The difference, as I have been lead to believe it, is that Mac owners
can buy Mac ROMs from Apple dealers. ST owners cannot buy disk based
TOS from ANYWHERE. Am I wrong? Where CAN I buy it?

Cheers,

pc_ddrvr.sys is a TSR program supplied with PC-Ditto to allow ATARI
partitions D,E,F etc to be accessed from MS/DOS running under the
emulater. It has no other magical properties.

Are there any database packages for the ST that allow you to access the
database through C programs (like Btrieve, etc. for the PC's)? I would like
to use an SQL database if possible. The only SQL db for the ST that I have
heard of is RegentBase. Does it provide these C 'hooks' that I need? Or is
this a lost cause for ST development?

Subject: Floppy troubles (1040stf)

I am having several problems with my (DS internal) floppy drive. It
seems that if I don't access the drive for several minutes it
stops working. For example, if I double click on a folder the
file listing becomes corrupt (the disk does not spin). If I
pop the disk out and replace it, it works fine (unless I don't
access it for awhile). I ran VKILLER 2.2 on my boot disk, no
virus. By the way I have a z-time clock chip installed under
one of the roms (ver. 1.2) with software in the auto folder to drive
it.
Also, when I pop a disk out of the floppy drive the button pops
out as if there is a disk still in it. In order to put in another
disk I have to hold the eject button in until the disk is inserted.
How can I fix this!
Thank in advance

Hi all,

I used to have a 520 st system for about 4 years, then sold the
whole system in order to have money for college.

Now i am in college, and I need a computer.

I would like input as to what you all think I should do.

If the MAC and IBM emulators are good enough I will get a Mega 2 or 4,
but i have been out of it for a few years and dont know
how these programs are. Any and all information will be
appreciated.

Well, I can be reached at .../gtephx!covertr. FORCE is a node on our
Apollo network. Just try gtephx!covertr.

Greg, the problem is one of timing. By the time Atari got the TOS 1.4 PROMs
out, and notice that they are PROMS not ROMs, bugs had already been identified
and repaired by hackers. Since, the offical TOS ROMs still haven't been
released,
it is not unreasonable to hope that Atari would fix the known bugs before
releasing
them. I just hate to see TOS 1.4 start off with a bunch of auto folder patches!!
And there is still no legal way to buy TOS 1.4 in 100 ns EPROMs so that the
Turbo16 can run at full speed. T16 can be setup to access the TOS memory without
wait states if the memory is quick enough. Hence the need for 100 ns EPROMs.
If Atari was selling TOS in ROMs it might be possible to buy them in 100ns
roms. who knows??

Greg, the user already needs an auto folder patch for the TOS 1.4 that is being
sold by Atari. How many more patches will be needed over the next six months??

And finally, Greg, I have stopped asking Dave Small for a 300 dpi QuickDraw
driver for the SLM804. As you have just said it appears to be too hard for
Dave Small, or anyone else, to develop. So, whose fault is it?? Atari?? Apple??
GBS?? All I know is that when I bought my Spectre 128 from Dave Small in Sept
1988, Dave said that he would provide a 300 dpi driver for the SLM804 laser
printer. And now over a year later it has proven to be an impossible task.
The best that Dave can do is 144 dpi, which is basically just draft printing
on a 300 dpi laser printer. so, while I am not satisified with the Spectre
printer driver for the SLM804, at least I know that Dave gave it his best
shot!! So, I am NOT flaming GBS. I am just waiting for GBS to release the
Spectre version 2.0 software so that I can use my SLM804 laser printer in
144 dpi mode.

I've had my Atari since almost day one (before 1st word was invented) and
have used STwriter. It has been improved a lot, but is still part of the
public domain. It is not a wysiwyg, but has a lot of features such
as 2 column printing and mail merge. I still use it a lot.

Has anyone ported tangle to the Atari ST?

Tangle is the program that converts Don Knuth's language Web to Pascal.

Subject: uudecode

What does it mean when uudecode gives the message "short file"? Obviously
it is an error of some sort, because the files extracted are cut off. I also
sometimes get an error simply stated "Error 0". This occurs after a previous
part has failed. Does uudecode add to a previous file sometimes? If I try
to get the binary again, will it still fail, or is the error perhaps
generated in the mail transfer? Any info is appreciated.
