Subject: recent mail spamming

_PLEASE DO NOT REPLY_ to the spam messages that you receive from the
Scandinavian Indie mailing list !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you do, you are just as bad as the person
responsible, because you send your reply to
each and every mailing list the person spammed
in the first place!

_PLEASE NOTE_ that I am working on solving this problem (ie. getting
the people responsible kicked out from their Internet
providers by informing the ISPs at their various hosts
and that is _ALL_ I can do at this moment.)

_PLEASE_ just delete all the spam mail you get from the list, and
be sure of one thing - it will stop if the ISPs do their
job. If you want the addresses to the ISPs so that you can
tell them yourselves how much you like the people responsible
kicked out, let me know.

If you decide to let me know, please let me know through PERSONAL
e-mail (to chief@lysator.liu.se) and not through the mailing list.

All my mailing lists have been spammed several times during the five
years I have been on the Internet, and I do not need this shit.

Stay with us,
//Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se)

Subject: Blithe?

Hmm, is there another band called Blithe in the world (ie. not the West Side
one)? I just found a tour schedule for "Blithe" on the net:

Blithe
Sep. 6 Rochester, NY Milestones
Sep. 8 Cleveland Heights, OH Grog Shop
Sep. 9 Buffalo, NY Nietzche's
Sep. 10 Columbus, OH Stache's
Sep. 11 Boston, MA Rathskellar
Sep. 12 Westchester, PA Rex's

Does anyone know?

Subject: Sommarens Sista Suck press-release

Press-release regarding the "Sommarens Sista Suck 1996" festival:
A few facts from the pop festival Sommarens Sista Suck (1996).

Performing artists/bands:
Friday August 23rd

Cold Turkeys
Backyard Yam
Playdough
Hamilton
Divin
Mad Vibe Sound Sistem ( yes that's the correct spelling )
Superswirls

Saturday August 24th

Polythene
The Gift
" Benny "
Erica Kane
Panic
S:t Moores
Yvonne

Audience: about 2000
Weather: warm and nice - almost too sweaty!

Best band: Divin, Polythene, Erica Kane, Superswirls & Yvonne
Best debut: Polythene
Second best debut: Superswirls

Best (overall): Yvonne

Most sold: the compilation CD "e-pop" with the three bands Carlson, Hamilton
and Divin that was released by the somewhat new record company
Strawberry Songs (with pop from Eskilstuna)

Most wanted: the festival T-Shirts that were made exclusively for the
participants (they say that some band members sold their
t-shirts after their gigs)

Biggest surprise: YVONNE DID AN EXTRA NUMBER!
It is the very first time Yvonne did this. Maybe because
of the fantastic audience..... They finished the gig
with "The Cause of lovers", and then came back and did
"Broken Parts".

The festival will return next year, for the seventh time.
(probably on August 22nd -> 23rd, more info will be released later...)

nope, my guess would be that it's the west side one alright. they are
signed to alias in the us which means they share label with fine bands
such as the archers of loaf and small.

Hello,
Just a short one to tell the Swedish and European audience, that the new
Cardigans CD 'The first band on the moon', is out today. Check it out. I
think (some people may think I am subjective and paid to say that, but I
am not) it is very good.
Cheers,

I haven't heard much about where the tapes on the different Scandinavian Indie

Swedish tape and the Estonian tape out there somewhere...

Who's got 'em all?!

Afternoon everyone! :)

Ummm... I'm new and I'm here to introduce myself (so, "hello").

This list was recommended to me by Chris (Forsberg). I haven't been on it for
very long, but the things that I've seen and read during that short period of
time do appear to be quite interesting. I like all sorts of things, and I'm
always open to suggestion. However, I'm way "down here" and that can be a
bit of a hassle sometimes (if you know what I mean).

Well, I've gotta go! Sorry it's so short and sweet...

Ciao,
Natasha.

Maybe you should tell them about the (now defunct) swedish band named SH! We
might end up with another "Shallow" case ;-)

I'm so sorry I can't be there at the time, but please, all scan-indies who

Scandinavian Indie DEMO REVIEWS Scandinavian Indie

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Anxiety Closet (3.25)
2. Race Track (4.10)
3. Dissolving (4.40)
4. Too Slow (3.52)
5. Not Ok (3.22)

Scandinavian Indie Review: Listening to Sodabuzz's fourth demo, sound quality
not as crisp and clear as on their earlier demos (??), I realise that what we
have here is actually Sweden's own _Catherine Wheel_.

I know I have mentioned it before, but they are really getting closer and
closer to the CW sound, vocally and musically. Vocally, it's almost scary how
close to _Rob Dickinson_ the singer is! Very, no, _extremely_ nice. Whatever
song, the vocals are fantastic! Musically it is like CW's harder, electric
guitar filled songs, the harder and heavier, the slower and pounding ones. To
try out how close to CW they really are, I actually played one song from the
demo, then switched to a CW song from their album "Happy Days" without my
"test person" noticing. I had to explain that it really was not still
Sodabuzz! That is how close they are!

The first song, "Anxiety Closet" is a re-recording of the same song on their
last demo. This version is a lot slower, and with a lot more thundering
guitars. The vocals have been put in the background, where on the previous
demo, they were right in front of everything else. I am not sure whether this
is a good thing or not, but it sounds okay.

"Race Track" and "Dissolving" are my two favourite songs (I can't decide on
one of them). Both have the most tight sound on the demo. "Race Track" with
its alarming guitars, foot-tapping addictive drums and bass leading the way
into these alarming guitar-walls. "Dissolving" also with these alarming
guitars but also with single guitar riffs, the red thread that brings the
whole song into the roaring electric guitar-filled chorus-parts. It is simply
beautiful to listen to how well everything works together.

"Too Slow" is, strangely enough, the song that has got the most speed of
them all. It has got some punk-ish guitars and bass, actually pretty similar
to _Candysuck_'s "Kill Your Boyfriend", but here they have been powerpopped,
turned into walls of pleasant noise. The peak is reached when the song builds
up from the middle section into more and more noise, drums almost exploding,
pulsating guitars together with the bass having one joint single purpose:
to go faster. Perhaps I have found one reason behind the name?

"Not Ok" is a good song to end the demo with. I has got that "end of the
demo"
feeling over it somehow. And here it is clear to me that the guitars,
well, the music in fact, has received the most attention on this demo. The
vocals are still somewhat in the background, at least compared to their last
demo. The echo, or large room, effect on the vocals here, works, creating a
genuine feeling behind the lyrics, especially the crying "why me?"'s.

I was told that they had not listened to _Catherine Wheel_ for quite some
time, so maybe it is time to pick up "Happy Days", or better yet, don't! No
one knows what that would cause! I for one love to have a swedish _Catherine
Wheel_, and that is Sodabuzz. Now please let the guys move into a studio for
a couple of weeks, and give them a chance to put these songs on a CD! This
is just too good to be forgotten!

Subject: Spam on scan-indie

This morning I got _another_ junk email message subscribing me to a
mailing list about something I'm not remotely interested in. They
even want me to phone or fax to the States to remove myself from it.

The thing is that the headers show that they got hold of me through
scan-indie. We got quite a nasty bunch of spamming a couple of weeks
ago, and this is presumably only going to get worse. At the moment it
looks like for me, being here means risking a lot of nasty junk
email. There are perfectly good ways of running lists so that this
doesn't happen.

So I think I'll unsubscribe in about a week if nothing has been done.

cheers

Yes, maybe they're ace. Maybe they're good. Maybe I'll like them.
But I find it a bit boring to find a band SOUNDING so close to another band.

Influence, YES, copy NO.

We don't need carbon copies. There has been too much of them
the last 4 years in Swedish Indie. What we really need is innovative talented
bands with some NEW great ideas. Am I wrong? (Rhetoric question.)

Well, to tell you the truth - it's the vocals that do the trick here. I
believe that any band can sound like another band, only if they have a
singer that is close (ie. good) enough to the other band's singer. If
Sodabuzz's singer wasn't so close, they (the whole band) would probably
not sound like Catherine Wheel.

I mean, a band can play Nirvana songs, but if they don't have a singer
that sounds like Mr. Cobain, they can't really be said to sound like
Nirvana, _even though they play Nirvana songs_.

That I agree with, though I never said Sodabuzz were carbon copies of
Catherine Wheel. In fact, they (say that they) have not listened to CW,
and they were even surprised I compared them with CW - so it is nothing
they have done intentionally of course. No one would like that.
