Elite Macintosh Community Volume #2 12/9/95

introduction

Welcome to EMC, issue #02!

After a somewhat quick and dirty release of volume #1, number 2 comes out with a little more of a plan and goal ahead.

This version has a beefed up format, as I've gone through and improved on cosmetics and section titles. This file is best viewed in BBEdit 3.x.

We're looking for people interested in participating in articles, ratings, reviews, and the like -- e-mail us at: emc@ntbbs.mmbbs.com

1. Warez - Week in Review

*in no particular order*

First Class Server 2.7
The latest versions of the first class server (2.7) and First Class server client (2.7.2) came out this week, as well as a krack.

Kai's PT 3.0 Manual
Not a hot item, but very useful for your DTP work!

SpeedDoubler 1.03b2
The latest version of SpeedDoubler brought to you by Connectix, at the risk of trying out betas of SpeedDoubler from past (bad) experiences I did not test this on my 6100. However, here are improvements on this version:

  • Improved Speed Emulator performance for high speed serial transfer.
  • Speed Emulator compatibility with Microsoft Excel 4.0 is improved.
  • Speed Emulator compatibility with future system software updates is implemented.
  • Speed Access 1.0.3 fixes a BTree catalog problem that occurs during a rare combination of certain file system calls.

Hacker's Helper (December)
Formerly known as C&N, now back after a 2 month controversial distribution of the file & author's name over the net! Look for it under this name from now on.

Marathon Cheater 4.0
For those of you who aren't talented enough to beat Marathon on your own, download the recent release of the cheater for Marathon II. Performs the same functions as previous versions, but work for the release of Marathon II.

Adobe Illustrator 6.0 BETA
Tops out at about 9mb's, make sure to use any Illustrator 5.5 SN# to get this to work. Not being a huge DTP person, Illustrator 6 appears to be quite stable for a beta, and for those of you who are serious about DTP get this and test out 6.0. Is PPC native, but am not sure if it's FAT binary as it didn't give any options between a 68k or PPC version upon installation.

KPT 3.0.2
A more stable version of KPT 3.0.2.

Speed Doubler 1.1 Update
The LATEST updater for the great ware Speed Doubler! Fixes include:

  • Speed Access 1.1 fixes a problem where a specific disk directory error (a type of BTree catalog error) could occur during an unlikely combination of certain file system calls.

I wasn't experiencing this problem, but hell, why not update to an even better version of Speed Doubler?! I guess Connectix decided to can the 1.0.3 version, and boost it up to 1.1. Strange.

Timbuktu Pro 2.0
FINALLY, the release of THE ware for networking macs, whether it be locally, remotely (by modem), over the net, or whatever. 2mb+ archive

Here's what's new:

  • Built in ARA client
  • Power PC Native!
  • FlashNotes instant messaging
  • Drag-and-drop support for System 7.5
  • Address books
  • Beefed up user interface
  • MacIPX support

Features:

  • Access your network anytime, from anywhere
  • Control or observe a remote Macintosh
  • Connect to the network as a remote node
  • Work over LAN, WAN, the net, or dial-up lines

I've had no time to test out the internet or dial-up features, as I just picked this up on EMC's release date.

Norton Utilities 3.2.1 Update
Apparently there were problems with Norton Utilities 3.2 and HDT 1.x, so the 3.2.1 update fixes this flaws. I hadn't noticed any conflicts between the two, but nonetheless, it's a new version of Norton so it must be better. A measly 100k+ update!

2. Games - News & Reviews

Ratings 1 [worst] - 10 [best]

*in no particular order*

Virtual GameBoy Mac v0.3
Both a 68k and PPC version included in this archive, and a 2mb+ archive contains several games for this GameBoy emulator. Despite working somewhat slow (although, I was downloading in the background & running several other apps), it is EXACTLY like the GameBoy, just not as portable. But hey, if you've got yourself a PowerBook, these could become quite addicting. Not many games have been ported to run on the Mac yet, so I didn't see man games that I liked.

What I really didn't like was that the keys weren't configurable, and I found no way to quit out of the game unless my character was dead (however, force quitting worked). I was also suprised that there wasn't any sound, but not that it's important--they are ONLY GameBoy games...

All in all, it's a great emulator, and once more games are ported it'll be a very solid program, great for wasting time & for the kids. One of the great things is that you can increase the window size from the normal microscopic game boy display. However, if you do not have a fast Mac (I'm running a PPC) the larger display will become choppy.

Nothing much to really drool over here, but good to have to kill a little time at the office or at school.

Overall rating: 4

4. software

With so much software out there now, and so little time to check out everything, this section is for dynamite programs that everyone should take a look at.

Edit II 2.1.5
Tired of SimpleText's lame 32k barrier for text files? Want a little more of a 'real' wordprocessor than SimpleText? Don't want it taking up 10+ mb's on your hard drive? Your solution: Edit II 2.1.5 is the answer.

Edit II gets rid of the lame 32k barrier, launches quickly, opens SimpleText documents, takes a whopping 198k of hard drive space, 384k of RAM, search capabilities, and several other features usually found in the bloated commercial Word Processors.

A VERY slick ware to have hanging around on your drive for the small files that are too big for SimpleText and not important enough wait for when opened by ClarisWorks, WP, or Word (muhahahahah). Available on any AMUG BBS in a Box CD normally found on any Macintosh BBS.

Bert! 1.0
Bert! 1.0 is the most stable Homer IRC client I've come across yet. It takes far less ram than Homer x^3, and is much more stable. Some of the graphics are different, other than that, we can just consider this a (surprisingly) stable release of Homer.

Marathon II [K] - Does it allow network games?
There has been some questioning over the krack for Marathon II about the networking capabilities: The kracks DOES allow network games to be played without any SN# conflicts. Just FYI.

Subj: Going through hell with Finder accelerators (1/5)
From: Father Inire
To : All
Date: Sun, Oct 1, 1995 10:48:07 PM

After weeks/months of frustration using various Finder copy replacements, here's how things iron out:

CopyDoubler...will crash if it is copying in the background when Stuffit engages virtual memory in RamDoubler for any reason, may freeze in other memory low situations. CopyDoubler pict on copy dialog takes an annoying delay to load, negating any speed advantage on small copies

SpeedDoubler...hates Macintercomm Lite 1.1.1. Don't have a PPC, so can't use the cool features.

SpeedBoost (Part of Alladin's Desktop Utilities, formerly "SpeedyFinder")

Pretty slick; has a slider bar on the control panel allowing you to quickly set copy memory allocation up to one third that available (or 8 megs on my 24 meg machine at any rate). WARNING: YOU MUST UPDATE DiskDup+ to 2.7 or you will freeze when mounting images by Command-Click.

Allows multiple copying and can remove to-copy selections from the list on the screen dialog.

I am using Macintercomm Lite 1.1.1, SpeedBoost and Diskdup+ 2.7 right now with no problems...yet.

CopyDoubler - Worth it?
Most computer users choose CopyDoubler over other Finder copying utilities because of its ability to do scheduled copying. It _was_ a great feature, but now with the easy and stability of Retrospect 3.0, there's no need to use CopyDoubler over the other Finder copying utilities.

CopyDoubler is buggy, period. I had several crashes/freezes with it on my 6100, and prefer to use either Aladdin's Desktop Utilities Copier, or just the flat out Finder copy. SpeedCopy (part of SpeedDoubler) was cool with its ability to do simultaneous copies, but liked to crash/freeze a lot as well.

Any of you interested in advertising your BBS or url, send e-mail to emc@ntbbs.mmbbs.com as well, and what you specify will be included in the next issue in the Ads section.

It seems that this issue didn't get out on time because of the following:

I ended up with the flu for a couple of days.

On Saturday night, my car was stuck in a snowbank, which then pushed me back a couple of hours until I was able to get back to the 'pute to make the finishing touches...but finally, as I pull in a few more releases for this week and give 'em a quick review, issue #2 is here.

Hope you all enjoy it,

Freakman
