything i want
and that's it. in "plain" irc, what i typed has gone forever and
only those who were joined read it. but when that irc channel is
bridged to another platform, the text stays there... someone can
read it, days, weeks, months after and make a comment for that,
without even knowing and without having the chance to answer/reply
and even worse, someone could reply to that msg, thinking that he
may get a answer, but the messages written in irc, even by the same
bot, cannot be saved or been sent to the user that are addressed
for, if he is not online.

anyway, i think you get the point and even if you don't agree with
me or think whatever you think, i had to address this matter, as
anonymity and keeping things straight in a scene, is something that
matters, specially these days.

...and last, but not least... the DOOR games archive!!!! which was the
thing that brought me in this BBS at the first place. as you can see the
sysop has done a lot of work to build this list/archive.

you can see what the game is capable of, in a glance, read the .diz file,
read the manul and also see an ansi image of the game. of course you can
download the game. great job! i hope the sysop would like to share this
library to others too, to keep it "alive" in the scene.

a raspberry pi distro for dos // xqtr

holly fucks! a dos based distro for raspberry pi. so simple (as an
idea) and yet no one had done it, until now. behold... DOSbian!
it's simple. you get a raspbian image and customize it, to launch
dosbox after finished booting.

but dosbian, is more. the author wasn't lame to just add and run a
dosbox instance. he added and compiled a custom version of dosbox
and made many changes in the config files, to have a complete ready
DOS machine, in your hands. but it's not only that. as it's written
in the official web page of dosbian at:

https://cmaiolino.wordpress.com/dosbian/

with dosbian you can do more:

-- Run all retro Pc Sofware (DOS / Win 3.1 / Win 95 / Win98)
-- Run most of 90s retro games
-- Run games from LaunchBox frontend
-- Networking operations and bridging with real LAN
-- Create empty floppy of size: 320KB, 720KB, 1,44MB
-- Create empty HDDs of size: 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB
-- Mount Floppy disk, CD-ROM or HDD using a GUI driven utility
-- Keep Dosbian system file updated

it's a clever idea for those that want to have a dedicated DOS
machine, in a modern setup like a raspberry pi. the whole solution
is simple as "
plug'n'play".

the only thing now... is where to find a usb floppy drive :)

mystic // xqtr

for those that who don't know, in linux machines, you can run any
(almost) script or even application, via your bbs and be displayed
on the remote user. this is something that you can't do in a
windows machine and this makes almost any cli (command line)
script/app, something like a DOOR app for your bbs.

for sure, it's not a bullet-proof feature and many problems can be
appear, specially with the encoding of the text. for example your
bbs may use cp437, but the script/app needs utf8. also ncurses is
known to cause problems in bbses. but how we can execute, lets say
a bash script into our bbs and use it? lets see...

first of all, you need to add a command to one of your menus to
execute the script. for this you will go to your mystic
configuration editor, edit the menu you want and add a menu entry.
into the Action List area you will insert a command and edit it to
something like this:

Command | (DD) Execute external program
Data | su - pi -c "
<full_filename>"

so, the command has to be DD to execute an external program/script.
the script must be executable (chmod +x <script>). now pay
attention to this! because mystic runs on root privileges, it seems
that when executing an external app, it doesn't drop down those
privs and executes the app/script as root! this is a no-no for us.
so we have to be sure to execute the script with privileges of a
normal user. that's why i am using su to change the user to the
user named "
pi", for use in a raspberry pi system. change the name
to your name of the user you want to use, as long he is not a root.

then we use the -c parameter to execute the script/app, so we have
to input the full path and filename of the script. when you execute
this command from your menu, inside the bbs, it will ask you to
enter the password for the user you are using (of the
machine/system, not the bbs). i know that this is annoying but it
can be bypassed. it's up to you to select if you want to do that or
not, so i am not mentioning ways to do so.

now test if all settings are ok and the script executes fine from
inside the bbs. you may see various problems with the most common,
not displaying some characters or displaying more characters that
it should be. this is a codepage problem and you should see it more
often if your bbs uses the cp437 codepage. solving this problem is
not always possible. some ways to do so are these:

][ the cp437 app. ][

this is a small c written utility that executes a utf8 app/script
and translates its output to cp437. you can find it here:

https://github.com/keaston/cp437

clone the repo and type make inside the directory you downloaded
the app. now to use the utility, just execute it, by adding the
script/app you want to use as the parameter. for example:

cp437 BitchX irc.efnet.org

][ the do it your self way ][

if the above fails and you have the source code of the script/app,
then you can manually find and change the utf8 characters to other
ascii or cp437 compatible ones. sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's
not. but i think that this is the best way to use, cause you are
sure about the result.

always make sure to have backups of the script/app you are
editing!!!

other problems have to do with the terminal emulation. depending on
how you execute the script/app, it may not find in what type of
terminal is in or can't get the size of it etc. in this case, it
would be best to create another bash script, that inside it, you
will add some commands to specify parameters for the terminal and
then execute the script/app you want.

for example, i wanted to run the script BashTop, from within my
bbs. when i executed the script, it couldn't find the size or
display any colors. so i made this script:

#!/bin/bash
export TERM=xterm # terminal type
stty cols 80 rows 24 # size
cd <bashtop_dir>
./bashtop

with this little script you give the information needed to bashtop
to execute it self, otherwise it wont run.

these are the most common errors you will get, when you try to
execute a script/app inside your bbs. for sure there are more,
depending the script/app. don't be disappointed if a script don't
run well with the first try. give it a little thought and you will
find a way.

after a break down of my bbs, which is hosted in a rpi3, i thought
to make this text, that contains basic and most used stuff to setup
a bbs in a rpi.

it's basic stuff, that you will need to get the system ready and up
running. because i use mystic bbs, i added also some packages for
mystic, like the ssh support and the spell checker.

[] Write Image

sudo dd bs=4M if=2019-09-26-raspbian-buster-lite.img of=/dev/sdb \

[] Enable SSH

For headless setup, SSH can be enabled by placing a file named ssh,
without any extension, onto the boot partition of the SD card from
another computer. When the Pi boots, it looks for the ssh file. If it
is found, SSH is enabled and the file is deleted. The content of the
file does not matter; it could contain text, or nothing at all.

If you have loaded Raspbian onto a blank SD card, you will have two
partitions. The first one, which is the smaller one, is the boot
partition. Place the file into this one.

cracking // xqtr

in the previous issue i have posted some links about dosbox hacking
and cracking. this time lets see an easier way to cheat games with
the good old Game Wizard 32!!!

Game Wizard is one of the best cheating utilities for DOS and the
good thing is that it works even under dosbox! with some minor
issues, but it works!

first grub a copy of it. the version you will find is v3.0 or
v3.0A. depending your system and dosbox version, perhaps one of
them may not work and the other will do. in my case 3.0A didn't
work, but 3.0 works just fine.

you will find 3.0 here:
https://vetusware.com/download/Game%20Wizard%2032%20Pro%203.0/?id=4441

if you didn't know about this site, now you do, so register...
cause it has many DOS goodies :)

after downloading the .zip file, unzip it in a directory and run
dosbox. mount this directory as a drive with the command:

mount a /home/user/gwiz

replace /home/user/gwiz with your directory. from inside dosbox go
to drive A: with the command:

...you know the command... if you don't close this tutorial right
now... game cheating isn't for newbies :p

so change to drive a: and execute the install file. install game
wizard to an easy directory, for easy access. you will also have to
add this path to the PATH variable. the default dir c:/gwiz is just
fine.

the installation is instant! close it and now edit your dosbox
config file. in linux it usually is in your home directory under
the directory .dosbox.

edit the file dosbox-<ver>.conf <-- depending your dosbox version
and find the stanza [dos]. there change the value of ems to false.
change this: ems=true to ems=false

at the [autoexec] stanza, insert the game wizard path directory to
your path enviroment variable. it should look something like:

PATH c:;c:\gw;

save the config file and rerun dosbox. if you type gw at any
directory you are in, game wizard will launch and you are ready to
cheat (almost) any DOS game. :)

phonebook to csv xqtr

in case you want to extract your bbs list from netrunner, you can
use this python3 script to do so. it will read the main phonebook
file and export it to a csv file on the screen. from this point you
can convert the csv file to other formats or keep it as a backup.

i wanted a backup of my phone book, for easy access in my android
phone, using connect bot, so i made this script. i hope it will be
helpful for others too.

it is also a good tutor to learn how to process netrunner or mystic
files via python3. don't forget mystic and netrunner are written in
pascal which uses a strange way to save strings in binary files. so
a string with length of 20 chars, in the binary file will occupy 21
bytes and not 20... always remember that.

mystic bbs // xqtr

the following script is responsible to check if the mis daemon is
running on the system and if not, execute it. it also keeps a log,
for the sysop to check when did that happen and know that something
went wrong and mis was shutdown.

the script is executed by cron every 5/10/20 mins (you choose).
this way if mis shuts down, the bbs will be off line just for a few
minutes and it will be back online in very little time.

i also added a feature, to make the script be "
inactive" and not
run mis, in case you want to upgrade the system files. this way you
don't have to remove the cron job that executes the file, every
time you want to upgrade the bbs.

you create an empty file, named "
enable_bbs.flag". if this file is
present the script will do its job as it supposed to. if the file
is not present then even if mis is shutdown, the script will not
re-launch it. so make sure that after upgrading the mystic bbs
files, to re-create this flag file.

with this bash script we are gonna display a different ansi file
every time a user logs off. you can use the idea in different ways,
like showing different ansis in login or when navigating from a
menu to another one etc.

so we have a directory that will contain all of our ansi images we
want to choose from. the script will pick one randomly, add some
mystic pipe codes to display the ansi a bit slower and without a
pause, you can also add a clear screen code, but is up to you.

so the steps are easy...

choose a file randomly...
PIC=$(find $DIR -type f -iname "
*.ans" | shuf -n1)

copy it in a temp file...
cp "
$PIC" "$tmp"tmp.ans

create a new file and insert the pipe codes in the beginning...
echo "
|DI80|PO" > "$text"logoff.ans

add the ansi image to that file...
cat "
$tmp"tmp.ans >> "$text"logoff.ans

delete the temp file
rm "
$tmp"tmp.ans

you can execute this script every time a user visits your bbs, so
when he will log off, he will see another ansi image, each time. ;)

terminall // xqtr

as most of us, my favorite retro machine is an amstrad cpc 6128, cause
it was my first ever computer. so games and music from that machine bring
memories. but it's not only that. the sound chip used to this machine, was
also the one used in the zx spectrum and atari st. so, by it self this
chip and format .YM has its own history. but enough with the blah-blah.
lets see how we can play YM files in our linux machine and some more.

the easiest and more native way is to get a program called STymulator.
it's part of the open cubic project and we can find it at:

https://stian.cubic.org/project-stymulator.php

get it from the official github page, enter the project directory and
type:

configure
make
sudo make install

if your system has all the appropriate packages to compile c programs you
should have the ymplayer and ym2wav utilities in your /usr/bin directory.
now you are able to play those wonderful YM tracks! but wait... go here:

https://bulba.untergrund.net/music_e.htm

...find some music and download it. but we have to admit, using the
command line to play one by one the files, is not the easiest way. so we
are gonna use Midnight Commander! install it, open it and press F9.
select the Command > Edit Extension File menu and you should have opened
the extension configuration file in your preffered text editor.

first find the stanza for LHA files. because YM files are in real a LHA
file, that contains the track music, MC will browse into that file,
instead of playing the music. so find the lines:

# lha
# type/^LHa\ .*archive
# Open=%cd %p/ulha://
# View=%view{ascii} /usr/lib/mc/ext.d/archive.sh view lha

and put a hash symbol in front. this way MC will ignore the LHA type. now
make a search and find the string "
### Sound files ### " and after that
insert these lines:

regex/i/\.(ym|YM)$
Open=/usr/lib/mc/ext.d/sound.sh open ym

not finished yet... edit the above file /usr/lib/mc/ext.d/sound.sh and
under the case "
${filetype}" in statement add these lines:

ym)
ymplayer "
${MC_EXT_FILENAME}"
;;

save both files, restart MC and you should be fine. navigate to the dir
containing the YM files and press ENTER on them. MC should launch ymplayer
in a different terminal window and you should hear heavenly 8bit music!!!

make sure to listen these tracks, all from amstrad games:

robocop // barbarian // tetris // arkanoid // boulder dash // cybernoid
golden axe // gryzor // commando // renegade // solomons key // batman
and many more...

and here is a module to test in case you want to search for one. it's in
base64 format. the first one who sends me the title and author of the
track, will get access to a hidden area of Another Droid BBS. nothing
big or weird, so don't expect an area with tons of files or some
secret shit.

There is a hidden section at the end of the demo-disk. You probably can't see it because the text is written in black on a black background (see screenshoot) but the following text can be read clearly in the .DAT file:
