Thank you all for your help. There was even one that didn't
contain nonsense. The correct answers, though, were posted by
Ken Badertscher of ATARI:

One straight Fread() is the fastest way to load a file
(except maybe a first-read-FAT, then
read the tracks from the center to the
edge of the disk- but what IS the center
and what IS the edge? I always write CLEAN software)

The AES does NOT send WM_NEWTOP messages. (anyone who does
not care about porting to an IBM can leave the
WM_NEWTOP case out, and save about 8 bytes)

Ken is the only one that deserves the promised free copies and updates.

I just added an external drive to a 1040 st, and it seems no matter which
disk it is accessing, a, or b, the external drive will spin (noisily) as long
as the a drive is spinning. The a drive however, does not spin while accessing
the b drive. Is this a common problem? Just curious... the only problem
I have with this is the external drive is 3 times as loud as the internal one
and would prefer it not to spin unless it had to.

G++ 1.39.1 is available on atari.archive, in gnustuff/tos/g++. libg++
is also included.

G++ needs a *lot* of memory - 2Mb to be able to run the compiler, and
4Mb to do anything serious. The use of a hard disk goes without saying....
You also need a recent GCC incarnation - the necessary bits and pieces
should also be on a.a.

The only UK site I've uploaded it onto is CIX, which you can't access
via FTP or E-mail - you have to be a member of CIX.

We were attending the Atari Messe show in Germany and were unable to upload our
POWs for the last three weeks of August. I have just done so to terminator and
the binaries newsgroup.

The programs are:

DC Mouse-ometer will let you know how far your mouse has travelled
during your hard-at-work or just-having-sessions on the computer.
Suggested by a friend of a "Mac user with this neat little mouse
gadget."

---------
DC Run Rez automagically switches screen resolution for files that don't
do so on their own.

Just say no to "Please switch to ???? resolution" alerts!

---------
DC Light Off will turn off your floppy disk drive (and light) after you
have booted up. Useful when you boot up without a floppy disk inserted in
the drive. Suggested by Larry Novak.

All programs 100% assembly, ST, STe and TT compatible. Program of the week.

A while ago (two month ?!) I posted a deskjet/epson printer file
previewer (called "showgs") to comp.binaries.atari.st. It was
written for ghostscript 2.1 which lacked a screen driver.
One of the nice features of "showgs" was the option to spool
the image to the SLM 804 (<S> key).

>Can anyone use the included driver on an epson 9 pin? It *almost*

In ghostscript 2.2 the generated printer codes for the epson
driver have been changed giving lots of people problems. The
changes will be undone in the next release of ghostscript.

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if Megamax (if that's what the company is still
called) is still selling the source to Megaroids??

I got the game long ago. I misplaced on one of my disks and now I've
finally found just exactly where I've kept it all these years! (:-) )

Anyways, looking at the game now, I really want to look at the source
and hopefully pick up some techniques for motion and collision
detection.

I tried it. It has serious problems with large dialogs -- they move
around well enough, but images of the mouse pointer are left splattered
all over the screen. Charles F. Johnson (Codehead Software) said LetEmFly
appeared to break a number of programming rules and recommended against
using it. There is a similar program from Gribnif Software, but I haven't
tried it; perhaps someone could post a comparison.

I received some ST software sight unseen from a buddy of mine. Mostly
garbage but with one interesting program. It is called "Little Computer
People", from Activision 1985/1986 on the original disk. It is a simulation
of a house with a little guy and dog (intended for children). I find it
moderately humorous (you can run him around by ringing the telephone and
alarm clock, have him play games with you, play songs on his organ, play
records on his stereo, etc). I did not receive any documention with the
disk whatsoever. I have figured out lots of stuff through experimentation,
but would like to get the full docs. Does anyone have a copy they wish to
sell? Anyone seen it in a bargin bin somewhere? I wish to purchase a complete
copy, with docs.

Hey, don't snicker! I may have a brat or two one day and they might like
it (ok, so it's really me who wants to play with it).

This can be done, yes. Instead of the dedicated modem hardware/firmware you
would be using CPU cycles on the main processor of your computer (ST).
There is a disadvantage with this approach if you want to multitask with other
programs. On a plain vanilla ST there might not be enough cycle bandwidth
to keep up with the transfer at full speed and do whatever else you are doing
at an acceptable speed.

So, where is such a program available for the ST / TT ?
Are there any legal complications involved? (patented compression methods etc.)

>the program would have to be run on both ends (encode/decode)

The other end could have a full-feature modem instead.

Subject: Railroad Tycoon: MONEY
To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu

Hello friends,

I dunno if this helps, I hope it will. Sorry if everybody already knows this or
if this special feature does only work on my IBM PS/2.

Yes, I have no mac, amiga or atari, so sorry for polluting these newsgroups.

For having quite much money on Railroad Tycoon, try to take control of another
railroad company at just more than 50% of its capital. Then, transfer as much
money as possible to your company and sell shares up to exactly 50%. At this
point, the owner will probably try to get a 500'000$ bond. When this is done,
but again 10'000 shares and tranfer money to your company. Repeat up to the
point when you see the company cannot afford more bonds. Then wait. Two things
can happen:
1) the company is dissolved (no good for us)
2) it stays, but profit and cash is red and quite high.
If point (2) occurs, on my PS/2 anyway this sometimes happen, I only have to
wait until the red cash amount gets up to about 25'000'000$ and then it gets
back to positive (black) amount. You'll see when it does change, because the
company starts again paying back bonds. But don't let them pay back their
bonds; instead, take control of it. You now only have to tranfer money (about
26 million dollars) to your company and be president of the United States.

I hope this helps and that it's well explained. If not, send me a mail and I'll
try to get it clearer. But in short:

1) Take control of a company

2) Let them get as many bonds as they can

3) when profit is red and cash also, sell shares. Only keep 50%.

4) Wait some years, until cash is black again

5) When you see the company pays back their bonds, take again control of it.

6) Tranfer the 26 million to your company and start the whole thing again...

Cordially.
