Hi everyone, and welcome to the SOUND BLASTER DIGEST, the
world's largest Sound Blaster monthly newsletter.

You have probably already noted that this month's edition is
a bit smaller then those of the past few months. Being that this
is our end-of-year issue, we are going to basically wrap up
everything that has happened in the Sound Blaster and SBD worlds.
This month we will publish our Annual SBD Index, the history of
the Sound Blaster according to the SBD, and we are going to
announce the start of the official SBD Support BBS, where you can
call and download the newest digest, leave a note to either Todd,
Karen or myself, talk about any Sound Blaster topic in one of our
many message conferences, etc. Our Assistant Editor will have
more on the BBS in our next article.

This has been an excellent past for us here at the SBD.
We have went from a minor publication to a world-class newsletter,
with contests, special offers, more authors and articles, and
better support all around. We're hoping that 1992 will be even
better: the better we do, the better the Digest becomes!

Although this issue may not be the 30 pages of the past few,
it has still taken many man-hours to prepare, and a lot of hard
work from our small staff of three. So if the size of this issue
disappoints you, think of it as a small break for us. This issue
has taken us a little less time than the previous ones, but
everybody needs a break now and then.

So enjoy the issue! We recommend that you print out our
Index page (if not the whole issue!) and keep it handy for your
reference. Keep on Blasting!

By Todd Clayton

As you probably know, it's word processor slinging time again,
and this time it's special. Yes, I'm typing this on a PS/1 286.
Where on earth did I get such a machine? Well, I am now employed
at a local COMPUCENTRE franchise. Quite the change from
tele-marketing.

Of course, this being the 13th issue, we are offering more of
a wrap-up than an actual issue. The year in review you might say.
At any rate, as usual, I have important news for you all. As of
December 4th 1991, the SOUND BLASTER DIGEST SUPPORT BBS will go
online. We will be operating at 2400 bps, 8 bits, No Parity, and 1
Stop Bit, at (416) 840-2485. But Todd, you ask, what is there that
you have to offer? Well, I'm glad you asked! We offer only the
best .CMF, .MOD, .NST, and .VOC files. We also support all forms
of IBM utilities, Sound Blaster utilities, and other miscellaneous
files. We also offer the exclusive features of direct downloading
of the SBD on the release date. We also offer technical trouble
shooting answered directly by either Brad or I.

So what are you waiting for? Give us a call! You have NO
excuse!

THE SOUND BLASTER TIMELINE:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Written by Brad Barclay.

Here's a basic timeline of the history of the Sound Blaster,
including where the SBD comes into play:

Fall 1988: Creative Labs announces the release of their
Sound Blaster music card at the fall Comdex.
People everywhere hail it as an advancement in
the computer music field. Finally the average
home computer user can afford to have high
quality music on their PC or compatible. With
its compatibility with both the Ad Lib and Game
Blaster cards, plus its digitizing ability,
computer users everywhere start looking for
where they can buy the Sound Blaster.

Feb. 1989: Brad Barclay buys one of the first Sound Blaster
cards sold in Canada, and begins uploading .VOC
files to local Toronto area BBSs in an attempt
to start bringing SB users in the area
together.

Summer 1989: The Sound Blaster cards begin appearing in
stores in both the US and Canada. Before this
time the card was very hard to find in many
places, but during the summer its popularity
grows, and more stores begin selling the card.

Winter 1989: Broderbund releases Prince of Persia, one of the
first commercial games to use both digitized and
synthesized sound for its effects.

Spring 1990: More and more people begin buying and using
Sound Blaster cards. Its popularity grows, and
software publishers begin to recognise it as a
potential new standard in computer music.
Creative Labs removes C/MS chips from the Sound
Blaster, cutting it from 24 voices to only 12.
Many users are outraged at this change in
hardware as being a 'decrease in quality'.
Others see it as the beginning of a new Sound
Blaster, as with the removal of the C/MS chips,
Creative Labs is able to put new and better
software in its package including a player for
its own FM music standard (Creative Music
Format (CMF)), and is able to license text-to-
speech software, along with an application for
it (Dr. Sbaitso).
Page 4

Summer 1990: The Musical Chair moves to Canada, from Kansas
and begins on its journey to becoming the worlds
largest computer-music based BBS.

Aug. 31, 1990: Brad Barclay makes his first call to The Musical
Chair.

Fall 1990: Gary Maddox releases his first version of
Blaster Master, a utility to manipulate .VOC
files. It receives acclaim from many SB users
as being what was needed to fill the infamous
".VOC void".

November 1990: The Sound Blaster Newsletter is started by an
anonymous author, who did a very poor job at
writing a Sound Blaster magazine in the opinion
of most SB users who read it. It was written
more as an E-Mail commentary, and had no
credibility.
Brad Barclay, annoyed at the lack of
professionalism in the SB News talks over the
idea of writing his own SB Newsletter with the
likes of Gary Maddox and Jeff Woods.

Nov. 30 1990: Brad Barclay releases the first edition of the
Sound Blaster Digest to the general public. It
is uploaded to The Musical Chair, which was then
officially deemed the "Home of the SBD".

Dec. 1, 1990: The SBD is released to other BBS systems in the
Toronto area.

Dec. 20 1990: The SBD receives its first letter from Edward
R. Fenton, who encloses his best wishes.

Dec. 28 1990: Brad Barclay mails out the first, and only,
printed copy of the SBD to Mr. Fenton in thanks
for his contribution.

Jan. 1991: Brad Barclay receives his first subscription:
even before he announced any intentions to make
subscriptions available. This spurs him on to
make subscriptions available to the general
public. Brad Barclay drops Adam Thompson as
Assistant Editor, as he was unable to help out
with anything to do with the SBD, due to the
distance between them.

Page 5

Spring 1991: Creative Labs announces the release of the new
Sound Blaster Pro card, capable of full stereo
sound. SB users everywhere wait in eager
anticipation to hear the new multimedia capable
board in action.

June 1991: Creative Labs sends Brad Barclay a pre-release
copy of the Sound Blaster Pro. He immediately
begins plans to support the Pro card in the SBD
as soon as possible. Creative Labs applauds the
efforts of the SBD's staff.

August 1991: The SBD announces the arrival of the SB Pro and
is one of the first publications to give it a
full, comprehensive review.

Fall 1991: The SBD grows to a very large size, partly due
to a sudden surge of subscriptions. Todd
Clayton comes on as the new Assistant Editor,
and starts a new column in the SBD.
The SBD announces the sale of the SBD DEMO TAPE,
in which sales are slow for the first few
months.

November 1991: The SBD celebrates its 12th issue. Sales for
the SBD DEMO TAPE rise more than anticipated.

December 1991: The SBD wraps up its first year of existence.

COMMERCIAL REVIEW: BUDOKAN

Originality: ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ
Value: ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ
Overall: ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ

Budokan supports up to and including VGA Graphics (320x200
resolution),and has the following Sound support: Pc Speaker, Tandy
1000, the CMS Card, the ADLIB Card, and the Roland MT-32.
Unfortunately, there is no official Sound Blaster Support, but the
game is playable emulating the ADLIB Mode. Budokan supports
Keyboard use, as well as one or two joysticks. Playability
declines when using the Joystick however, because many of the
manoeuvres involved in the game are difficult to perform when
using the joystick, but are easily done with the Keyboard.

Budokan is a game wherein you are a Martial Artist with a
high degree of training (at least a Black Belt). You are
proficient in four martial arts: Karate (bare-handed combat),
Kendo (the Way of the Sword), Bojutsu (the Art of the Stave) and
the use of Nunchaku (a sectional rod). In each of the four Dojo
you may practice solo or spar with a partner (the computer). Once
you think you've mastered all of the 30+ moves/attacks of each of
the four Arts, you may test your skill on the mats against either
the computer or a human counterpart! Unlike most combat type games,
Budokan offers four different combat modes, each of which can be
tested on another mode. You can use Karate against Kendo, Bojutsu
versus Nunchaku, or any combination of the four above combat modes.
Electronic Arts goes further yet to provide a Tournament of sorts.
It's called the Budokan (Contest of the Ways of War). Here you
combat 12 different opponents, each of which is trained in either
one of the four arts you've previously trained in, or a new art
you've never been introduced to before! Unfortunately, Electronic
Arts wants you to be versatile, so you can't fight your way through
the whole tournament with your "favourite" Martial Art. You may
only use an Art a maximum of four times during the entire
tournament, forcing you to use at least three different Arts.

Page 8

Music in the Adlib Mode is well composed, although game sound
effects are all sent through the PC Speaker as scratchy grunts and
yells, and ticks and clicks for "contact" sound effects. Only
background music is sent through the Sound Blaster. Overall,
Budokan is a difficult game to master, and highly recommended for
combat type game enthusiasts as a hefty challenge.

WRAPPING IT UP...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Well, this is it for our 1991 publishing year. We hope that
this issue has been of use to you, and that you will enjoy the
holiday season for whichever holiday you celebrate.

We would also like to wish you the best for the New Year: you
probably won't be hearing much from us until then.

But most importantly, if you drink this holiday season, please
don't drive.

Many thanks go our to Jeff Woods, Gary Maddox, Mr. Goh from
Creative Labs, Bill Gallagher, Todd Clayton, and most of all Karen
O'Hearn, my lovely woman. Karen, you're the one I most wish to
spend my holidays with.

Happy Holidays from all of us here at the SBD, and may you and
your family enjoy the rest of the year.

Until 1991,
Sincerely,

Brad Barclay,
Todd Clayton, and
Karen O'Hearn,
The SBD Staff.

RATE CHANGES FOR THE NEW YEAR:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

You may have noticed that in this issue, many of the prices of
our services have either been raised or lowered. Some of our
services, we feel, were overpriced, such as our advertising rates.
Others, such as our subscription rates, have been losing us money
for nearly a year now. The rates listed in this issue are effective
as of December 1st 1991. Any payments postmarked after this date
will be returned to the sender for changing of payment (either
raising or lowering). We apologise for any inconvenience this may
cause. Thank-you.
