This document is made to teach you how to setup an internet connection on your dreamcast using Freei ( www.freeinternet.com ) as the ISP (internet service provider). Of course, you can set it up with your existing ISP but make sure you know the STMP, POP3, and full username (example: username@isp.com) for that ISP. I recommend you just sign up for a Freei.net account and follow my instructions. Here we go:

  1. Go to www.freeinternet.com and download the FreeInternet client software. (Note: I'm not positive if there's a Mac version or not)

  2. Install the client software and restart your computer when prompted.

  3. Run the client by double-clicking the FreeClient 2.65 icon. Follow the instructions to get access numbers (7-digit phone numbers used to dial Freei) and create an account.
(IMPORTANT: WHEN YOU GET A LIST OF ACCESS NUMBERS FOR YOUR AREA WRITE DOWN 2 OF THEM. ALSO, WRITE DOWN YOUR FREEI USERNAME AND PASSWORD)

  4. Boot up your Dreamcast (phone line attached) with the Web Browser disk. If you tried setting up an account on your Dreamcast before, go ahead and clear all fields and start over with my instruction. If you are using Browser 2.0 you can go to settings by pressing START on the controller and clicking on OPTIONS. Go to INTERNET CONNECTION.

  5. At the BASIC INFO section in the REAL NAME field type the first half of your Freei email address. (ya know, everything before the @ symbol)

  6. In the USERNAME field type: yourusername@xx.freei.net. (xx being the 2-letter abbreviation for the state you're in)

  7. In the PASSWORD field type the password you used to sign up for your Freei account.

  8. In the DIALUP NUMBER field type: your area code then one of the access numbers you got from the Freei client software.

  9. In the BACKUP NUMBER field type: your area code then the other access number you got from the freei client software.

  10. In both DNS fields leave them blank. Click OK.

  11. In the DIAL OPTIONS section where it says AREA CODE type in your area code.

  12. In the LONG DISTANCE PREFIX and CALL WAITING PREFIX fields leave them blank. If you want turn off call waiting put *70 in the OUTSIDE DIAL PREFIX field. Browser 2.0 only: the MODEM INIT field should have something in it already. Leave it as is.

  13. Choose whether you're going to use tone or pulse (tone dials faster) and choose not to dial an area code. Choose not to use blind dial. Click OK.

  14. In the PROXY SETTINGS section choose not to use proxy. Unless, of course, you want to set up the Dreamcast to a LAN and know how to set up a proxy connection. The PROXY SERVER NAME and PROXY PORT should stay blank now. Click OK.

  15. You should go to the EMAIL ACCOUNT section now. In the EMAIL LOGIN field type the first half of your freei email address. (everything before the @ symbol)

  16. In the EMAIL PASSWORD field type the password you used to sign up for a Freei account.

  17. In the EMAIL ADDRESS field type: yourusername@xx.freei.net. (xx being the state you're in)

  18. In the INCOMING SERVER field type: mail.xx.freei.net. (xx being the state you're in)

  19. In the OUTGOING SERVER field type: mail.xx.freei.net (xx being the state you're in)

  20. Choose whether or not you want you want to use mail headers or original text in replies. Click OK.

That's it! You should now save everything and dial into Freei through your Dreamcast. You can setup optional settings to suit your preferences.
