Far from illiterate, Linda. But cogent, as always.

I've worked as an editor for 10 years -- hell, I read Roswell when it was on
submission to The Literary Guild from the publisher, many long years ago.
And while I'm forced to agree that many readers will buy off on outlandish
claims backed by wild leaps of logic or surmise, the thought still depresses
me and it's no excuse to DO it. Dammit.

The most entrancing and persuasive thing in the world is a well-written,
well-structured, well-researched, logically flowing arguement. An arguement
that includes sources of information, explains the rationale for
associations and conclusions, and anticipates and addresses criticisms on
the basis of their facts & claims -- and not in an ad hominem attack on the
critic.

So I think the lady quoted in the message has a point. Granted, there's
nothing more tiresome than a monomaniacal copyeditor who insists on smooth
flow and pretty transitions between paragraphs and ignores the facts,
fallacies & flawed logic (or the mind-bending truth & epiphanies) of
whatever that copyeditor is working on at the time. But in my experience,
you can't do without someone like that, no matter how good your case. And
if you listen to them (not about everything they object to -- just about how
well your point is getting across), you're always better off.

I wish we had more...

Best,
Clark

That's exactly what Rod and I saw, Stars and Small aircraft.

I had said that I expected about 90% of the reports to be of identifiable
objects, I figure it's closer to 95-99% now after going up there and talking
to those people and then going out and viewing some of the objects. I had
hoped we would do better but I will type up a report shortly.

We are again seeing local reports of "lights in the skies" here in
0klahoma, this time out in the east of the state. We earlier had
reports out of the southeast, along the Arkansas/0klahoma border right
after the Russian sighting.
Another unrelated news item I saw on a CNN feed ( sat/dish F2-2 )
was a guy with the geophysical survey who claimed to have predicted the
California earthquake to within 5 days. He was in danger of losing his
job over it and pretty self-righteous about it all. His premise was
that if animals are disquieted/upset by impending earthquakes, they
might run away. He looked up records pertaining to missing animals and
domestic pets to see if there was an increase of runaways, which seems
reasonable to me. He was on camera and predicting another earthquake
in that region somewhere between Nov. 10-17 so we'll have to wait and
see on that report.
I'm more in favor of the earthquake light phenomena, maybe that's what
we're seeing out here in 0klahoma....

Subject: Miami Meeting

Miami 10-27-89

A meeting took place Friday, the 27th of October at the Civil Defense
headquarters located in Miami Oklahoma. It's purpose was to gather and
discuss information obtained from individuals in Miami and surrounding towns
that had reported a "UFO sighting". Interviews were conducted by Bill Pitts
from the New Project Bluebook, a privately funded organization, Bryon Smith
from Ft. Smith Arkansas, and myself. Pam Keys from the Miami Herald and a
reporter from the Joplin Globe also attended and represented the news media.
Jim Green, Civil Defense Director, kindly allowed us the use of the civil
defense building as a site for conducting the interviews.

With assistance from civil defense personnel and the Miami Police Department,
we were able to obtain a list of individuals that reported such sightings. We
contacted as many of these people as possible and asked them if they would
drop by to give us a first hand account of the sightings. In all, the list
contained the names of four law enforcement personnel, including one from the
sherrif's department and two civil defense personnel.

Response was good and we gained a lot of information about each sighting by
permitting each observer to fill out a questionnaire and draw a picture of
what they had seen. Bill Pitts talked with most of these individuals and
obtained more detailed information. Pam Keys observed an object over the
Miami area and had taken 35mm photos of the object as it hovered and moved in
the sky. A few of the Miami Police officers saw these objects also. Reports
were taken from people who lived in Miami, Picher, Welch and Commerce
Oklahoma. According to reports, two officers in Commerce, Bob Bains, Police
Chief and Mike Kelly, Assistant Chief, were said to have looked at "strange"
objects through a telescope one evening.

Some of the reports were confirmed to have been civilian aircraft flying at
low level and are currently under investigation by the Miami Police. Other
reports were so vague that I feel as though they may surely have seen a planet
such as Venus or possibly a Star that qualifies as a Pulsar. Pulsars are
known to change colors emitting a red/green/blue light at different times.
Some of these Pulsars can appear very close in the fall night sky. Most
reports were described as bright lights in the sky, usually changing colors
from a bright white light to a red and/or green and then back to a bright
white again.

One report described a craft of some sort landing on a road near a field,
flattening the weeds where it landed. Bill Pitts and a few civil defense
personnel drove to the site for further investigation. Some of the objects
that were close to the observers and were described as a triangular shaped
object of metallic origin that had red green and dim/bright white lights along
the sides of the triangle. Night photos taken by Pam Keys supported the
description of a triangular object, although it was quite a distance away when
the photos were taken. One person brought some photos taken that had very
detailed images of multiple objects. He stated that Paramount Studios
currently had the negatives. These pictures were by far the most interesting
data that I had an opportunity to see.

I talked with one lady that stated she had been dozing when a swishing sound
moved over her house, woke her up and scared her. She has a medical condition
that requires she be on an oxygen machine. At the time this noise occurred,
she states that her oxygen machine went off and a touch lamp was turned on
without her intervention. She said that she arose from bed and looked out the
window and saw something hovering just above the trees. The object turned
from Bright white to pink then red & back to white as it moved back and forth.
She watched this for about 30 minutes before returning to bed.

One night, while Pam Keys was riding as a passenger in a car, she states that
she observed a triangular shaped object drop from the sky and come within a
very close distance from the vehicle. Unfortunately, she did not have her
camera with her at the time.

One officer was reported to have seen an object that was close enough to
determine an outline which was described as a fuselage. Another observer I
talked with informed me she watched a formation of lights in the shape of a W
hover in the sky over Picher Ok for about two hours. During this time, her
house pets seemed very upset and scared and seemed to beg for attention. The
TV show Hard Copy had contacted her and was planning to come to the area for a
report.

Around 7:30pm, civil defense personnel, Bill Pitts, Bryon Smith, Pam Keys,
myself and others broke into small groups and drove out to different "hot
spots"
where these sightings had occurred in the hopes that we could see
something extraordinary. Bill brought with him some surveillance equipment
which could be used in the event of a sighting. We all looked to the sky
until about 9:00pm, as this period of time was the most common time for
sightings. I personally observed many aircraft flying at high altitude. Bryon
and myself observed a few moving objects at high altitude, but were unable to
confirm or deny that they were aircraft. A few of them seemed to have a red
light at the front and a white light at each side, but some distance back. I
find it most unusual that an aircraft would have a red light in the front, but
not entirely impossible. No balls of fire or triangular objects were seen by
any of the groups.

Before leaving, I talked with one reporter and asked if there was evidence of
any Satanic events in the area. I was told that there was rather a large
group of worshipers in the Picher area. According to reports, the Police
Dept. had found a baby in a plastic bag that had been mutilated. It was never
determined who the parents were.

On a brighter (excuse the pun) side ... On the way back into town, my
attention was focused away from the sky by a lighted portable sign that said:
UFO's .. Let us insure you. When I commented about the sign, I was told that
there was a gas station at the edge of town that had a similar sign saying
that a UFO had bought gas there.
