Two little birds

Yesterday, at the market, I bought two little birds. Interestingly, each bird had a metallic ring on the right leg.
I was just wondering: how was the ring put on the poor little bird foot ?
It is obvious that the ring cannot be inserted from the bird foot, being the diameter of it too little ...
... but, at the same time, the ring appears to be made from a single piece of metal with no apparent joints.
Has the bird been wearing this ring since he was born ?
