Hi all,

Here's my situation. Hope you all can help me on this.

The start-up company I work for is getting into alot of real-time
video processing on the PC platform. Currently we are working on
Pentium II 266 systems (with the 440FX Natoma chipset), 64MB RAM and
about 6GB of hard disk, running either/or Windows 95/ NT 4.0.

We are currently using a Matrox Meteor RGB Framegrabber. The problem
is that under NT, whatever programs I have running using the
framegrabber, the whole computer will just up and freeze for no
reason. This doesn't seem to happen under 95, but I haven't tested it
extensively yet. This even happens with the sample programs direct
from Matrox.

Now, after a back-and-forth email discussion with Matrox tech support,
I found out that the standard Meteor is not meant for either Pentium
Pro or Pentium II systems. For these systems, Matrox has a Meteor PPB
model. Unfortunately, this model is not scheduled to be released
until September this year (if it stays on schedule).

Now, I have also looked into Data Translation's new Mach series DT3153
PCI Color Framegrabber. But unfortunately, I have been unable to
contact their west coast sales rep to get more info.

So here's my question(s): Has anybody else run into the same problem
with a Matrox Meteor on a Pentium II system? Has anyone had any
experience with Data Translations Mach series framegrabbers? Or is
anyone using any other framegrabber that does real-time transfers to
system memory?

Hello,

I've written an implementation in mathematica which solves for the
three positional and three rotational exterior orientation parameters,
and three gcp coordinate adjustments. However I don't think I'm
handling the gcp adjustments correctly at each iteration. I'd
appreciate if I could have a look at someone else's implementation, in
any language. If anybody wants a copy of mine then get in touch.

Dear Friends,

Our group has been involved with neural morphometry and modeling using
image analysis techniques and would dearly appreciate to know about
the following possibilities:
1. Obtaining bitmap or traced (e.g. Eutectic) representations
of neural cells;
2. Receiving histological slides containing neural cells
marked for dendritic arborizations;
3. Receiving reprints of works dealing on neuromorphometry
and neural modeling.
The materials in 1 and 2 would be used for validating our techniques,
in such a way that it would also be nice if we were allowed to include
some of these data in eventual publications.

In addition to fully acknowledging the source of every data, we also
have to offer possibilities for collaboration. Our work include
analysis of spatial coverage through fractal dimensions, normal
fields, curvature, wavelets, and other new measures; multiscale
representation and characterization of neural cells; growing of 2D and
3D neural cells (by computer graphics and computer theoretical
approaches); classification of neural cells by using clustering,
statistics, and neural networks; linear an non-linear modeling and
simulation of neural structures; automatic and assisted extraction of
dendrograms; and Windows'95-based applicatives for visual inspection
of micrographs.

We would also be glad to supply reprints of the publications
below. Please use the number within "[]" in your request, and
be limited to about half-a-dozen items, since we rely on limited
resources.

integrate a set of images of a scene, taken with a calibrated camera
from several vantage points, to form a single representation that
includes information about visual direction, viewing distance, local

calculation of 3-D co-ordinates (photogrammetry). Research in the
group is on neurophysiological, psychophysical and computational
aspects of 3-D vision. The post would provide suitable training for a
candidate intending to pursue vision research at a doctoral level.

Amis (Advanced Multimedia Indexing and Searching) is a research
project funded by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research. The
purpose of the project is to make multimedia information accessible
through content-based retrieval, so that images, video, and audio can
be searched by means of a description or an example. Where Altavista
and Lycos are search engines for textual information on the Web, the
AMIS project will develop reliable and powerful searching mechanisms
for pictorial information. This project is a collaborative effort of
four universities in The Netherlands.

At Utrecht University, Department of Computer Science, there is a
vacancy for a post-doc position for 3 years. The post-doc will develop
reliable and efficient algorithms and datastructures for image retrieval
based on shape matching. Apart from theoretical analyses, also practical
implementations must be developed for the experimental verification
of the approach. The algorithms and datastructures will be tested on
a platform containing one million images.

The successful candidate is a PhD in computer science or related
discipline, and has experience in algorithmic geometry. The salary is
dependent on the applicant's experience, according to standard scales,

Research in computer vision, image processing, and databases is
converging towards handling multimedia content in databases. The
fundamental issues in the design of multimedia databases revolve
around fast and robust selection of multimedia data containing an
answer to a visual content query. The performance of
image-content-based access is affected by issues that impact the
design of an entire multimedia database system such as multimedia
feature extraction, data representation, organization, query
formulation and search. While automatic methods of database creation
are desirable, human intervention is preferred in acquiring
incremental specifications of a query and in providing user feedback
for evaluating the results of a query. New database design frameworks
are needed that combine visual information with more traditional
database information to respond to queries. Finally, realistic
evaluation criteria are needed for testing the efficiency and accuracy
of content-based access on image and video databases of realistic size
in domains of interest.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers in
computer vision, image processing, database and other communities,
addressing the above-mentioned issues towards developing robust and
computationally effective content-based search of multimedia
databases. Original papers are solicited that address topics for image
and video data that include the following:
1. Feature extraction and representation
2. Data organization
3. Query localization and recognition
4. Query formulation
5. Search and browsing
6. Database systems and their evaluation.

Submissions should be limited to a length of 15 double-spaced pages,

PRESENTATION

These last years have seen the multiplication of 3D images due to the
development and improvement of new acquisition devices (CT-Scan, MR,
3D ultrasound, confocal microscopy, seismic imagery, Cyberware range
laser, etc.) in several application fields (medicine, molecular
biology, geology, industry, paleontology, etc.). Such 3D images are
very large, difficult to interact with, and contain very complex
non-polyhedral structures. In order to obtain precise and reliable
results within a reasonable computation time, 3D image processing
algorithms are very often based on "models", i.e., simplified and
synthetic representations of complex entities.

This workshop will be an opportunity to gather people from different fields
(Computer Vision, Medical Imaging, Industry, etc.) to present their research
and results, to exchange ideas, and to discuss model-based 3D image analysis.
There are three main axes for the workshop:

IEA/AIE-98

The 11th International Conference on Industrial & Engineering
Applications of Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems, will take
place in Benicassim, Castellon (Spain), June 1-4, 1998. This annual
conference on applied Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge
Based Systems (KBS) in industrial and engineering environments was
first held in Tennessee and then subsequently in South Carolina,
Hawaii, Paderborn (Germany), Edinburgh, Austin (Texas),
Melbourne (Australia) and, finally, in Fukuoka (Japan'96) and Atlanta
('97). Now, it visits Spain for the first time.

On this occasion the conference will focus on methodological aspects
in the development of KBS's, knowledge modeling and hybrid techniques
that integrate the symbolic and connectionist perspectives in
industrial applications of AI. Papers will be accepted either for
oral presentation or for poster sessions. All papers will be
published in full length.

PROCEEDINGS The Proceedings will be published in time for
distribution at the conference as a volume of the Springer Lecture
Notes in Artificial Intelligence.

SCOPE

The IEA/AIE-98 Program Committee recognizes the complexity of the
real industrial world. To advance the applied perspective of AI we
need to examine the characteristics of the scenarios in which generic
tasks (such as identification, monitoring, diagnosis, prediction;
repair, control, supervision; design and planning) are found to be
adequate to the development of KBS's; then, more emphasis is needed
on methodology for the phases of development (knowledge modeling,
reduction process, development environments and prototype
implementation) and techniques (symbolic, connectionist or hybrid).
Finally, we need to evaluate the results using "real test-bed" and
refine again by means of learning. The essential aim of this
perspective for the 11th IEA/AIE conference is to reduce the distance
between the techniques for modeling and design of KBS's and the
engineering procedures normally employed in the analytic and
algorithmic perspectives of continuous and discrete systems theory.

CALL FOR INVITED SESSIONS

The Program Committee is soliciting proposals for invited sessions,
particularly in one of the above theme areas. Prospective organizers
should first contact the Program Co-Chair A.P. del Pobil at
iea98@titan.inf.uji.es, as soon as possible, providing a title for
the invited session and including a brief statement of the purpose
as well as names of prospective authors if available. Each invited
session will consist of four/five papers, if more papers are
submitted, then the session can be split into two ones.

The organizer will be responsible for inviting authors, selecting
the four papers and submitting four copies of each paper to
A.P. del Pobil by November 7, 1997, at the address below. The papers
will be reviewed by only one member of the Program Committee
(contributed papers are reviewed by at least two members). In case an
invited paper is finally not accepted, it will be replaced by a
relevant contributed paper. The organizer will be invited to serve as
Chair for the invited session at the conference and will be granted
a reduced registration fee. Information about current invited
sessions can be found at our web site.

PAPER SUBMISSION

Authors are invited to submit five copies of papers, double spaced,
written in English, of up to 10 pages, including figures, tables and
references. The format should be A4 or 8 1/2 X 11 inch paper, in a
Roman font, 12 point in size, with a printing area of 15.3 X 24.2 cm2
(6.0 X 9.5 sq. inches). If possible, please make use of the
latex/plaintex style file available in our WWW site. In addition,
one sheet must be attached including: title, authors' names, a list
of five keywords, the topic(s) under which the paper fits the best
(including its code), the preferred presentation (oral or poster),
and the corresponding author information (name, postal and e-mail
address, phone and fax numbers). This page must also be sent by
email to iea98@titan.inf.uji.es before November 7, 1997.

All received papers will be reviewed by the Programme Committee.
Papers will be accepted either for oral presentation or for poster
sessions. All papers will be published in full length. Referees will
be asked to nominate papers for a selected set of relevant
contributions to the field of applied AI. These papers will be
announced at the Conference and all those nominated will be
considered for a post-conference publication in the International
Journal of Applied Intelligence.

Overlooking the sea, the eternal Mediterranean, Castellon has many
treasures to offer including scenes that make it a destination which
is visited by many tourists throughout year. Benicassim boasts
beaches and impressive mountains, placid sand banks, mountain
waterfalls, shady ravines, and jagged peaks which glisten againts the

The Conference site, Hotel Intur Orange, is situated at 250 m. from
the best beach of Benicassim. It offers a new hotel conception with
excellent services and other free time options for your entertainment.

Located between Barcelona and Valencia, the province of Castellon
is bathed by the Mediterranean along its 112 km of coastline.
Castellon de la Plana, the capital, is located at 10 Km. from
Benicassim. It is a forward-looking city in which broad, modern
avenues and narrow streets and plazas from yesteryear combine to
form a special atmosphere. A walk around town is a pleasant
experience. On your stroll, you can find many pleasant surprises:
beautiful modernist buildings, modern shops, shady parks and
important Gothic and Renaissance monuments. With its deep cultural
roots, Castellon de la Plana celebrates its history with fiestas and
annual events throughout the year. A look towards the sea confirms
the Mediterranean style of Castellon de la Plana. Its carefully
attended beaches lay on both sides of the port through which a large
amount of exports are shipped each year, accounting for a substantial
part of the provincial economy, based mainly on ceramic tile
manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. The mild climate of the
coastal regions owes much to the sea and the protection from
cold northwest winds provided by the mountains. These two factors
have a decisive influence on the city's mean annual temperature
of 170C., enabling outdoor activities to be practised throughout
the year.

Motion-based recognition deals with the recognition of an object and
or its motion based on motion in a sequence of images. In this
approach, a sequence containing a large number of frames is used to
extract motion information.
The advantage is that a longer sequence leads to recognition of
higher level motions, like walking or running, which consist of a
complex and coordinated series of events Unlike much previous research
in motion, this approach does not require explicit reconstruction of
shape from the images prior to recognition.

This book provides the state of art in in this rapidly growing area.
It consists of a collection of invited chapters by leading researchers
in the world covering various aspects of motion-based recognition
including: lipreading, gesture recognition, facial expression
recognition, cyclic motion detection, and activity recognition.
