Regarding Slowdive/ambient related bands to check out, I'd like to follow up
an earlier comment
about The Ecstasy of St. Theresa. They have an EP of BBC sessions entitled
"Fluidtrance Centauri" from 1993 on which they combine the sound of "A Man
Called Sun" era Verve with the lush beauty of Slowdive. The aforementioned
"Free-D(original soundtrack)" LP from 1994 delves much deeper into
electronic/ambient/soundscape territory and makes for wonderful background
listening. "AstralVista" EP, also from 1994, is an attempt to remix tracks
from "Free-D" into a more ambient/techno vein with varying degrees of success.
However, noteable artists contributing remixes are Disco Inferno; worth a
look themselves on the LP "D.I. Go Pop".
Aside from this info, I know next to nothing about this band... While in
Prague last April I spied a
recent tour poster for an Ecstasy of St. Theresa/Laika gig (Laika owe them
plenty), so there's hope that they're still active as a band. Anybody in
Europe know where they're hiding?

I'd also like to add another band to the growing list of non-ambient
reccommendations
floating about: Swoon 23 (based out of Portland, OR) have an outstanding 2nd
LP entitled
"The Legendary Ether Pony" (on Tim/Kerr Records) which seamlessly blends
sounds
ranging from Mojave 3 to early Opal/Mazzy Star (minus guitar solos) with great
effect.
They even contribute a lovely cover of Jessamine's "Cellophane" to boot...
(which is to
say you should check out Jessamine as well if you haven't already). This is
not to say they emulate Slowdive to any notable degree, but if you suspect you
would enjoy a dynamic &
dreamy guitar record merging the ethereal with the abrasive, this is
definitely worth your time...

I only have the two EPs, but I agree with you about Fluidtrance Centauri
one. It's mindblowingly good. I saw their video on a 120 Minutes special
from Prague (I believe?) back then and immediately went out and bought
the EP (well, I had a freind do it in Stockholm for me, because I couldn't
find it around these parts). The AstralaVista EP on the other hand was a
major disappointment IMO. The mixes are far away from the lush and dreamy
beautiful sound of their first EP. I never found the album though - and
after a while I gave up and haven't looked for it since.

But their management (from what I understand of the language) have
entries all the way to 1997 (mentioning Go!Discs in 97 as well - well,
Free Records is a sublabel to Go...):

One website (updated in 1997) says:
Currently, no Czech acts have made it beyond the border, though
Ecstasy of St. Theresa raised hopes when they secured a Peel Session
and London indie chart placings in 1993.
It's hard to see how the scene will develop, given that most Czechs
would rather have a ticket to REM than any of the homegrown offerings.
The major record companies have set up offices here, but they're more
interested in exploiting their western back catalogue than in signing local
talent.

Hmm, I have the sndtrk but no Mojave 3. There were a lot
of good songs in the movie not on the sndtrk but I don't
recall a Mojave 3 song. I don't recognise a song titled
"Tryin' To Reach You" - where is it from?

My name is Viet and I wanted to make it to the show but couldn't. I
live in San Francisco and it's nice to hear that there are cool bands so
close to home.
Who did you play with at the Cocodrie? I'd like to do shows with bands
that are similar, I think it adds up to a better show overall, for our
'style' of music anyway.
I'll watch out for the 7". Write back and let me know what's up with
Solarium, ok?

I live in the Bay Area...in fact my old band played at the Cocodrie a
couple of times.
Anyway...I really wanted to go, but I couldn't. I hope Solarium plays
again sometime soon. I really want to check them out!!!

Hey guys....Kevin from Solarium here....
we had a pretty good turnout last night at our first gig....
The sound guy really didnt know what he was doing...but whatever...we didnt
screw up too bad so it was pretty decent....
We dont have any more gigs lined up yet but we really want to get
some....especailly after last night...it was a lot of fun! I havent played
a gig in years(I used to be in a band in Austin called "The
Cunninghams"...with Ken Gibson from the Furry Things) and we are all
looking forward to playing a lot more....
