Populous - front cover PC MS-DOS
POPULOUS is proof that the ideal computer game is less the product of fantastic graphics, incredible screen resolution, and dynamite gameplay than the result of just the right combination of these three elements. This review is based on the Amiga version; IBM-PC and Atari ST version notes follow, along with data disk notes for THE PROMISED LANDS. One of the most original computer games ever released, POPULOUS begs classification. I'd label it a strategy game with dynamic real-time elements: It's different from chess, in that you can take your time to figure out a move; but it's similar to chess, in that you must be sure to dev...

RAMBO III

Rambo III front cover for Atari computer
RAMBO III is a strategy/arcade game from Ocean Software and Taito. It offers excellent graphics and animation, three missions, joystick and mouse control, and copy protection. The color-only Atari ST version is the basis of this review. Like the film of the same name and number, RAMBO III concerns the capture and imprisonment of Colonel Trautman, Rambo's friend and mentor. The goal of the game is to find the Colonel, release him, and escape. While this is easier said than done (even for Rambo), you'll find yourself stuck in an enjoyably frustrating and wonderfully realized world. Taito's press release states that RAMBO III...

REEL FISH'N

REEL FISHN (Gone Fishn) Atari ST front cover
REEL FISH'N (formerly GONE FISH'N) from Interstel and Electronic Arts is a bass fishing simulation written by Roger Damon, a designer who knows a few things about simulations: FIELD OF FIRE, PANZER GRENADIER, NAM, and WARGAME CONSTRUCTION SET. This review is based on the Atari ST version; Amiga and IBM-PC version notes follow. If you've never sat in a boat for long hours in the middle of summer, if you've never been hounded mercilessly by armies of insects, if you've never been able to babble about "the one that got away," don't feel left out: REEL FISH'N has everything except the bugs. You are a successful sma...

Trump Castle: The Ultimate Casino Gambling Simulation - front cover PC MS-DOS
Open the door to a casino anywhere in the world and it's the same: Bright lights and bells accompany regular slot machine payoffs, a collective roar from the craps table congratulates a player on a hot dice roll, and the snap of a fresh deck of cards signals a new hand in play at the blackjack table. Everyone's chasing that elusive pot of gold -- hoping the next deal, the next roll of the dice, the next pull of the handle will bring instant fortune. The sense of excitement is contagious, and once inside the doors, the outside world seems very far away. Several computer game publishers have attempted to recreate this world for the ...

Shinobi

Shinobi front cover PC MS-DOS
Welcome to SHINOBI, where you will rely on mastery, might, magic, and disappointment throughout the game. Yes, SHINOBI is one of those games that looks great on the outside, and terrible on the inside. When I first received my review copy, I was thrilled with the screen shots on the back of the box; I thought the game was really going to be good, maybe even an ultimate classic. This is not the case. I promptly put the disk in the drive and started playing the worst arcade game I've seen in along time. Something must be wrong, I thought. I compared the back of the box to the screen. It doesn't even look like the same game. (This re...

Overrun! front cover for the Commodore 64
OVERRUN! is a tactical simulation of small unit actions from Gary Grigsby (MECH BRIGADE, PANZER STRIKE!, TYPHOON OF STEEL) and Strategic Simulations. This advanced-level program offers both past and future scenarios, Middle Eastern and European terrain sets, strategic and tactical maps, a campaign game, menu control, a save-game option, a construction set editor, and no copy protection. This review is based on the Apple II version; Commodore 64/128 version notes follow. OVERRUN! uses a modified version of the play system first seen in PANZER STRIKE! and TYPHOON OF STEEL. Since some of OVERRUN!'s scenarios concern possible future c...

Red Baron front cover PC MS-DOS
It's early morning. I can see the sun rising over the horizon as I look out the left side of my Eindekker's cockpit. I'm leader on this flight, and my two wingmen are flying in formation behind me. I look at my map, and then at the ground below, and locate a landmark that tells me we're right on course. The sky brightens a little as the sun clears the horizon. I spot our targets: two British observation balloons near the trenches. I signal my wingmen to attack as I head for the nearest balloon. AA fire erupts around us. As I dive on the first balloon, the terrified observer jumps from the basket, his chute popping open jus...

Dragon Lord front cover PC MS-DOS
In its continuing effort to bring a range of European games to the American market via its budget Spotlight series, Cinemaware has hit upon one of the most original strategy games to be released in England during 1990. DRAGON LORD combines a completely unique spell-creating system, a small-scale strategy game, and a simple but enjoyable arcade sub-game into a gaming experience unlike most others you'll encounter. There are flaws to the design, but they are far outweighed by the pleasure and challenge the game presents. (This review is based on the Amiga version.) DRAGON LORD begins with a beautifully-drawn opening landscape shot, repl...

Pool of Radiance

Pool of Radiance front cover PC MS-DOS
SSI, which has achieved success in the computer role-playing games market with QUESTRON, PHANTASIE, and WIZARD'S CROWN, has now teamed with TSR, Inc. to produce POOL OF RADIANCE , the first CRPG based on TSR's popular ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (AD&D) system. Included in the attractive gold box along with the game disks, are a manual, an Adventurers Journal containing game information, history, and background material, and a code wheel. The wheel serves, among other things, as copy protection (the disks are otherwise not protected). The Commodore 64/128 version, upon which this review is based, uses four double-sided ...

Twilights Ransom front cover Macintosh
If you're in the mood for a text adventure in which the map's the thing and a rose by any other name will _not_ be recognized (let alone smell as sweet), then TWILIGHT'S RANSOM may appeal to you. The game comes from Paragon Software (an affiliated label of Electronic Arts), a company attempting to demonstrate its versatility by releasing programs in a variety of genres. During the past few months, they've released WIZARD WARS, a dungeons-and-dragons computer role-playing game; ALIEN MINDS, a science-fiction CRPG/mystery; and now, TWILIGHT'S RANSOM, a text mystery with a contemporary setting. (This review is based o...
