Yeah yeah, tons of orange paper. 64 channels, but nothing on. Teh say

Totally agree. I saw Freewheel live two days ago and they were completely
lovely. Ok, maybe 1-2 songs were a bit dull, but the rest is quite charming
pop music. Like Mommyheads & Paul Simon combined a bit with Ben Folds Five.
Yeah, charming is the word.

I dont think Freewheel have any intentions to do country music actually.
Think they are doing pop music in a quite old classic vein, but maybe with
a little country feel to it. But I agree that people should listen to all
those bands you mentioned, especially Palace.

Hey, wait just a second. Freewheel from Lund? Ok, the singer is originally
from Akarp which is pretty much right between Malmo and Lund and he has
lived as much in Malmo as in Lund. The bassplayer is definitely from Malmo
and the rest of them are from Stockholm.
By the way, I think the singer sings great - the lyrics I am not that
into. What I am trying to say is that Freewheel is a really good band and
that they dont deserve those harsh words.

And just out of interest: how can you hear when a band is from Lund? Just
curious? Because I thought so too before, but nowadays that scene is pretty
much gone. Loosegoats, Sideshow Bob, Satanic Surfers, Craftworld,
Langhorns, Favorita, Chunks, In A Spring are all bands that dont sound much
like they are from Lund, do they? What bands of today in Lund sound like
they are from Lund? Maybe Super Eight Group, Soul Ryders, Thirdimension
(recently signed to Telegram), but I am not even sure that they are
typically Lundish. So tell me what is.

Jan Sundstrom wrote:

Neither I guess. Club 8 dont get that much attention in Sweden, but they
are quite huge in the southern parts of Europe. Our college radio show
TANDEM had the Club 8-songwriter Johan Angergard as guest last week and he
said that Club 8 were out looking for a new label, while his other band
Acid House Kings were about to release an album in the US. I think the
label was called Shelflife.

Probably. Sounds like a great show. Those two times I have seen Loosegoats
play unplugged is probably two of the best shows I have ever seen a swedish
band do. Their latest single "Disdialogic" gave a hint on what to come from
Loosegoats, because the b-sides were, in my opinion, the best things they
have done so far (if you forget about one of the songs there). So if you
are in the neighbourhood, I definitely think you should see this gig.

Take care!

Well, I have only seen them once, and then I left after 2 songs. I
couldn't stand it. Maybee they get better if your able to watch a whoul
show:)

The bands you drop above have something to say, and puts some kinds of
feelings into their audience. I want more from a band than just a
"charming" feeling. I have nothing against good pop music. But Freewheel
ain't one.

This may sound a bit hilarious and ridiculous, but to me Lund is a
"musical state of mind". Bands from Lund are so often so "right". A lot
of them are 90% style, music and fashion, and 10% fresh musical ideas.
Bands like Loosegoats, Sideshow bob and the Satanic surfers are good
examples. How "new" is their music? They are just copys, both musically
and fashionably of their own favourites. Not to mention Super Eight
group and the other two(huuu....).
Maybe Favorita tries to do something of thier own. To bad they play so
boring music.
I like Chunks and In A Spring. But how original do they sound?

Btw,
I guess that in a couple of months there will be 10 bands from Lund that
sounds and looks like Radiohead and/or The Veeeeerrrrrrvvveeeeeee.

Excuse me, but does every band have to have an original sound? Sure, it's
rather sad when a band copy other songs, but complaining about their music
as a whole because it sounds a bit like other bands; why?

That would be absolutely lovely IMHO. As long as their songs don't sound
exactly like "Fake Plastic Trees" or "The Drugs Don't Work" that is!

> /Mats, Malmo

Yes, it's pretty obvious that you're from Malmo. Why is it so hard for
people from Malmo to appreciate Lund and like the people living here?

I suppose it's a a bit of a "hate-chain": Helsingborg hates Malmo and
Malmo hates Lund. Reasons? Well, Helsingborg hates Malmo beacause they
have a better football team. Malmo hates Lund because of the university
and our so called "posh" accent. In a word: Jelousy.

So Club 8 has left Siesta? Or were they never "really" signed to Siesta?
That may explain why the nice Siesta-people recently unsubscribed from

I'm not sure if they are "huge" in southern Europe, but it's true that all
the Scandinavian "twee" bands are much better appreciated outside of
Scandinavia. It's just appalling to see that the Club 8 album is probably
still consistently in the "Tweenet Charts" (a monthly poll where you can
vote for your favorite albums at the Tweenet site) after being out since
1996 (? - can't check because I loaned the disc out last night). BTW, the
7" which preceded the album is now sold out at the label, and it's
definitely worth having (I'd say that there are only 4 songs on the album
which are as good as the three on the 7"), so if you see it, consider
yourselves warned.

I'm guessing that this will be the album which was released on Harmony a
few months ago in Japan? It's called Advantage and I think it's by far the
best thing AHK have done. The production is a huge leap beyond bedroom
fidelity, and the result is much richer, organic, and at times much more
(effectively!) melancholy than I would have previously expected. They've
got a female singer now, who does the lead vocals on 3 or so of the tracks,
and her voice is gorgeous. As if that weren't enough, there's also a tiny
wooden clothespin trapped inside the CD's plastic case.

And while we're on the topic of under-appreciated wimpy pop bands, may I
also recommend Den Baron? I just got this wonderful 7" on the Apricot
label (Germany, but I understand that the artist - it's just one guy - is
Swedish). Happy/sad guitar and bedroom keyboard stuff. The last song is
absolutely lovely and features one of the best titles I've read in ages:
"I can see the flowers in the garden through the window but I can't touch
them".

Enjoy,
Alexander

Here ya go:

Final solution.

The girls won't touch me cause I got a misdirection,
and livin at night isn't helpin my complexion
The signs all say it's a social infection
A little bit of fun's never been an insurrection

Mom threw me out til I get some pants that fit
She just don't approve of my strange kind of wit
I get so excited I always gotta lose it,
then they pack me off & make me take the cure
But I don't need a cure,
don't need a cure
don't need a cure,
need a final solution

Buy me a ticket to a sonic reduction
Guitars gonna sound like a nuclear destruction
It seems I'm the victim of natural selection,
or maybe just another slide in another direction
I don't need a cure,
don't need a cure
don't need a cure,
need a final solution

Solution!

I guess that wasn't meant for the list... right?

Tomorrow: Jari Haapalainen

Jari - solo? Anyone?

true true. I happen to pass by when they played in Folkorock and though I am
not into such music, I thought they were really cool. I think there is
nothing wrong in playing good "copy" music. One cannot "demand" talent from
the band, everyone does what they can, copy or original, and if they do it
good, then really it is good enough. Cant jump higher than your head, as we
say in russian.

Yes, Jari solo, but he's only playing records. He usually does that once a
week. (At K that is... :) ) I heartly recommend you to go there, though he
plays mostly soul/60's stuff, sounding nothing like BQ.

BQ (and Celeste) are currently recording new material at Pelle Fireside's
new studio. Just you watch out!

I'm not talking about just the music here. I'm talking about the whole
style some bands from lund adapt. And how this changes from year to year
depending on wich bands are popular.

I have lived in Lund and is sitting here right now.
I got really tired of Lund and moved to Malmo. It wasn't
just the musical thing. It was all the students too. When your not
a student anymore, theres really not much to do here. And I got so tired
of seeing all the "small" students everywhere.

I know I'm very subjective now. I have had very fun in Lund and will
have it many times more. I have a lot of friends here, and some of them
play in really good bands.

I guess you're right in a way.
But why do Lund hate Malmo? Becuase it's dirtier, poorer and uglier?

/Mats - working in Lund. Listening to Micke Fants TRIOs 12" "Anna Let me
in Let me out." Do you want it back soon?

Diamanda Galas,
Jorgen Petterson, saxofon
Susanne Rosenberg, sang
Kulturhuset, Stockholm 28 mars

She's one weird chick, but it could be interesting. Something for
Marten Sahlen?!
