Word From The Editor

Welcome to the NEW EMC! Back from its death in early 1996, we plan on having this be a year-long project.
EMC now has its own distribution site, as this will get the information spread out to the entire community a lot faster than before. We will also have a distribution bot floating around irc. Distribution information can be found in the next section of this issue.

EMC's purpose is to inform any elite Macintosh users in the community of all new releases, tricks, tactics, what-have-you. There are sections dedicated to new programs, new games, new software features, and other informational pieces from authors.

DO NOTE: I, or any other authors of EMC will NOT support Microsloth products for the Macintosh. I will not write any articles regarding "cool" MS software, because no such thing exists.

Please distribute this file to other elite sites, and check back on our web page for new monthly issues.

¥ Macintosh IRC Bots ¥

After wasting a night of studying in search of a stable, functioning, still supported Macintosh IRC Bot, I came across a bot called ShadowBot, created by John Bafford.

ShadowBot, to my surprise, was still being worked on by John Bafford, and only after two days of testing there was a new beta available for downloading.

I had tested QwertyBot, StealthBot, SeekerBot, and a few others, all to find disappointing. A few of them were ripoffs of original code from an older Mac irc bot. Non of them were stable, most would freeze after changing a few things in the preferences. ShadowBot is extremely stable.

ShadowBot is very similar to setting up a BBS. You create a userlist, and each user can have different access levels on the bot. I won't go into detail on access levels, but there is also an extensive shitlist that you can create--very helpful when dealing with a channel filled with lamers.

If you are interested in running a bot on IRC, check out ShadowBot's homepage at: http://www.bcpl.lib.md.us/~jbafford/shadowbot/ Here you will find an e-mail address for support for registered users, links to pages that list servers that support IRC bots, and a few other helpful things. As of now, John Bafford is developing a page for ShadowBot scripts.

¥ Ircle 2.6 Pre Releases ¥

Having trouble with the alpha release of Ircle? Join the crowd. It seems as if after 2.6a16, the program went to hell. 2.6a19 and 2.6a20 don't have functioning DCC transfers. If you're looking for a stable version of 2.6, find 2.6a16 somewhere and get an SN# for it. You'll be pleased.

Ircle 2.6a16 sometimes has trouble opening multipel channels, but this is occasionally. I won't go into detail on new features of Ircle, but fealt it was necessary to provide this info to anyone testing out pre-release versions of 2.6. For the latest versions of Ircle, get them from the homepage: http://www.xs4all.nl/~ircle

¥ Kaleidescope 1.0b5 ¥

Looking to give your Mac that always wanted custom look? Here's your answer. K-scope is a control panel with Greg's Buttons and Aaron built in, and with a few new features. There are (currently) 4 different color schemes that you can choose from. However, the author is not distributing any information on how to make your own color scheme (why, we do not know). An SN# should be floating around so that you can get rid of the annoying shareware message at startup, aside from that, get it from their homepage: Greg's">http://greg.math.harvard.edu/">Greg's Homepage

¥ HTML Development ¥

Time and time again I hear, "What is the best HTML program?" Simpletext. However, Simpletext has a 32k barrier for files, if a file exceeds that length, Simpletext will no longer open it. This calls for BBEdit 4.0.1.

Not only is BBEdit 4.0.1 a basic text editor, it has several short cut buttons in a separate menu for HTML development. Very slick, and very handy for commands that are a pain in the ass to continually type.

¥ Warper + [k] ¥

This sweet pre-release ware allows for customizing of your Mac's desktop, menus, menu bar, trash can icon, and system sounds. Very cool desktop patterns, and the final version is supposed to have four times the amount of patterns to choose from.

As of now, there are about a dozen different 'themes' you can choose from, and the really cool feature of this ware is that it blends the desktop pattern theme into the menu bar--no more one flat color, you actually get part of the background in the menu bar! What's also cool about this program is that it allows you to customize the menu bar by picking any pattern you want, without having to select a desktop patter. You can also choose between system sounds, folder icons, trash can icons, and Apple icons (in the menu bar).

If you see this ware, get it! It's somewhat compatible with Kaleidoscope. The menu bar patterns, trash can icons, and Apple Menu icons stay the same in all applications, but Kaleidoscope takes control of pull down menu colors and highlighting colors in any open applications. It's cool to mix and match Kaliedoscope themes with Warper themes, try it out!

¥ System 7.6 (aka Harmony) ¥

To clear things up with this System 7.6 thing, here you go, lamers:

  • Yes, it will work on a 68k mac. Remember, System 8 is going to be PPC native?
  • No, it's not stable yet. It's due out in January of 1997, you can figure out how early it really is in its testing stages.
  • Should you run it on your Mac? No. Unless you want to deal with something completely unstable. It's stupid to play around with pre-release system software, especially system software that's still in its developer release stages. Do not run it unless you have another HD that you can spare to run this version of the OS on.

¥ System 7.5.5 ¥

Several people in #macfilez have complained that System 7.5.5 is completely unstable/unreliable. I find this hard to believe. I'm running it successfully on a 7600/120. Of course, I don't have hundreds of lame extensions in the way of my system. Here's a few suggestions of what you should use to get System 7.5.5 up and running successfully:

  • Format your HD with HDT 2.0.1
  • Install System 7.5.3 with Unity. Do a *complete* install on a freshly formatted HD.
  • Update to System 7.5.5
  • Update your LaserWriter software to 8.4.1
  • Update Colorsync to v2.1 GM
  • Update OpenTransport to v1.1.1b8c7
  • Use MacSLIP 3.0.4 or FreePPP 2.5v2 for SLIP/PPP connections
  • Check your system with Norton 3.2.1 or MacTools 4.0.4
  • Update Stuffit Deluxe to v4.0.1
  • Install Data Recovery Toolkit 2.0.3
  • Install SpeedDoubler 1.3.1

The above is basically a guaranteed safe and stable system, no matter who you are. I've run the above setup on a 7600 and a 6100 without any problems, I suggest you do the same.

¥ Finder Copying & Related Utils ¥

SpeedCopy 1.3.1 - A good idea, but still needs a lot of work. Maybe this will be cool once everything is native and the System is actually good at doing multiple copies at once, but for now, I'll keep my regular Finder copying than let SpeedCopy eat up my files. There are still several incompatibilities with SpeedCopy 1.3.1.

Aladdin's Copy Util - Was cool at first, but proved to be a tad bit on the slow side. Aladdin's Desktop Utils were cool when it was originally called SpeedyFinder. Unfortunately, those days have passed.

Finder Copy - This is, hands down, the fastest way to copy files to a floppy disk. But who uses floppies anymore? Most copy utils take advantage of using the control-drag method to temporarily disable the copy util.

CopyDoubler 2.0.7 - Aside from featuring this copy program in issue #2, I'm going to take back what I originally said. Copy Doubler has several useful features, one that is really helpful when doing HUGE network copies--copy verification. This has saved my ass several times when copying large quantities of files from HD <-> Syquest, HD <-> Zip, HD <-> Jazz, or HD <-> HD on a network. It even has scheduled copying times, and the latest version is enhanced for the PCI Macs--very slick.

What's new on the scene:

¥ MacKali ¥

A very cool control panel with a lot of potential. With the Kali server, you are able to play network games with other Macintosh users over the internet! I haven't tried this out yet, but obviously speed is the most important concern and whether or not these games will actually be able to be played with all the usage the server will be getting.

For those of you who have tried it, send us a message and let us know how it works and which games work the best! You can check out the MacKali
