Ancient terrestrial sites show important astronomical configurations

Astro-archaeology studies the megalithic monuments which are present in Europe, Africa and America, the most famous of which is certainly Stonehenge. The hypothesis underlying it is that the structure of megaliths, their size and shape have a relationship with the position of celestial bodies and the configuration of the Earth. They are the unique testimony of an ancient astronomical knowledge rich in truths perhaps defeated by history.

Aztecs, Toltecs, Olmecs, Incas, Maya: Central and South America are an uninterrupted mosaic of lost realms, of abandoned cities and vanished civilizations, of ruins that left even the Spanish conquistadors breathless.

Large stepped pyramids, intricate bas-reliefs, sophisticated astronomical calendars, complex mummification rites characterize these ancient cultures and seem to almost magically take us back to the Mesopotamia and Egypt of thousands of years ago, showing us real technological miracles.

According to Ancient Astronaut theorists, all these findings are clues of a contact that occurred thousands of years ago between our ancestors and extraterrestrial travelers.

But if these are evidences of the arrival of cosmic travelers on Earth, can there be other evidence elsewhere, in some remote corner of the Solar System?

In the Ancient Mayan city of Teotihuacán, Mexico, evidence suggests that ancient cultures possessed incredibly accurate knowledge of our neighboring planets. Some scholars have even interpreted the number and orientation of its pyramids as a perfect reflection of our Solar System.

Along the Avenida de los Muertos (The Avenue of the Dead) the pyramids would be aligned in such a way as to recreate the perfect position of each orbit of each planet in our Solar System. Perhaps, it is significant that the Great Pyramid of the Sun is positioned at the center of the other structures, reflecting the fact that the Sun is at the center of our Solar System and that the planets revolve around it.

This would suggest that it was already a known fact that the Sun was the center of planetary motion, something that Western science discovered much later. But how could the architects of Teotihuacán know, even at the time, that the planets orbit around the Sun?

Classical archaeologists dismiss this clue as a mere coincidence. But if we go to the other side of the planet, to Stonehenge, we find another site much older than the city of Teotihuacán. Observing the site from above, you notice that the structure is composed of a series of concentric circles and the circles correspond exactly with the orbits of all the planets in our solar system.

Therefore, we have two places on Earth that have the same characteristic.

In recent years, Stonehenge has also been interpreted by some archaeologists as a kind of astronomical calendar that could be used to calculate events such as solar eclipses. But if this were true, whoever lined up these enormous boulders in the barren English landscape would have had to have precise astronomical knowledge of the Sun's path.

The Temples of Tikal

Built between the 6th and 9th centuries, the stone temples of Tikal, the largest of the ancient Mayan cities, tower more than 60 meters above Guatemala's rainforest. Tikal is home to one of the largest excavations in the world, where thousands of structures are still buried beneath the jungle.

According to most scientists, the Tikal pyramids played an essential role in the development of the Mayan Calendar. By drawing lines from the highest points of the structures, ancient astronomers could precisely define the most important dates of the year such as an equinox or solstice.

But what excites Ancient Astronaut theorists is how the layout of Tikal's pyramids exactly mirrors the star map of the Pleiades constellation in the sky. The view of the structures from above almost exactly reflects the alignment of the constellation and, more interestingly, this same configuration found in Tikal was noticed in another place very, very distant.

On Mars, in the region known as Cydonia – the site of the famous face of Mars – a group of rock formations was discovered that almost perfectly replicates the pattern of the pyramids of Tikal.

Three distinct places, a single model. Coincidence or design? The legends and myths surrounding Tikal all speak of a time when the gods mingled and came into contact with our ancestors.

Thus, Tikal may also have been built as a message to future generations to tell them that, long ago, travelers from another world visited us. But why were ancient populations so focused on the sky and the stars? Were they waiting for something to happen? Or maybe something, or someone, would return?
