welcome to this little section for all swappers and other freaks who is
obliging to write some nice words about anything. this pack won`t be
regular diskmag, so i await only some nice experiences with swap, some
partyreports, funny stories... in short it would be good to fill this space
by one to three little articles to be written here. of course, main thing
is news, adverts etc, but this section is here only for variegating this
pack, i still prefer news section, but anyway, no problem to send me some
good/worse experiences with some swapper, any recommending about swappers,
some feelings about new swapper on the scene etc, you know.
please help us a little and don`t let this lines be only mine forever.
don`t be afraid to write some worse about someone, some critics or what, but
please don`t make unnecessary flamewars or big raging here. this mag is
dark and spooky, but please keep friendshipping here as much as you are
already doin` in your snails.
if someone has any new idea to use it here, no problem to realize it,
because this engine was done like full-valuable diskmag and i`m using only
little part of it. but i still want to let this pack in the simple form, we
have many good diskmags which need your help more than sabotage. this pack
could be only little bulletin-board for all swappers in whole amiga world.
keep this infos fresh with your news, memberlists, tunes, introscreens and
moral support and keep this pack spreading only via swapping, no inet
spreading please! thanx for it.
The making of "Janne Ahonen does Assembly" written by Loaderror/Ephidrena
Oh, heres comes a little story about the demo which will surely redefine
the way we think about finnish skijumpers and cross country skiers. This is
yet another story about the making of one of those very important production
that decides whether the amigascene is dead or not. And lets not forget,
that this is a story about the way I would always like to do demos.
This summer, I travelled to Cheetahs place two weeks before assembly,
just for a friendly visit really. We were maybe going to work on our
forthcoming tp-demo (which will kick ass I hope), or we could rush together
a dentro for assembly, if we could get the music from Zixaq in time for this
meeting.
The graphics
After arriving, we listened to some Cd's, played some guitar, piano and
had a look in Cheetahs sisters typography book. That was when we were
really struck hard by a roaring wave of inspiration, what a great source of
almost infinite styles of design and composition this book was. At first we
had a look at some great work that was done for mtv. It was a great design
supposed to express :"global communication", and for sure it did. It had
white backdrops and the composition gave you the impression of the page
being very BIG sort of. Weird effect, but very fascinating.
I loaded up brilliance and tried to make something similar, but even
though I tried to copy the page straight from the book, and onto the screen,
the result wasnt nearly as impressive. In fact, it sucked. The problems:
"resolution of the screen, and dimensions of the screen too". We usually
work in 320x192 because of 192 being dividable with 16 for my 3d tunnel
routines, and for the speed of course :). (sometimes I say that 192 is
closer to the golden ratio than 256 is, but thats just a load of crap,
because my code sucks) . The The original image had lots of very small
texts that I could not replicate on a lores screen, and therefore I lost the
feel of the original style completely. That was annoying, as it could have
been really interesting.
We had to do a different style, that would fit into the resoloution
limitations and widescreen style. It was not apparent at that time what
that was going to be at all.
Then cheetah suggested that we should scan some colours that he had
painted with oil on a piece of bleeched cardboard. Being totally ruthless
to all nonscanning graphicians in the world we agreed on that, and scanned
and scanned till there was nothing left to scan. If we had written "no
scan" into the top of each screen in the demo, we would be the biggest
scanning liars ever :D.
It was now that the demomaking became interesting as it looked great. We
got ourselves a style, and thats probably the most important thing to find
in the startingphase of a production. Although somebody might think so,
random visuals with random colours ,random objects and general randomness,
doesnt make a really good piece of art.
The scans (woooh!) looked old and worn out (like the scanner itself) ,
but at the same time the painted surface was visible and the great nuances
of the original came through. The coolest however, was that it didnt look
like just computerplasma. All demos seem to have backgrounds that feature
just lots of colours smeared together really (including our own demos). So
it might be an idea for other demomakers aswell to look to different medias
for their backgrounds. This might work for textures also, but not for my
texturemapper which makes textures with shape (not the coder) look like a
rhino farting contest anyway.
This was what made the first effect for the demo, the wireframe wheel
with the painted background and some unreadable text on top. We thought
that was really cool, as the wireframes looked a bit like pencilstrokes.
Which is a good thing because we humans like to watch things we understand.
The best effects are always those effects that mimics real life, unless you
are on drugs or something. So if you had a 3d plasma tunnel in your
bedroom, you would think that the most recent ephidrena demos were the best
in the world. Just because you have the same type of tunnel in your
bedroom.
The next great discovery was found by cheetah (again:P when do I get to
be the genius?),as he found a really old newspaper. "Eidsvoll Blad" from
1933 actually. And this was simply too good to be true. Oilpainted
backgrounds, with old worn out newspaper on top, fits in perfectly. And
after scanning a lot, we came up with the first background which is the one
you see on the wireframe waterwheel effect(to call it an effect is probably
impropriate, as its only a mood setting scene really).
The music
Now we were slowly drifting into the "old" style of the demo, and we were
going to make some music. Actually we had already started it, but I didnt
want to mix it into the graphics section too much. This was to be the
hardest part, since me and cheetah are not really that experienced with
musicmaking. We both know notes and cheetah plays the piano and the guitar,
but Ive hardly used my knowledge for anything but goatrance.(imagine that,
old newspapers, oil paint and... goa trance.. hmm :) )
Cheetah wanted triphop, but we had no samples that would fit that style,
and he always tends to want the music to be so hard that you probably
couldnt call it triphop anyway :D. I wanted a more minimalistic style
track, with not so dominant drums, rather more focus on simple melodies.
But honestly that wouldnt fit either, as the backgrounds were a touch to
mighty in colour to be minimalistic after all. Guess I was just infected
with Pc demomusic at the time. After hearing cheetahs annoying : "we gotta
make it harder" cries for several hours, I loaded a couple of samples from
Bjork, and a gabber drum from the "november light" demo a few years ago to
end his sorrows,and thats when the track started to sound like what it
sounds like in the demo, the drums atleast.
The next step in making the music was to sample cheetah playing the
piano. We had only cheetahs crap casseteplayer from hell to do it with, but
as the style was old anyway, we could afford to be a little lo-fi. Cheetah
played a bunch of notes he had found out that sounded nice together on his
piano several times, and then we cut out the one which was best. We still
had to edit it though. You can clearly hear the marks in the sample where
cheetah violently cut out some small pieces of the sound to make it fit the
drums :).
Then we sampled the metal sounds (also from the crappy tape recorder from
hell). These noises was something Cheetah had made in his spare time (sick
sick sick!!!) and starrs the fireplace toolkit rambling to the floor and the
dynamodriven flashlight. Then we had all we needed.. This is what the
track consists of. :) And bloody fun it was to make it this way too..
Instead of just getting stupid cd-samples from the harddrive or off a sample
cd :D.. Get wild you samplequalityperverted musicians out there.
The secret demo
When we had started both music, graphics and code, we thoght that we
could just aswell keep the demo a secret, as a surprise to the other members
of the group. We couldnt get any better music from Zixaq or Frequent
anyway, as Zixaq was working at a childrens colony, and Frequent had
strained his arm, so he couldnt use his computer for some weeks.
We also discovered that we had more time to do the demo for assembly
still. We originally thought that we had only two days, but we luckily
found out that assembly was to be the week after we thought it was going to
be:). Great planning.
Well, the first secret gathering was over, but we decided that we had to
have one more gathering to put everything into place.
Loaderror, the lone coder back alone at his home
Back home, I remembered an rkelly video( doh!) with a nice effect which
had hundreds of photos blowing in the wind, so I decided that i could do a
light version of that on the amiga, and that ended up with the "old sheets
of paper blowing in the wind" effect, which is in fact called the "rkelly"
effect in the demo-sourcecode :)...(Ill dedicate this effect to the rkelly
loving Marcella of spectre :D Ill map rkelly on them some other time ok:) )
I also made some brutal wireframe objects that I havent seen much of on the
amiga really (for some reason,as its easy to do, and it doesnt take THAT
much cpu power to draw some 2 thousand lines or so). Lets see more of that
in other peoples demos aswell. The rkelly effect is also one of those
effects which people will understand, and therefore easily likeable I think.
Shame that Shd had done the same with some papermoney in Traffic (also at
asm) a few years earlier though.
Zixaq, the unpredictable saboteur menace
It was time for the second and final showdown. The only problem was that
agent #$00f Loaderror had managed to leak out to the evil Zixaq that he was
going to cheetahs place for a couple of days that week. But still, he could
not have guessed how much damage that had done until Zixaq called Cheetah
and him and said he was coming over, and maybe we could go into town and do
something different from messing about with our amigas for a change.
Undoubtedly a very good idea under normal circumstances, but this time
deadline was coming fast. There was no time to spill. But we still didnt
want to reveal to zixaq what we were brewing behind his back.
So me and Sondre (cheetah) came up with all sorts of excuses to trick the
cunning zixaq of ephidrena, but to no avail. "No money for town", we said.
And we followed up with a very strong: "We want to work on the Tp demo, and
not code midi now.". No hope though, and soon zixaq was sitting beside us
with a watchful eye on what we were doing. He must have felt pretty
unwelcome, and we had some mixed emotions, some egoistic demo emotions, and
some bad feelings over making poor Zixaq uncomfortable too.,
We know what we coded this summer
"Maybe we could kill Zixaq", Loaderror whispered to Cheetah. The angry
coder could see the pixeller thinking hard over this very important matter.
Zixaq was beginning to become a major problem, and the time was ticking away
drawing ever closer to the end. The assembly deadline, the end of the
world. The day when the combattants of the united scene was going to battle
over the infinite pricemoney, the screaming girls and the unreachable joys
of winning. It was not a fair battle, we knew. We didnt have the largest
guns, nor the fastest horses, but we would not let the devilish zixaq ruin
our chances completely in this pre-war scenario. The battlefield, with the
smell of blood, bits and bytes was tempting us more than ever before.
Zixaq was happily playing the guitar talking about his chords and 6 and 7
while a cunning plan was taking shape in the background. Cheetah nodded
with a broad smile as the two had finished their plan, and soon afterwards
Loady, as they called him, called upon the unknowing trubadours attention.
"Lets go out for a cigarette", said the doublecrossing coder from hell.
Unknowingly, Zixaq rushed to get his cigarette pack, and the poor soul didnt
suspect a thing when Cheetah stabbed him in the back with a razorsharp slice
of dry Pizza. Zixaq fell to the floor without even being able to say :"the
amiga scene is dead". But the angry coder was not yet happy with the amount
of violence in this story. "We need more violence", he said and jammed
Zixaqs head into the floppy drive. The helpless zixaq did not stand a
chance as loaderror crunched his head with stonecracker and afterwards
splitted it across multiple files on his harddrive before finally deleting
them one after the another. The calculating coder and the serial graphician
were happy, now they could still finish the demo.

Shock horror
Well, that was a little piece of horror and computer violence for you
articlestarved sceners, now I want you to know that me and Cheetah are
peacekeeping individuals which honour friendship and equality, so heres the
real end.
After twiddling our thumbs for many hours, I put one of the textures on
the screen and started to work a bit with it to show Cheetah some cool
skycolours I had found. All the time looking nervously in Zixaqs direction,
no reaction from him. Zixaq was very busy working on a picture and didnt
care about what I was doing. And then I thought I could just say that this
was for the Tp demo we always have planned instead. Zixaq havent seen much
of that either, so it wouldnt matter. We couldnt do any music though, he
would have noticed then. Because that's his field.
This was perhaps the strangest working conditions I've been under ever.
Once in a while Zixaq asked how it was going with the effects, and I lied
him straight in the face like the cold calculating coder I am ;D.
It was now apparent that we would reach the deadline, there was only some
finishing touches left. And after some changes in the music, some
phonecalls to finland (ugh, this will hurt badly in my wallet), the demo was
transferred over inet to Leia/Squirrelz who handed in the demo.
Conclusion
This demo looked very much like it could have turned into something
really special, but thanks to the music which was very hardcore really, it
ended up as a sort of Concrete 2. Which is not bad I think. Some say it's
better too, and I agree with them when it comes to the design which has some
more thought to it then the glimses of design in concrete.
I have to say to you, that you should get hold of a book on typography
with loads of examples on different styles of design, as this is such a huge
source of inspiration, that can take your demomaking a bit further than only
to being a collection of digital effects and plasmagraphics. absolutely
reccomended..
And they Ephidrena boys lived happily eever after with their mammoth
fourteenth place at the assembly millenium joint amiga/pc democompetition.

The party will be held in a big hall called Amperhalle, in Emmering near
Fürstenfeldbruck (munich/germany)
This conference is a 100% LEGAL party. That means that copying or using
cracked software is under NO circumstances tolerable.
Starting on Friday the 27th of October (15:30 noon) and ending on Sunday
the 29th of October (12:00).
Since the Comparade is an Amiga and C64 party, only Amiga and C64 are allowed
(Atari and Archimedes allowed though)
Facilities availabel:

- Good sleeping facilities.
- Lots of parkingplace.
- There will be electric arrangements to prevent power blackouts.
- Big videowall.
- Sattelite up- and downlink, but therefore we can't give you gurantee
until now.

The Competitions
----------------
We'll of course arrange competitions at the party, You'er invited to compete
in music, graphics and demos. To make things easier for us, we've set up a
really simple rules which you'll have to follow in order to compete.
These Rules are valid all the competitors. Nothing can have been released
earlier, and the competitive programms must be 100% finished, we can't judge
a demo or anything else for waht it might become. Also the contestant must
be present at the party.
Amiga Demo Competition:
---------------------
In the demo competition every coder can compete with two demos. The Demo
must be able to run on Amiga. (A4000/060-ppc & gfxcard) filesize max 4MB.
C-64 Demo Competition:
----------------------
- All groups can compete with as many demos as they wish.
- Mulitpart demos requires fast-loader.
Please consider if your demo is good enough before you decide to join the
competition. It is though to watch 20 demos created using RSI demomaker,
for many hours, so keep away the lame intros!
Amiga Music Competition
-----------------------
In The music-competition every musician are allowed to compete with a
maximum of two songs, and the song(s) must be given to us as a non
Soundtracker based format.
music should be created using any kind of 'exotic' musiceditor. but no
standard Tracker (e.g. Stonetracker, Protracker, Digibooster, Octamed,
Soundtracker, Startrekker, Art of Noise(Chorus), Noisetracker,
Quadracomposer) and no complete samples (no mp3, wav, 8svx, etc.).
C-64 Music Competition
----------------------
Maximum 2 songs per musician/group can compete.

just the perfect day! at last, fourth issue of sabotage reached to your
postboxes! in the beginning of making this issue, all seemed very bad, i
had no material, no party results, no articles. but some few days before
releasing something happened and i`ve got a maximum of stuff to use here.
"messages" section overflew (maximum is 99 pages/section) and i had to
remove some stuff to next issue. simply, this is the biggest issue i`ve
every kicked out! i`d to apolozige you for the bigger delay with this issue
(and snails for my friends waiting for sabotage releasing), see below to
read described music problems. hope it won`t be repeated anymore.
my saviour was loaderror/ephidrena these times, who wrote nice article
about their new demo making and kempy who sent me his news collection
(przemek, your other swap stuff will be used in next issue, this one is
full). today the musicmaster is: lcr/reason (i planned to use tex/mankind
music, but we had some probs with his longer samples, so we will try to use
it in the next issue if all bugs would be fixed, so - sorry tex for now).
thank you a lot, freaks! and also thanks all supporters for filled votes
and some stuff to kick here out and those ones gave me some new ideas.
but only one thing makes me sad everytime: we have lack of votes! please
ask your swap friends for their votes, the filling takes ONE MINUTE! number
of filled votes decreasing by every issue, please make our only chart more
objective if you like our pack... next and last thing, i left horizontal
lamerz group so next sabotage will be released under "reason" label! i also
became a proud member of madwizards, so i wanna greet all mawi pals!
about our recent swappers chart, hmmm, some placed swapped. evan stays
in the front of all, but kempy beats azzaro... interested! also some
voters wanted to see new freaks in the charts voting for another chart-adept
and angeldust with makak are first adepts to add our chart and kick probably

- corrosion crew just got back from JFJF - yugoslav festival of cheap
movies. after 5 days of movies, concerts and partying, all we can do is
to tell all of you had chance to come but didn't do it, that you've missed
a lot. concerning our little crew, we did a great LO-TEK KINGS live act,
our 2 demos were screened during the festival [BURST and PROJECT42] and we
released our first LOW-FI movie called ON SARMA. this was also the place
where our cooperation with video group KADAR was presented in form of ROAD
TO HELL video with the lo-tek kings tune N2O [soon to be released as ep on
cd!]
