Loosegoats (who recently released their debut album "For Sale By Owner")
played a small gig at Folk & Rack (a record store) here in Lund today.
They played about seven songs, including a new song (actually it was an
old song but it has not been recorded yet) that sounded great.

It was a very good gig, at least as good as a gig can get in a crowded
record store.

Hey all - _Please_ remember that this list only works if everyone writes

lately, which is enough to call for this reminder.

You wouldn't want people to post their messages in Swahili, right?

Right, so keep them posts coming, but in _English_. Thank you.

Doesn't it have anything to do with the fact that the song is on the
Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. When i last it, it had all kinds of scenes
from that movie.

MIDEM @ Cannes 1997
Report by: Hans Lindell / Rockfile
(hans.lindell@rockfile.se)

M I D E M
The number one annual meeting place for the decision makers in the music
industry, marketing people and producers!

There is no question whether to go to the MIDEM music fair in Cannes, in the
south of France at the end of January every year, or not, for those within
the music business elite, just as there is no question for any national
athletic team whether to go to a World Championship tournament or not.

Actually, one can not completely compare MIDEM with a tournament, because
Cannes is not where the fight over the market shares is held, but it is
the place where a large part of all contacts are made, negotiations are
held, contracts are signed and the future for thousands and thousands of
musicians is decided.

To participate at MIDEM is like a sign of quality for the people in the
music business. "See you at MIDEM" is a usual invitation, to which it might
be a bit embarrassing to answer "No we are not going there". Such an answer
may be interpreted as if something was wrong with your company, that the
company is too fresh and without resources. Or maybe, quite simply, that
the company is not a serious one.

Of course, one can work within Sweden without going to MIDEM, but when it
comes to non-domestic contacts, to never go to MIDEM and keep the company
and the contacts in a working state, is very probably a lot more difficult,
if not impossible.

Among the Swedish visitors at this years's fair, one could find veterans
like Dag H{ggquist from Gazell Music, who celebrated his thirty first
jubilee and first timers like Ben Marlene from Jimmy Fun and Helena Sv{rd
from NONS Records.

Many people from all over the world have been at MIDEM five-ten-fifteen
times in a row, which results in many happy reunions between competitors
and business partners alike.

At MIDEM, video, radio stations as well as services and equipment that has
something to do with the music industry is marketed. This year, one could
find a lot of companies offering different services and solutions for
music marketing with the help of multimedia and the Internet at the special
"Multimedia Pavillion". At several places, one could also find "The MIDEM
Webclub"
where all visitors had access to computers in order to surf the
net, get needed information or send and read e-mail.

If MIDEM in Cannes is the number one meeting place, the arrangers have
started to compete with themselves by arranging two other MIDEMs. One
in Hong Kong in May, and one in Miami in September.

This year's MIDEM in Cannes, which was the thirty first one in a row, about
11.000 people from 3.395 companies and organizations participated. A total
of 85 countries were represented.

>From saturday January 19th to thursday January 23rd, 52 concerts were held,
where most of the participating companies presented several artists under
different themes like Reggae, Rocks Cannes, Japanese Night, The Best Of
British, Euromix, Nashville, Songwriters Association, Euro Dance Party,
Les Dance d'or, Detroit-Paris, and so on.

Well known names, like Jimmy Cliff, Shaggy, Toure Kunda, Brainpool, Robert
Miles, Mr President, Los Del Rio, Culture, Terje Rypdahl, Jan Akkerman
and several others, represented a big mix of different music styles.

Lesser known bands and artists got the chance to show themselves at
several places. One of them was right outside Palais des Festivals
in Magic Mirrors, where a total of fourteen bands played under the
theme "Talents -97". We might hear more from names like Ultra Orange,
Bazbaz, Castafiore Bazooka, Zoomtop Orchestra and La Foule in the
future. At the Cannes youth center MJC Picaud, bands like Kill The Thrill,
Tripod and Las Wampas played, and at the Amiraute on Palm Beach, unknown
bands like Cribb 199, Aux 88 and Dulce Pontes held their concerts. At
Europe's oldest discotheque, Whiskey 'a Gogo (opened 1960), some of
the world's best DJ:s played, like Carl Cox, Bruno Guez and Toni Rox,
between midnight and 5am.

Thousands of bands who did not perform live received promotion through
the enormous amount of "samplers", or promo-CDs, which were spread around
during the week. Among the many examples, one can mention Swedish bands
like Superswirls, Brainpool, Broder Daniel, Bumblebees, The April Tears,
The Family Tree, etc. who now have their samplers spread around the world.

Roasting House from Malm| celebrated their ten year anniversary
by first having a lottery where the prize consisted of a free week
in their studio (which was won by Per Alexandersson from P3), and then
giving away a full-length CD with Crayfish, These Blue Days and Subculture
among others.

During the week, 23 conferences and seminars were held, with themes like
Clearing Multimedia Rights, How Useful Are Pluggers?, A Digital Update, What
Distributions Networks For The Future, and Business From The Underground.

One of the most interesting seminars was "Music on-Line, A Revolution Beyond
The Desk"
which brought up the question about what the music industry can do
to survive when the consumers, in the near future, are able to download
music files with CD quality to their computers at home via the Internet.
Brett Atwood from Billboard, Gabriel Levy - BMG Entertainment, Brian Pertl -
Microsoft, among others, shared their thoughts about the subject.

Another interesting seminar was held about "Europe, Music And The Young
Generation"
. This seminar went on during the whole day (monday), and
the discussion presented the subject of influence, possibilities and effects
when it comes to young people. Among the twenty five speakers, one could
find names like Xavier Rox - MIDEM, Nana Mouskouri - who represented the
European Parliament, Jean Michel Baer - the European commission, Mark Jones -
Wall of Sounds and Brian Eno.

Sweden was represented by 85 companies, of which record companies, music
publishers and distributors made out the biggest part. Hardware companies
like CD-Plant and DCM as well as organizations like STIM and SOM were
also present. The Music Fair in Gothenburg was also there, creating
new contacts and gathered ideas for the 1998 fair. Media companies like
Sveriges Radio, Topp40, Appollon Bild & Film, Rockfile and Sweden's
leading pre-mastering company; Cutting Room were also a part of the
Swedish crew.

The Swedish booth, where Export Music Sweden had gathered many of the
Swedish companies, was one of the largest at MIDEM, and the interest from
the whole world in Swedish music is, as expected, big. Something that never
stops to puzzle business people in the music industry.

"Do you have special greenhouses for success groups in Sweden?" is a
question I have been asked. The answer is, as we all know: Yes, but
we call it "replokal" (rehearsal rooms).

The big interest, to create and play music oneself, in combination with
the favourable climate amateur bands in Sweden have today, together with
the competent business people, is most certainly what have brought
Sweden to its position as one of the largest music export countries in
the world today.

Subject: introducing... myself

Hi.

Like Daniel recently did I'd like to introduce myself as I just resubscribed
to this list after having month with a messed up mailbox... Actually I've
been on this list for more a little bit more than one and a half year and
now I think it's introduction time.

I like music, and when I'm alone at home (and noone can hear me) I like to
sing along with e.g. Fidget, bob hund, Yvonne, Nine Inch Nails, Tori Amos,
Jakob Hellman, Divine Comedy, Depeche Mode and Einsturzende Neubauten.

I also go to school, I try to learn how to drive, I watch movies, I make
webpages and I talk a lot of crap and more serious stuff with a friend
called Jenny. If we'd had a band I'd play the melodica (or what ever it's
called; the instrument Thomas in bob hund plays...?) and she the tambourine,
that's already decided.

If I'm able to I'll hopefully go see Fidget and Gene on the 17th this month.
(I don't live in Stockholm unfortunately.)

Well, that's about it... You can always go check my quite recently updated
Yvonnepage: www.algonet.se/~elin/yvonne

Bye.

Oh, i have no doubt the elite was there. the money elite was there in large
quantities. yeah! yeah! yeah! but was there any good music there? let's
see... don't think Bad Vugum or Trash Can was there, not Kranky or Drunken
Fish either... i doubt that Matador wasn't there either... so this must be a
clear sign that there's something wrong with these companies. they are not
quality. no freshness, not serious. complete trash. yup, can't see it in no
other way... but hey! there was rober miles! mr. president!! los del rio!!!!
macarena, now there's quality for you!!!

whoever wrote the piece on midem, please don't take this as a personal
flame, i'm just saying that it was a meating of money, not music. i don't
think freshnes had anything to do with midem.

is this what scandinavian INDIE is about?

and hey! i'm not flaming. i'm just trying to get some discussion. thank you.

Perhaps not, there is always the prospect of a couple of weeks of free
vacation, I guess - like the players in american ice hockey teams have
realized. Since I have not been at Midem I do not know if this is true for
representatives of the swedish music industry, but I would certainly feel
less embarrassed if some swedish national sports teams decided to stay at
home.

Well, apart from Brainpool, I guess Timo has already expressed feelings I
agree with about these bands. Doesn't everyone already know how Shaggy,
Cliff, Miles, Mr President and Los del Rio sound? What is the point of them
appearing there? Correct if I am wrong but one guess is: Pure recreation!

>We might hear more from names like Ultra Orange,

Guess this is correct, We couldn't really hear less about them, could we?:-)
Well, as I said, I have never been at MIDEM (and I guess I will never go
there, either) so I may be far out of line here - but still... I guess the
seminars might be interesting but the rest doesn't really sound so nice. I
rather listen to music than watch it in an exhibition booth!

I have just visited the Scan-indie Internet site and watched the pictures
in the MIDEM report (the pictures were not there when I read the report a
couple of days ago). Well, OK, since representatives from House of Kicks,
Burning Heart and Dolores (together with the already mentioned NONS) were
there the event gets a somewhat better rating in my eyes. Still cannot get
rid of the feeling that it sounds just like a few days of recreation on the
french riviera, though. Perhaps this is just because I feel it is wrong to
turn music into an "industry happening" or to treat music as if it is an
industry-produced commodity you travel around and show up on fares and
exhibitions!

Well....I do understand some of your opinions. However..fairs like MIDEM,
Popcomm, SXSW etc....are an important part of the music industry. In your
thoughts its seems that music are something much more pure and "higher"
than to trade with.

But..life is a bitch... and without marketing, sales, distribution etc of

(Nothing bad with that)

I wrote this report to Scandinavian Indie just to let the readers have
some more knowledge about the music industry... It does exist, even if
some like it or not. To an incredible large number of musicians, music-
enthusiasts etc. these musicfairs seems to be unknown. Everybody knows
that there are fairs abouts cars, boats, food, movies....

Michael. Wake up and realize...maybe you can change the system..

Timo..Would you say that companies like NONS, Birdnest, Massproduktion,
House of Kicks, Energy Rekords, Burning Heart and other quite small
companies from Sweden are the money elite ?

Yes, i agree that life is a bitch. i also agree that in a planet with a
population well over 6 billion, an industry is needed... and yes, i would
like to think of music as something higher and more pure than just a small
part of consumerism... so i won't end up agreing on everything with you,
i'll just say that i don't think video is necessary (actually i don't think
it's even good), and you forgot to mention vinyl. come on, there must have
been talk at MIDEM about the new rise of vinyl? and i don't mean just
elitist fringe-rock assholes like me.

>Timo..Would you say that companies like Nons, Birdnest,Massproduktion,House

no, don't think so. i just wanted to say that i didn't (and still don't)
believe that MIDEM is such a big deal to the record companies. but all in
all i was just using that article as an exhaust pipe for my gargantual
existential angst and discust to a lot of things, so don't take it personally.

Subject: Karma Kain

Not just a living mail office but also a booking agency :-). Well, I know
some people here organizes live concerts every now and then so I just
thought I should do some "marketing" for a band which has contacted me and
asked me to help them get a gig, for them, on _May 2nd_.

Karma Kain, from Uppsala, is the name of the band. They describe their
music as "american indie". If you have read the latest issue of Sound
Affects you know that their demo was almost named "demo of the issue".
Ninni Brunnberg wrote: "Somewhat muddled ´grunge´with some features of the
70´s..."
; "The heavy sound, together with Girilal Baars light and very
special voice, constitutes a peculiar mix..."
and that the songs are "too
good for just being on a demo"
.

Perhaps the word ´grunge´makes you suspicious but I think it is far more
interesting, with much better lyrics, than other bands categorized under
that definition.

So, the band plays in Stockholm on May 1st and in Uppsala on May 3rd. If
you are interested in having this band play live, at least on the same
continent as these two cities, do not hesitate to contact me or (much
better, in fact) Karma Kains vocalist Girilal Baars (who is also joining
our list soon) at:
baars@bahnhof.se

The band also wants you to know that they play for a small sum of money,
"money for soup" is quite enough.

/Micke, who knows this is not a marketing place, but that doesn´t seem to
stop other people so... :-)

No, not really. I just don't like when music is streamlined into some sort
of mass consumption commodity supposed to be sold to as many people as
possible (like some of the artists who appeared at MIDEM are excellent
examples of). You say that marketing is needed by everyone but I know that
one of the key phrases in marketing (which I have studied) is that good
products market themselves - they always find their consumers.

>To an incredible large number of musicians, music-enthusiasts etc these

I just wonder if these fairs get so little attention because, as you say,
people don't know about them or because people don't think they are so
important as you claim. Any musicians, media people or other
music-enthusiasts on this list who has an answer to this?

Well, I'm trying but I'm always too tired after waking up so it is no idea

It is definitely interesting to see that such a general thing as
a music fair generates these steamy feelings. And I do agree somewhat
with both "sides" if we can talk about sides - but I think that it
is mostly a question about attitude, location and time.

If MIDEM was held in Stockholm, Helsinki or Oslo for example, I'd
think that most labels we have seen mentioned in the discussion would
be represented. I think it is also time to realise that the music
industry is no longer only represented by the major/big companies,
but more and more by the medium/smaller ones. And I think we can all
see this by the fact that companies like NONS and Dolores did show
up at this year's MIDEM in Cannes. Just wait and see - next year's
fair will surely see more smaller labels represented.

The fact that MIDEM has been the place for the majors before is still
a very prominent feeling among smaller labels, who are reluctant to go
there because of it - "it's not for us" etc. But like I said, the wind
has changed, and the medium/smaller labels take bigger pieces of the
market these days.

Some little gossip, that maybe isn't that interesting, but I'm in a
gossip mode today:

I chatted with Pontus (the bass player) from Fidget the other day. I
asked him if I he had some nice gossip to share, but he said that there
were nothing much to tell. He almost thought that they would need a
little scandal. Anyway, if I would have brought a camera I could have
taken a nice picture of Pontus dressed like an angel walking the streets
of gbg. (Well, I myself and another 30 people were dressed similar...)

I got to know that Louise lost her effect pedals on their release party
- for the second time. Either Louise doesn't look after her stuff, or
someone is seriously collecting Fidget effect pedals.

They have some nice gigs to look forward too, but would certainly
appreciate a few more dates. I bet they will be visiting UK for a short
tour this summer, but Pontus didn't reveal any plans.

Another friend of Pontus revealed that he sent him a fake fan mail.
Pontus didn't fall for it though, he suspected that it was a practical
joke from the beginning. And no one was surprised when we got to know
who it was who sent it...

Finally Pontus said, that his greatest motivation and inspiration are
those people that are almost fanatically overwhelmed by their music.
Some of you are on this list btw. So lets keep feeding our favourite pop
stars with energy and motivation - one day or another they will give us
that perfect song or gig in return...

Well, I just feel it is time for me as some sort of "moderator" of this
list to say something about the recent messages on this list. I'm
not complaining - and I don't moderate the list at all - it is free
as a bird, but ...

First, I don't know if it's just that the summer is just around
the corner and we're all irritated, working hard these last few
months, and can't stand the strange changes in the weather, cold
one day, hot the next. Whatever it is, I see no need for the kind
of personal attacks we've seen lately.

With personal attacks I mean these "Hey X, you're crazy if you..."
messages, or if someone posts something in another language than
english, or posts some information that doesn't interest you, and
you tell the person not to post such information. It's just a matter
of respecting other people's views and thoughts, and maybe the
information posted interested someone else - right?

So instead of insulting people, just say you don't agree with whatever
it was he/she wrote, and why. And if someone posts a message in another
language, it is easy enough to just tell them that the list only works
if everyone use english. And if you find a message with information
you're not interested in, just delete it. It's as simple as that.
Too many lists have died because of flame wars.

Second - I'd like to thank everyone who posts to the list - we're
over 300 people on the list, which should cater for an active list,
just like we have seen the last couple of days. Alkberg poetry, Honey
Is Cool info, Fidget info, EMI trouble, MIDEM discussion, Scotts (whom
I've never heard of - which means I second Robert's request for more
information as it really sounds interesting!), Cardigans homepage etc.

That is exactly how at least I want the list to look like. So don't
stop posting because of this message - I only wanted to say what I
thought as a fellow list member.

vip tickets cost about 175 pounds ca 1800 kr for 3 days (I think)
I only know one fresh Swedish company with resources that will be there,

But it's no surprice, if it cost as much as the music fair in Gothenburg, I
think it was
10,000 kr per square meter

Subject: Sloppy

Hi all,

...a short review of the Sloppy show at 1000fryd sat. 5/4:

Sloppy is by far the best Danish band in the techno/industrial scene, and
has sold quite a few records throughout Europe under the name Sloppy
Wrenchbody (though not very many in dk). I was responsible for the show at
1000fryd, so maybe I'm not very objective about this, but here it is:
Sloppy is totally awesome.

They started their set about 20 past ten with sinister, minimalistic
techno. Only the keyboard player was on stage, and it was almost totally
dark, so even though the music was quite good it started getting a bit
boring after 15-20 minutes. Fortunately the rest of the band went on stage
then, and the party began. The singers stage presence is incredible, the
drummer (it was only his third gig with sloppy I was told later) was
incredibly tight, and the guitarist churned out noises like a ten ton
truck. Their new material sound like an updated and more energetic version
of "TV Sky" era Young Gods or something, but in my opinion more varied and
better. It just got better and better, and even the 15 minutes of pure
techno they ended with at 12 had people jumping around and dancing like
crazy.

I spoke to them afterwards, and they are currently looking for a record
company to put out their new songs. The demo tape I received with
the raw mixes are excellent, and apparently they're looking for a major,
so I guess it's not indie anymore (but who cares, as long as it's good
music).

Oh, and they're really nice people, too.

js

PS: Sorry about the lousy review.

I think I'll take a peek at it. You know, sometimes the texts to the songs
have a lot more depth than the music itself! I tend to be a listener of the
music first, then the lyric, and I always get mad at myself for that! Is
there anyone who really listens to the words intensely from the start?

they don't want to be called Kent copies...

Bad news for some american people and good news for those living near
Uppsala. Since Komeda had some troubles with their visa they will not be
able to play in Los Angeles tomorrow. This is the only Komeda-gig in USA to
be cancelled. As some kind of compensation Komeda will do a gig at Kalmar
Nation in Uppsala on monday (april 14th). (Source: NONS Records - the same
goes for the Wannadies drummer news of yesterday).

Question: Anyone who has been able to identify the bonus track (track 18)
on the "A twist of lime" compilation from Harry Lime records?

I watched Petrol play live at Herrgarn yesterday. I don't really dislike
their music, though I like other "girl-pop" bands (like Lush, Bangles and
Belly) much better. Petrol's singles has passed my ears, leaving the word
"nice" remaining in my head. But I can't really say they were an exciting
live act. I don't demand that artists performing live should move around
like maniacs but I like to see them showing _some_ sign of being alive! The
girls were smiling, at least, but the accompanying musicians looked as if
they wanted to be somewhere else. Funny, but I have a strong feeling that
Erik will soon say that he disagrees with me (I saw you bouncing around
with that camera around your neck :-) ).

Well, being a Petrol fan, of course I disagree. :-) I thought they
were great - their live sound/vocals amazingly close to their records.
I do agree with you when it comes to the band (the guys) though,
and that feeling only got stronger when everyone in the band left
except for Jenny and Camilla when I asked the first question for
the interview. I did ask them (the girls) about it, but they said
the guys were happy, though I'm not sure I believe them. But I guess
that's the way it is - the guys _are_ just accompanying musicians,
no more, no less.

Photos + the small pieces of information from the interview will
be posted on the SIN web.

Oh, by the way, list member Petter Tiilikainen assaulted (joke) me
during the gig! Quite a surprise to find him here in Linkoping. :-)
Petter - thanks for the help with the interview!

Oh yeah - if anyone is wondering why I'm sort of "gone" from the
list these days - I'm tied up with loads of projects at the univ.
as well as looking for a real job as I have graduated (finally).

And if anyone wonders whatever happened to the Sound Affects web
site premiere thing-a-palooza - it is all ready to be launched
except for a few vital pieces that I'm _still_ waiting for from
the chief editor, whom we all know as JL. He has promised to send
the stuff every time I have called the last three-four weeks,
but I have yet to receive it. As soon as I do receive it, the
site is open and I'll let you know.
