Pyramids are present all over the world: from Egypt up to the Pole!

It seems that for a relatively long time, and in a very ancient era, humans have definitely loved pyramid-shaped structures, which seem to be present in every corner of planet Earth. Here is a review of the lesser-known and more disconcerting ones.

In 2013 was announced the discovery of an underwater pyramid in the waters of the Azores Islands. Then, some photographs taken at the South Pole suggest the existence of mysterious pyramidal-shape structures under the ice of Antarctica.

The site of Ganung Padang, Indonesia, has hill that could be the oldest pyramid on the planet, dating back more than 9 thousand years ago.

Finally, a group of explorers came into contact with pyramidal structures buried in the vegetation of the Amazon forest of Ecuador. The complex could be an ancient lost city of Giants.

Despite these recent discoveries, we know nothing about the ancient civilizations that build all these pyramidal constructions, structures that seem to be present in every corner of planet Earth.

Here is a review of the lesser-known and more disconcerting ones.

I will not visit exotic lands or sand deserts, under which constructions could be hidden, mysterious guardians of unimaginable secrets; on the contrary, after a short and necessary excursion to Mauritius, I will travel through the regions of Europe.

The Pyramids of Guimar

On the east coast of the island of Tenerife, in the town of Guimar, there are six stepped pyramid structures on five levels, very similar to those of the Mayans and Aztecs of Mexico.

For a long time, it was thought that these pyramids were random constructions made by local farmers who found stones and piled them up. Only in 1991, thanks to Thor Heyerdahl, was it discovered that these pyramids were anything but simple piles of stones.

The signs of work on the boulders and of the soil being worked before installation were clearly visible. Furthermore, the used stones are not common stones, like those in the nearby fields, but of volcanic origin and the pyramids have an astronomical orientation.

On June 21st, the summer solstice, a double sunset can be observed from the platform of the highest pyramid as the sun disappears behind a mountain to reappear after a while and disappear again, definitively, behind another mountain. All the pyramids, on the western side, have a staircase by climbing which it is possible to follow the sun on the day of the winter solstice, December 21st.

Despite Heyerdahl's studies, the dating of the Guimar's pyramids remains a mystery, as does the purpose of their construction. Furthermore, no one knows who built them. The mystery comes from the fact that the Guanches, the ancient populations of the Canary Islands, were not an evolved people at all, on the contrary. They lived in caves, supported themselves by herding and wore clothing made from goatskin. When the colonization of the Canary Islands by the Spanish began, the Guanches were the only European population still stuck in the Stone Age. How could have they built pyramids so sophisticated and so similar to those found in Egypt, Mesopotamia and South America?

The Pyramids of Plaine Magnien

In the plain of Plaine Magnien, in Mauritius, the presence of seven step pyramids has been reported, erected using stones - mostly of volcanic origin - without the use of mortar; pyramids that at most reach twelve meters in height.

It seems that three buildings located near the airport appear to be aligned with the stars of Orion's belt like the Egyptian ones.

Similarly to the pyramids of Guimar, that have the same characteristics, the Pyramids of Plaine Magnien should be aligned with the solstices; in particular one of them with the summer one which occurs in the southern hemisphere, coincidentally, on December 21st. Given the land's conformation, a double sunset would be observed, a phenomenon also observed in Guimar's pyramids in Tenerife.

Obviously, everything must be verified further and it will not be easy, given that for the locals these are not ancient pyramids, but rather piles of stones created only to make the fields cultivable. The current cultivation is that of sugar cane and the farmers are afraid that their lands will be declared archaeological zones and no longer agricultural, with all that this entails.

It seems that under the Great Britain's rule some pyramids were declared historical monuments; once Mauritius gained its independence and felt into disuse.

The sugar cane which, with its height can reach up to five meters, has hidden some of these "monuments" over time. On the subject of historical assets, we must add the inaction of the government most inclined, for economic reasons, to favor the profitable production of sugar cane.

Beyond the economic-political issues of the territory, on the island there are also huge and long stone's wall up to three meters wide, used today to guard grazing animals. Obstacles that make exploration of the territory very difficult due to the opposition of the owners.

Another strange curiosity is the presence in some stones of circular holes, smooth and about 30 centimeters deep which recall those found on the stones of the quarries of Aswan, in Egypt. Also in this case the mystery of how, when and by whom they were made remains.

Pyramids in Sevastopol

2002 was the year of the discovery of a group of buildings very similar to those present on the Giza plateau, near Sevastopol, a fortified city in Crimea, in Ukraine, a land of great events and bloody battles, conquered after a long siege by the Anglo-French troops in 1855 and by the Germans in 1942. The area returned to Soviet dominion in 1944, becoming the largest and most important military port on the Black Sea.

Today "Sevastopol", as the Russians call it, safe shelter for the atomic submarines of the Ukrainian fleet, is back in the spotlight after a long silence, but not for military reasons, but rather following the fortuitous discovery of 37 completely buried pyramids.

A strange twist of fate reveals the secret during water research directed by the retired ship captain Vitalij Anatoljevic Gokh, expert in technical sciences and underground surveys, inventor of a device useful in identifying water sources, former teacher at the school of engineering, with the task of preparing nuclear submarine officers.

The researchers engaged in the excavation came across an extensive smooth surface of limestone. From the news of that time we learn that the technicians managed to penetrate inside, where domed structures and strange triangular slabs appear to have been seen. Measurements of the construction were taken and it was verified that "there are traces of mortar in the joints between the stone blocks".

The discovery distracted the researchers from what was the primary objective and the enthusiasm pushed the team to inspect the surrounding area; a stretch of fifty kilometers between Foros and Khersones, thus ascertaining the existence of six other underground pyramids, aligned along the coast of the Black Sea, which, together with the first, form an almost regular rhombus and are all aligned like the Egyptian ones and Colombian. But unlike these these structures have three sides and not four, and are more modest in height. The height varies from 35 to 45 meters, with a base of 72 meters on each side.

But what is the meaning of these monuments? And the location, which seems anything but random? How old do they are? For the moment, only hypotheses can be made, although plausible. The pyramids were originally raised above the earth's surface and would have ended up under accumulations of soil following natural processes. According to Gokh, the monuments should be attributed to a civilization contemporary to the Egyptian one, which lived in the eastern Mediterranean.

Lugansk pyramids

In 2006 was reported the discovery of gigantic pyramids in the Lugansk area of Ukraine. They would have emerged, so to speak, from the ground since only the upper parts of the buildings were discovered. The rest was completely underground.

The stones at the foundation of the structure appear to resemble the Mayan and Aztec ziggurats of South America. According to scientists, it would have taken ten years to review them in their entirety. Since that announcement we have had no further news on the matter.

Pyramids in Greece

Although never highlighted, the Greek territory also has 16 pyramids, of which the best known and most important is that of Hellinikon, in Argolis, near the sources of Kephalari. It appears as a tower of 7 and 9 meters, with a slope of 60° and 3.5 meters in height, made up of large trapezoidal blocks of gray stone, of controversial dating.

Pyramid of Arzon

Same method for the construction of the pyramid of Arzon, on the Petit Mont overlooking the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany; over 7 meters high, made up of 10,000 cubic meters of dry-laid stones, like those of the Canary Islands; an irregularly shaped stepped structure dating back to the Neolithic period.

Pyramids in Bosnia

It was October 2005 when astonishing news appeared in the Bosnian newspaper Dnevni Avaz: the first European pyramid had been discovered! Incredible, but where? In Bosnia, in the Visoko valley, a small town of 17,000 inhabitants located about thirty kilometers north of Sarajevo. And it's not even a small and insignificant pyramid, on the contrary... 220 meters high and with base sides of over 360 meters, it is built of sandstone blocks which would indicate the presence of an advanced civilization in a region which is certainly not famous for its archaeological beauty. The pyramid would have gone unnoticed until now because covered by earth and vegetation which over time hid it making the structure look like a simple hill with a curious shape, the Visocina Hill.

There would even be three pyramids, placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle. The two new constructions were immediately christened "Pyramid of the Moon" and "Pyramid of the Dragon", while rumors spread of the existence of other pyramids not yet discovered. According to the Bosnian politician Sulejman Tihic there are as many as nine pyramids and Osmanagic declares that there are probably others in Croatia.

The most disconcerting news that challenge the dating of the beginning of the civilizations is given by the fact that during excavations fossil shells were found inside the pyramid; their presence is archaeological proof of how the entire structure was once submerged by water.

This circumstance could have been created, according to experts, only about 12,000 years ago, due to the melting of the ice, which caused an enormous destructive wave. The Bosnia's pyramids are therefore the oldest pyramids in the world as well as the largest? or do we have to backdate the others?

But to further deepen the mystery, there are weighty clues that seem to directly connect the ancient inhabitants of the area to those who first populated Central America. In fact, again in Bosnia, near the town of Banja Luka, artificial spheres of polished granite of various sizes were found, which closely resemble those discovered in Costa Rica and whose origin and purpose are not exactly known.

Is it then possible that a lost and highly advanced civilization could have expanded from Europe to the Americas thousands of years before Columbus?

Pyramids in China

The history of the Chinese pyramids begins in 1947, when Colonel Maurice Sheehan photographed from an airplane - a DC3 flying over China - what appeared to be a pyramid. His description was published in the New York Times in March of the same year.

If we trust his testimony, this pyramid had a height of approximately 300 meters while its sides measured 450 meters. Chinese authorities shortly reacts: in a press release published by the Associated Press news agency it was declared that the alleged existence of the pyramid was in no way supported by evidence.

This official statement discredited Sheehan's claims, and most researchers believed that the colonel had exaggerated in his interpretation of the photographs he had taken in flight.

The Gympie's pyramid is located in the area of Queensland, Australia. The structure has been the subject of studies, some hypothesizing that it was built by an unknown civilization or by very ancient civilizations: Egyptians, South Americans, Chinese.

Rex Gilroy, who discovered the Pyramids in 1975, claimed that “Gympie” was a site created by Egyptians for mining operations with the aim of reaching the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. In his article on the subject, Anthony G. Wheeler writes: “It appears to be a terraced hill.”

Pyramids in Italy

Surprisingly, there are pyramids also in Italy, but here the "pyramids" do not all appear as "piles dry stones". In Campania, in the area between the provinces of Caserta and Benevento, there are three large pyramids which due to their size resemble real hills.

One pyramid rises near Sant'Agata dei Goti, another near Moiano and yet another near Caiazzo. All belonged to the most hidden tradition of the area for millennia and are still the subject of interest by some local esoteric communities even today.

After the discovery of the pyramids of Visoko, which occurred in Bosnia, the Italian pyramids have been brought back to the light of contemporary history, albeit with many controversies and various secrets on the part of the inhabitants of the area.

The first to have been "officially" discovered was that of Sant'Agata dei Goti, known as "Ariella hill". It was discovered by chance in September 2008 by Leonardo B. Romano who, noticing the similarity with the Bosnian ones, reported it to the Italian media.

It is unknown which ancient civilization may have been built them. The area has been inhabited in several historical periods by various populations. But none of these, as far as we know, has ever created constructions of this kind. We can cite the Oscans, the Ausones and the Samnites, of Indo-European origin, and therefore the Etruscans who inhabited Campania from the second millennium BC. Then the Greeks who arrived and subsequently colonized these areas in the sixth century, where they founded Cuma, the first city center of current Naples.

After the three Samnite wars, 343-290 BC, these lands were then occupied by the Romans, who founded several colonies such as present-day Pozzuoli. At the end of the 5th century AD the Lombards finally arrived. It is believed that none of these cultures could have built pyramids of that size. It is probably necessary to refer to an unknown civilization, even more ancient and technologically advanced than those mentioned. Furthermore we need to go back in time to at least 5-10,000 years BC.

Around the pyramid of Sant'Agata dei Goti, large spherical stones of various sizes were found. The stones appear similar to those discovered near the Bosnian pyramids of Visoko and that of Monte D'Accoddi in Sardinia. Some of these stone spheres have been stolen by unknown persons. However, others remain to testify their enigmatic presence, well protected by the locals who hide them in secret places, perhaps knowing the value they represent.

Near Caiazzo, near the pyramid of the same name, there are remains of megalithic walls which are now the foundations of a castle, vestiges of the ancient Osci civilization which was based precisely in these places.
