The Cardigans - (Stockholm Records) were supposed to release their new single
"Lovefool" on July 29th but it has been delayed until next
week. The album "First Band On The Moon" is scheduled for
release in Europe on September 9th, and shortly after that
in the US and Japan - says Topp40 in their latest issue.
They continue to list the band's merits so far with "Life".
Apparently it has sold over 1,5 million copies worldwide.
All singles has been on the UK Top 40, and "Carnival" was
number 1 on Iceland and in Japan. Their new album was
recorded at Tambourine Studios and produced by Tore Johanson.
It will be released by Motor in Germany, Mercury in the US,
Stockholm Label Group in Scandinavia and on Polydor in the
rest of the world. If you want to see the band, here is
their somewhat incomplete tour schedule gathered from Motor,
Topp40 and Nicolas Moch (X = the whole month):

18/8 Chelmsford, V'96 Festival, UK
5/9 New York, Roseland, US
7/9 Toronto, Lee's Place, CANADA
5/10 Helsinki, FINLAND
7/10 Stockholm, Gino
8/10 Stockholm, Gino
10/10 Oslo, NORWAY
11/10 Gothenburg
12/10 Lund
13/10 Copenhagen, DENMARK
15/10 Berlin Huxley's, GERMANY
16/10 Hamburg, GERMANY
17/10 GERMANY -24/10 (cities, venues not decided yet)
25/10 Munich, GERMANY
9/11 UK -21/11 (cities, venues not decided yet)
X/12 EUROPE (cities, venues not decided yet)
X/1 JAPAN (cities, venues not decided yet)
X/2 US (cities, venues not decided yet)
X/3 US (cities, venues not decided yet)
(Source: Topp40, Nicolas Moch, Motor Booking Agency)

Ceilidh - the record company based in Linkoping will be no more after the
upcoming compilation album release (this month). Label owner
Ola Hermanson says that he is done with that part of his life,
and wants to put his effort behind Trampolene Records and his
biology work at the University. The compilation will be
distributed by Amigo and Border. Watch this space for info on
an exact release date soon. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Cloudberry Jam - (NONS) album "Another Moment Follows" has sold Gold in
Sweden some time ago. Now they are following up their
album with a "greatest hits" album to be released on
Polygram (probably Trampolene). (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Fireside - (StartRec/American Recordings) has finally been given their own
web pages on American Recordings web site. You ought to check
them out right now for information, sound clips and whatnot!
http://american.recordings.com/American_Artists/Fireside/.

Fireside will be broadcasted *LIVE* from the last stop on the
Lollapalooza tour in the US on August 4th via Internet (audio
only). Their set time is 2:40 PM CA, 1:40 PM PST - which means
22:40 in Sweden this Sunday! Where to go? Well, take a look at:
http://lollapalooza.com or http://www-imusic.com, though be aware
that swedish newspaper Expressen only listed the first one in
yesterday's paper, so it might be wise to use the second one.
After Fireside you will be able to hear Screaming Trees, Rancid,
Soundgarden, Metallica and Ramones (doing their last gig ever).

More Fireside: Graphic Audio, a US company will create an
Electronic Press Kit for the band. The EPK is a film, basically,
featuring live performance footage and interviews from their LA
visit, where they played the Viper Room. It works like this. You
go to the Graphic Audio website and quickly download (2 minutes)
a video player. Then you can choose videos to watch from their
site without having to download them. It's a new thing and it
works somewhat like RealAudio, only this includes both sound
and motion and is called VDOLive. You can find Graphic Audio at:
http://www.graphicaudio.com/. The Fireside EPK is scheduled for
August 15th. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Hipnose Records - is a record company in Finland where you can find bands like
Homespun, Going Public and Sandbugs. If you have been a
subscriber to Scandinavian Indie for a while, you have
already heard of Homespun - a young and talented band from
Kouvola, a small town in the backwoods of southern Finland
with a sound that has been described (by Kimmo on the list)
as "the best thing coming from Finland in the Sebadoh /
Dinosaur Jr / Pavement / The Bear Quartet / slacker /
loser-indie category!"
On Hipnose, you cand find their
four-track CD "Fabio Fitness And More". Going Public has
released two albums "Ancient Heart" (on Gaga Goodies)
and their latest one "Hooligan" on Hipnose. They have also
released three 7" singles on Hipnose and one EP called
"
Emotionmotion" on Gaga Goodies. If the names Troggs,
Magazine, Saints, Velvet Underground, Triffids etc. mean
something to you, you ought to check this band out! Their
homepage: http://www.kouvola.ksaok.fi/~aylatalo/bands/gp/.
Sandbugs is the label's next release, and is said to be
better than Buffalo Tom! If all this sounds interesting
contact: Timo Ranta <Timo.Ranta@sharks.kylmedia.fi> or
write to him at: T.Ranta, Viertolantie 14 C 22, 45 200
Kouvola, FINLAND. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Sandy Lyle - played for an audience of about 250 at Studion on July 12th
(was anyone from the list there?). If one looked close enough
one would also find that record company CNR Music was there
to watch and listen. The gig went extremely well, and the band
played both new and old songs including "
Mr. Anderson" and
"
Lovely" for example, though in new and more guitar-rattling
versions. An extra number was necessary, and for that, they
had selected the Scandinavian Indie favorite "
Dirge"! A new
demo is in the making. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Soundfront - the record company based in Uppsala has filed their bankruptcy
petition. On the label were bands like Face Down, Candysuck,
Crawley and Buckshot O.D. What will happen to these bands
will be decided when Roadrunner, who has got a option contract
with the label, decides what bands they want to sign for the
European and American markets. (Source: Topp40)

Stockholm Label Group - will release a compilation album with among others
The Cardigans, HappyDeadMen, Cloudberry Jam,
Ray Wonder, Sonic Surf City, Speaker, Naked and
Pineforest Crunch. The compilation is meant mostly
for the Asian market. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Trampolene - news: The band Riviera is signed and ready to take over
your ears in the near future. Sonic Surf City's latest
album "
Surf Don't Walk" is a success, and has climbed
radio charts all summer. They are also ready for release
in Asia (on Polydor). HappyDeadMen start to mix their
new and upcoming album on August 20th. Naked are going on
a worldwide tour, starting with Germany in September.
(Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Trastocksfestival - the swedish "
Woodstock" this year in Skelleftea might
have been the last festival ever! The police blaimed
the organisers of the festival for the large amount
of alcohol flooding outside the festival area (!) and
Jocke and Affe (organisers) threatens to drop everything
because they feel that they are doing their best and
can not be held responsible for what happens outside
the festival area. Newspaper "
Norra Vasterbotten"
printed an article where Jocke said that if there will
be a festival next year, it will be a lot smaller and
with Skelleftea-bands only. A meeting on August 13th
where the Police, arrangers, social offices, cultural
offices and others will hopefully shed some light on
the question. (Source: Scandinavian Indie)

Subject: FWD: Philadelphia Music Conference

Just thought I'd forward this message I received the other day. It's
probably only interesting to people in the US, but might also be
interesting to not yet signed bands everywhere. Please note that this
is an advertisment, but nothing I have been told to post or tell anyone
about or getting paid for (that will never happen). I only post it because
I think some people might find it interesting. If you are in any way
offended by me posting this to the list, please let me know personally.

Philadelphia Music Conference

This year's PMC will be held from October 30 - November 2. There'll be 3
days of 45 panels and 4 nights of 400 showcases at 31 clubs around
Philadelphia. In the last few years, 19 bands showcasing the PMC were
signed to major labels. The PMC is the third-largest and fastest-growing
conference in the country including all styles of commercial music, and
it features rock, hip-hop, and acoustic music. Last year, 2,850 people
attended during the day, and 20,000 participated in our nighttime showcases.

It costs $15 to apply to showcase and $99 to register; those early-bird
deadlines are valid until August 25. The event itself is at the Doubletree
Hotel at Broad and Locust Streets. Our phone number is (215) 426-4109 and
our e-mail is info@gopmc.com. Also visit our new website at
http://www.gopmc.com. You can print out the registration form, showcase
application, and marketing information there.

If you give us your street address, we'll send you a brochure in the mail;
for now, we've enclosed some more information below.

Sincerely yours,

Tony Parker

PMC Fact Sheet - 1996

PMC MOVES TO SPACIOUS DOUBLETREE HOTEL FOR 1996!
Beautiful new facility with more room to accommodate our massive increase in
registration

The PMC Track Record Of Success

The Philadelphia Music Conference was founded in 1992 as the first
conference to bring together people interested in all styles of commercial
music, with an emphasis on rock, hip-hop, and acoustic. Since then, the PMC
has become the fastest-growing music conference in the country. Last year,
our daytime attendance was a record 2,750 people, with an additional 15,000
at our nighttime events. This year, we've expanded to the beautiful
Doubletree Hotel and will again be hosting over 40 different seminars and
over 350 showcases all around the city.

Since our inception, over nineteen bands that showcased at the PMC went on
to sign major label deals. That's phenomenal. These artists include
Anthrophobia (Mausoleum), Bahamadia (Chrysalis), Ben Arnold
(Ruffhouse/Columbia), Divine Beings (Reprise), Echolyn (Epic), Emmet
Swimming (Epic), G. Love and Special Sauce (Epic/Okeh), Greenberry Woods
(Sire), Lauren Hart (Columbia), Idle Wilds (RCA), Lisa Loeb (Geffen), Keith
Martin (Ruffhouse/Columbia), The Nixons (MCA), Pull My Daisy (Almo Sounds),
The Roots (Geffen), Sojourn (Mercury), Solution a.d. (TAG/Atlantic), Task
4ource (A&M), and Wanderlust (RCA).

Industry Presence

The Philadelphia Music Conference is a major event on the calendars of
people in the music business. The rapid growth of the conference has caught
the attention of the industry as well as the media; in attendance are people
from almost every major label and many independent labels. The conference
receives considerable national and local press.

Each year, the PMC features well over 200 outstanding speakers who are among
the top names in the industry. In the past, we have hosted Phil Spector
(legendary Producer, and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), Krist
Novoselic (JAMPAC; former bass player for Nirvana), John Hampton (producer
of the Gin Blossoms' multi-platinum New Miserable Experience), Jermaine
Dupri (Producer of Kris Kross), Joe "
The Butcher" Nicolo (co-owner,
Ruffhouse Records), Michael Greene (President of NARAS, presenters of the
Grammy Awards), Jonathan Poneman (Co-founder of Sub-Pop Records, the label
that signed Nirvana and spawned Seattle's music scene), Mary Wilson (The
Supremes), Michael Mauldin (Manager of Arrested Development), guitar hero
Adrian Belew, and (Scraping) Foetus (Clint Ruin/Jim Thirwell), the producer
and remixer for Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Promotion Opportunities

You can promote yourself by being on the PMC CD Compilation; taking out an
ad in the PMC Directory; putting your materials in our goodie bag; and
having an exhibition table at the event. Call (215) 426-4109 for
information and discount packages.

Panels Where You Can Learn About The Business

The PMC's panels, in the words of the Philadelphia Inquirer, "
tend toward
question-and-answer sessions providing useful information." At the PMC 96,
you can learn about:

How to make money in the music business
Attracting management and legal representation
Traps and pitfalls in management, booking, and recording contracts
Starting and running your own independent label
Getting a publishing deal and maximizing royalties
Hooking up with valuable distribution
The facts about advances, options, and recoupment

This is your opportunity to get some real advice which can make you money
and direct your career. If you want a manager or attorney to look over a
contract...to ask a producer about equipment...to talk to a clubowner or
agent about booking or touring...this is the place. And this year, we will
continue the new interactive music clinics that we started last year. This
is your opportunity to hear and interact with talented musicians talking
about their craft.

Networking Opportunities

The PMC is about networking face-to-face with people who make things happen
in the industry. What makes the PMC so special is that it has one-on-one
sessions at which attendees can directly interact with presenters. You will
have the opportunity to talk with people from all departments of major and
independent record labels, producers, publishers, press, radio, agents,
managers, and promoters - from the West and East coasts. This is where
you'll really shmooze (and drink) with some of the top people in the industry.

The PMC is an event which kicks careers into high gear. Ask the Idle Wilds
- who got signed to RCA as a direct result of the conference and then met
their producer, John Hampton (who produced the Gin Blossoms' multi-platinum
CD) at the PMC. Ask G. Love and Special Sauce - who met their manager and
producer at the conference and got their Epic record deal (and,
subsequently, their Nike television ad) as a direct result of the PMC. Ask
Top Dawgs, who showcased during the day at the conference, met a rep from
Solar Records and got signed to a $1.5 million deal. If you're serious
about meeting people in the business, then do something both effective and
affordable - register yourself and your group to attend the Philadelphia
Music Conference, so you can be there when the action happens, from October
30 - November 2.

And bring your tapes to the PMC. This year we're having even more song
evaluation sessions - where industry representatives will give you feedback
on your work. This weekend, you can actually have your music heard by the
people in the music business who make things happen.

Showcase Application

Unlike at other conferences, musicians who showcase at the PMC are selected
by a panel of people in the music industry and media. We don't care if
you're signed or unsigned - we want good music, and we leave the politics to
city hall. All styles of original music will be judged on originality,
songwriting, execution, and musicianship. Quality of production will not be
a factor. Our goal is to continue our track record of 19 showcasing acts
going on to sign major label deals. All tapes will be given a fair listen;
in the past, people on the committee have called bands whose tapes they have
liked and have even ended up working with some of those bands.

To apply for a PMC showcase, you must include:

1. $15 entry fee (check or money order in US funds, drawn on a US bank and
made payable to: Philadelphia Music Conference). Entries without entry fee
will not be considered.
2. Cassette, CD, LP, or video
3. Press kit with biographical information and photo (if available) for
each act submitted, and -
4. A separate sheet of paper with complete contact information, including
all of the following: Name of artist/group; name of contact person; hometown
(for listing); full address and ZIP/country code; phone (for PMC
notification and also for listing); contact person; performing rights
affiliation (ASCAP, BMI; SESAC; SOCAN; other; none); artist manager; and
studio where demo was recorded, typed or printed.

Make $15 check payable to "
Philadelphia Music Conference" and mail to PMC
Showcase Director, P.O. Box 29363, Philadelphia, PA 19125. Fees are
non-refundable and submissions cannot be returned. All bands will be
notified by mail by September 25. Deadline for showcase entry is AUGUST 23.

Registration Rates and Deadlines

If you act by August 23, you can take advantage of our special '96
introductory rate and save big money. For only $99 (a savings of $96 off
our regular rate), you can get a ticket which will get you into all 3 days
and 4 nights of the conference. The industry registration, which is only
$135 (a savings of $90 off our regular rate), also includes extra networking
opportunities, exclusive parties, and advanced seminars.

This is the best music conference value in the country. And if you register
by the deadline, you will also be listed in the PMC directory, distributed
to all attendees. For this price at the early-bird rate, you can register
your whole band and get three tickets to the PMC for the price of ONE
admission to another conference. If you register your group, you will be
able to attend more of our simultaneous panels and events, and you will have
more opportunities for your group to be networking. The PMC is offering
another special deal in addition to our low introductory rate: if you
register three people or more, you can take another $10 off per person. You
cannot go wrong at that price.

PMC Registration rates & postmark deadlines:

BASIC REGISTRATION:
August 23 - $99 Introductory rate
September 27 - $135
October 18 - $169
After October 18 and at the door - $195

INDUSTRY REGISTRATION (incl. extra networking parties, seminars):

Hotel Information:

In 1994 and 1995, the PMC completely sold out the host hotel's sleeping
rooms two months in advance of the event, so make your registrations now.
Stay where the action is - while others are traveling, you'll be networking.
This year, room prices at the Doubletree Hotel are available for only $109
(plus 13% tax). These exclusive rates are being offered only to registered
delegates of the PMC; you must mention the Philadelphia Music Conference to
receive this rate. Reserve your room today - call (215) 893-1600 to make
reservations.

THE PMC conference site is at the Doubletree Hotel, located at the corner of
Broad and Locust Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19107. From New Jersey or I-95,

block up. Parking may be available in the Park America Garage adjacent to
the hotel; current self-parking is $13/day for all hotel guests with in and
out privileges, and $7/day for non-guests with no in and out privileges.

Still no Stockholm date?
I sort of recall seeing a date for Gino somewhere, but I cannot remember where.
Maybe I was just dreaming... :(

PS. Anyone who spent monday night in Stockholm without catching Glenn Branca
at the Water festival Classic stage should regret it for the rest of their
lives...

PPS. And the same goes for those who missed Loosegoats' semi-unplugged gig at
Lollipop.

Hmm, "
second rate" Oasis.. I just have to totally disagree with you
there I'm afraid. That track is beautiful!

Okay, so it was remixed by the same guy who did A Shrine's remixes
as well. Then I can understand the whole thing, as his remixes of
A Shrine were Goa Trance thingies! If you remember what song it was,
please tell me - I can't make it out!

I'm not going to say "
I told you so". :-)

Well, no. It is a new recording (Jocke said that all tracks were new
recordings when I talked to him), though if the Bear Quartet track is a
remix of a previously released song - I can't really say...

Hear hear! It's worth every SEK, just for the Backfish, Drowners and
Popundret songs!

I definitely think you're right about that! ;-)

I have changed someone's life! I have changed someone's life! Er.. well
I mean "
WE" there actually - as all of us voted on what should be on
the tape.

Can't do anything but agree! They are amazing!

Did anyone see their 18 minute performance?! I missed it by about 3 hours!

That's exactly what I feel as well, for both of them! Popundret have
several songs that have made big impressions on me - not only on their
"
Montmartre 15 40" CD, but also on the latest West Side compilation CD!
And the lyrics to Puffin's "
Hard To Quit" really hits the nail on its
head, at least for me, even though I am not sitting by the computer
playing games all day either (I actually answer my e-mail all day ;-))
I can even relate the lyrics to smoking cigarettes as well by the way...

I'm sad we never met at Lollipop.. we should have made plans. Better
plans. Oh well, we'll all be at the Mojave 3 gig in October anyway,
right!? Or Lush? Or The Cardigans? Hell, I know we're all going to
meet some day! Right?

Subject: Roober Oivik from Estonia?

Regarding music from them Baltic countries - we're having a disucssion
on the Slowdive/Mojave 3 mailing list right now about a band from
Estonia called "
Roober Oivik" - apparently they have released an album
on a _Swedish_ label in 1993 !?

Anyone know anything about this - PLEASE let me know!
-----------------------------------------------------

Here's the info from the Slowdive/Mojave 3 mailing list:

* They did a Peel session in (I think) summer 1993. They made it to the
* UK by catching a bus from Tallinn to Warsaw, waiting overnight at the
* bus station there then proceeding across the continent... all on the
* stlg150 each BBC session fee. I believe they stayed with Peel while in
* England.
*
* Peel also met with them and did an interview when he took his show into
* Eastern Europe for a couple of weeks in 1994. As he had previously claimed to
* listeners they seemed like really nice kids (unemployed or students I
* think.)
*
* Now - the music. I taped the session, and probably also one or two
* other tracks Peel played at the above times (I tend to miss the show due
* to its dreadful scheduling these days, so don't know if he's featured
* them more recently.) I can't really remember what it sounds like, but
* probably much closer to conventional indie rock than MBV, though fairly
* good; almost certainly not much like Slowdive.
* I'll dig out the tape and report back.
*
* Releases - I know they released an album on a Swedish label in '93. And
* don't put any stock on this, but they may have switched to a domestic
* label the following year.
