Prolog is famous as the first very high level programming language and for
its unique potential as a specification, artificial intelligence and
general purpose programming language.

Due to the growing number and economic importance of industrial applications
of Prolog based systems there is increasing need for specialized information
exchange catering to a discerning and critical audience in order to
discuss achievements, trends, needs and problems of commercial users.

INAP is a forum to discuss results and potential of the application of Prolog
in products, production, management, services and software engineering,
together with requirements, tools, programming techniques and standards
necessary to satisfy technological and economic constraints.

Authors are invited to submit full manuscripts (max 8 pages A4) or extended
abstracts in English or Japanese on applications of Prolog and related
topics including but not limited to:

- Prolog in services
- Prolog as R&D tool

Subject: Query: Machine Usable Dictionary Needed
Date: Sun, 28 May 1995 21:26:13 -1000

As you may know from postings I have made to this list over the last
couple of months, Derek Bickerton and I are developing a parser
based on a theory of syntax that he and I have been developing over
the last four years. We are about to purchase a machine usable
dictionary with approximately 70,000 entries for $2500. If anyone
could advise us whether or not that is our best bet, or where we might
find other dictionaries, we would appreciate hearing from you.

We are currently working with a dictionary of under 1000 words, so it
is imperative that we obtain a larger one, so we may begin working
with larger corpora. Toward that end we would also like to find out
which texts were used in past parsing competitions and where the
results of these competitions are published. We believe that with a
few weeks of work we should be able to modify a dictionary
sufficiently to allow us to begin experinmenting with texts that were
used in past parsing competitions.

Here are the specs the parser. It is based on a series of algorithms that
have been four years in the making, but the programming required to
create this parser has only taken 300 hours using C++ . There
areapproximately 3000 lines of code that take up 150k executable on
disk. About 100k of RAM is required to run the parser. 30k on disk is
required for a 300 word dictionary. An average sentence takes under
4 seconds to process on a 486 IBM compatible. Since this is only a
development version, we expect these numbers to change. To date, no
optimizations have occurred, and we expect to significantly shrink the
dictionary disk usage and the execution time.

ML 95 announces the availability of travel scholarships for students
without other means of support hoping to attend the conference.
Preference will be given to students presenting papers in the
conference or workshops. The deadline date for application is June 1,
1995. The earlier you apply the faster we will be able to respond to
your request.

Because these scholarships are funded by the International Computer
Science Institute (ICSI, Berkeley, CA), they are limited to nationals
of ICSI's sponsoring countries - Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
General scholarships will be announced separately.

Applicants should send the following items:
- A note describing the intended participation in the conference
and/or workshops,
- A brief curriculum vitae,
- A request for a specific amount of support (US dollars) and a
travel budget,
- A note from an advisor supporting the application and verifying
that no other source of funding is available for this purpose.

All materials should be sent to via email to Allison Mitchell
(mitchell@cs.ucdavis.edu). The note from advisor should be sent
directly from the advisor to mitchell@cs.ucdavis.edu.

First International Workshop on Applications of
NATURAL LANGUAGE to DATA BASES

(VERSAILLES, France, June 28-29th 1995)

PRESENTATION :

This workshop aims at bringing together researchers, industrial and potential
users, interested in various applications of natural language in the database
field. The integration of databases and natural language has been for a long
time a marginal topic for which only a few research has been done. For two
decades, consulting databases or getting answers in natural language remain a
long term objective for many users. This is nowadays an accessible convergent
point for which a lot of researchers are focusing on. This is mainly due to
the large progress of research in natural language and to the development of
new storage technologies which allow large semantic electronic dictionaries.

Each aspect of the life cycle of the information system may be improved by
using natural language techniques : database design ( specification, integra-
tion, conflicts resolution ), database querying, paraphrasing of data models
and query anwers, integrity specification and design validation. Beyond this
general use of natural language, different specific applications such as
dictionnaries or automatic indexing are also related to both domains of
natural language and databases. Papers which will be presented during this
workshop cover most of these topics.
