Thich Nhat Hanh, affectionately called "Thay", is an exiled Vietnamese monk, a former professor at the University of Saigon, peace activist and poet. He was once a student at Columbia University and was recalled to Vietnam, then at war, to help with the third Way of Reconciliation, an attempt at a viable alternative to the corruption of Saigon and the communism of Hanoi. He established Van Hahn University, and the School of Youth for Social Service, which worked to help the peasantry in rural war-torn areas. Thay coined the term "Engaged Buddhism" in his book VIETNAM: LOTUS IN A SEA OF FIRE. In 1967, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King, Jr. He is perhaps best known for his books THE MIRACLE OF MINDFULNESS and BEING PEACE. He presently lives Plum Village, Meyrac, France, and teaches throughout the world.
