Injuries that will be produced by a nuclear explosion
This report concerns the types of injuries that will be produced by a nuclear explosion. The first topic to be covered will be scales of destruction, or how different sizes of bombs will produce different mixes of injuries and at what ranges. This part has a little math and geometry in it but is only five minutes long. Don't go to sleep yet! The second topic will be types and ranges of injuries caused by the blast portion of the bomb. This will cover injuries caused strictly by the over-pressure, throwing the body from the static pressure, injuries from hurled objects, and injuries from collapsing buildings. The third topic will cover...

Fishing Survival Kit
The "Fishing Survival Kit", a small lightweight fishing kit you can make yourself and put in your backpocket. It consists of 1-400 yd spool of 8 lb fishing line, a small quantity of the 3 smallest leadhead jig sizes in different assortments of colors (about 5 of each), plastic jig bodies for the jigs for when live bait is unattainable, the smallest "Swiss Army" 5 function pocketknife (actually, a keyring knife), some needles, some "strike Anywhere" matches, a small machine bolt and wingnut, and a electrical junction box cover (round). What you do, is take the spool of line, and remove the paper from one side... this exposes the voids on t...

Does anyone reading this know how to start a new User group to focus on poison ivy? This is a running thread in ten current News Groups (see above cc-list). Sure seems like poison ivy is a common concern to many people, in various News Groups! Previously thinking of myself immune, I‚ve been humbled and write this while quite incapacitated by poison ivy! As I‚m crawling the walls with my new found source of unrelenting itching, I first thought of how burn victims must feel. Then I reached out to the WWW (InfoSeek & AltaVista) and NewsGroups (DejaNews) for information on poison ivy. My new found wisdom is described below. Knowing that a...

A few additional, basic, emergency first aid suggestions: Bach flower Rescue Remedy (which can be diluted and sucussed in the same manner as homeopathic remedies) is invaluable for shock and trauma, especially for children. For 2nd and 3rd degree burns, Calendula succuss (juice) is highly beneficial to promote healing without the danger of the wound closing over an infection. For a burn or other wound that you are concerned may close over an infection, make a poultice of plantain leaves mixed with enough water to make it clump together. Place directly on the burn/wound or in between layers of gauze/cloth. Remove the poultice frequ...

This post is long (about 900 lines)! There is an intro and two section beyond dealing with specific bites/stings and what to do about them. I decided to post this information after seeing posts about treatments that were not entirely accurate, or after reading discussions about bee stings where people were recommending taking lots of over-the-counter meds (a few months ago). OK. Let me start by saying a few words. This post is informational only. I am not a physician. I have lots of experience at the various levels of EMT (Emergency Medical Technician). I have taught in the past (both medical and rescue), have "worked" on a pharmacolo...

Article #25 ===== A Stitch in Time Glenn Cockwell The Leader, March 1992 You have all experienced it, the high-pitched summons bordering on panic: "Scouter, come quick! John has cut himself." Off you go, first aid kit in hand, hurrying but trying to project a calm image. And there is the victim, blood over everything. Move quickly calm the Scout; find the wound; apply direct pressure; elevate. Thank goodness, the bleeding has stopped. You know the drill now. Clean him up, wash out the cut if it is minor, apply a dressing, secure it and now... And now, the first aid book goes on to the next chapter. But, wait a minute. The cut was kind of ...

SKIN , which covers our body, has the important function of pro tecting the internal organs and tissues from the environment and physical objects. Technically, this protective covering is also our largest body organ and the first line of defense from in juries and bacteria. With injury, the outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is either scraped away or opened-up to permit bacteria and materials to enter. In a more severe wound, the next layer downward, the dermis is penetrated. This contains connective tissue, sweat glands, hair follicles, nerves, lymph and blood vessels. Generally speaking, the deeper the wound, the more serious the cons...

Top Ten Herbs for Medical Emergencies
I recommend we have some of these herbs premade and stored for emergency use before and after the PS. I think the following herbs should defiantly be on the seed teams save list so we can continue to use them well after the PS. I recommend purchasing the tape and listening to it to get the full story. Edited from a Video Cassette tape with the subject: Top Ten Herbs for Medical Emergencies, Lecture by Dr. Richard Schulze.
