Stellantis announced the new STLA platform for electric vehicles
The future of Stellantis will be electrification
After the merger of PSA and FCA at the beginning of 2021 to form the Stellantis Group, Carlos Tavares , CEO of the group, decided to invest deeply in the electric technology. In the next future, the car's models of PSA (including Peugeot, Citroën and Opel) and FCA (including Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep) will only be based on four STLA (Stellantis Architecture) platforms, all of which are purely electric or plug-in Hybrids designed.
Specifically, there will be:
- STLA Small for micro and compact cars (segments A / B / C)
- STLA Medium for the models in the compact and middle class (C / D)
- STLA Large for the middle and upper middle class (D / E)
- STLA Frame for large SUVs and pick-ups on ladder frames
As early as 2023, new models from the group will be based on the medium and large platforms; the STLA Frame will follow in 2024 and the STLA Small in 2026. This means that the eCMP2 platform for micro, small and compact cars will only be available until 2025.
According to Carlos Tavares, the STLA Small models should have a range of around 500 kilometers , the STLA Medium a range of 700 kilometers and the STLA Large a range of 800 kilometers . The large SUVs and pick-ups on the STLA Frame will have 500 kilometers .
The batteries for the new platforms come from the Stellantis / Saft joint venture ACC (Automotive Cell Co.). Production will start in Douvrin in northern France in 2023, while battery production will start in Kaiserslautern (Germany) at the end of 2025. Both locations should produce a capacity of 50 GWh per year .
The battery housing and the battery control units will be developed and built in-house, the electric motors, however, will come from a cooperation. Here Stellantis has teamed up with the Japanese E-Motor manufacturer Nidec to form the Joint Ventrue E-Motors. In another partnership, Stellantis and Punch Powertrain build together gear units.
By 2030, Stellantis wants to increase the quota of electrified cars in Europe from the current 14 to 70 percent . For the USA the plan is to increase it from 4 to 35 percent . Starting 2030 Stellantis will offer in Europe and North America an electrified version of each car's model .
