BASEBALL READING - SPRING 1990

The following, believe it or not, are NOT all the baseball books being
published this Spring of 1990. The best you could say is that these
are MANY of them, and the commentary, by the way, is provided by the
publisher so don't be surprised at how favorable the opinions are. The
text is included because it contains interesting facts (about baseball
as well as about the books) and good reading. With that in mind, I
guess all I can say is----play ball!

THE DIAMOND APPRAISED
by Craig R. Wright & Tom House; Foreword by Bill James
Fireside ISBN 0-671-70719-1 $9.95 418 pages July

Lively, provocative, and engrossing, THE DIAMOND APPRAISED is the
ultimate baseball debate--alternating essays by a statistical whiz kid
and a grizzled veteran on questions fans have been arguing for years,
including: How much of an effect do different ballparks have on
player performance? Are the careers of Pete Rose and Ty Cobb
comparable? Could the game be improved by modifying the rules? And
many more.

THE GAME ACCORDING TO SYD
The Theories and Teachings of Baseball's Leading Innovator
by Syd Thrift & Barry Shapiro
Simon & Schuster ISBN 0-671-68410-8 $18.95 288 pages March

Using smart scouting, innovative teaching approaches, shrewd trades,
and the lessons learned while director of the Kansas City Royals'
Baseball Academy--the only true research & development facility in
baseball history--Thrift built the Pittsburgh Pirates from rock bottom
to a pennant contender in just three short years. No other general
manager has been so intricately linked with his team's success; no
other GM generated such an outpouring of outrage at his dismissal.

In THE GAME ACCORDING TO SYD, Thrift shares the story behind the four-
seam fastball, tells what goes into making trades, outlines plans for
an international baseball academy, and discusses the importance of
vision--both literally and figuratively--in baseball. Currently the
vice president for baseball operations under George Steinbrenner, Syd
is still teaching, watching, testing the waters for trades, looking to
take the once-proud Yankees back to the top of the American League
East.

TAKE TIME FOR PARADISE: Americans and Their Games
by A. Bartlett Giamatti
Simon & Schuster Summit Books February release
ISBN 0-671-69130-9 $16.95 124 pages

With an enormous enthusiasm for sport in general and a passion for
baseball in particular, A. Bartlett Giamatti, scholar and baseball
commissioner, shows us how America's aspirations and values are
embedded in the rituals, play, and rules of her games. Sports at their
finest represent a form of self knowledge, an assertion of community,
and a representation of our society and its goals. "All play aspires
to the condition of paradise," he writes, "paradise is an ancient
dream, it is a dream of ourselves as better than we are". Charming,
eloquent, and thoughtful, Giamatti helps us understand why we remain
fascinated by the same college football rivalry, year after year,
returning to savor its rituals and customs; he explains as well why it
is so satisfying to gather at arena, park, or field and exult in the
athletes' efforts, demanding that rules be established and adhered to,
demanding that the clarity and purity of the sport be preserved. But
for Giamatti, it is the game of baseball that approaches paradise, as
he examines the splendor of the game: its energies bound within the
elegant geometry of its field, its players striving to return home.
For Giamatti reminds us that it is as a metaphor for America that
baseball is best understood--reflecting its freedom, structure and
beauty, and echoing the statement that to know America one must first
know baseball.

THE UNFORGETTABLE SEASON
by G.H. Fleming
Fireside ISBN 0-671-67660-1 $9.95 384 pages June

The story of the greatest pennant race of all time--told entirely
through the wildly inventive sportswriting of 1908.

The 1908 National League pennant race was without doubt the most
exciting ever. Three teams--the Giants, Pirates, and Cubs--finished
the season with just one game separating them, after a baserunning
blunder ("Merkle's boner") had robbed the Giants of an undisputed
first-place finish. Weaving together the florid and hilariously
embellished newspaper accounts of the time, G.H. Fleming brilliantly
recaptures the excitement of THE UNFORGETTABLE SEASON.

CULT BASEBALL PLAYERS
The Greats, the Flakes, the Weird and the Wonderful
by Danny Peary
Simon & Schuster Fireside Books February release
ISBN 0-671-67172-3 $9.95 352 pages

In this unprecedented anthology, Danny Peary has put together a
terrific lineup of writers who go to bat for their favorite baseball
heroes: Elmore Leonard on George Kell, Larry King on Billy Cox, Tim
McCarver on Bob Uecker, Stephen Jay Gould on Dusty Rhodes, John Sayles
on Dick Stuart, Tom Boswell on Roy Sievers, Jean Shepherd on Zeke
Bonura, Tony Kubek on Mickey Mantle, and Pete Hamill on Eddie Stanky
and many more. CULT BASEBALL PLAYERS includes greats such as Willie
Mays and Joe DiMaggio, as well as those with unfulfilled promise like
Pete Reiser, Steve Dalkowski, and Dick Allen. It celebrates players
like Dusty Rhodes, whose few great moments captured our imagination,
as well as Bob Uecker, who never had such moments, but captured our
imagination anyway. CULT BASEBALL PLAYERS is a must for every fan who
fondly remembers the remarkable individuals--from Hall-of-Famers to
out-and-out oddballs--who have made baseball our national pastime.

PATTON'S 1990 FANTASY BASEBALL PRICE GUIDE
by Alex Patton
Simon & Schuster Fireside Books March release
ISBN 0-671-69605-X $8.95 224 pages

Rotisserie leagues have swept the nation. At least half a million
baseball fanatics gather at the start of each season to buy real-life
baseball stars in the hopes of building a pennant winner. In the
months leading up to their auctions, fantasy leaguers grab any scrap
of information that comes their way in the hope of getting that edge
over their friendly enemies.

In his first year of publication, Alex Patton established himself as
the connoisseur's choice, the Rotisserie Leaguer's Bill James. With
rare wit and style, Patton twists, pushes, and shapes the basic
baseball statistics to correspond to the scoring structure used by 90
percent of all such leagues. Patton explains the crucial mistakes
owner make and how to avoid them, and previews the hot minor leaguers,
expressing their value in major league dollars--and he does it all in
a light, breezy style that never loses sight of the fact that this is
supposed to be fun. The publication of Patton's price guide is an
annual event, eagerly anticipated by a rabid--and rapidly growing--
market of true believers.

STENGEL: His Life and Times
by Robert W. Creamer
Simon & Schuster Fireside Books April release
ISBN 0-671-70131-2 $9.95 352 pages

Who was the real Casey Stengel, anyway? The Old Perfessor, double-
talking reporters and Senate committees into fits of helpless
laughter? The shrewd tactician who guided the New York Yankees to ten
pennants in twelve seasons? The harsh, remote figure who belittled his
players and often seemed unable to remember their names? In STENGEL,
Creamer reveals the person hidden behind all the clowning, the
mugging, the twisted syntax called "Stengelese".

THE WHOLE BASEBALL CATALOGUE
edited by John Thorn & Bob Carroll
Simon & Schuster Fireside Books April release
ISBN 0-671-68347-0 $17.95 416 pages Trade Paper

Where can you find the best baseball movies on video? Suppose you want
a pitching machine and batting cage for your backyard--where do you
look? Who runs tours of spring training, or major league parks, of
significant sites in baseball history? What if you want to get a job
in baseball--do any schools offer courses that can help? Where can you
tune in a baseball game when you're driving through Arkansas, or
Alabama, or Alaska? And what if you haven't given up the dream: Is
there anywhere you can go to show a major league team that you're the
shortstop of their dreams?

There is only one place to turn for the answers to all these
questions: THE WHOLE BASEBALL CATALOGUE. A team of specialists from
every corner of the baseball world has contributed the most up-to-date
information available anywhere on these subjects and many, many more.
The CATALOGUE will charm, amaze, and inform an enormous audience that
will be left with one last question: "How did we ever get along
without it?"
(More than 200 black & white photographs)

NOW PITCHING, BOB FELLER: A Baseball Memoir
by Bob Feller with Bill Gilbert
Birch Lane Press ISBN 1-55972-005-0 $18.95 March release

In 1936, a 17-year-old farm boy from Iowa broke into the Major
Leagues. The game of baseball would never be the same.

In his career Bob Feller won 266 games, struck out 2,581 batters,
pitched 3 no-hitters and 12 one-hitters -- against all-time greats
like Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Leo Durocher and Hank Greenberg. Many
consider him to be the fastest pitcher ever to play the game.

In NOW PITCHING, BOB FELLER, the Hall of Famer reminisces about the
baseball of yesterday, a time when train travel and barnstorming were
the norm, and compares it to the baseball of today, saturated with
show business. This book will be read and enjoyed by the many
thousands of fans who remember Feller on the pitcher's mound, and also
by more recent generations who will learn to appreciate this baseball
legend.
