HomeCraft Personal Journal: welcome to the first issue

This is the first issue of the HomeCraft Personal Journal and I think we are off to a good start. We've got some interesting articles covering a wide variety of topics. And we've got some great new software based on a new shareware program called the Illustrated Reader. (If you are thinking about putting together an on-disk publication, pick up a copy of the Illustrated Reader.)

Since this is a new publication you probably have no idea what it's about. Our name is the HomeCraft Personal Journal because this publication is about people. I've spent a lot of time thinking about what I want our editorial philosophy to be and the types of subjects I want to cover. I had a tough time with this. There are too many things I want to do!

So I did what I always do when I face a complex question. I got down to basics and asked myself the question, "Why did I decide to publish the HPJ?" The answer is that I wanted to do something to help people. That's what the HomeCraft Personal Journal is all about - helping people. But, we are going to do it in a different way, because I believe that understanding other people is the basic building block upon which all else is built. This is not going to be a magazine filled with self-help articles. This is going to be a magazine about people -- the problems we have, who we are, what we do (and why), what we like, dislike and what we think. The HPJ is about getting to know each other better. And maybe, as we get to know each other, you can offer your experiences and advice to help some of the people you read about in the HPJ.

Thanks right. We want to hear from you. If you think you can help any of the people you read about in this issue, please send us your advice. If you disagree with anything you read, we want to hear from you. If you have a problem you need help with or a story you'd like to tell - please write it down and sent it to us.

If you'd like to tell your story or write an article - send it to us. That's right! We want to put your story in the HPJ! I want to hear from you.

Write to: Robert Johnson, Editor H.P.J., P.O. Box 1123, Cannon Beach, OR 97110

You can also contact us via our BBS at 503-692-0382 (see the section on using our BBS for more information) or via fax at 503- 692-0382.

I'd particularly like to thank Stanley Schmidt for joining the HPJ with his editorials. Mr. Schmidt is a well know science fiction writer and editor of Analog Magazine. His editorials express some very common sense views and I feel they do a good job of helping us establish what we want the HPJ to stand for. (Common sense, helping each other, and living together in peace).

And please don't forget to pay for this issue of the HomeCraft Personal Journal. We pay the writers and artists who produce the HPJ and, if you don't send us the registration payment, there will not be any future issues. The HPJ will go broke. That's the way it is with a business. No money coming in means no product goes out.

And what do you get if you send the registration payment for this issue? For $4.00 you are helping to pay for this issue and insure that there will be another issue. For $7.00 ($10.00 outside North America) you'll also get a copy of the next issue, mailed to you as soon as it is available. And keep in mind, that if you have a business and you'd like to tell lot's (make that lot's and lot's) of people about your product or service, the HPJ is the way to get the word out.

IN THE NEXT ISSUE...

  • Another editorial by Stanley Schmidt
  • Where This Man Has Gone Before - Frank returns to interview nude table dancers.
  • Helping Small Children Learn To Read
  • And more of your thoughts -- political and personal comments.
  • Plus more... (you'll love it!)

There's an order form at the end of this introduction. Just use the page print feature of the HPJ to get a printed copy. To do this, push PgDn until the order form appears on the screen. Then push F2 to display the menu. Now press #2 to print the current screen.

I hope you enjoy this issue, and find it to be fun and useful. And please, tell us what you think.

Robert Johnson
Editor, HomeCraft Personal Journal
