Subject: finnish indie news round-up

Hi there!

I haven't had time nor energy to report on what's happening in the Finnish
indie scene, sorry to keep you waiting (...heh). Anyway, here are some
random bits of info; I am surely forgetting something ultra-important, but
I'll be back with more babble sooner or later. So without further ado:
-------------------------------------
Finnish Indie News & Gossip
compiled by Kimmo Saaskilahti (solaris@sci.fi)
September 27th,1996
-------------------------------
All Stars - this upcoming band from Nokia (near Tampere) are just finishing
their second demo tape. The band themselves seems to be very happy about how
it turned out; their first demo tape had a slightly unsuccessful sound (in
my opinion) but this time that side of things should cause no complaints -
the songs themselves have always been top class, ranging from melancholy and
peaceful guitarscapes to faster, poppier tunes; the voice of the female
vocalist Meri is the icing on the cake. Watch out this space for a review as
soon as the tape is out!

Candy Darling - I was told they have released their debut album some time
ago. However, I haven't heard it yet, therefore I cannot comment on it. They
supported Brainpool on their Helsinki gig a week ago and will be playing
here in Tampere October 2nd.

Coo - the psych-rock five-piece have (finally) released their debut EP
(called "Heavenly Blue") on the Tangerine label. Expectations were high but
the band managed meet them with effortless cool with this four track release
which is no doubt one of the best 'indie' releases ever in this country!
Names like The Verve, Spiritualized spring to mind as soon as the
effects-heavy guitars start building their wall of sound, and there's a dash
of Ian Curtis echoing in the singer's voice to boot.

Dada Girl - hmmm...I don't think they have done anything except a couple of
gigs here and there. A shame really, they should have had their debut album
released by now...

Greenhouse AC - the 'missing link between punk and grunge' released their
third full-lenght album "Doggy Bag" about a month ago simultaniously in
Finland (Stupido Twins) and Germany (Tug Records). If you think Him Kerosene
are great, you should check this CD out as well. I cannot say if it's good
or not because I run their web page (http://www.sci.fi/~solaris/greenhouse/)
and my name seems to be printed on the sleeve... :)

Kitchen Sink - where's that new EP which should have been out a long time
ago? Or is it already??!!

The Pansies - have managed to get a deal with Polygram Japan, who will
release there an album combining the best tracks from the first two Pansies
albums.

Super - have entered the national Finnish singles chart at the position 15
with their brand new three-track cd single "Tempted", released by the Odor
label! If you thought Cardigans were 'easy listening' you should hear the
title track which has the words 'lounge', 'mellow' and 'groovy' written all
over it! The second track, "Historical Sights" is more Saint Etiennesque
(some nice lyrics there as well...romantic in an autumn kind of way), while
the third song "Infinite Moment", the euphoric live favourite during the
past year or so, does not work _quite_ as well on disc but anyway finishes
nicely this single. Some of you might remember how I raved about their
debut single last December - well, the new one is more than twice as good!
Soon available from Mind The Gap in Germany, Cowly Owl in France, Shelflife,
Jigsaw (both USA) and probably a couple of other fab mail order services.
The band will be playing in Helsinki in November 7th (if memory serves) -
Yngvie Malmsten had cancelled... :) Also, they are about to start working on
songs for their debut album, planned to be released early 1997.

Supperheads - my spies report that this long-running band is has been signed
to Warner/WEA...remember where you read it first! :) A new album has already
been recorded and will very likely be released later this year.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

No one in Denmark has "come forward" and said he/she would like to do
a Danish Indie tape yet, but I have received messages from a girl in
Norway who wanted to do a Norwegian Indie tape. Sounds great doesn't it?
Well, I haven't heard from her since she first said she would do one,
and that was about 1 1/2 months ago. :-(

No kidding!? That's neat! I'll definitely go and see them then, even though
I'll see Bob Hund only a few days earlier too (one can never see them too
often, can one? :-))

I remember you (Kimmo) wrote a lot about Larry & The Lefthanded on the
list back in 1994, saying that you had been at the best live show (with
the band) ever probably, and that track on the Finnish Indie compilation
tape is extremely noisy, so I bet I'll enjoy their live performance. :-)

Forgot to wrote that this schedule was collected from the Net -
ie. the "Bob Hound" is what it says on the Net, and the Brainpool
date (9/10) should be 9/11 if one looks at the gig listings in
the swedish newspapers.

Anyway, that's what it says on their web pages, so don't blame
me if it's wrong. :-)

Subject: Concert Review: Bob Hund - Jonkoping 28/9 -96

What : Quick concert review
Bands : The Wellmeant + Rebell Robert + Bob Hund
Where : Eldslandet, Jonkoping September 28th, 1996
Audience: 100 - 150 (just a guess)
Length (Bob Hund): about 90 minutes.

- We arrived when The Wellmeant (who really should have been the 2nd
band that evening, but things changed the last minute - AAAAAGHHH!)
finished their last song. It was a long ending though, say about
5 minutes of monotone guitar walls (w/bass, drums and synth of course)
a la Stereolab with the girl (Marika - vocals, who looked like a wild
14 or 15-year old) jumping around on the stage like .. umm.. mad?, and
the rest of the band concentrating on their instruments.

Magnus (from Lousy) (who we went there with + a bunch of his friends
and Stefan, also from Lousy) agreed that it was really Stereolab-esque
when we later discussed it (funnily enough, Mattias from The Wellmeant
said just before Bob Hund went on stage that the song was actually
_called_ Stereolab (!))

- Next up was Rebell Robert (who should have been first) from Stockholm.
Enter a man in his mid-30's in a robe. A robe he didn't keep on
for many seconds - yes yes, he was completely naked.. Picked up his
guitar and started to play a song that had more to do with fucking
than anything else. Funny man... eh.. no. Therefor, we decided to
go to a nearby bar again to grab a beer, awaiting the arrival of Bob
Hund!

On our way out, the guards stopped us, saying that we had to wait.
For what, we asked? Umm, there's people coming in, so you have to
wait and keep the entrance free. 3 persons entered (that was the
crowd we had to keep the entrance free for..) and then we started to
go out. STOP! the guard said. You must wait! FOR WHAT?! Umm, you might
go off to the neigbors, the guard said. ??????? We didn't understand
a thing, so there was some hassle, a bit of quarrel etc etc, and
finally, we were let _out_ of the building!

- A beer later and a walk back to the venue again - it was time for
Bob Hund! Yaaay! And they did a great show (what else?) of course!
Most of the songs were from their latest album (one I don't have yet,
unfortunately (Magnus - do you know the titles? Hmm, what was that
one .. 'Reinkarnerad igen' or something?) like 'Ist{llet f|r musik:
f|rvirring' and 'Dusseldorf' (which they started with, Thomas ending
the song with "yes, maybe you can like it here in Jonkoping?") for
example but also a lot of "oldies" like 'Mer {n s} kan ingen bli'
(my favourite) 'L{nge L{nge', 'Det skulle vara l{tt f|r mig att...',
'Dur och moll om vartannat' and '100 }r'. They played three songs in
the extra number by the way.

The school chair and the traffic cone were there as well of course, but
with a new (?) item added. A death skull shaped .. umm, I don't know the
english word (!) maraccas? Thomas climbed down into the audience a couple
of times (three times actually). Once to take part "as a normal spectator",
and the other times to stand (and jump and sing) on the school chair.
The last time he moved around in the audience with the chair, only to be
picked up by the people next to him at last and carried back onto
the stage.

- Anyway, overall, I'd say it was a great gig, though there was way
too many drunk people "in the pit", especially one who climbed up
onto the stage three-four times just to "be" there... and two guys
next to me started a fight, with Thomas looking troubled at them
from the stage (one of the two guys was actually almost thrown
out from MacDonalds later that night..)

Next concert review: The Dictators (US) + Hellacopters (Herrg}r'n, thursday)
Next after that: Larry & The Lefthanded (SF) + Bob Hund (Skylten, friday)

Scandinavian Indie SCANDINAVIAN CD REVIEWS Scandinavian Indie

Gone - "Nothing" MCD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Gone - "Nothing" (MCD, Frisbee 1994, Time: 20.01)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Nothing (2.35)
2. Clodmaster (4.02)
3. Pus (2.37)
4. Brain (2.56)
5. Radiant (4.57)
6. Gonejah (2.52)

Scandinavian Indie Review: Let me get straight to the point. This is
_hardcore_ with melodious, rap, choir, whatever vocals. At times they sound
like _Biohazard_ with heavy smattering guitars and rap, then suddenly it
fades away and enter the _Faith No More_-ish sound, then suddenly that
fades away as well, and we are treated to an interlude with a lonely guitar
and _Bjorn Flodkvist_ (vocals) talking, and then we are right back
where we started, roaring guitars smash away the dark and empty basement
there only seconds ago.

"Nothing" starts off with blasting guitars and rapid fire drums which turns
into a strange section with a single, light electric guitar and choir vocals
in a slow pace. Enter the rap part, and back are the scratching, smattering
and dirty guitars. That is how it goes with the only exception that at the
end it turns into a general heavy metal electric guitar'n drums mayhem.

"Clodmaster" is of the same sort. Harder guitar-filled parts mixed together
with slower, easy breeze parts with a single high-hat, a simple guitar,
a lonely bass, Bjorn talking..

"Pus" is my favourite song. Scratching electric guitars leading the way.
Alarming hardcore guitars, smattering drums, screaming guitars following.
It definitely feels like some sort of warzone. "The only way to go, is
through the trapdoor"
explains Bjorn, and everything goes boom!. On and on
and on.. "aiii, aiii, aiii" the guitars scream. Very professional.

"Brain" and "Radiant" are both very similar to the first two songs.

"Gonejah" on the other hand is very different. This is more of a _Reggae_
song. Nothing strange about that considering the title though.. But while
I usually loathe Reggae, I like this very much. Perhaps it is because they
have mixed it with psychedelic electric guitars and hardcore sections, and
in the process, made it much more interesting than any ordinary Reggae song.

The most appealing songs are the ones that are closer to the _Biohazard_
sound, but then again, that is my personal view, and I have been one of
their fans once. I have more trouble with the more melodious parts; where
it is more hardrock than hardcore. But all that may have changed now, as
this record was made back in 1994. It would be interesting to hear what
they sound like today. Hopefully it is more hardcore and less hardrock.
