Hope you didn't think that was what I was trying to do, I was just trying
to stimulate some conversation here. I think everybody here is smart
enuff to keep the list from degenerating into what you described.

Speaking of discussions, I personally was wonderingif anybody here had any
good stories about stuff that happened to them or things they saw happen
at a Charlatans show. If you do, send 'em. Also, if anybody knows the
next US appearances for them, could ya send that too?
Oh, and if Hiroko Takeda is still on this list, I'd like to hear how
big or small they Charls are in Japan, & what else people listen to over
there.

Which mailreader do you use? It should say in the message heading who

Regarding experiences with the Charlatans:
I saw the Charlatans in L.A. I was in the front and it was incredible.
Lots of interaction between the audience and the band. Afterward, I hung
out with them downstairs for a couple of hours. It was fun. Tim is a
very nice guy, Mark even nicer. Martin was cool, although very quiet.
He seemed either tired or bored or depressed. He asked me if I thought
the sound was bad (I didn't) so maybe he was bummed about that.
Beautiful women were flocking around Tim so it was difficult to have more
than a short conversation with him. Mark on the other hand was very
talkative and also rather modest about his guitar playing abilities.
Jon and Rob weren't around much, so I didn't get a good sense of their
personalities.
The guys from Menswear were milling about too, but since I don't care too
much about them, I wasn't excited. I did tell the one guitarist guy (the
really young looking one) that I thought he was great (which he was); all
he said was "Cheers, mate". Typical. :)
All in all it was a lot of fun to meet and talk with one of your favorite
bands.

To add to the Charlies' gigs stories:
Here's one that will make even the male cynics on this list want to pick
Tim up and give him a hug. This year's T in the Park festy had the usual
NME signing tent. Due to a certain K*lie M, mass pandimonium ensued,
causing all the bands' times to be cut short. Needless to say, many
Charlie fans were left disappointed b/c security severely limited the
number allowed in. So Tim goes into the hordes, grabs a few of the most
hurtin' looking girls, brings them in, chitchats and takes pics...while NME
photographers are having a field day. All this after playing a
near-perfect set, an hour in the blazing sun.

I'm always here. 'cause the charlatans is the best band for me always.
I don't think the charlatans are very big in Japan. but not so small. maybe
I have to buy so many magazines in next mouth 'cause they'll report their
gigs or their interviews.
most people like Oasis or Blur. the Stone Roses has many religious
suporters. and Supergrass, Radiohead, maybe the charlatans' popularity are
next to them. (supergrass are super-popular in Japan. thickets were sold-out
as soon as put on the market)

I offten saw John and Rob drinking at bar or ... but I never saw Martin.
I can't imagine Martin does drinking or dancing in club .....
Tim is sweet and nice when he's not tired. I've never seen he refuse
someone ask him to write autograph. Mark, always same I think.

this is my first post to the charlatans list and after
having read a few of the posts to the list i wanted
to go ahead an respond to the many things that have
been brought up lately.
first of all, i have been a big fan of british music
for almost 10 years now dating back to early cure and the smiths.
i got into the charlatans as did everyone else i am sure
back in the mad-chester days when happy mondays and stone roses
and the charlies took the music world by storm! ride, and blur
followed of course. but as for musical tastes outside of
british music, as odd as this might sound i have recently become
very involved in old traditional chinese and japanese music.
ceremonial types of music from chinese theatre and such.
as for american bands i have yet to hear any music that has had
any impact on me personally. the spinanes are by far my favorite
here in the states which came from portland, or.
as for charlatans gigs here is a story that truly made them my
favorite band by far. having had to wait 5 or 6 years to see the
charlatans this past october 4, 1995 in chicago it was literally
the best experience i have ever had. because i live in the worst
place imagineable, indiana, getting word of shows is like winning
the lottery. you dont. but at long last i got word of the show in
chicago and me and 2 friends went! i met tim off the bus and got some
wonderful pictures of him and talked for about 10 minutes before he
went inside. he was astounded that i had been a fan for so long and
had been waiting to see them for many years! he was incredibly thankful
of my praise. incredibly nice person. when showtime came of course
i was at the front gate, and when tim came out he walked straight to
me and shook my hand and smiled! what a feeling. the show itself
was everything i imagined. thus making the charlatans my personal
favorite over blur, ride, stone roses, and oasis. thanks tim and
cheers! :)
now i would like to comment on the new album which i think is the
bands best work. the growth of the charlatans musically has
really made an impact on me. i think the band deserves all the credit
in the world for being together this long and putting out some
really great song writing. tim's vocals are as well genious.
i hope this letter hasnt bored anyone.
tour dates are always a welcome sight and are appreciated!

i still have yet to see the charlatans. i just recently discovered them(i'm
sorry i am not a devoted fan of 5 years plus) but they rock! my friend
pushed them onto me and it worked. he said they are very cocky though. is
this true??? i think all british bands are! i heard blur is really really
stuck up, but there music is so GREAT they can be!! i have loved rem since
chronic town and now that they are "dying out" i have noticed my taste
going back to there old new age indie sound and any band that is like that!
YES i am really drunk right now and i don't know what the hell i am
writing, but here are some other bands i LOVE : lotion, blur, rem, oasis,
arson garden, madder rose, sebadoh, catipillars, sloan, possum dixon,
yarn,echobelly, and unrest! and i can't remember any more!
DOES ANYONE HAVE MY MUSIC TASTE?????

?Northern Uproar are excellent. I saw them in Glasgow supporting the
Charlies. The only complaint I have is that they didn't play long
enough.

Justin mentioned that he didn't get a chance to talk to Rob.
I spent some time talking to Rob and Tim in Toronto. Rob is a very nice
guy...very down-to-earth and, even after five years, he seems
genuinely surprised and happy that people like his music.
When we were talking, he made a point of asking me if I had tickets to
that night's show (it was sold out) because he didn't want any of his
fans to miss out! This wasn't rock star posing...he was genuinely
concerned that I'd be able to see the show.
Tim, of course, is great. I always get a laugh out of him. When I have
more time, I'll tell everyone a couple of hilarious Tim stories.

ok, this is not about changing the list, but I didn't know how to start a
brand new message since I am relatively new to the list. So please don't

Anyway, since I am pretty new to the list, I don't know if you guys have
heard the Help CD? I am sure that you all have, but just incase you
haven't, it is a compelation CD of English bands to help the children of
Bosnia. The CD has the Charlatans, Oasis, Suede, Blur, Stone Roses, the
Boo Radleys, Portishead, Orbital, and some other bands.
If this is a redundant topic, I am sorry. But I was just wondering what
you guys thought of the CD.

What the hell?!? I thought that the Oasis song (a re-recording of their
earlier b-side, "Fade Away") was pretty mediocre, but how does letting
Johnny Depp join in represent selling their fans out? IT WAS A
BLOODY CHARITY ALBUM! Get your head out of your ass...its not like
they wrote a jingle for a McDonald's commercial or something.
Besides, how would even that constitute selling out their fans? Christ,
the only obligation they have to "their fans" is to make good music.

The charlatans track is one of the best cover songs I've heard in
years. Its very funky and, best of all, gives us some good insight into
one of the band's more prominent influences. Honestly, you should
give it another listen.

Why is doing a song with Johnny Depp "selling out"? Because you don't
like him? Because he's a major film star? What's the difference between
a film star and a rock star, as far as selling out goes? Maybe a Johnny
Depp fan would say that HE is selling out by doing a song with Oasis!
All he did was play guitar for a band that he's a big fan of. I'm sure
he was delighted! Plus I think he's friends with the band. What's wrong
with doing a song with one of your friends eh?

I certainly didn't write anything about Northern Uproar either. But it
doesn't matter cos tonight I'm gonna see the Charlies at Rock City in
Nottingham. I'm at University at the moment, about twelve miles out of the
city. Because of this we get a free mini-bus to use whenever we like. I
tried to organise a trip to see the Charlatans but I could only get four
people really willing to go. So we're going by taxi now. Expensive! (But
worth it.)
On the subject of diversity, I'd just thought you might like to know what
I'm into. I used to be a complete indie freak but that was just as Suede
et al we're getting big. Unfortunately I had a bit of a closed mind to
everything else so thought that techno = 2 Unlimited(quite good tunes
though) and rave = bleep bleep bleep. Now, after maturing, I listen to a
much more diverse range of music. It's great to boogie to House music, or
get off your tits to some bangin' trance (especially in the hands of Carl
Cox or Sasha). Of course, this is best for clubbing the night away. The
best music as music goes is obviously the Charlies - they reign supreme
and have a song for every mood you care to feel! In fact - can anyone on
this list name a Charlies Choon they don't like - I honestly can't.
Oooh - can't wait til tonight. Steve Lamacq (Radio 1's Evening Session) is
DJing for the rest of the night til 2 in the morning.
P.s. can I just say how good some of the threads on this mailing list are -
it's such a great mix from all over the country. Well worth the visit!
Stop going on about Northern Uproar though or it will all start to get a
bit messy!

Hi All!
I'm happy to see that people are starting to send some interresting and
happy mails to this list. I don't like it when people slag each other
off, but maybe that's unavoidable.
I think the Help CD is brilliant. I don't care about who plays what on
that Oasis song, but the song itself is nice, I think. I also like very
much the new version of The Stone Roses' Love Spreads. It's cool they've
got a new one on keyboards. The Charlatans & The Chemical Brothers' song,
which is a cover of Sly And The Family Stone, are the best track on that
CD.
I also want to say something about diversity. I can listen to music that
people here propably would die of. I don't care, so just slag me off and
get it over with, if you like. I won't say anything in my defence. When I
listen to Michael Jackson's Thriller it really takes me back to my
childhood. Howard Jones, Wham & George Michael and Thompson Twins have
the same effect, and I like that. I also like Supertramp, and old Chicago
from the 70's. I think it gets boring if I don't listen to anything
except Britpop. I was firstly into the normal indie scene, anyway. Bands
like Pale Saints, Swallow (the UK one), 5:30, 25th Of May are exellent
indie bands from Uk. I also think Beastie Boys, Money Mark, School Of
Fish, Smashing Pumkins, Throwing Muses & Kristin Hersh, Loud Sugar and
Jellyfish are great bands. Ambient & Techno music is also great. The
Prodigy, Orbital, Global Communication, Spooky, Aphex Twin are some of my
favourites from that scene. And, has anyone mentioned The Chapterhouse?
They are absolutely brilliant, and I forgot to mention them on my Top 10
list.
Well, I hope you didn't get offended by what I listen to . And anyway,
the Charlatans just beat evrything. I can't get enough of their music.

Subject: supreme Charlatans
Hi all!
It's about time to start discussing the Charlatans, again, for this IS
SUPPOSED to be a Charlatans mailing list...

I agree here. I was just about to write that I don't find a song by this
group that doesn't do anything for me. Most of their songs (especially The
Only One I Know, Then, Who Wants To Know, Page One, Tremelo Song, Weirdo,
Easy Life, Jesus Hairdo, Stir It Up, Feeling Holy, and Toothache) move me
and make me want to dance and sing along...Others make me just kick back and
let my imagination go wild (Opportunity, Inside Looking Out, Up To Our Hips,
Feel Flows)
One of the reasons why I find the Charlatans being probably the best band in
the world, is that they work so well together as a team. It's amazing. They
have more than 60 songs released now, and very few of those don't include
all of the members for the credits. Every single member's contribution to
the final composition of a song is essential. That's what makes them a great
>>band<<, and not a singer with a bunch of instrumentalists playing for
him/her, or a great guitarist shining above the others, or a bunch of "rock
stars" product of the music industry, playing music for the sole purpose of
making money...
It's obvious that since all members of the Charlatans are involved in the
creative process, putting their heart and soul into each song, they all
enjoy playing THEIR OWN parts, and therefore the band delivers one of the
best live performances. Those of you who have seen them live know what I'm
talking about; those of you who haven't yet, well.. please do you yourself a
favor, and make an effort to be there the next time they're in your area
(even a trip to another town would be worth it) - you won't be let down.
The Charlies love what they do, are devoted to what they do, and in my
opinion, this is why we get to enjoy what they've put down on record, and
what they deliver during a live performance. I "just wanna say thank you!"....

I really enjoyed this list in the beginning, when discussions were focused
on Charlatans topics. (I am not a hypocrite - I know I was responsible for
the thread with the top 10 bands, which was somewhat off the topic, but I
thought that it was an interesting and helpful music taste check for members
of this list. For a zillionth time I apologize to those of you who were
annoyed by what it turned out to be...) I really don't like people flaming
each other, and it would be greatly appreciated if those of you who feel
like doing it, do it through personal e-mail communication.
Regarding the threads being "a great mix from all over the country", I
believe that this mailing list has members worldwide, and it would be great
if we could have a listing of where people are from (or maybe, as Ian Brown
says, "it's not where you're from, but where you're at"...) I tried to
gather such information from members of this list, but it was way too early
of its existence and there weren't enough people subscribed. Those of you
who feel that this is a good idea, please e-mail me PERSONALLY at
*klyakov@ucsd.edu*, and I'll compile a member's list. Just write down your
name, town, and country...

Hi everyone!
Music became my hobby when I was about 11, and ever since I've been buying
albums, going to concerts, and spending hours and hours just listening to
music. In the past five years, it's become not only a hobby, but a way of
life, since I've started playing instruments, writing original compositions,
and playing in bands...To me, listening to music is not just some background
sound that's augmenting my mood. Usually, when I listen to music - that's
exclusively what I'm doing.
Like Eirik, I too find myself listening to music remote from the
Britpop-baggy-Madchester-whatever-you-want-to-call-it style. My first
favorite band was Alphaville. Then I got into Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran
Duran, Ultravox, Talk Talk, Sisters of Mercy, The Mission, Camouflage, The
Sex Pistols, Love and Rockets (and Bauhaus), Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and
the Beatles, to name a few.
I like some new age electronic artists, like Jan Michel Jarre, Enya, Hisham,
and Enigma. Like Eirik, I too find some ambient/techno/dance music
appealing. I love Orbital and the Chemical Brothers, and I like the Orb,
Intermix, Program 2, the Prodigy, Leftfield, and Moodswing (featuring
Shrissie Hynde and Johnny Marr).
Some Classical music moves me too - I love the Baroque period, in
particular. My favorite composers are Vivaldi, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, and
Mozart. Although I have only one CD with Jazz, I do set my radio sometimes
to the Contemporary Jazz station. I also like some oldies, my favorite
songwriters being Paul Anka and Little Richard.
I agree with Eirik about Chapterhouse, too. I like "Whirlpool". "Blood
Music" is one of my favorite albums - Brilliant!
I apologize if I've bored some of you....just wanted to share my somewhat
diverse taste in music....

What do you think about Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart? JS Bach is
absolutely entriguing (sp?) in that his religious faith was of such a
different nature than Beethoven or Mozart. I think he was much more
willing to submit to the form in music first, and then too embellish it
(as a praise to god), but I think that Beethoven and Mozart were more
interested in breaking boundaries (possibly as assertions of
individuality?). I've been thinking a lot about classical music lately.
Personally, I don't understand how anyone can listen to just one type of
music.

Hi everyone.
Went to see the Charlatans last night at Rock City, Nottingham, UK. I
wouldn't have known it was on if it wasn't for Eiriak's WWW home page.

We tried to organise a mini bus full of Charlatans fans but due to short
notice many people were already doing something else. In the end just me
and my friend Karen went. When we got to the door we asked who the support
were - we were told that it was Open Grave. Sounds a bit morbid so
considering we were in a hyper mood we went and had a drink in the pub
instead.
After the statutory buying of a new T-Shirt we were down in the crowd just
in time for the Charlies do their stuff. Everyone was jumping up and down
even before Jon Brookes showed his face because they played Leave Home by
the Chemical Brothers. As soon as the first note was played I lost Karen in
the swaying masses. I haven't experienced crowd swaying like that since
Suede at Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Well ace!
They played all the favourites but I was a bit disappointed that they
didn't play Bullet Comes. Or any new stuff we haven't heard. You can
usually have a good
dance to the new songs to cool down but nevermind. They encored with a
resplendant Sproston Green and then again with the Help album favourite
Time for Livin' which was ace. The mood was pretty 'rock' compared to when
I saw them in Leeds last Spring when they were very funky!
After their storming set Steve Lamacq of Radio 1's Evening Session DJ'd -
he was OK - could've played some more Madchester stuff instead of Greenday.
Got his autograph funnily enough though - he's really ugly! Not very
friendly either.
After that, the residents played absolutely loads of grunge which put us
indie pop kids on a bit of a low. So we went home. Great night though,
considering we got a free bus in and a lift home.
The support band were apparently naff - and they weren't Open Grave either
- they were called 'loom'. I would have liked to have seen them though -
never trust a bouncer!

Cos he's pissed - that's what pissed people do. Plus, in the Charlies'
fans ever increasing need to expand their love of music, we have learned
that the Rentals are crap. How crap? Crapper than Weezer. Bonus
information! Lighten up la':-) I wouldn't delete anyone from the list
myself but then thats cos I'm a Libran - well balanced.

Yeah sorry - that's what I meant to type but I was a bit fluffy in the
head at that time (if you know what I mean). It's really smart

Yep, I did , the Charlies were superb as usual, but I agree about Tim, he
looked a bit uneasy or something. WHY didnt they play 3 songs or have an

Well it was only because a guy in the group that I went with was somehow
on the guest list. Apparently he'd seen them many times before and

Well the tour finally came to an end with the re-arranged date at Hull
University. I can't say that it was the best venue I've ever been to
but there was a really great atmosphere at the front. It all worked
out very nicely for us because we got a lift from the hotel in the
band's minibus (there were a couple of free spaces because Tim had
gone to the venue early). We just had time for a few extra drinks
before the usual into of `Leave Home' and The Zombies' `This will be
our year ....'. I love the fact that they've had the same intro to
every gig because it reminds me so much of the `early' days when they
always played The Fifth Dimension and The Beatles.
Anyway it was a good gig and they finished with `Time For Living'.
They hadn't played that at Sheffield on the Friday (Yes I was there as
well) and so I would have been really disappointed if they hadn't done
it on the last date (especially when they had to make up for the
previous cancellation). The aftershow was the usual low key affair and
after that we got the minibus back to the hotel. They had to open up
the bar for us but once that was done we sat down and had a bit of a
chat with Martin Blunt. I can't remember much about that but we talked
about the next moves and the importance of keeping the momentum of
this year going. They obviously realise the importance of that but
Martin's main aim was to release a really great album.
After a while Tim sat near and so I asked a few questions that I've
wanted answered for a little while. The first was `Are you going to
play any joint gigs with The Chemical Brothers ?' The unfortunate
answer was no. I've had this idea in my head for a while of the
Charlatans playing quite a reasonable sized venue with the Chem. Bros.
supporting but with the Charlatans joining them for an intro. track
(probably `Nine Acre Dust') and then them doing a joint encore of
`Time for Living' hopefully after a version of `Life Is Sweet'. I'm
sure it would have been brilliant but Tim said that they almost played
together in Amsterdam this year but after that there were no plans.
The other thing I asked about was The Small Faces tribute album that
they were supposed to be recording a track for. From what I gathered
the album seems to have bitten the dust because all the money wasn't
going to go to Ronnie Laine's medical care. Someone else was going to
make some money and that isn't acceptable. I just hope that the
remaining Small Faces manage to sort out their legal battle soon and
manage to get lots of backdated royalties. Then the tribute album
would possibly see the light of day.
We left the bar at about 3 am. God knows how long the others stayed up
but it was a really pleasant end to one of the best Charlatans tours
that I can remember for a long time.
