NEWS FROM THE EDITOR

Hello, everyone and welcome to the first computer zine from /\/eo-Tokyo 2099 BBS.

Originally, our first newsletter was on paper and came with six pages of cool anime info. Well, it cost us a lot and many people wanted an issue but the problem was that a lot of people didn't want to pay.

Our users from all part of the country suggested that we do something like the Anime Stuff magazines and the Animatsuri mags which were on computer.

Since I am a big fan... I said... what the hell?

The significance of this zine is that a lot of our contributors are scattered all around the country. That's great!!!

Before, I go on I would like to say that /\/eo-Tokyo 2099 is mostly an anime bulletin board. Also, dedicated to other things such as European Demos, Mod files, and other things that most BBS don't bother to have. Very different and trying to let Sysops out there... that many users are bored with what's out there... have some originality and be different from the rest.

Anime BBS are coming out of nowhere which is great but for those who have an anime bulletin board... hehe... at least have more than 30 gifs... and also... RATIOS SUCK!!!

/\/eo-Tokyo 2099 carries around over 300 megs of anime files but I'm not going to tell you that this is the best anime BBS because there are many cool ones like NEO-TOKYO in Colorado, GALVATRON BBS in New York and many more... Like you... if you don't like our opinions let us know why... and we'll put it on our BBS.

Now, about NT: 2099... remember it's only on from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (PACIFIC TIME) until we get another line... I know it sucks... but put up with it for now... well.

That's about it and let us know what you think.

WHY NEO-TOKYO 2099 WAS STARTED

Well, /\/T:2099 was started out of frustration. Last summer I called up bulletin boards and got bored like crazy.

Almost all were the same, despite the differences in ANSI or RIP Screens. The only BBS I felt cool in my area was boards with a teleconference or best yet call long distance to get cool anime files but also get a major phone bill.

Well, out of frustration many of us bitched and bitched and bitched.

I figured that California needs a cool anime bulletin board like the ones on the East Coast...

Almost, all the anime BBS from that Sarcastic Existence anime BBS list is almost nill.

Remember that top 10 anime BBS list... well, only 2 or 3 are still around.

Out of those hundreds of BBS' more like in their tens... So, I made my own BBS with VBBS 6.14 in June `93... I decided to give it a try for a month... and something happened that I wasn't prepared for... I started getting calls from all over the country. And I wasn't even that serious to become a sysop but to personally make a message directed to those sysops who ran lame anime BBS.

So, now it's been four months and the BBS is getting bigger and bigger each month. We changed to the new WILDCAT v4. Of course, their is still more room for improvement and we are currently working on it.

I suppose the main point to all of this is that... this year - it's 1994 not 1989.. the commodore BBS are gone.... people's attitudes have changed since then... and more users continue to call or leave depending on what kind of BBS you have in your local area.

The message is clear... We need more bulletin boards for the long run... we need BBS that are not copy cats... something original, different, that will keep the users coming back for more.

Anime BBS is what's popular in my mind... not too many people have been exposed to anime but they are willing to give it a try. For us... we like to make it that when you log on... you are in a different reality... the cyberpunk kind of mood. Well, I would like to wish all the sysops of those anime bulletin boards for staying in the long run... despite the crap, the time, and the patience... you hung in there.

Arigatou Gozaimasu.-SPY CREW P.S. So, if there are grammatical errors... umm... sure... uhh.... we meant to do that :-)

RANMA 1/2: THE PHENOMENON IN THE U.S.A.

A lot of you have probably heard of Ranma 1/2. In fact, a lot of you are probably sick of hearing the name because no matter how old it is... you still love it. Many of us stick around because we like Rumiko Takahashi's work. A lot of us stick around because we love the anime and are true Otaku no Ranma 1/2. Perhaps you are sticking around to see if Ranma and Akane will ever get together. Whatever reason you have, Ranma 1/2 is still going on strong. Many questions that we receive is where can I get Ranma 1/2. For starters we must bring up the debate that has plagued us Anime fans abroad... Subbed vs. Dubbed debate. In our case, we were exposed to subtitling to Ranma earlier. Some people recorded it from there satellite t.v.'s and then had it subtitled although the quality was not that good. The next step was that anime clubs would buy themselves the whole set of the laserdiscs. There are I believe 40-41 laserdiscs of the 161 episodes which are in straight Japanese. Some clubs would subtitle them or leave them in their straight Japanese form. Viz has released Ranma 1/2 episodes 1-10, OAV 1-4, and the first and second movies in dubbed form. Also, they released a collector's edition of the first three television episodes in subtitled form. I must say that if you haven't seen the subtitled version and you buy the dubbed...you might or maybe not be affected. But if you have seen the straight Japanese or the subtitled version and caught the dub..you will be very disappointed. The male Ranma has a stronger voice in the Japanese, while in the American dubbed version a female is playing a man's voice. T. Kunou doesn't have that voice that we know and love... very low and arrogant... while the voice for Kunou in the dubbed is average. Mousse sounds like a kid in the dubbed version and the Mousse in the Japanese version has a stronger voice. Ryouga also has a low voice in the Japanese version while the American version is average. Everyone else is o.k. What can put most Ranma 1/2 fans in an uproar was probably the 2nd OAV (TENDOU HOME: CHRISTMAS SCRAMBLE) when the dubbed version had to sing Equal Chance. Oh!!! How terrible!! We couldn't take the torture!!! So, as you can tell I am a big advocate of the subtitled or the straight Japanese version but Ranma 1/2 is a must see and if you don't have an anime club in your area or can't find a contact who can subtitle or knows someone who does, then get the dubbed. Ranma 1/2 is an experience that anime fans should experience once, twice, and more... Here is some information on the Ranma 1/2 anime as of Sept. 1994 (NOTE: WE GO BY THE JAPANESE TRANSLATION OF THE NAMES (even though many of us have our own opinion of the name) AND NOT BY VIZ'S TRANSLATION):

TELEVISION EPISODES: There were 161 episodes. On BBS, some people count the Nettouhen episodes separate from the first season (18) episodes. Don't let that confuse you.

WHAT IS RANMA ABOUT?

Ranma 1/2 is about a guy named Ranma Saotome when in contact with cold or room temperature water, turns into a girl. When in contact with hot water he turns back to a man. Well, Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo made a deal that Ranma can marry one of Soun's daughters and Akane was selected (by her sisters since she hates boys and Ranma is half boy, half girl). What happened was that Genma took Ranma to Jusenkyou in China to practice their Kempo. The Chinese Guide told them that in those many lakes below where they were fighting are lakes that things have died in. When you fall into those lakes..you will change to that person. Genma, fell in first to a lake where a panda has died, thus turning him to a panda and Ranma to a girl. There are other characters who fell in the lakes as well. With good plots and interesting stories and many characters... Ranma 1/2 is a comedy that will strike your interest.

A) PLASTIC LITTLE (THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN TITA)
reviewed by PRISS

Plastic Little is a pretty cool oav from A.D. Vision. The story is pretty good and something that I wouldn't mind watching again (and this is coming from a females perspective on this). The subtitling is done pretty good and the new characters are very interesting. I hope they make another one.

RATING: ****

B) IRRESPONSIBLE CAPTAIN TAILOR OAV 1
reviewed by KENNEDY

Ahh... Irresponsible Captain Tailor is that kind of anime that will keep you laughing and wanting more. Justy Tailor is quite unbelievable of the things he does... and it's great. My favorite part is Tailor interacting with the computer in taking his tests... This is a cool anime and trust me... from then on it get's even better.

RATING: ****

C) THE GIRL FROM PHANTASIA
reviewed by Ryouga Hibiki

I liked it. The negative part is that the anime wasn't clear...the animation was not as sharp as I would of liked it to be (o.k. I watch anime also to criticize it technically). The overall story is very good but it kind of reminded me of VIDEO GIRL AI (although, they are quite different). I don't know if A.D. Vision will continue this as a series but I hope they do... Malon is an interesting character.

RATING: ***1/2 (3 1/2)

D) MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO
reviewed by KENNEDY

Well, everyone pretty much saw the straight Japanese or subtitled version but the version I'm reviewing is the dubbed version. As most of you know, I hate dubs. I'm not a big fan unless they do it right. In fact, the only dub that I have the patience for as of yet is Mermaid Scar. Project A-Ko is o.k.. and forbid Animeigo's dubbed Bubblegum Crisis. There are some anime that should be left alone (straight or subtitled). Now, what about MNT. Well, let me just say that for a dubbed anime.... this has become my favorite dubbed anime. The voice actors have done a great job and if you have never seen My Neighbor Totoro, you won't be pissed off by it. Unless, if you are a diehard MNT fan and hate the dub. I recommend seeing it. In fact, I was quite shocked to see no other than Mr. Carl Macek at the ending credits... well, Mr. Macek.. if your dubs are going to be as good as this from now on...then I will keep recommending your anime.

RATING: ***** (yes, I'm giving it a perfect star.. It's still Hayao Miyazaki!!!!)

E) RANMA 1/2 OAV 5
reviewed by KENNEDY

This OAV (or OVA) is about two sisters who claim that Soun Tendo is their father. Akane doesn't quite believe that and Ranma and Akane challenge the sisters to a duel. Whoever loses must leave the Tendou Dojo. and guess who loses... It's pretty good for the first part although I must admit that for a Ranma 1/2 video (I usually watch them in straight Japanese or subbed...), I had problems with understanding this. Although, the ending has sparked my curiosity of the 2nd part (OAV 6) which came out last week. It's something different... and if you know any subtitlers... tell them to sub this one...

RATING: ***1/2 (3 1/2)

F) TENCHI MUYOU SPECIAL/OAV 7
reviewed by GAMBIT-X

All I can say about this is WOW!! If you are a big fan of Tenchi Muyou.. you will love this one! Let's just say that all the girls are fighting for Tenchi... and the plot is great!! This is my favorite of all the Tenchi oav's and one of my favorite anime episodes of all time. It's that good!!! Pioneer's CAV format helps too..so, you can watch it straight Japanese, Dubbed, or sub-titled (if you have a closed caption t.v.).

RATING: ****

G) CLASSIC ANIME REVIEW: VIDEO GIRL AI OAV 1
reviewed by SKULD

Video Girl Ai is one of my favorite anime's of all time. It should be released in America and if it is..please don't dub it!! As for the first OAV, you will love it!! So, far all my friends who have seen it had to buy themselves the laserdiscs and the characters and voice acting are great!! We have seen it subtitled and I hope a lot of you have the opportunity to see this.

NOTE FROM KENNEDY: To all the dude's out there, the biggest thing that most of the guys have said after watching this is...Why couldn't we have seen this in High School or I wish I had that tape now...It's a gut wrenching tear your heart I felt this before when my girlfriend dumped me feeling that you will really get ya.

THE ANIME MUSIC REVIEW

As the anime review, if you would like to have a music review of yours on here please send it to us or put it on your BBS. These anime c.d.'s are great to buy and also very expensive. Let's save some people some money if these anime c.d.'s turn out to be a flop or not.... Please include the cost of the c.d. (or album or tape) and catalog number.

A) KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD-"SINGING HEART"

CATALOG #: LD32-5061

COST: $30-40

TRACKS: 12 songs (all vocal)

NOTE: Songs from the t.v. episodes

COVER: Madoka lying down, painted in pink, light blue and purple watert colors by Akemi Takada.

I won't go into each song but to talk about why I recommend this music c.d. First, if you are a Kimagure Orange Road fan, this is a must have. From the opening theme and ending theme of the t.v. episodes and all songs except one from the music video are on this c.d. Very clear and I don't recommend this if you haven't watched K.O.R. because you won't know the significance of the music. If you want to know if this is the best K.O.R. c.d. each to his/her own opinion.. I have 3 favorites from the K.O.R. series and this is one of them.

RATING: ****

B) PROJECT A-KO ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
(release by U.S. Manga Corps)

CATALOG #:USM 1138

COST: $18-25

TRACKS: 12 tracks (3 vocals, all B.G.M.'s (background music)

COVER: A-ko running with C-Ko behind and B-ko in uniform.

This is the same music from the Japanese version. Also, the Japanese used Americans for the music for their series believe it or not. So, don't expect to find a Japanese Idol singer to be singing these songs. If you are an A-Ko fan, you probably have this all ready. Recommended for the PJA fans out there. In fact, every review I have read in an anime magazine has given this c.d. positive remarks and highly recommended. For the price, I say hell yeah... It's worth buying!!!

RATING:****

C) RANMA 1/2: FIRST SEASON B.G.M C.D

CATALOG #: PCCG-00192

COST: $18-25

TRACKS: 17 tracks (3 vocals, and some tracks have 2 B.G.M. songs in each instrumental track)

COVER: Ranma in yellow, Genma, and Akane holding P-Chan (yellow, white and blue background)

For Ranma 1/2 fans...this is a must have!! I'm sure most of all of you have them all ready...hehe..but the music is all Ranma..from the first season. The vocals are the "Yappapa song" (YES! The song that drives non-Ranma 1/2 fans mad...so crank it up louder in front of them). Has the ending song "PLATONIC" song and also Akane's "Half my heart" song (Is that what it's called). Highly Recommended for a B.G.M.

RATING: ***** (O.k., I'm biased because I'm a Ranma Otaku)

THE EURO DEMO AND MOD SECTION

In Europe, the big thing on BBS their are Euro Demos and who can make the best graphic Euro Demo and cool music to boot. Now, it's a lot of hard work and these guys go out of their way from having major like cons/parties to demonstrate who has the best European Demos. For those programmers or people who want something different.. give it a try. Here are some cool demo's I recommend.

CRYSTAL DREAMS 2
from TRITON

FACTS OF LIFE by WITAN (Oh! If you download this.. to bypass the graphics and want to see the house music video.. type FACTS P5 and you will bypass the usual stuff and go directly there).

There are many more..and a lot of groups out there... you have your usual read me Euro Demos, music Euro Demos, Euro Suck Demos, Small Euro Demos and on and on... but check them out.

As for mods, they are music made by people and distributed in MOD form. A lot of techno/house groups release their stuff in MOD form too... (not WAVs). There are many good MOD players out there.. but I notice that most people I know use the SPP MOD player because it usually plays most of the MODS without crashing on you. Check those out.... and maybe you can find a mod of your favorite song or band on there....

MANGA & ANIME MAGAZINE NEWS AND REVIEWS

This section will have manga reviews and manga news. If you want to do a review of a certain manga… Please send it in to us. Also, you can post it in our manga message base.

A) VIDEO GIRL AI (JAPANESE MANGA)

This is a very good manga. The art is great and even if you don't understand Japanese.. the pictures are indeed worth a lot of words. If you know the story of Video Girl Ai, then you will be in for a surprise. Also, the ending that was changed in the anime is totally different in the manga. It's a great manga... and can't wait to finish the collection. In some places you can get each book for $5.00 but in some places like comic books.. they increase the price depending on the book.

B) KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD (JAPANESE MANGA)

A SPY CREW member owns the second manga and the art is not all that great. Although, I have heard that after the second.. it's the art that we know and love. As for the story, I recommend it for you if you can read Japanese or at least learning it. Even if you know the story..you may notice the usual K.O.R. humor but their are some characters that might stymie you... and the question is if I recommend it... I say yes if you are a hard core K.O.R. fan... and no if you are not.

The cost for the book is $15.00

C) MAISON IKKOKU (ENGLISH TRANSLATED MANGA FROM VIZ)

This has got to be one of the best manga's I've read. It's also a hot seller at comic book stores. We talked to a lot of store owners and heard that they sell out quickly. I don't know what to say. I don't have the whole collection. I guess you can say that you can pick up the story and what kind of story Maison Ikkoku is from each issue. I was fortunate to find the back issues and hopefully Viz releases a graphic novel and if they do... I highly recommend it.

D) BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: GRAND MAL
(FROM STUDIO PROTEUS/DARK HORSE)

Adam Warren is back from his cool art from DIRTY PAIR: SIM HELL to BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: GRAND MAL. I must say that I liked all four issues. Also, I enjoy Adam Warren's art and it was like a bonus to the story. It was very good to see Priss take a good role in this 4 issue series. I'm just glad it's not related to BUBBLEGUM CRASH. Studio Proteus has good manga coming out. One is the OH! MY GODDESS english translation of the original Japanese Manga and also a graphic novel of the successful ORION will be out.

COMIC BOOK REVIEW

A) REVIEW ON THE X-TITLES "PHALANX" CROSSOVER
Review by Gambit-X

This is a review on Marvel's PHALANX 1994 crossover which was in all X-Titles. From the pre-Generation X to other shocking things that will direct the X-titles to something new.... First, is the fact that Scott Summers (CYCLOPS) and Jean Grey (PHOENIX) want to tell Cable that they were Slim and Red that taught him when he was a child. Bobby Drake (ICEMAN) who will go through changes since the White Witch possessed his body. Wolverine... what will happen to him... Are we close to who the traitor will be for the X-Men and a lot more...It's starting to get real good again. Also, I'm very thankful that Marvel is keeping the $1.95 to the X-TITLE DELUXE issues with shiny stock paper. It's great to know that they actually kept it at $1.95 and for those who don't like that paper, they kept the regular at $1.50. I hope they keep the format that way. Also, I was slightly dissapointed of the cost of the crossover titles. For instance, Cable (despite the gimmick cover) going for $3.95 and the rest at $2.95. That was a little too much... This was a good crossover. Not the best... but will open up many storylines in the future.... Also, the new Generation X characters are pretty cool....

B) GEN 13 (from IMAGE)
review by KENNEDY

O.k..O.k..all you see is the hype about Gen 13... of how Jim Lee's art is great...how the women's you know what withstands gravity... Is it true!! YES!! I won't go into it much..but just pick up a book. And for those who got #1... aren't we lucky!!!

C) THE ZERO HOUR SERIES (from D.C. COMICS)
review by GAMBIT-X

I was upset that they were going to change the D.C. continuity again but I have a lot of confidence in Dan Jurgens... if anyone can do it..he can. Will the storyline shock us.. it sure damn did!!! In the beginning, I thought that Extant was the bad boy of the story..which is WaveRider and MONARCH together.... but it ended up to be our new bad boy.. Hal Jordan (yes, the guy psycho former Green Lantern). The 5 parter was great.. and for those who lucked out on getting the comic..right after #0 came out... came the trade paperback. I'm sure you were shocked. And the zero issues that preceded after the Zero Hour were very good too... and also, the pre-Zero Hour stuff.. Their were many good stories and some bad ones... but I'll tell you one thing... at least they fixed that D.C. Universe... until some editors come in and start messing it up again...

D) PRIME (from ULTRAVERSE)
review by KENNEDY

Prime has got to be one of the best stories out there... I started from #1 and quit for a while but then I noticed how good the ULTRAVERSE stuff really is. Prime is one of the best and I recommend anyone to give it a try.. it won't disappoint you. It's about a kid named Kevin who turns into Prime... a bulky kick ass super hero. He's trying to learn his new powers and trying to fit in... There's a lot I can say about this.. but give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

COMIC NEWS IN MY AREA

VALIANTS are not selling anymore... believe it or not... I remember when it was difficult enough to get an issue but when they tied everything together (in a way you had to buy almost every issue)..a lot of people quit on Valiant. Despite their good stories.. they are losing a lot of quality people and their books are expensive but affordable. That brings up ULTRAVERSE.. in some areas.. it may not be selling that well, but here... and other places.. it's the new hype..or the new Valiant. People are trying to get back issues of the stuff... I decided to catch a few issues and fell in love with them. to MARVEL, What can I say, Marvel is Marvel..and I love the X-Titles.. although, the Spider-Man issues with the clone is really confusing the hell out of me... Other than that their are other good stuff which leads me to D.C. with their POST ZERO HOUR stuff on the shelves.. it's a brand new start and the hype from the Death of Superman, the BATMAN long crossover, and the GREEN LANTERN sparked a lot of comic fans curiosity and D.C. might make a comeback and the end of the SANDMAN is coming near??... as for IMAGE, I was upset when Shaman's Tear's was cancelled..I remember when they said that they are staying with the original members of the group and no more stupid stuff but what fits into the IMAGE continuity. Well, as you noticed there are more writers with their own books coming out... more really stupid looking characters like BOFF or whatever the name is coming out... no matter what they put out..I will keep reading SPAWN, WILDC.A.T.S., BRIGADE, YOUNGBLOOD, CYBER FORCE, SUPREME FREAK FORCE, and SAVAGE DRAGON (and probably keep on reading MAXX and PITT). Unfortunately, like Valiant.... a lot of their issues, you have to buy the other issues to know what the hell is going on.. like the X-titles..but their are only 7 or 10 of them out there... their is around 30 or more Image titles out there... Of all people, they should know that we aren't that rich!!! And Independents like BONE is still a favorite of mine... and haven't read my SHi's and unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Lady Death to comment on... so, if you have an opinion on any comic new.. let us know. We would like some reviews as well...

INSIDE VIDEO GAMING

There are many reviews that we can do..but we will try to focus on Japanese and American video games and also what's out in the arcade. Again, if you'd like to review a video game let us know.

VIDEO GAMES

At this year's Anime America 1994 convention I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse and play some cool anime games. I bought this one when it first came out, which is Ranma 1/2 III: SUPER BATTLE. It will be out in the U.S. as RANMA 1/2: ANYTHING GOES MARTIAL ARTS and the American version will have the American voice actors voices and will be out in America soon. As for the Japanese version, I like it a lot but a main problem is the speed..which they could of made it faster. Also, the voices were a bit muffled. Do I recommend Ranma 1/2 PART III...I sure do if you are a big Ranma fan. It's a cool fighting game with many of moves and in my own opinion better than the others.. although, some Ranma fans say the 2nd is the best. Another one I will review is the RANMA 1/2: RPG GAME. This was offered by DIEHARD a few months ago for $50.00. Is it good... yes, very much so.. but the problem is I don't understand much Japanese... I wish they will release it in the U.S. but that's highly unlikely. The next game is SLAM DUNK based on the popular anime t.v. series. SLAM DUNK is very good if you're a fan of it... if you are getting it for a basketball game.. it's not worth it. There are some games like the slam dunk... or the free throw shots in which you are trying to impress the female character from the show. Also, the main game is a very small super deformed basketball game. The next is Yu YU Hakoushou (or better known to some as the POLTERGEIST REPORT). I was able to see both fighting games and fans of the show were telling me the 2nd was the best. I have never seen the show but read synopsis of it. It looks pretty good and if you are a fan of the show, I suppose it's worth it. Fans of the show were in awe while playing it. BTW, most of the games mentioned are for the SUPER FAMICOM and SNES w/ an adapter or if you break those tabs. The next game is MORTAL KOMBAT II. With changes in some of the background..this game is great!! Also, the voices are exactly like the arcade.... the hype is was right and it is worth it and worth buying. With the new rating system, all fatalities so far as I know of are there. Of course, I recommend renting before buying.. unless you want to spend those bucks...but Mortal Kombat II is a winner. Good luck in trying to find a copy of it. As for the arcade...rumor has it that their is a new upgrade Version of Mortal Kombat II... is it true??? Let us know if it is. Also, the hype from the anime nets is a game out there called "DARK STALKERS" which is like cartoon or anime characters or something like that... let us know what it's about and give us a review... From what you guys are talking about.. it must be good. I must add that most of the games we reviewed are for the SNES. Sorry Genesis or Jaguar or whatever system fans... Also, if anyone knows any new secret codes in RANMA III: SUPER BATTLE please let us know!!! And we will start putting codes in our next newsletter. C-Ya. ^_^

ANIME SOFTWARE RELEASE:

BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: THE SCREEN SAVER
from SOFTWARE SCULPTORS

I recently got my BGC screensaver and I love it. I got it for my IBM Windows and it's nice to see anime right through your computer with their additions of 8 music videos from Hurricane Live 2032 and Hurricane Live 2033. The Screen Saver itself is great. around 1 to 5 second clips of certain scenes from the 8 BGC OAV's. In which you can select from a dozen or more sections on BGC from BOOMERS to BGC_GORE and more. Is it worth it? Definitely. In fact, it's very good that I'm hoping that after they are done with their next project which is PROJECT A-Ko. I hope they think about doing Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Ah! My Goddess, Kimagure Orange Road or LUM*Urusei Yatsura but the only way they will do these is if you let them know. The people at

Software Sculptors are pretty cool and give them a call at (212) 679-1171 (also, call this number to order the BGC: Screensaver). Their BBS # is (212) 679-0220. Talk to Rita or Mike. Also, to add is that it is also available for Macintosh users as well. NOTE to IBM WINDOWS USERS: 4 megs of ram will run o.k. for the BGC Screensaver... if you got 8 megs.. it'll run smoothly.

ANIME NEWS: SPOTLIGHT ON ANIME AMERICA CON 1994

Anime America 1994 was a cool convention!

With guest of honor: Go Nagai (Cutey Honey, Mazinger Z, just to name a few) and Akemi Takada (Character Designer of Kimagure Orange Road, Lum*UY, Mobile Police Patlabor and more...).

Well, first..let's start with DAY 1 for us (actually DAY 2 for some people since it started on a Thursday Night and we went there Friday).

DAY 1:

The long travel to San Jose wasn't that bad. The weather was awesome.. cool and not hot like it is in our area (108 degrees).

The first thing we noticed were the cool badges that those who per-registered got which had faces of popular anime characters like Akane, Belldandy, Nabiki Tendo and more... but when it came to registration... many people not just us.. noticed the first problem.

Some of the crew of Anime America 1994 were very rude!

I know, I know... that putting on a convention is stressful but damn!

People traveled many miles not to get in line and receive a smart-ass answer by a girl wearing Spock ears (or could of it have been Lodoss? hehe). Aside from that, the first thing we heard from people is, "How unorganized!!!"

Aside from that, we ventured into the dealer's rooms to spend some money!

They had a lot of cool stuff there! From Kimono My House's anime merchandise to the Binbo Club's merchandise, also merchandise from Studio Proteus and the Viz booth. We spent a lot of money on a lot of anime music CDs, magazines and wall scrolls. Although, now I wish I bought that "Ranma 1/2:Neighborhood Combat" game for $30.

The next thing we did was stay in line for the autograph session with Go Nagai.

We were just four people away from being our turn and then we heard he was about to stop.

I felt saddened. I felt that I have been in line for 2 hours now but then Go Nagai decided that he would continue.

We got an illustration of "Cutey Honey". That was great!

Then I saw Akemi Takada, took a picture of her, of Go, of Trish Ledoux. And then I saw a parody of Dirty Pair and Iczer-C (which was titled "Iczer-C-Ko").

DAY TWO:

We were ready to attack the dealer's room once more.

We were there quite early.

We were out of cash but thank God we had brought our checks but unfortunately, not many of them took checks.

So, then I was getting badgered by the people from FOX who were doing a news report on anime. I was getting followed a lot by them and so I managed to ditch them and made it to the Akemi Takada panel.

One thing I was disappointing was there were a lot of people there that it was shameful that not too many people wanted to ask questions (I mean this lady came thousands of miles).

So, I started asking questions like crazy... (good ones that required her to think a lot) but the negative part was this guy kept on badgering her to "PLEASE ELABORATE".

The questions I asked her and the answers she gave, will be featured in an upcoming NT2099 Zine but she gave out some free stuff that people could win but it was "Janken Pon" (the Rock, Paper, Scissors game), a game that I have had no success... even as a child. I lost, so back to the Dealer's Room we went.

The next thing was getting her Akemi Takada's autograph which started at 5:00 p.m. We lined up around 2:00 p.m. and got out of there around 6:30 p.m.

Yes, I am a big fan of "Kimagure Orange Road" as well.

She did an illustration of Madoka's eyes for me and she signed my "Kimagure Orange Road"

Now, it was time for the Anime Game Show by AnimEigo and Cris Swett.

I made it to the final 6 people out of 50 or more people. It was taking to long to get to the final three winners, so, the crowd asked for "Janken Pon". You can imagine what went through my mind when they decided to do it.

AHHHH!!!! I knew from that point that I would lose and I made it to the the last 5 and another person and myself lost, so, the three finalist were selected.

In a way I was glad I didn't win..because I didn't know crap about "Madox", "Moldiver" or "Gaiarth".

So, next was the infamous MASQUERADE EVENT. I think a lot of you who went remembered this year's masquerade. It's not something too many anime fans would like to talk about.

Our friends of the Japanese Animation Society of Hawaii did a great "Mazinger Z" skit.

The Irresponsible Captain Tailor was great too.

But the worst moment when a guy came out dressed up as Ranma Chan. What was most embarrassing was what he said... I don't know if most of you know about the rivalry between Anime America and Anime Expo... but there is no love loss between these two conventions. The guy with the Ranma-Chan costume came out and said "WELCOME, TO ANIME EXPO!"

My mouth dropped... People were saying "Oh, $@$@!" and "Wrong convention!".

To redeem himself, he went to correct himself and said "WELCOME, TO ANIME EXPO!" and screwed up once again.

Then he sung the "EQUAL CHANCE" song from the Ranma 1/2 OAV #2 (The X-Mas song). First, hearing the dubbed version was bad enough... but to hear this guy sing it.

It was painful! You can hear people in the audience moaning and cussing.

Then to wake up the crowd came out guys wearing their underwear and underwear on their heads for "Sukebe Senshi Sailor Moon". It was funny but I wonder how our Japanese guests felt.

Then a great skit that got crowd members going was a ZEON "Gundam" skit from Essai (of Comiket) and Blair Heald. What a masquerade event!! Can't wait until next year to watch the next one.

Next, was to see the much hyped..."MACROSS PLUS" OVA 1 (which would be in straight Japanese) and the second live action "GUYVER" movie.

DAY THREE:

Day three was more of a "feeling bummed out" kind of day. Because we knew the fun was about to end.

We had a long drive back home, so we couldn't stay until the end of the convention.

So, on the final day, We went into the Dealer's rooms once more to see what we can still purchase.

I purchased the Anime America 1994 T-shirt with Akemi Takada's illustration of Madoka Ayukuwa (from "Kimagure Orange Road") in the back. We went to the Anime Gaming Panel (which was more about paper-based RPG's than video games) and went home.

RATING THE CONVENTION

As for people who been to many anime conventions, I heard them criticize the conventions flaws quite a bit.

My only flaw was that when a person lost their badge, they had to purchase another one for $25.00 (or $15.00 depending on how many days).

There were many lost badges from what we observed and I spoke to a few very angry people who couldn't get a refund after they found their badges. In fact, we seen many people who found those badges selling them for $5.00 each to people who wanted to get in for free (since the guards don't check the names, they just look for a badge).

That was the only thing I felt so bad about for the people who traveled so far for this convention. People from as far as Hawaii and all the way from New York traveled to Anime America 1994.

Last, as I mentioned earlier, the crew at registration were a bit rude. Not all of them. The woman heading the security guards is a person who I am proud of. She found my lost camera and she was dedicated to finding it.

All in all, it was a great convention in our eyes... we loved it!

Here's some advice to first timers to an anime con:

ADVICE TO FIRST TIMERS AT AN ANIME CONVENTION

  1. Despite what anyone says... bring a lot of money. We brought $400 which went to the hotel, the registration and there were so many deals that our money was pretty much all gone. My advice if you have the money, bring around $500-$1000. There are a lot of good merchandise in the Dealer’s Room.
  2. FOOD-If you want to save money, bring a lot of food. Restaurant prices can kill money wise. We brought a lot of sandwiches but they weren’t enough. Also, if you didn’t bring food and don’t have enough money, a wise hint since there are so many parties to attend, go to a party and enjoy the food!
  3. BRING A BAG-Bring a bag to hold all your stuff in. A lot of people lost a lot of their purchased items. It gets very crowded in the dealer’s rooms.
  4. BRING A CAMERA-Bring a camera to take a lot of pictures. If you got a video camera, that is even better.
  5. GET A LOT OF SLEEP THE DAY BEFORE the CON STARTS!!! You’ll need it!!!
  6. MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE - Meet a lot of people and make new friends.
  7. DON’T GET INVOLVED WITH THE ANIME POLITICS OF RIVALRIES OR FACTIONS – That totally sucks!!! Don’t choose sides either.
  8. IF YOU WANT FREE PUBLICITY FOR YOUR BBS OR STUFF YOU WANT TO SELL - Lay our your business cards or flyers on the table. A lot of people do take the stuff.
