Stir-Fried Shrimp in Clear Sauce (Gluten-Free)


  • 1 pound of peeled and deveined shrimp
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2.5 cups of water
  • A few slices of ginger
  • 2 green onions
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 bunch of baby bok choy
  • 1/4 cup of the clear sauce (prepared in step 2)
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
  • Arrowroot starch mixed with water to thicken the sauce


  • Start by peeling and deveining the shrimp.
  • Season the shrimp with salt, pepper, and olive oil. Set aside.
  • In a saucepan, add 2.5 cups of water along with the slices of ginger, green onions, bay leaves, and star anise.
  • Simmer the mixture for 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. After simmering, strain out all the solid ingredients, leaving you with a clear sauce.
  • Place the baby bok choy in a steamer. Season with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  • Steam for approximately 1 minute or until the bok choy is tender.
  • Heat a medium-sized pan over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the seasoned shrimp and cook for about 1-2 minutes, just until they start to turn pink.
  • Pour 1/4 cup of the clear sauce (prepared in step 2) into the pan with the shrimp.
  • Add a mixture of Arrowroot starch and water to thicken the sauce to your desired consistency. Stir well to combine.
  • Drizzle 1 teaspoon of sesame oil over the shrimp.
  • Place the cooked shrimp on top of the steamed baby bok choy.
  • Serve immediately, and enjoy your gluten-free stir-fried shrimp in clear sauce!
