Well, we obviously had some major productional slow-downs this time around. It's been months and months since the last issue, but at least we're not trying to release garbage and pass it off as a high-quality Text E-Zine. Defcon 7 was a complete and total blast, and much was learned there, both educationally and practically. There was a great amount to be absorbed this year, and we didn't have time to take in all aspects of the convention. This year, unlike last, all of the HiR Writers that attended Defcon were able to bring full-fledged laptops. Axon purchased a fairly nice Pentium 90 with 40 megs of ram and 810 megs of hard ...

So, towards the beginning of November I was walking around Best Buy (drooling over the Rio, and looking for some Linux stuff and audio equipment) when something takes me by surprise: a BeOS Bundle (The OS and a really great book called "The BeOS Bible"). I'd actually been trying to get a copy of BeOS from an acquaintance of mine who had a "Warez" copy of it, just to try it out. (It's $99 from BeDepot.com, and up until recently, it was never carried in stores). I was willing to cough up $100 for an OS that I like, but I wasn't about to cough up $100 just to try something... The bundle pack was going for $54.99... A Winner in my...

So, you've done your hacking homework, and you're seeing that it's getting harder and harder to find a good place to poke around and play, because everyone and their CEO has hopped on the "Intrusion Detection System (IDS)" Bandwagon. These systems look for odd activity, or "anomalies", as they are often called. "IDS"'s have been around for a dreadfully long time, it's just that they were never categorized as such until recently (Just like there have been chevy blazers for a long time, but the category "Sport Utility Vehicle" didn't exist until very recently, so they just called it a truck until some better title ca...

Defcon is a convention held yearly in las Vegas usually in July. It is promoted by Dark Tangent and his Defcon Goons. For more information about Defcon consult: http://www.defcon.org In concept, Defcon is a gathering of computer enthusiasts, paranoid people, and people who just want to be in the lime light. Ironically the majority of these people call themselves "Hackers." Weather any of these people can create furniture with an axe I do not know. (See Dictionary definition) The Ride to Las Vegas My commerads and I boarded the airplane around 11 or 12pm and plopped down in our seats. Axon and Frogman plopped out their new(er) lapt...

I Borrowed this book from a local library system. Overall Rating: ### (Three Roots. Lots of info, but kind of confusing) TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2 is a down-and-dirty look at the BSD UNIX TCP/IP stack. Hackers Information Report is an electronic magazine that's distributed free of charge over the Internet and bulletin board systems. It is produced by a group of real hackers and phone phreaks, and only discusses ethical hacking and phone phreaking techniques and information. We never cover steaking, blowing things up, or system cracking directly. Some of the information that we publish might be able to be used in a negative fashion, but we provide it to be used in an educational, ethical manner. We may publish some "Walk Through" hacks and tricks, but we really attempt to describe a given system in enough detail for the reader to gai...

Well, the HiR Crew did it once again... We've compiled yet another information-packed issue of Hackers Information Report, and we picked up another writer along the way! Axon says this probably one of the funnest issues he's been involved with since the whole thing began. Classes are winding down for most of the writers, and everything is turning out pretty good so far. Despite our slow-down in information divulging, HiR is STILL healthy and alive, looking for more information and constantly thinking up bizarre technologically-focused stuff to give to you, the reader. Ixl is the newest writer in the HiR Crew. He joined up with us ...
