Subject: A name for our WAD

I don't know about the rest of you, but I really think we need a name for
ths thing!

Everyone should send me an e-mail with a proposed name for the project.
This will not be the final name, we will decide on that when the theme and
everything becomes defined. I will take suggestions for a week (maybe I
should take them for two weeks?). When that's done, I will post a meessage
listing the names, and you can all then send me your vote. Does this sound
good?

E-mail me at setc@together.net

BTW - I'm going to start the web page tonight. There should be something
there tomorrow (Wednesday, EST), however incomplete and embarrassing it may be!

Here is a list of items that I plan to include on the web page:

- - list of contributors broken down be area of interest - mailto links for
each - note that, at this time, Tom is still collecting names for
contributors, we will let everyone know when you can send contribution
requests to me instead, to be included in the page.
- - list of proposed themes, mailto links for person who proposed it
- - General comments - which of doom one or two, heretic etc.
- - archives of messages on topic?
- - links to FTP areas for related files, graphics, sounds, lvels
utils, etc..
- - proposed names
- - deadlines for theme submission, name submission, etc.
- - vote results on submitted themes, names
- - links to other Doom related WWW pages
- - Misc. section

Any suggestions for the content of my page are greatly appreciated.

The URL for the page will be:

http://together.net/~setc/public/thewad.html

My home page will be at:

http://together.net/~setc/index.html

On that topic, does anyone know if it is illegal for me to use graphics cut
out of Doom screen shots on my web pages? Since American McGee is in on
this, maybe it's OK. I will e-mail id about this (what are the chances
he'll respond?) Please let me know! Until I find out for sure, I won't use
any graphics.

Talk to you all soon!

DOOM is certainly the engine we want to use for this. Heretic just
doesn't have the same atmosphere. Remember, this is supposed to be a
continuation of the original theme. Plus, don't you think DOOM deserves it?

There is no improved engine. 27 levels ain't so different from 32, and
the episode screens are rather nice. So it's one weapon. I'm inclined to
say it should be for DooM I, a game many more people on the Internet have.

Tell ya what. I've got a pretty large collection of sound effects and
musics--would you like me to send you some? (Let's decide on the format
I can send them in as soon as we decide on the theme...I throw my `vote'
in for the mutated-humans theme, myself.)

Yeah, but in my opinion, you can't get the same feeling in Heretic that
you do in DOOM(2) while playing deathmatch. There's an unprecedented
feeling of joy and a rush of testosterone when you blow someone away with
a double barreled shotgun, that you simply can't get with some fantasy
weapon. Also, the textures in Heretic are extremely weak, and the
characters blend into the walls.

Remember here that we're (well, I'm not in the project, but nevertheless)
we're talking a whole new game here. We can't use Doom textures anyway,
since id's got the copyright on 'em, so if we're re-drawing all the
walls, monsters, objects, fonts, sprites etc, and doing new music and
sound, why not use the extended engine of Heretic. ONly problems I can
see are the fact that not everybody has registered Htic (I know I
haven't) and the fact that we don't have as much experience with the engine.

Is this true? I know many a time when playing Heretic, those damn yellow
mummy looking guys shoot flamming skulls at me that chase me all around
the board. Around corners, down hallways, you name it.
