Subject: A few problems with utilities

Could someone answer a few questions on editing, and point me in the
direction of an editing FAQ.

1. I have used dmaud to change some sunds in doom.wad, playing them back
with dmaud shows that they have been changed, but the sounds remain
unaltered in the game.

2. Deu 5.2 fails to handle the colourmap when showing sprites and
textures, the first time a texture is shown, the rest of the screen
blanks and a window opens in brown (yuk) with the colours almost
correct. From then on further requests to show textures show a grey
window on the map as normal, but with the colors all swapped within it.
I have tried all of the video modes with little success, and am using
an svga card.

3. Is it possible to change the various features of the monsters ie. hits
weapon type, etc. or is it only the noises and sprites that may be
modified.

Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to add my own music, like a
song of some sort (Glass Tiger music for example). If you can answer me

I planning on doing just a gigantic Wad with the best music ever.

In order to keep it that way, if you have a question but don't know whether
it's advanced or not, mail it in the first instance to:

Steve Benner : S.Benner@lancaster.ac.uk

Your question will either be answered or, if deemed suitable, forwarded to

What is this Index? Is it a Germany-wide list of books/movies/
games etc that are banned (for sale?, for ownership?)?

The only way I know of is to first get your music into a MIDI
format (you are on your own on that). Then you can use a program
called MIDI2MUS to convert the MIDI format to a MUS format, which is the
format DOOM uses. Then you can use either DMMUSIC or MUS2PWAD to put
the MUS file into a PWAD. These programs can at least be found at the
ftp.orst.edu DOOM site (or it's mirrors).

It's possible that you used dmaud to change the PC Speaker sound and not
the sound card sound.

I've encountered this problem from time to time as well while in 16 color
mode. But 256 color mode always works for me. I haven't heard any problems
with people being forced to use 16 colors though (unless you only have a
VGA card. :)

You can use a nifty program called dehacked to patch/restore the doom.exe
file where this information is kept.

Sector A is a room with four windows off it. Sector A has floor 0
and ceil 300 and the windows off it are floor 150 and ceil 256 with
rooms behind the windows. I've set the upper and lower textures of
the windows facing sector A to match the texture of the normal textures.

When I select all the linedefs which make up sector A and hit
F8, Align Y it complains about;

"Linedef #xx is not contiguous with previous LineDef, please reselect"

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???? ARGH!!!!!

Thanx... (Sorry, I'm frustrated...)

I just set up a 486/50 True Blue IBM as my Doom editing box when I found
a very peculiar bug..... Whenever I select anything (linedefs, sectors,
whatever) it turns my computer off if I'm using any DJGPP port of Deu.
The regular version runs fine....

Another wacky habit it has is if I choose a higher video mode
800x600x256, the screen'll be garbled line to line and in 320x200 video
mode... until I select something, then the screen will clear, then if I
choose a texture, it'll show up, but only in 16 colors!

It's not an urgent problem as I have other computers, but it's silly
using a pentium to edit doom wads....

Howdy Christian,

The error message you are receiving can be a little misleading.

Basically, I've run into four situations that can cause it:

1) Linedefs weren't selected in 'connecting' order. What I mean is
that you should start by selecting one SideDef and then continue
selecting SideDefs in a clockwise fashion, around the room, until
you get back to the 'tail' of the first SideDef. (I'm sure you
did this.)

2) One or more of your LineDefs has been 'flipped'. Make sure all
of the texture-bearing SideDefs you wish to align are facing *into*
the room. (I'm pretty sure you did this, too.)

3) One or more of the SideDefs you wish to align do not carry 'Normal'
textures.

To correct this third problem, temporarily define 'Normal' textures for
each of your four 'windows' using the same texture you used for the
Upper & Lower textures, align the textures around the room, and then
remove the temporary 'Normal' textures.

4) Sometimes 'Y' alignment actually tries to perform an 'X' alignment!
I don't know why, but it occasionally does. I usually run into that
problem when I'm making stairs. That being the case, the absence of
a 'Normal' texture (see #3, above) may be affecting your 'Y' alignment.
Try defining a 'Normal' texture and then try aligning 'Y'.

Hope this helps somebody.

Brian Kidby

Hey, you sent this to the wrong person, I'm brian. However, I had

said 'x' alignment and sometimes aligned the 'x' texture, I'll try adding

Subject: The Green Marine

OK, so this is not strictly concerned with Doom editing, but I figured
you guys would be the ones who would know the answer. So don't flame me
to ashes, OK?

Am I the only person who is sick of being the #!@$%$# GREEN MARINE in
DeathMatch games? I am so sick of running around wearing the suit that
shines like a neon sign, while my opponent is almost invisible in his
grey suit. I have read somewhere (maybe the FAQ?) that in network
games, suit color is determined by network address, so I guess that
can't be changed, but what about in two-man modem and serial games?
In my opinion, all players should be the same color, in order to be
perfectly fair.

Anyway, now that I'm off my soapbox, here's my questions:
(1) What determines the colors in two-man games?
(2) Is there any way (a patch, maybe) to change the colors, or
to make both players the same color?
(3) Has id ever commented on why they did it this way?
(4) Has id ever mentioned the possibility of a revision to change this?

Feel free to respond via private mail if you don't want this thread on
the list.

The one that works right now is Game Connection from Sirus software
307-237-0065 voice. It runs on The Major BBS software. It runs on one 486 or
better PC with digiboards. 307-237-2112 BBS. Software runs around $200 for
Game Connection, then you have to buy The Major BBS to run it on. The
configuration of their terminal is a bit of a hassle especially for modem
naive users :-)

Another group is APCI. Don't have any numbers for them but they advertise
(post) on a.g.d. all the time. Apparently another add-on to The Majorr BBS.

Then there is Dwango in Texas, 713-467-9272 BBS. John Romero is apparently
helping them re-write their terminal software. They are not a BBS in the
sense that you just chat & play games. Last I heard they wanted $20,000 for a
franchise + equiptment then you give them half your profits.

Good Luck,

Subject: Re: The Green Marine

HiYa!

Regarding this old problem about being the green marine (which I always am
too), the following theories/solutions are what I've gathered...

I THINK that the last computer to finish loading the game, will put them in
the player 2 position, although it will not affect the colour.

I THINK that the ANSWERING player will be the Green guy. In all my playing
days I've been the answerer because my system (DX2-66 w. 8 Meg RAM) is the
faster of the 2, thus should answer. On the few occasions where I HAVE
called, for whatever reason, I've been the grey guy...

There is a file at the DOOM ftp sites (ftp.orst.edu or ftp.cdrom.com, etc)
there is a file - possibly a dehacked .deh file that both systems load- that
will change both players to the RED Marine. Somewhere between green and grey
as far as visibility goes (closer to green), but at least both players are in
the same boat. I don't have the file name with me right now, but the first 3
letters are "red" <G>, and I think it's in /pub/doom/NEWSTUFF . Might be
worth a try.

As well there's a DOOMCC2.ZIP file in the same directory. Not sure if this
works for only DOOM2 or both versions, but if it works like the old DOOMCC it
will enable you to change the look of your opponent whether he does the same on
his system or not. With DOOMCC you will be able to choose what colour you
wanna make the other guy, and some of the colours (ie pink, yellow) will make
the green marine look like he's cloaked in comparison. :)

Hope this helps,

- -Shriker
