Content ripping guide!
(ASCII art by Ascii Art Generator)

Hello everybody! Thank you for coming to read this walkthrough and I hope I can explain it all clear enough so you will be able to do it too.

Note: All links except my tutorial images were removed in the gamefaqs edition of the guide due to its link policy.

Version 1,10

Added: Email address, bit more info on .pf files, fixed 2 typing mistakes (about these, my keyboard had fallen to the ground from my desk once and the whole space key was split from the rest of the keyboard, -_-, I managed to put it back in it's slot again but sometimes when I press it, nothing happens, sometimes I don't realise it so if you read something like "thendo this:", give me a message, alright?)

Version 1,11

Added: Author's Input
Removed: E-mail address, sorry but I changed my address because of massive spam and I'm not in the mood to do so again.

Version 1,12

This guide can now be found at ign.com under my account.

System Requirements

Below are the requirements:

A driver (well this is quite obvious) that reads DVDs.

Some free space on your HDD (some Gigabytes...).

Microsoft Windows as your in-use operating system at the time you're doing this. Other OS users I'm really sorry but I don't know if there's a way to do it in your OS, Linux users may be able to use Wine though...I have no idea how things work because I only have experience in Windows so I don't know how Wine works but if it can convert an application written with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 (90% sure) then you might have a chance. That applies to any other OS too, if there is a way to get windows programs to work with their OS nature.

Note: From now on I'll refer to the readers as windows OS users.
Please don't send me mails asking me to tell you how to do it in your OS because I simply DON'T KNOW!

Ability to support WinAMP and plugins for it in your PC.

Official FAQ:
Link removed

The in_cube plugin for WinAMP (you can use others but I recommend this one, if for any reason you don't like it or have a problem with it just search for plugins that enable WinAMP to play .adx files)

Note: This is needed only if do it the WinAMP way, it doesn't work for me though...

Exploring the Game DVD

SO, let's start. After you've done your preparations with the software needed put your game disc in.

Note: This walkthrough is based on the PAL version of the game disc.
Do not ask me what to do if something is wrong/different in the Japaneze or American (no I don't mean the country but the continent) versions because I DON'T KNOW!

Here we'll do some recon, know what files exist and what we'll work with.

When you go to your drive to see the content of the game the first folder you get is the game's main folder. Here there are a couple of things and our most used location, basically, everything you want is here. Let's see the files now.

Files

 0_SOUND.AFS

Music files in here.

 0_TEXT.AFS

Umm I don't really know because all I've found in here were .opd and .bin files and I can't open any of these two. I can't open .opd because the only programs I found on the net to open them were Durango and Omnipage, both of which wanted weren't available for download as an anonymous user...you're certainly welcome to try though...

 E_SOUND.AFS

More sound files...MUCH MORE.

 E_TEXT.AFS

Contains some .bin and .txs files which can't be opened.

 NTGUI2EU.ELF

ELF files are...well think of them as PS2 .exes. This probably contains images or something for the GUI (Graphical User Interface). The EU part of the name may be changed to NTSC in NTSC versions, this is just a guess though...

 OVER.AFS

Contains .ovl (overlay) files, don't mess with this.

 PES_NTSC.PSS

PSS files are ps2 videos, use PSSPlex to decode them.

 PES_PAL.PSS

Same as above, this one seems to be in PAL (Europe) mode.

 ROMLIST.DIR

Nothing you should pay any attention too (I bet you're going to open it just 'cause I said that, heh).

 S_SOUND.AFS

Keepin' 'em comin'!

 S_TEXT.AFS

More and more illegible files.

 SLES 549.13

I'm sure you remember seeing something like this. You're right. This number is written on your disc and the game case (on the sides). Basically this number has something to do with NTSC and PAL versions so having a different number is logical if your disc isn't the PAL version.

SYSTEM(.CNF but the extension's not viewable)

Treat this like it doesn't exist.

That's it with this folder, now go to subfolder NTCNFBIN.

 NTCNFBIN

Files

 AUDIO.IRX

.irx files can't be opened. They're modified .elf files. I don't know anything else because I never have or will create a PS2 game.

 BG.RGB

This could be an image but neither Irfanview nor Quicktime Picture Viewer could open it. The name implies that it could be the backgrounds (GUI, fans etc...).

 BG_PAL.RGB

Look above, PAL edition.

 EUROPEAN.PF

I'm proud to announce that I have no idea what this is.

 ICON.SYS

99% the save file icon.

 JAPANESE.PF

Same as EUROPEAN.PF, although this one's in Jap.

 JIS2UCS.BIN

.bins can't be opened.

 SOUND.BIN

Same as above.

 SYS_NET.ICO

Probably your "avatar" in online play? I can't know since I don't have net play.

 UCS2JIS.BIN

The opposite of JIS2UCS.BIN. I think JIS is what people call Romanised Japanese (or something). That is when you write Japanese words using the Roman Alphabet, which pretty much means English since lots of languages, English included, use the Roman alphabet. Don't know if it has anything to do with it though...and quite sadly there's no way to know...

Now, I realise there is the IOP folder too but that folder is useless to us since all it has are .irx files and an .img file. This folder contains modules for the game and such folders are found in every game, don't get click-happy.

Starting to rip stuff -Movies-

Note: Like PSSPlayer there are other programs that open and watch .pss files, to be precise, PSSPlex doesn't make you watch that video actually, it just extracts their video and audio streams (.m2v and .wav respectivelly) and that's why we're using it. The goal of this walkthrough is to rip game stuff so go on ahead, open PSSPlex and click Demultiplex. Click Open and find your file, it will be located in a drive other than C:\ or any hard drives or usb connected devices you have (unless you pasted it there). If you only have one driver then it should probably be in D:\ but someone that has access to the PC (including you) might have changed the letter (very easily, but this isn't a Windows FAQ, don't email me asking how, search the net, I'm sure you'll find it). Other drives just continue the alphabet (E:\, F:\ and so on...keep in mind that that's their default letter). If your PC opens your discs automatically and you don't know what letter it is because you didn't care just eject the disc, close the drive, then open it again after a few seconds and put the disc in again and look at the windows bar on top (and close it of course).

Open up PSSPlex (Image 1).
Find your PES_NTSC and PES_PAL .pss files.
Open any of the two or both of them (Image 2) but they're the same thing so keep the one that plays better on your pc. Click Start and PSSPlex will get to work (Image 3).
It shouldn't take more than a few seconds (ten, maybe more for slower systems), it also depends on your drive's DVD reading and writing speed (4x, 8x, 16x etc...). If you don't know your drive's speed search it's product name on the net and most likely you'll find information from online stores.
Done? Good, make sure you save the .wav and .m2v files in the same folder. I'll leave that now, we'll talk about what to do with the ripped files later, after we finish ripping everything we want. By the way if you're wondering what movie it is, well it should be kinda obvious, the intro movie which is really, really strange...
but who am I to judge?

Ripping stuff -OST- (Soundtrack)

Next up is what you probablly care most about, the OST (Original Soundtrack).

Fire up AFSExplorer (Image 1) and open 0_SOUND.afs (Image 2).
Wait a moment the bigger the file and the more programs running means it'll load slower and slower.
Soon enough an image will tell you there's a problem (Image 3), click yes.
Next up save the .afs file somewhere as prompted (image 4).
Once the rebuilding proccess (Image 5) is complete you'll see loads of .adx files (Image 6). To play these just right-click and select Open with --> Sound Player
You can now play these fles right away (Image 6).
If you have storage space problems or prefer to hear them this way then you can just do the same with all the other sound .afs files and play them that way. You can open AFSExplorer's sound player by the menu too, whatever you want.

File Management

Movies

Here is what to do with the files you get. First, the .wav and .m2v you got from the .pss file(s). To play the movie, I used MPCStar Player although any player that supports .m2v files should work (WinAMP works too). Again, make sure the .wav and the .m2v are in the same folder. Use any video editing or whatever program to combine these two files but they play just fine like this for me, so I've never tried anything which means this is all I can tell you about the movies.

OST

Extract the .adx files from the SOUND .afs files. Now install any WinAMP plugin that enables you to play .adx files (copy the plugin files in WinAMP's plugin folder). Then just open them with WinAmp to listen to them. Next step is converting them to .wav files which are readable by every media player. One way is to open them with WinAMP and use it's own conversion engine but that never works for me so we'll have to use a DOS program, you may have noticed this already but adx2wav has no GUI, when you open a black window appears and diassapears immedently.

Note: I don't know if other-than-MS Windows-OS users can continue since this has to do with DOS commands, once again, I'm clueless about other OSes.

Click Start, then Run... and write cmd prompt (Image 1).
Now look at the location opened by default, mine is my Docs and Settings user folder (Image 2).
For the easiest use copy and paste the adx2wavmod3.exe in that folder.
Now write the program's name and the name of the file you want.
So get both of the files (adx2wav and the .adx in question) in the folder, and write adx2wavmod3 <file name> (Image 3).
It should spawn a .wav file and you're done (Image 4).

Do the same with all sound .afs archives on the disk and their .adxs inside. Then do the same thing over and over again. Mass conversion is available (Image 4), too. Have fun!

Encyclopaedia

Want to know more about those extensions? You came to the right place.
I am not wikipedia though...I could be mistaken about something or there may be more to something than what I've said...that's where you come in.

.adx
What I know is that this is the format of the songs in many games and that is all that matters.

.afs
Archives used in many games to store things

.bin
Bins are either disc images or archived folders and files. For the curious, being an image is good news because then it can be opened but if it's an archive you can forget that. Archives in .bin format are tricky, there's no way to make an universal .bin extractor because file structures across .bins change. I'm not sure because I haven't tried (nor will I because I'm not interested) but some of the .bins might be proccesed with Jaeder Naub.

Link removed

.dir
Some kind of linking or index file, this matters only to programmers.

.elf/.irx
The PS2 executables, I need not say anything else. You can get some info on .elf files with ElfView. You can find it and other tools for consoles and console games here:

Link removed

Elfview is a DOS program so it works just like adx2wav.

.ico/icon.sys
Most times they are the save file icons or other icons in the game.

.img
Image and "image" file. "Image" as to disc image files and image as to a picture file. None of .imgs I found in PS2 games ever work as the are supposed to...

.pf
No idea what this does, really. Although for some reason .pf files were associated with Windows Media Player...nothing happened though...
They are also Windows prefetch files, prefetch is a folder located under WINDOWS\Prefetch (Windows XP Home Edition SP2, I don't know if it is changed in other versions). In it are .pf files, these files are used to open applications faster or something. Some people think deleting them improves the PC's performance and others say it's bad. Ryan Myers (a developer on Microsoft's Windows Client Performance Team) has said that there's no need to delete them since they'll be created again, plus, they're automatically deleted, anyways... What you do is up to you but remember, I'm not responsible for anything.

.pss
PSX/PS2 video files, not all games use this video format (maybe ps3 and psp, games use it too, I don't have them so I don't know...). MPEG2 video layer and WAV Audio layer.

.rgb
Another dead end. Although .rgb files are believed to be images I couldn't open them, maybe they're like the .ico files, encoded in a special format for the PS2 only, who knows...

SLES5xx.xx/SLUS2xx.xx
Region codes. They are different in the PAL, NTSC and JPN regions.
There is a technique to change the codes from save files downoaded by the internet, since this is a 'pedia, I'll tell you, be thankfull. Use a program called PS2 Save Builder (www.ps2savetools.com) and open the save. Change the BESLES to BASLUS (or the opposite) and write the number from 5xx.xx to 2x.xxx (x is random number) or the opposite again. Change both the name of the .max (or whatever cheat device it's for) and of the save's, but only these two things!. I don't know how to do in JAP saves. PS2 Save Builder also converts saves so you can use it in your cheating device (I use AR Max).

Do not use l33t $p34k and write something about PES 2008 in the title.

Note: Questions about the links will be acceptable until my Neosseker edition of the guide is accepted.

I'll say it yet again DO NOT SEND ME PMs ASKING FOR HELP ON ANY OTHER OS THAN WINDOWS.

FAQ

What versions of PES 2008 is this FAQ compatible with?

I know it works with the PS2 PAL edition...it should also work with the NTSC editions of the consoles if it works with the PAL. Unless you have a Kreon drive, you can't see the files in XBOX 360 games so I can't help you there. There is no way to fit all that stuff in a DS catridge too, but even if there is, I don't know to take stuff off DS catridges ( I don't have PES 2008 for the DS anyway). Now if the files are the same, this technique should also work in the PS3, PSP, Wii too...if the files are the same. Do not send me PMs about how you can do it if there are other files.

If you want to do something to make me happier then please go here and click the link to the bottom of the page to sign the pledge to be fur-free:

I advise you to not watch the video, the contents inside are too gory.
I, myself, could not bare to watch the whole video and I stoped it almost instantly so unless you don't mind, don't watch it. You can also go around signing petitons protecting the right of people and animals, if you do that then you'll make me happier than you would if you sent me money.
