Hello,
I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. Static Line took a break
last month; being the holiday season, nothing much was happening. But
we're back in full swing again this month, with all the regular articles -
On The Sideline, The Lineup, Screen Lit Vertigo and Coplan's Eyes.
I bought a couple of scene products recently - the Assembly '02 DVDs and
NAIDorabilia. They look pretty good so far - believe it or not, I've never
actually been to a demoparty, but after seeing these I definitely want to
go to one. We'll see how it all works out. :)

I'm not sure if your magazine would be interested in covering the new
DVD-ROM we just released (our first). In a nutshell it's virtually every
ANSI/VGA artpack, cracktro/loader and emag ever released. The magazine
collection in particular is very extensive including zines from all facets
of the PC-scene (ansi, demo, music and yes, even early-day warez).
There seems to be some confusion by those who are unfamiliar with the
FTP site we used to operate from 1996-2003 called "artpacks.acid.org", so
I think at first glance some people will assume that this is a collection
of just ACiD releases. But rather it is a compilation of the files we
used to offer before we lost our two main hosts in the USA. (We still
have 3 rather large mirrors in Sweden, Australia and at ftp.scene.org and
some other smaller ones)
Anyways I don't mean to bore anyone. If this sounds like something
the readers would like to know about, then I'd love to answer any
questions you might have. I've posted an allfiles list on scenespot.org,

review it myself but I've recently bought two other scene products (see

On The Sideline
"On The Buses (blakeymix)" by H. Kylloenen and "Rhino" by Illusion

Greetings. This month I am going to review some songs that were released
under the the label Milk. This group has produced a good deal of
excellent music. Both of these songs are upbeat, minimal, and mildly
ambient in style. If you enjoy playful and buoyant music, you might want
to give them a listen.
-=- "On The Buses (blakeymix)" by H. Kylloenen -=-
"On The Buses" is a 4-song EP release by H. Kylloenen. You can read
about the release at http://milk.scene.org/onthebuses.html . The majority
of these songs were serious and direct. But "On The Buses (blakeymix)"
stood out from the rest with its own unique style. This particular
selection is mellow, dreamy -- almost a lullaby. So I shall share with
you my thoughts about "blakeymix."
The introduction slides in with a string orchestra and a mild humming
synth. It sounds like a song you might hear played with a sunrise. The
quietly echoed speech in the background adds a nice touch, as if waking up
to the sound of other people starting their day. The song gains momentum
as it goes on with a simple drumline and simpler theme. A whisper of a
choir carries the flow of the song, and a synth similar to a woodwind
drifts peacefully as the instruments unfold.
I liked the solemn yet lighthearted tone of "On The Buses (blakeymix)".
In my opinion the simplicity of this song's theme is both its strength and
weakness. On one hand, the length of the song is short compared to the
ambling pace, and the theme gets a little repetitive. That's the price
this song payed for bordering on ambient: Just when I started to feel the
scene being set for some unfocused contemplation, the song fades out. It
needs to exhibit more ideas, either by expounding further, or by quicker
variation. On the other hand, the song genuinely sets a fresh, fairy-tale
mood. I would encourage a learning tracker to try to extend this song as
a fun exercise. H. Kylloenen sets many good examples in his songs, and
this one is no exception.

"Rhino" is a much merrier song. There is a bit of an organ to lay the
foundation, and then the drum loops bust out, crisp and well pronounced.
I really enjoyed the flippant synths together with the tiny bells. Both
the organ and the synth leads have a vocal quality about them with their
"mmm's", "mwah's", and "tralala's". I think they were well selected to
match the funky rhythm of this song.
At the very end of the song there is speech saying "It'll be a new
experience for you.". Perhaps the song was meant to be played backwards.
;)
I found this song very satisfying. It is infectious and makes one feel
like moving a bit. Go ahead, sway a little; it makes the song sound
better.

The Lineup

Welcome to The Lineup! Every month, I scour through the hundreds of new
releases on the scene's major archive sites to find the best new music,
saving you the trouble of having to download 20 instant-delete songs to
find 1 that's worth keeping.
Since Static Line took a month off, this edition of The Lineup will
actually cover two months: November and December. I'll select a Best of
the Best for each of those months, as well as The Lineup's top song of
2003.
I'm also changing my methods for finding songs for The Lineup. Before, I
was simply grabbing new releases from Cute Trance Girls, MODPlug Central,
Scene.org, Scene Satellite Network, Paleface's Song Archive, S3M.com, and
Sounding Board. Now, I'm also scanning through various individual and
group websites as well. If you'd like me to add your site to my monthly

(Keep in mind that I do NOT scan The MOD Archive for new songs because of
the weirdness that rules their Unfiltered Uploads page. I've tried to keep

The demo:
Red is a theme demo centered on blood: it starts in a medical lab, with a
microscope, a centrifuge etc. RGBA uses a glow effect (like in Farbrauschs
The Popular Demo, but more rough) that gives the white room a very bright,
sterile feeling. The centrifuge, containing a number of blood-filled
testtubes, starts to spin, until one of the tubes flings away...
The rest of the demo is more effect-based, but still with plenty of 3D: a
hyperkinetic virus traveling through veins, a high-tech room with a
heartlike living center, or the really nice silvery/transparent blob.
Besides the glow effect, other full-screen postprocessing effects used are
water ripples, radial blur, motion blur and some 3D deformation of a
hallway that looks as if you're drunk. 2D is used sparsely, the "RED" logo
is quite cool, and there's a girl-face picture that appears with a reverse
pixelising effect. The greets are done on TVs (how original, yawn), and
the demo closes with a fine RGBA logo made of hundreds of tiny shuffling
red boxes.
The music is a typical synth-track, with bells and a lot of variation in
the percussion. It's rather happy and energetic considering the mood of
the visuals at the start, but otherwise it follows the demo very closely:
it speeds up and slows down with the effects on the screen, has
soundeffects for the 3D scenes, and never gets too repetitious.
Overall:
BCN judged demos on sound, gfx and effect separately, and Red got 1596,
1872 and 2508 points respectively (only on sound did anyone do better). So
it's a well-balanced demo, but the code indeed accounts for the biggest
chunk of it's success. Its only shortcoming IMHO is that it's barely 3
minutes, but those are well worth the dowload.

The demo:
This new 2-man group got the second place at BCN, quite an accomplishment
for a new group. Mirages refer to the ghost images seen in deserts, not
to the planes, and the demo follows this theme in a number of ways:
oriental music, an arabic font, and a lamp that grants your wishes. At the
same time, it asks you what your dream is (and give several possible
answers), and the feeling of those parts clash a bit with the oriental
atmosphere IMHO.
Most of the visuals are done with pictures and moving 2D textures. The
pictures are average to OK, but if you factor in that they're all done by
the coder it's already more impressive (we coders are by definition not
known for our graphic skills :)) The effects are few and simple, there's a
tunnel, and some warping of 2D to simulate 3D (the lamp, the camera reel).
The 3D models are equally simple: a ball, cogs, and a flower, but they're
always used together with pictures to reinforce each other.
The music is the best part of the demo, it starts slowly with oriental
voices and gongs, but those are quickly joined by a nice rhythm section.
Later it hesitates between an ambient and orchestral sound, with an
occasional piano lead, flutes, and loud percussion. New parts start
following the music changes, but the syncing of objects (sudden jumps on
the beats) is overdone and doesn't fits the mood (the lamp or the cogs
f.e.)
Overall: Mirages is not a bad start for Sector Omega, it's a bit rough in
places (especially the code) but they compensate for this with a
meditative theme, lots of pics, and excellent music. Check it out if
you're curious what newbies are capable of nowadays!

The demo:
Oh my god! They've gone hardcore! What this demo lacks in quantity (it
lasts only 1:38), it makes up in attitude! This grayscale demo features
heavy weaponry, tunnels, an assembly line for robot heads (I think), a
hairball and love declarations to MFX and Melon. The effects are rather
simple: flashes, flashes and more flashes. Oh, and also exploding
particle-greetings and a 3D flashing raster. The only graphics are a
virus-picture for the credits and the cute shoot-me-through-the-head logo
at startup. The 3D tank looks awesome, to the point I doubt it was either
ripped, or done in far more than a couple of days. The soundtrack (a 194
kb .IT) is aggressive techno, with plenty of repetition, but as the demo
is so short it doesn't have the time to become boring. All flashes and
jumping objects are synced to the beats, of course.
Overall:
As the readme says, it was coded in only 5 nights and shouldn't be taken
too seriously. But if you like techno, and have a sense of humour, Cafre
is something you must see.

Passion

Passion is not tangible. It is not some thought that has been placed in
your head ready to be unplugged if need be. Sadly, passion is somewhat
of an addiction. But it is not an addiction. It is something different.
It is constructive. It is often time consuming and it may lead to
expensive purchases. Alas, but money and time are nothing, because it's
your passion. You can feel it. Everything is going to be fine.
But too many people confuse dedication with passion.
Alas, passion is a want to do something or to have something. My passion
is music. Your passion might be demos. Chances are, if you're reading
this, your passion has something to do with the demoscene. But I could be
wrong. Your passion might BE the demoscene. And you will do whatever you
can to make sure you remain involved.
As a musician, I don't have life so easy. If I were smart, I would've
developed a passion for code. It's a relatively cheap hobby. But alas, I
had to choose music. I had to get myself into the habit of hearing new
music every week. I had to train my ears to hear distortion and
imperfection. I had to do all that. And here I am buying software
synths, top end speakers and other crazy stuff. Here I added well over 40
CDs to my massive collection (though not as massive as some) within the
past couple of months. Give me a gift card to Best Buy, BN.com or Amazon,
and chances are it'll get turned into a CD. And give me a new CD, and
I'll analyze everything on that circle of plastic and foil. I might add
new samples to my sample library (most of which I honestly have never
used). Contrary to popular belief, I write a new song or a riff or a
ditty almost every day. I average about 5 tunes a week. But, most of
them never get finished. Most of them serve only the purpose of stress
relief and relaxation. The reality is that I don't care if no one ever
hears half my stuff. It's for me. It's my passion.
There is always some confusion about passion. Old music artists claim to
have passion. But they don't. They have a record contract that requires
them to pretend that they do. Many artists are successful at releasing
quality music time and time again after decades. David Bowie, David
Byrne, U2 and so on. Others, however, aren't so lucky. But is it luck?
Or is it a fault in the system?
Artists, in my opinion, should not be held to a contract with such
restrictions as you see today. Many well known artists are releasing
albums because they have to...not because they are satisfied with their
music. They have to meet their quota. And the quota is a restriction on
the quality. If you're talking main-stream, the best artists are the ones
who fund their own way. But when it comes down to it, the music with the
most feeling comes from the local bands. The guys that haven't yet been
noticed. The guys who play in bars just to be heard. They might have a
CD, but they paid for it themselves. And you often can't get the CD
unless you're at the bar. And these guys are good. They play with
conviction. They play with passion. They surely don't do it for the
money. Chances are they are loosing money. But they love what they're
doing, and they love their music. And they'll do anything to make sure
they can keep playing it.
And that, my friends, is passion.
So don't tell me about the latest crap from Van Halen or Metallica. Those
bands don't make music anymore, they just make money. They could care
less about their fan base beyond the paycheck. They don't care about the
music anymore. They only write the music because they don't know what
else to do. If you want my respect, you have to show me that you love
what you're doing. You have to show me that you're having fun. You have
to get up on stage and carry a presence, as if you really want to be
there. Experiment. Take chances. Do it just so that you can say you did
it. And if it isn't appreciated, at least you tried. Passion is not the
game of safety. It is a way of life. It becomes your life. And it
should radiate from your soul. Show me that, and then I will have respect
for you.
Passion is appreciated everywhere. Without passion, there are no
guarantees.
