. . . : ; The "OH BOY, I'M LATE" Notice
Well, here I am, in a panic, trying to get the newest issues of Devil
Shat and Chico's Groove out on time. It'll probably end up that I'll
finish this issue about fifteen minutes before I send everything else.
. . . : ; The "AND WHY ARE YOU LATE, NUDGE, NUDGE?" Notice
Well, it's a long story, you see, but it has to do with the new backend
that I've been working on for Low Bandwidth, as well as a combination of
the new house, extended work hours, and my huge interest in Linux of
late. It all comes down, really, to the fact that I want to do too much
stuff at once.
. . . : ; ANNOUNCEMENTS and i'm fourth on the billboard...
NEW DEVIL SHAT (#FiftyTwo): Well, some people were relieved that we
didn't comment on them from last issue, and some people are pissed off
that I'm even friends with John Treacy. And so it goes. In the latest
issue, you'll find another of his offerings (and this one has nothing to
do with responses, so calm down), and a piece from yours truly called
"I'm a Teacher: Shooting People is Bad". Check it out, leave your
comments, and laugh at my queer title.
NEW GHOST SITES (#27): A new Ghost Sites was released, after a fair
amount of people noticed that there was no issue for May. Filled with
sadness, we see Adam Curry's famed site disappearing from the net, yet,
quickly, we're filled with a sense of pride, as one of the sites we
label as "dead" quickly labels itself "not dead" to the throng of
interested grave diggers. Find out what the hell I'm talking about.
NEW MAIN PAGE: The main page of Disobey was completely redesigned this
past week (so if you haven't seen the difference, dammit, come on by),
and because of such, it's a faster load, looks a helluva lot better, and
only takes up about a page and a half as opposed to the four pages it
used to eat before. I have some more little things which I wish to do,
but that's the future for you. Why the redesign? Too many colors, the
logo was too damn big, not enough people scrolled down (heard that 75%
of people don't scroll down past page two), and I was just sick of the
damn thing. Like I said, check it out, and let me know how it looks.
LOTS OF LOW BANDWIDTH CHANGES: As well as Low Bandwidth having all the
archives taken care of, one new listing was added. Three were also
removed - not because they were dead, but because they were the "Make
Money With Your Business on the Internet!" type of crap that no one
wants to read. Out of about 200 submissions to Low Bandwidth within the
past couple of months, only about 20 are worth keeping. Everything else
is this crap. Pisses me off and you'll see an official notice coming
from me sometime in the future concerning this. Low Bandwidth also had
some backend changes done, which involved some heavy URL modifications.
I've got all the redirects in place, but I'm sure something is going to
break along the way. If you notice something doesn't seem to be working
right, gimme an email and I'll fix it...
MINOR UPDATES: The NetSlaves manual was cleaned up a bit more in the
realm of formatting. Sorry, that's about it. (I'm getting really tired
typing now, so I want to go to bed. Excuse the brevity.)
. . . : ; EVERYTHING else and so get off me...
LINUX LEARNING: I went spastic for the first time in a while, and
decided to learn everything I could about my RedHat 5.2 system. Being
Linux, I could never know everything, but I now know the purpose of 90%
of the files on the system. I started in one directory, and tracked down
what every file was/did. Then I moved to the next. Great fun, but very
enlightening. I'm now on a tangent of reading/printing HOWTO's - el
bindero is getting very big.
THE LAUNDRY - YOU SHOULD TRY IT: Was doing laundry earlier this week,
and was sitting bored in the parlor with a PERL IN 21 DAYS book and a
pen and paper. Lemme tell ya something: Perhaps it is the thrum of the
machines, or the smell of the detergent, or maybe that fat smelly person
that just threw the shirt off her back into the washer, but I sure got a
lot of forward thinking done. Problems that had been bugging me for
weeks were suddenly solved, and side projects I hadn't given much
thought to evolved into do-able ventures. I plan on doing laundry more
often. Hell, maybe I'll even try to empty the quarter machine so the fat
lady will ask me out on a date.
SLAVE LABOR: If anyone has ever read JOHNNY THE HOMICIDAL MANIAC, than
you should know what Slave Labor Graphics is. And who Jhonen Vasquez is.
Besides being a treasured comic book of mine, he also released a follow
up series called SQUEE, which also shares the same revered place. The
only problem is that there is a new artist called Dirge, who releases a
Slave Labor book called LENORE. It looks exactly the same as JOHNNY and
SQUEE - not cool. Plus the fact that they're releasing a comic called
GLOOM COOKIE in July, which seems like it is intended to attract the
remaining Goth "Ooh, weep with me, Ariel" crowd. Dammit.
MOVIES WATCHED THIS WEEK: Some of my time has been wasted by watching
movies as well, although I still haven't equaled up to my normal viewing
habit. Watched this week include the remastered ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN
(another great transfer from Anchor Bay), SPIDER BABY (where has this
movie been all my life?) and the remake of PSYCHO (hey! look! if you
play the two side by side, the soundtracks sync up!).
LUCRATIVE PARTNERSHIP: My boss at the ISP where I work and I have
entered into a partnership centering around one of my ideas. We're
intending to make bunches of bucks. Or so we think. Meanwhile, I get to
have a server all to myself for free which I pursue an idea of mine.
Can't beat that. Stay tuned for more details.
. . . : ; BLAHBLAHS OF THE WEEK: ( june 4th - june 17th )
[Game-of-the-Week]-= Chutes and Ladders
---After having called this game "Candyland" too many times (I
---still do), I've been playing this an awful lot lately with my
---girlfriend. Toys R Us had some neat sale going on that you
---bought one board game, and got another one for free. You can't
---beat Chutes and Ladders. For even more fun, play Ladders and
---Chutes!
[Two-for-One-of-the-Week] Shaws SuperMarket
---I don't know how I could ever shop anywhere else. Shaws has
---been having great deals as of late - buy two, get the second
---free. And it's not on crappy items like Scholls Odor Eaters, but
---on really important stuff, like bacon, ice cream, sandwich bars,
---bags of chips, and more. They must know it's summer.
[Headache-of-the-Week] Dealing with .htaccess
---One of the things you can do with your website, if you have the
---right privileges, is mess with an .htaccess file, which gives
---commands to the webserver to do certain things it normally isn't
---told to do. I used an .htaccess file to prevent link rot in the
---new backend for Low Bandwidth. The fun problem is that (as Neil
---can so readily tell you), if you think everything is working
---right, you had better go check again, cos it ain't. I'm sick
---of 'em, and I think I've got it, but I have the nagging feeling
---that everything still isn't right. Argh.
