XLIPS V1.0-Beta
===============

WHAT IS IS

XLIPS is a public domain image processing package. It's main goal is
to provide an environment to develop own image processing/computer
vision modules. Therefore XLIPS does not (yet) provide the full range
of image processing functions (may be it will one day in the future).
However, it was designed to be very easy expanded. Many of the tools
that are useful during development of new algorithms and computer
vision methods have been implemented. It consists of 3 parts:

1) a library of I/O- and toolbox-functions which implement a object driven
data model for various image types and data formats. Automatic conversion
will take place (if reasonable) so that any program should be able to
read/write any image type/data type (with some exceptions which are not yet
implemented). In addition several "foreign" image formats are implemented
such as SunRaster, TIFF, MacPaint etc. All programs can directly interact
with the display module (write & read images from) by the mean of shared
memory (on local machine) or by TCP/IP.

2) a display module which does allow easy interactive handling of images of
any size (zoom & pan, contrast manipulation, comparing of to images by
flickering in one window, display of histogram, profiling, image composing,
annotation etc.).

The display module requires the OSF/Motif toolkit

The XLIPS display module does run up to now only on workstations with an
8-Bitplane framebuffer or accelerator. It does not yet run on 24-Bitplane
Truecolor workstations (This will hopefully change in the future).
However the display module simulates some Overlay functionality which can
save a lot of programming effort if e.g. the result of edge detection
can be displayed ontop of a grey valued image (using very simple calls -
You don't have to learn all this dreadful X11-stuff !!!). In addition 2
display modules on different machines connected by a TCP/Ip network can
be synchronized so that both parties will share one image window and the
cursor position of the partner will be displayed.

3) A set of common image processing functions such as sobel, generic
convolution, FFT, deconvolution etc.

Where to find:
=============

There is an anonymous ftp server

wopr.chemie.unibas.ch (131.152.102.8)

The source code is in the file "exlips.tar.Z", the binaries for
DEC Ultrix/RISC 4.2A can be found in "exlips-bin-dec-mips.tar.Z".

DOCUMENTATION

An introduction to the display module, library and a description of
the library functions can be found in the LaTeX-file "XlipsManual.tex"
or in the file "XlipsManual.ps". The directory "doc" also contains
man-pages for all image processing applications.

There are some undocumented features concerning networking. However
these things still are very experimental. You can use it, but on your
own risc...

The directory "pic" contains some sample images.

Subject: Digitizing hardware

I am currently doing research on a Sun SparcStation II with an 8
bit GX graphics board installed. We are looking for a good frame
grabber board that can be installed given this setup (Sparc II w/8
bit GX graphics board). If anyone else is doing image processing
on a similar platform your advice would greatly be appreciated as
to what king of image processing hardware works the best, etc.

We also are looking for a good color camera but would need
hardware (and software) from above to grab digitized frames into
memory. Also... if anyone knows of any good graphics libraries
that have drivers for the GX board I would also be interested in
hearing about that. (Information concerning real-time video
capturing and playback would also be a greatly appreciated)

So...in summary, if you are doing image processing and digitizing
on a Sun Sparc II w/ a GX board (or even a different system) and
are happy with your setup -- I would like to know more about it.
Also, information concerning JPEG, MPEG compression
hardware/software packages would also be appreciated.

Subject: Looking for Vision Software

Hi!

My group is working on a project that requires us to know both the
position and the orientation of several roving robots against a fairly
noisy background. We have linked a video camera into a 33 MHz, 486
microcomputer equipped with an AI Tech procolor+ frame grabber.

Are there any systems already out there that can deal with this problem?
I imagine that if I slap some neon stickers onto the top of the robots,
for example, that there is some algorithm that can calculate their positions
and orientations given a snapshot taken from above.

We're looking, ideally, for a library of C routines to do this. If anybody
out there could recommend suitable commercial or public domain software,
we'd be most grateful.

Thanks!

CALL FOR PAPERS

Special Issue of JOSA A on Physics-Based Vision

Papers are invited for a special issue of the Journal of the Optical
Society of America A on Physics-Based Machine Vision. The issue is
tentatively scheduled for publication in February 1994. The guest
editors for this special issue are Ramesh Jain of the University of
California, San Diego and Glenn Healey of the University of California,
Irvine.

In recent years, Machine Vision researchers have recognized the
importance of developing algorithms from increasingly sophisticated
physical models. Such an approach holds considerable promise since
the physics of image formation links the world that must be understood
to the image that is input to a vision system. Progress has been made
in modeling the properties of surfaces, illuminants, and sensors to
exploit phenomena such as color, shading, highlights, polarization,
and interreflection for image interpretation. The physical models have
led to new algorithms for segmenting images and recovering properties of
surfaces such as shape, spectral reflectance, and material.

Authors are encouraged to submit papers in all areas of physics-based
vision. Papers describing research with a strong experimental
component are especially welcome. Please submit four copies of each
paper by June 30, 1993 to one of the guest editors

Significant progress has been made recently in shape analysis using
neural networks and the energy minimization concept. Ablex Publishing
Corporation is planning a special volume on "Shape Analysis", scheduled
for this year.

This volume will be a part of "Progress in Neural Networks," an annual
book series reviewing research in modelling, analysis, design and
application of neural networks. The primary aim of this volume is to
present, in a single volume, the most important achievements made on
this important topic, which are otherwise scattered in diverse literature.

Authors are invited to submit original manuscripts detailing recent
progress. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to: shape modelling,
shape estimation, shape recovery, shape representation, shape matching,
surface reconstruction and surface decomposition. Research work utilizing
neural networks directly or based on energy minimization techniques such as
Markov random field, mean field annealing, simulated annealing, graduated
non-convexity algorithms and resistive networks are most welcome.

The paper should be tutorial in nature, self contained and preferably,
but not necessarily, about fifty double spaced pages in length. Please send
electronically (if you prefer, you can send a hardcopy to the address below)
an abstract and an outline msuk@ima.enst.fr by May 30, 1993. The full paper
